So, we need:
1) Stiehle to get ready for his first term
2) Malinor/Crastor to choose a homeworld and Background Skills
3) Daniel / Yuri to choose a Sword World homeworld.
4) Zanbabe / Zaeta to choose a homeworld

All the Sword Worlds are in the Player's Guide. If you don't know for sure, pick the high-population capital world of Gram or the idyllic garden world of Durendal.

Yup. Welcome aboard!

FIRST TERM

Everyone can go ahead and handle their first term now.

Also:

Malinor/Crastor: choose a homeworld and Background Skills
Daniel / Yuri: choose a Sword World homeworld.
Zanbabe / Zaeta: choose a homeworld

UPP 67677C -- Homeworld: Narsil (Spinward Marches 0927)

Question: do we have Scholar spoken for or no?

Crastor said he wanted to join the Navy and be an engineer.

Freyjason said he wanted to be a Noble or Patrol.

Kadal Kuttner said he wanted to be a Merchant.

Yuri Sokolov said he wanted to be a Marine.

Zaeta wants to be an Agent.

Corellon has not stated an intended career.

And I’m guessing we’re not going to hear from Qyntessential in time.

So, no. No one has spoken up for Scholar.

Or for Army, Citizen, Drifter, Entertainer, Rogue or Scout.

'Lance Sergeant/Scout' Corellon "Cor" Anders - 6C97A6 | Second Officer/Astrogation | Gram (Spinward Marches 1223) | Profile Link

Scout for Corellon, specifically the Explorer. Grew up working on vehicles as a mechanic for the most part - did some flying and driving (mostly to figure out what needed fixing and whether the job got done right) and dreamed of leaving Gram behind and seeing other worlds beyond the grimy, industrialized one on which he was born.

I'm thinking of going the pre-career education route, figuring to give him a foundation in science and astrogation. Is this a viable plan? If I do go this route, is this considered my first term?

Yes to both questions. Go to it!

Here's a primer I wrote for the other campaign. Maybe it will help here too.

IF YOU DECIDE ON A UNIVERSITY:

STEP ONE: Roll for Entry. Roll 2d6 and add your EDU DM. The DM’s can be seen on p. 10 of the CRB. It’s -1 for a 5, +0 for 6-8, +1 for 9-11 and +2 for a 12. If your adjusted die roll is a 6+, you’re off to college. If you fail, go straight to your choice of careeers.

STEP TWO: Choose a Level 0 and a Level 1 skill from this list: Admin, Advocate, Animals (training or veterinary), Art (any), Astrogation, Electronics (any), Engineer (any), Language (any), Medic, Navigation, Profession (any), Science (any).

STEP THREE: Increase your EDU by +1 (remember, it can’t be higher than a 12 for this campaign. I’m no fun that way.)

STEP FOUR: Roll on a the Pre-Career Event Table (p. 17). Resolve any attendant dice rolls. Consider the Connections Rule (p. 19) and whether you can connect to any other Traveller this way.

STEP FIVE: Roll for Graduation. Roll 2d6+INT DM. If 6+, you graduated. If 10+, you graduated with honors.

STEP SIX: If you didn’t graduate, stop.

STEP SEVEN: If you graduated, increase both of the skills from Step Two by 1 (to 1 and 2, respectively).

STEP EIGHT: Increase your EDU by another +1 (Still can’t go above a 12).

STEP NINE: Note the modifiers for getting into various careers. Useful if you change careers.

STEP TEH: If your next term will be in a military service (Army, Navy, Marines), you can roll for a commission now.

__________________________________________________

IF YOU DECIDE ON A MILITARY ACADEMY:

STEP ONE: Roll to see if you qualify. The entry die roll is different for each service. If you fail, go straight to your choice of careeers.

STEP TWO: Gain all the service skills for your chosen career at 0, just like basic training.

STEP THREE: Roll on a the Pre-Career Event Table (p. 17). Resolve any attendant dice rolls. Consider the Connections Rule (p. 19) and whether you can connect to any other Traveller this way.

STEP FOUR: Roll for Graduation. Roll 2d6+INT DM. If 7+, you graduated. If 11+, you graduated with honors. But you gain a DM+1 if your END is 8+, and a DM+1 if your SOC is 8+.

