Cor grins at Zaeta. "Well, I've been a few skirmishes while in the Army, so if it's a fight we're in for, then that's what we'll do. But if we can find a way to sneak in the civilians rather than risk them in a fight, we'll take that option instead. Things should be more clear once we get there, so the plan might have to change depending on the situation we encounter."

When Frey speaks, he shakes his head in the negative. "Lady Estrella confirmed that the Imperial Captain is enforcing a no-fly zone - or at least nothing beyond grav cars. I won't risk any of Mangus' ships in violation of that order. It seems as though we're being granted a bit of leeway here, let's not push our luck."

Definitely take the weapons and anticipate a fight, but maybe we'll find a chance to sneak in. I'm thinking we'll have to see what the situation looks like when we get there. Even if we can't all sneak, perhaps we can engage the rebels opposite the armored ground cars from the ship and give the civilians an opening to get to safety first and then look to get our own butts out of there. As far as flying any ships around, I don't think it's a good idea. We'll have to rely on our weapons as well as any that might be mounted on the ground cars (or grav cars?) brought out from the Skander. Tarondor, can you confirm if the ship has any of those? And whether any of the ground or grav cars have mounted weapons? Hopefully between us and the security forces that will meet us, we can handle the rebels at the cordon site.

None of the ground cars are equipped with mounted weapons. They're really meant for unobtrusive and non-threatening travel on planets you visit for trade. But despite this they are armored and have rugged tires in case they're needed on a planet with no repair facilities.

The ship definitely has a small arms locker with personal weapons and body armor for repelling boarders.

You've already rolled very well on your Tactics roll, so you have a route planned out for minimal contact with the rebels. Let me know when you're ready to roll.

Zaeta makes sure the civilians are ready by assigning them cars and explaining the route in detail. She will bring up the rear of the caravan, making sure no one picks off any stragglers on the way.

... Or at least trying her best with the limited weapons that she was able to recover from the fallen at the party. She really wants to make it back to the ship so she can get her favorite high-powered rifle rather than one of these toy laser guns that the party crashers were using.

When everyone is rounded up and in the cars, she signals to Cor.

Ready when you are, Sir.

'Lance Sergeant/Scout' Corellon "Cor" Anders - 6C97A6 | Second Officer/Astrogation | Gram (Spinward Marches 1223) | Profile Link

Figuring that he's the one responsible, Cor takes the lead car - after loading up as many civilians as he can get into it. The carbine is propped up on the seat next to him as he drives, and his comm is open to the Skander's frequency so he can call in immediately when they are getting close to the starport. When they do, he will call for all available security currently on duty to man the armored cars, armed with the heaviest weapons available and with body armor. He goes over the instructions to engage the rebels at the cordon, but not to over-commit. The intention is to cause a distraction so that he and the others can get past as quickly as possible, and then the armored vehicles will act as a rear guard for their caravan as they race toward the Skander.

Let's do this!

The caravan of limousines and large dark government vehicles is conspicuous as it moves through the embattled city. Guided by Mnasippus's "accidental" orbital feed, you safely navigate past patrols and roadblocks... almost.

About half a mile from the landing facility and the safety of Skander, you come to a makeshift barrier of debris, rubble and vehicles that didn't show up on the overhead display. It's clear that your vehicles can't get through without some sort of confrontation. You can see a few figures atop the barricade, but you can't make out details.

What do you do?

Cor calls out on the comms for the other vehicles to stop as he assesses the situation...

So we're a half mile out from the cordon site, correct? Where the plan is to have our armored cars meet us at the entrance to the landing facility and cause a distraction to let us slip through either by force or stealth. Does it appear that if we leave the vehicles behind, we can slip past this barrier on foot by going wide around? Does it appear as though they've seen us?

Zaeta (pic) | 6|10|5|10|8|7 | Legal Officer | Homeworld: Torment (Entropic Worlds 0720) | (Additional link to Profile)

Zaeta stops the last caravan car at Cor's command, then gats out with her confiscated laser pistol drawn.

She wonders if this barrier was intentionally left out of the Mnasippus' information. Could it be friendly, designed to protect the ships?

She looks around carefully, checking to see if this is an attempted ambush, or perhaps something they might be able to avoid/talk their way out of.