STEP FIVE: If you didn’t graduate, STOP. You may still enter the career served by the Academy so long as your graduation roll wasn’t a 2 or less, but you may not make a Commission roll on your first term. If your graduation roll was a 2 or less, you must qualify to enter that career (but may still automatically enter any other career per the house rule.

STEP SIX: If your next term is going to be in the career served by the Academy, select any three Service Skills for that career and increase them to 1.

STEP SEVEN: Increase EDU by 1. (Still can’t go above a 12).

STEP EIGHT: If you graduated with honors, increase SOC by 1. (Still can’t go above a 12).

STEP NINE: If you Graduated with honors, you gain an automatic commission in the career served by the Academy.

STEP TEN: If you Graduated without honors, make a Commission roll for that service, with a DM+2.

_____________________________________________________

IF YOU ENTER A CAREER WITHOUT HIGHER EDUCATION:

STEP ONE: Ignore the qualification roll. Per the house rule, you’re in automatically.

STEP TWO: Pick an Assignment (sub-career).

STEP THREE: Go through Basic Training (i.e., take all the service skills at 0).

STEP FOUR: Roll for “Survival”. The die roll is different for every Assignment.

STEP FIVE: Roll on the Event table for your Assignment. Resolve any attendant die rolls. Consider the Connections Rule (p. 19) and whether you can connect to any other Traveller this way.

STEP SIX : Roll for Commission (military careers only. You may only roll for a Commission on the first term of your career. However if your SOC is 9+, you can roll on each term, but with DM-1 for every term after the first.

STEP SEVEN: Roll for Advancement. You may not roll for Advancement if you gained a commission in this term. The die roll is different for every Assignment. If you advance, gain an extra roll on any skill table for your career and Assignment. Increase your rank. You may also gain any bonuses from that rank. If your roll is equal to or less than the number of terms spent in this career, you must leave the career. If you roll a natural 12, you -must- remain in the career another term.

Zaeta (pic) | 6|10|5|10|8|7 | Legal Officer | Homeworld: Torment (Entropic Worlds 0720) | (Additional link to Profile)

Oh sorry... I did, but just put it on my profile, not here. I chose Torment (Entropic Worlds 0720). It was listed in the Sword Worlds area and I thought being from a prison planet would be interesting. Her parents are prisoners and have to stay, but they want her to leave and have a life, and she wants to see what the world is like, and they get a sympathetic guard to agree that she should be allowed to take the exam to get into an offworld college.

College as Escape?: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3

There not being anything like a real school on that world though, she just wasn't able to pass the exam.

Sadly, she then worked with the guard to just get a chance to work for the government, and with him pulling strings, was able to secure a job as an Intelligence Agent.

She went through Basic Training

Streetwise 0 On this one, Tarondor's rule allows me a different background skill because this one doubled up, so taking Mechanic.
Drive 0
Investigate 0
Flyer 0
Recon 0
Gun Combat 0

Survival: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (1, 2) + 1 = 4

But unfortunately, was involved in a mishap

Mishap: 1d6 ⇒ 3

where an investigation went critically wrong, and of course it was blamed on her, because her parents were criminals.

Advocate: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 5) = 9

Sorry... this says I rolled high enough that I get to keep my "benefit roll" from this term, but I don't see that in your instructions, so not sure what I am missing. I'm guessing it just means I get to keep my level 0 skills, but not sure.

Thankfully, her name was cleared, but it was *also* clear that there was no room anymore for her with the government. Luckily, she was already off-planet, and that was sort of the point.

Pretty sure that everything stops there... no events because I am kicked out of the career.

'Lance Sergeant/Scout' Corellon "Cor" Anders - 6C97A6 | Second Officer/Astrogation | Gram (Spinward Marches 1223) | Profile Link

Having grown up on the dirty, industrialized world of Gram, a young mechanic who dreams of one day visiting other worlds beyond the stars scrimps and saves until he is able to afford attending the local university - hoping that his grades and efforts will earn him the grants and scholarships to keep him there for his full term.

Entry (EDU): 2d6 ⇒ (2, 6) = 8

The young man makes the most of his opportunity and hits the books hard, learning what he can of the planets and how to get across the universe - once he manages to get a ship of his own!

Science (Planetology) 0
Astrogation 1
EDU +1

Pre-Career Event: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4

But during his first year, Cor falls in with a few n'er-do-wells and engages in a supposedly harmless prank that goes terribly wrong! Utilizing his knowledge of mechanics, Corellon rigs an annoying professor's hovercar to spin madly in circles on the quad...

SOC: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7

...and when the craft crashes into a tree, sending the professor to the hospital for more than a month, Cor finds that he has made an enemy that will dog him for the rest of his years.

Graduation (INT): 2d6 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5

And though Corellon manages to expand his knowledge during his single year at the university, he simply doesn't do well enough on the very tough exams to stay on and graduate. Not to mention a certain professor that seems intent on keeping him from even getting into his second year!

Still, Cor isn't one to give up easily and he looks for a crew to sign on with - one that is headed off world and hopefully into the vast reaches of space. Maybe with enough hard work and a little luck, he'll still be able to fulfill his dreams.

Not an auspicious start! Hey, I haven't started my career and I've got an Enemy that wants to see me dead or in prison! Fun stuff!! Still, we shall see how the rest of his career as a Scout winds up very soon! Per the Connections rule, anyone want to join me as the n'er-do-well that helped me get kicked out of the university? :) Alternatively, maybe someone joins him on the crew of a scout ship during his career? Would that be possible?

Hey, nice idea! Cor would definitely have done the rigging (having some mechanical aptitude from his background), and you would have been the investigating officer that let me off the hook? That sounds pretty cool to me, if Tarondor approves!

The Weapon X project fundamentally both intrigued and disgusted Frey: while certainly he himself should want to be able to fly as Freyja's namesake, and he should want to create new implants, the process of integrating gravitics to a human skeletal structure was nowhere near where it should have been for a "human trial"

Frey left Narsil Metropolitan Hospital: his disgust was intact, yet he had enhanced the family name as much as he needed to at this point. Time to take that for a ride ...

You're right. I did leave that bit out by accident. At the end of career, which is right now for you, you will roll on the Mustering Out table for that career. This is saying you don't lose out on that roll. Go to p. 22 of the CRB (the Agent career) and find the table titled "Mustering Out Benefits". Choose to roll on either the Cash or Benefits column. Roll 1d6 and that's your benefit.

Cool. I'll take a look, then. Wondering if maybe he joins the military for a short stint and then becomes a Scout (if he doesn't wash out earlier.) Is that a possibility? Take a term or two in the Army and then try for Scout so long as the rolls continue favorably?

Hmm... the mustering out table has seven options, but we are just rolling a d6 still, right? Am I supposed to be adding a bonus from some stat?

Mustering Out: 1d6 ⇒ 6

So, looks like Zaeta gets to keep the cybernetic implant she was outfitted with during her intense work in the field. Bonus.

(Still have to figure out what I can get in that regard though, so this will likely be on hold till I have time to look through the options after work.)

There are a few possible types of bonuses on that table: one type comes from career events, the other comes from advancement to lvl5 or lvl6. Very tough to reach level 5 in a career (with only 5 terms), and you are already mustering out of this one ;)

Yep. That's very common. Feel free to switch careers. Just be aware that you will have to qualify for any career past your first.

No. Sometimes an event will give you a modifier, but typically it's just the 1d6 roll.

Got it. So if I fail to qualify for the Scout career, can I roll to qualify in another career? Or just stay in the Army? Or would I be done at that point?

FIRST, you decide whether to leave the previous career. Then you go through "Mustering Out".

THEN you try to get into your next career. If you fail, you must either become a Drifter or submit to the Draft.

Interesting! So you can only take the Draft option once, it appears. And this (or Drifter) is ONLY if you fail to qualify for a new career? So looking at the flow chart, if you fail a Survival check and get the boot out of your career, you can try to start a new career in the same manner, is that correct? For instance, Zaeta was booted out of Agent, so she can try to qualify for another career in this way, or do the Draft or Drifter if she fails to get into her next career?

Correct, except that you can always -choose- to become a Drifter.

'Lance Sergeant/Scout' Corellon "Cor" Anders - 6C97A6 | Second Officer/Astrogation | Gram (Spinward Marches 1223) | Profile Link

After washing out of the university, Cor looks for an interesting opportunity in a scouting expedition of some kind. But nothing appeals to him and his funds are beginning to run dry. He decides not to return to his family, fearing he would only be a burden on their own finances and so tries out for the army, trying to get into the armed services on his own terms, rather than entering the draft and placed at the whims of whatever recruiting officer he encounters.