Investigate+Intellect: 2d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (6, 2) + 2 + 1 = 11

Watching all this go down from the bridge of the Skandersvik:
"Something smells fishy in Denmark...our team reports the rebels are equipped with laser weapons. Hmmm. They must have lots of money or they have lots of help."

He makes a few adjustments to the comms panel to ensure a clean signal between the ship and the Independent Team.

He retrieves his hand computer and asks it a serious of interrogatory discussions (space googling) to ascertain the nature of the conflict between the rebel faction and the government on Ulabria.

Investigation INT: 2d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (5, 4) + 2 + 1 = 12

Rynar is simultaneously trying to analyze the feeds from the Imperial ship to monitor the tactical situation on the ground. He attempts to use the ship's comm suite and sensors to determine whether the Imperial ship is sending other datelinks to others on the planet or orbit and to whom it may be communicating with. He doesn't trust the Imperials.

Sensors EDU: 2d6 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (3, 4) + 2 + 2 = 11
Comms EDU: 2d6 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (6, 3) + 3 + 2 = 14

He'll also map out the emissions environment of the ship's line of sight to see if there is anything else that catches his interest:

Sensors EDU: 2d6 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (6, 2) + 2 + 2 = 12
Comms EDU: 2d6 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (2, 4) + 3 + 2 = 11

Of course, he'll consider the situation from his military tactics lense:

Tactics/Mil + INT: 2d6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (5, 4) + 1 + 1 = 11

Depending on what he discovers or rules out in these digital assesments, he may be interested in getting relieved and joining the ground sortie team.

Rynar, that's more than you're going to be able to get done in the time frame we're talking, but I'm going to assume that you get much of that done with the assistance of the crew.

Cor, it does not seem as though the people manning the roadblock have spotted you.

Zaeta, you think this roadblock (consisting of ground vehicles blocking the street under a bridge) probably wasn't visible to Mnasippus from its orbital position. More importantly, you spot a culvert under the road about fifty yards to the west. You can't get the vehicles through there but you could get people through. Of course, all those well-dressed dignitaries in tuxedoes and evening gowns are not going to like it.

Rynar, Mnasippus is simply broadcasting its feed to the planet. Anyone can pick up the orbital feed and see the situation. Strategically, the rebels have the upper hand. The cavalry is coming, but it will take hours for a sufficient force to form up and assault the rebel positions and by that time, it will be too late. The capital will already be in rebel control. For more on the political/military situation, you can read Zaeta's report (by going to THIS POST and reading Zaeta's spoiler.)

Zaeta (pic) | 6|10|5|10|8|7 | Legal Officer | Homeworld: Torment (Entropic Worlds 0720) | (Additional link to Profile)

Zaeta tells Cor about the culvert first, then gets the whole group out of the cars and together again explaining that they aren't going to be able to get past in the cars, but she sees a culvert that will get them through, but they are going to have to walk.

She explains specifically to the former hostages/party guests what they are going to have to do, and why, and that they need to move as quietly as possible in order to save their lives and get to safety.

Persuade + Int: 2d6 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (2, 2) + 3 + 1 = 8

Once she thinks that they understand, she signals Cor to lead out, and she takes up the rear again, helping to move any stragglers along, but also keeping a sharp eye out for danger.

“Arne Borger, the ITG needs help out there. If you don’t need me on the bridge, I can do a lot more out there. Before this I was a Marine and a Patrol Cop. They need me more than you do…looks to me. With your permission, I’d like to be relieved and go outfit for the sortie.”

Assuming he’s relieved he’ll go suit up in his clothes-like cloth armor, grab his Sword Worlder axe/tool, a backpack full of gear, then ask access to retrieve his weapons from the armory. He grabs his Aluksen Ase carbine, Fletchette Pistol in a shoulder holster and stunner. He loads and stows weapons and gear like the old pro that he is. He slips a headband from his pack around his head containing the personal HUD (holovid version), blinks his eyes in a synching sequence. Doing one last check for all gear and spare ammo, he conducts a commdot check. He looks up with a grin and says,

“Who am I teamed with? I hear a distraction and an extraction is in order!!” For the first time since stepping afoot aboard ship, Rynar seems excited.

(OOC: does the armory have any explosives? If not, has his weeks quietly minding his own business aboard give him insight into any chemicals aboard or in the station’s berth area that can be mixed to form an IED)?

Cor grips the carbine as he watches Zaeta interact with the civilians. He clamps down on a smile as he imagines their very fine clothes getting all muddy and torn as they crawl through the culvert - but it's likely the only way to get them through this in one piece, so it's a sacrifice they'll have to make. When the officer nods her readiness, he returns her nod and gives her a small smile that perhaps reflects what he'd been thinking and then turns to lead the way...

Yep, let's ditch the vehicles and go on foot from here.

Rynar steps out of the ship to survey the port and look at the position of the ITG and the rebel force around the spaceport.

Rynar thinks to himself: There’s two distractions…I don’t think the Calubrian government officials would mind losing a couple of their vehicles in exchange for gaining sanctuary on the Skander. If I can find a combination of substances that will explode or combust when mixed, we could load them in the back of the truck along with mixture of loose shells. Shells can detonate in fire, but the slugs lack the any dangerous velocity of being fired from a firearm…but they sure sound loud. Park it someplace then shoot the cans in the truck bed from a distance…they mix and there goes a fire…added shells for a little firework audio effect…the rebels will think the truck was hit and fighters linger in the area shooting at…something. Should pin them down for a while. Especially if the fuel tank blows. Set that truck 45 degrees out from the direction the ITG needs to ingress. Just need a longer range rifle than I own. Did the arms locker have one? I thought I saw one there.

The fuel truck can be positioned 45 degrees or so off the ingress path the other direction. Open a valve to leave a continuous stream of fuel in its wake the last hundred meters or so. Throw a few shells in the cab, park it, run back and ignite the fuel stream. Same thing only potentially lasts longer than the first!! Might have to shoot the tank a couple times to permit the inert nitrogen to escape and leave only the explosive vapors in the tank. Hydrogen is quite volition and explosive!

Ya, I think that’s how I would do this I were in charge!

“Who’s in charge of the the rescue/distraction operation?”

Rynar, you are the rescue operation, I think. Cor ordered everyone on Skander to stay tight. The Watch Officer will let you take your personal gear and one vehicle (very Sword Worlder), but not a team. Also, the ship is just a merchant vessel and doesn't carry explosives. You might be able to improvise some, but that will take time you may not have.

Zaeta leads the way as Crastor, Cor and Freyjason help usher the dignitaries into the filthy culvert under the road. And none too soon. A firefight erupts over at the roadblock - regular soldiers and rebels fighting it out, maybe. But the noise and chaos will provide good cover for your group to exit the culvert on the other side. The distance to the ship is less than half a mile, but the starport has a fence around it and you're on foot with people in evening dress. It will be slow going. Do you head for the fence or the main gate?

"Is it time to get the weapons hot or what? There's only a launch prohibition people ... can we at least get some cover fire laid down? Can we fire up the ship gravitics so we can aim her at the gate? The boss doesn't want to lose the ship, but I'm willing to bet that he doesn't want us to cower under the Imperium either. Let's get this done!"

"I say we go through or over the fence. The gates are likely to be guarded." Crastor suggests as he listens to the sound of gunfire all to close to them.

'Lance Sergeant/Scout' Corellon "Cor" Anders - 6C97A6 | Second Officer/Astrogation | Gram (Spinward Marches 1223) | Profile Link

Cor shakes his head. "We'll never get these folks over the fence, and unless someone has some bolt cutters handy, I think we'll have to head to the main gate. Fortunately, I've alerted the ship that we're headed that way and we should get a friendly welcoming committee, complete with armored cars to get us to safety." I hope... He thinks as he calls the ship to tell them they are approaching the main gate. Cor calls for all the armored ground cars they have to meet them there, then has another thought and suggests an alternative...

Getting these civilians over the fence seems unlikely, and I can't think of a way through with the gear we have. Frey, I'm not sure what you're asking for. I don't think the ship can fire at the rebels from the ground, and what exactly are their targets if they could? We don't want to start a war, or even get the Sword Confederation involved in a major incident with the Imperium, after all. That'd definitely go against what Sundstrom advised us to avoid - at least that's Cor's opinion.

Anyway, original plan was to have some heavy vehicles (I guess we've got no vehicles armed with weapons, but armored is good enough) to head to the main gate along with enough security forces to cover us as we get the civilians to safety. But Cor will ask for the vehicles to meet us at the fence line, if they can bring bolt cutters or other equipment to get us through. Then we won't need to provoke any rebels that might be at the front gate. Is that possible?

Zaeta (pic) | 6|10|5|10|8|7 | Legal Officer | Homeworld: Torment (Entropic Worlds 0720) | (Additional link to Profile)

Agreed, let's see if we can get someone to meet us at the fence, unless we know that the gate is in our hands. I don't want to get any civilians killed after all this effort trying to avoid a firefight.

And that's when the Watch Officer relays that crewman Rynar is on his way with one of the armored vehicles.

And that’s when the ITG hears a Comm transmission, “Ja Doc Freyja. You ready for a ride? I have your posit! Will be there in a few minutes. Low crawl only enough asses to fill one truck-load to the curbside. Don’t be seen. 5 for the cab and perhaps 5 more to lay in the back. Not gonna be a smooth ride! We’ll make multiple trips to get the rest! How many souls total need to be brought in? Give me two shooters in the cab (1 per side) and 1 or 2 for the bed. This Aint gonna be a smooth ride, but I strung cargo straps across the bed for folks to lay under or hang onto. “

Then you hear a war cry, speed metal, and the sound of a truck engine revving before the Comm transmission cuts.

Reynar leaves vehicle lights off and is driving with aid of his IR/LI goggles. His Fletchette pistol in his right hand, steering mainly with his left…

Plan is to proceed down a path that leads to the fence line where the small patrol is not present and Ram through the fence. Then drive with reckless abandon for the curb side to pickup 10 souls and bring them back in the same way.

Cor nods when he hears the incoming transmission. "We'll load up the civilians first. If we can't fit everyone into the vehicle, the rest of us will follow on foot when the fence is breached." He tells the others. He doesn't trust that the rebels won't hear them when the truck plows through the fence, and the idea of making multiple trips seems unlikely. Still, even if those on foot can cover half the distance in the time Rynar can get back with the vehicle, it'll be less ground to cover.

I'm actually not sure of the size of our party... how many civilians do we have, GM? And how big is this vehicle Rynar is bringing in?

Zaeta wishes the crewmember would have just brought some cutters to make an opening in the fence and not attract attention, but she follows Cor's instructions and chooses the weakest and slowest civilians to get ready to go in the transport when it gets here, comforting the others and telling them it will be okay.

Once through the fence line, Rynar will slow down and go tactically quiet, as best he can while keeping his speed up.

He’ll assess the pickup area as he approaches and look for something to pull behind to conceal his stop and passenger load.

“Frey, Crastor…ya called for a taxi?”

How many can we get on board? The lot of them? Ourselves included?

Corellon "Cor" Anders wrote:

Rynar meets Cor’s gaze grinning with his elbow on the drivers window. Upon hearing Cor’s words, he rolls his eyes and says low enough for only Cor and other Sword Worlders to hear…

Some command it while others demand it…would have been a lot quicker for you to have directed a plan already.

He opens driver’s side door with a fleeting grimace and glance toward Cor. Then he points to a few standing up from their prone position.
Self loading baggage in the cab. Shooters on the outside. Injured who should lie down…in the bed…under the cargo straps. Need a shooter in back. Doc, we takin’ ya with the wounded? Med kit’s in the bed.

Rynar helps the injured into the bed. As an after thought, he looks at the locals in the cab and asks:
Can any of ya shoot? He draws the suppressed auto-pistol from his cross draw holster, hands it to him/her, and says:
Now reposition yourself to the aft seat cab window. You’re defense on my left. He looks to the guy in the right from cab seat. He brandished his Ase:

Think you can handle this? Good! He tosses him his own Ase. It’s just a semi-auto. Watch the kick, and make each trigger squeeze count. You got right and forward defense. Doc, you got rear shooter from the bed?

Anybody starts shooting at us, you fire right back then duck. The metal on this truck is armored. I ain’t stopping for anything, but If the rebels somehow stop me, you let ‘em have everything you got! Ok? Oh ya, I want my weapons back! Here we go!

Cor allows a small grin to erupt on his face. "We had to make it up as we went, surely you of all people can appreciate that. Besides, how much more warning did you need, I sent the plan over the comms more than an hour ago. Only the point of extraction changed at the last minute once we could survey the area. Seems that the rebels might be pinned down a short distance away, but that doesn't mean they won't be here soon after your little stunt. Ever hear of bolt cutters? What, they don't have any aboard the Skander?"

He makes certain all the civilians are aboard (or as many as will fit) before deciding how he and the others will return to the ship. As the civilians board the vehicle, he keeps a watchful eye in the direction of the main gate, his carbine held at the ready.

See page 4 of "Maps and Images", above. You've got a 6-ton SUV fitted with seats for two in the front and four passengers. If you cram them in, you can uncomfortably fit nine people, plus the driver.

You have seventeen Bularians with you, plus you folks.

That would account for the seating area I presume, but how about the cargo area? Looks like it holds 1 ton of cargo? I'm presuming that area is nearly empty? If a total of 10 is the maximum limit for the SUV, let's get those who are having the most difficulty keeping up get in there.
The rest of us will follow on foot. Once those nine are dropped off, Rynar can double back along his route and meet us. If we run into trouble, we've got the comms to give him a heads up - and vice versa.

You can get half your 24 people on the vehicle at a time. It'll be miserably uncomfortable, but it's a short ride.

Rynar, how are you getting through the fence? Are you driving around to a gate, or are you just going through the fence?

Right before departing, Rynar checks the live video broadcast feed on his wrist computer to assess the position of rebel patrols around the starport perimeter. If the patrol responded to his initial fence breach, then he'll pick another place in the fence to ram through with open space on the inside that affords a drive way from the fence to the ship. Otherwise, he'll speed through the initial fence breach.

Trying to not draw attention to the pedestrian friendlies' location as he departs, but then bustering back as quickly as possible to the ship. If the firefight at the underpass blockade still is ongoing, he'll be less careful. Lights off...using his IR/LI goggles for visuals.

I'm going to wait a bit to make another post until the GM confirms in a game post that the fence is actually breached. Going back, I think the only one that has mentioned the breach is Rynar, correct? At the moment, in terms of the 'official GM posts' in the adventure, I think that our team and the civilians are currently on the 'wrong' side of the fence and Rynar is speeding toward it, intending to ram his way through.

Rynar stifles a yawn with the back of his hand…

That's right. I don't believe there are YET any breaches in the fence, but it looks as though Rynar's about to make one.

Those of you hiding in the culvert hear the loud CRASH as the ship's SUV slams through the fence and comes bouncing along the ditch outside the spaceport. Rynar has arrived.

Cor shakes his head as the brash crewman puts a hole through the fence. "Well, if the rebels didn't know where we're at, they sure as hell know now. Let's move fast." He leads the others, along with the civilians, across the distance as fast as they can go, his carbine held at the ready as he exchanges words briefly with Rynar and keeps a watchful eye out. When the armored vehicle rolls out, Cor motions the others onward toward the ship. "Let's go! Run as fast as you dare, but don't lose your damn footing. A twisted ankle would slow us down to a crawl! Crastor, you take point! I'll take rear guard! Frey and Zaeta, keep this mob together and keep an eye out as best you can to watch our flanks!"

Standing guard as the civilians get loaded up as much as possible, getting the slowest ones into the vehicle first. The rest of us will follow in their wake on foot (jogging along as fast as we dare), and hopefully Rynar will get to the ship and back out to pick the rest of us up before the rebels get here. I think it's only a half mile or so, correct?

Frey quickly scans the injured, trying to target who would really need assistance, and who might just need a stim.

Just as soon as the vehicle is stuffed with people and Cor give him the “Go” signal, Rynar peels out and burns rubber back for the gap in the fence. He drives as fast through the maze of the starport as he dares…knowing a wreck will slow him down from getting back for his shipmates.

He keys his Comm:

“Skadersvik, Rynar returning with a full load. 12 local pax…most wounded. I’m coming in hot right to the cargo ramp. Get another vehicle and 1 more driver. I’m stopping, jumping in the other vehicle with that driver and heading right out again to get our crew! Make it a quick turn and be ready for me! You offload the pax and triage and secure them”.

Rynar intends to let the other driver drive, and he will get dropped off at the starship fuel truck. He’ll get in and follow the second SUV towards the gate. He intends to position and blow it on the fence line once all friendlier are inside the wire. The resulting fire should hold any trailing rebels back out of the starport…at least for a while…buy some time!

Cor has already started the group moving. Crastor on point, Cor as rear guard, Frey and Zaeta watching the flanks of the group we've got on foot.

By "gate" I meant the hole in the fence line that Rynar created already and he monitors the feed to ensure his shipmates are running towards.