Qualification (END): 2d6 ⇒ (5, 3) = 8 vs END 5+

Accepted into the program (Rank 0), he endures a difficult and demanding basic training and quickly finds that his skill set is a good fit for the cavalry unit, specifically as a crewmember of a heavy gunship. Though his desire to see other worlds his quickly satisfied to a certain extent, he wasn't exactly imagining terrifying skirmishes with hostile forces bent on killing him!
Vacc Suit 0
Athletics 0
Gun Combat 0
Recon 0
Melee 0
Heavy Weapons 0
Gun Combat 1 (? - See OOC question)

Advanced Education Table: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Electronics 0

Still, he learns a bit about electronics during his stint as the crew pushes the 'college boy' into the field. And at least he feels safer (for the most part) inside the bulky gunship instead of outside of it!

Survival (DEX): 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (4, 1) + 2 = 7 vs DEX 7+
Event: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 1) = 4
Stealth 1

During his tour, despite a few close calls (in one instance, the gunship suffered a direct hit by an enemy skiff strafing their position and two of his crewmates were killed, another badly injured and sent back home) he manages to survive his four year stint on an urbanised planet that resembles his own homeworld of Gram. Again, not exactly the kind of 'new worlds' he hopes to one day find and explore in the vastness of space. But at least he learns some tricks to moving around without revealing oneself to the enemy and he ultimately decides that the life lessons he's picking up in the Army could have some real impact in teaching him how to survive on unknown worlds. For he is still dreaming of becoming a true explorer with a ship of his own one day.

Commission (SOC): 2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7 vs SOC 8+
Advancement (INT): 2d6 ⇒ (6, 4) = 10 vs INT 5+
Recon 1 (? - See OOC question)
Advanced Education Table: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Tactics (Military) 1

He elects to stay on for another tour, and though he doesn't make it into the officer program he is promoted to Lance Corporal - which has a certain ring to his ears!

A little confused by the Ranks and Bonuses Table. Hope I did everything else correctly. So Rank 0 automatically gets Gun Combat 1, is that correct? Or do you only get that if you advance FROM that Rank? My reading is that you get that skill or bonus just attaining the Rank, so I'm thinking Cor gets that and Recon 1 (for Rank 1) since he advanced in the Army. Is that a correct interpretation?

Yuri Sokolov - 87C665 | Third Officer/Operations | Mjolnir (Swordworlds) |

Second Term:

MArines - Star Marines

Skill and Training-Service Skills 1d6 ⇒ 3- Tactics

Survival-END 6+: 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (1, 3) + 2 = 6 !!Close!!

Event: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 2) = 5 You are given advanced training in a specialist field. Roll EDU 8+ to gain any one skill of your choice at level 1.
EDU 8+ 2d6 ⇒ (5, 2) = 7 grrrr...so close!!

Advancement EDU 6+: 2d6 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5 these dice hate me :-)

A very lackluster 2nd Term!! Let's hope things start to swing his way!!

Zaeta (pic) | 6|10|5|10|8|7 | Legal Officer | Homeworld: Torment (Entropic Worlds 0720) | (Additional link to Profile)

Zaeta, having escaped her home planet and gotten a little bit of experience with the world, decides she wants to try to get into college again. I mean, try, try again, right?

College (EDU)?: 2d6 - 1 ⇒ (4, 5) - 1 = 8

Hurrah. Even with her past failures hanging over her, she gets in!

She decides that she wants to study something completely different than what she has done before, so she studies

Animals (training) 1
Animals (veterinary) 0

(EDU +1)

since animals seemed way easier to deal with than people.

Pre-Career Event: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7

(Life Event instead)

Life Event: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7

She gains a contact during her studies. Her professor, Zeke Davinstone, admires her love for animals and her as a person, and tells her to call on him if she ever needs anything.

Not sure if that is how you do contacts (just make them up)... let me know if not.

Graduation?: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 2) = 6

Yes! Feeling accomplished, and like she might be able to succeed at something, Zaeta graduates from college.

Animals (training) 1 > 2
Animals (veterinary) 0 > 1

(EDU +1)

That's right. Lots of firearms practice in the Army.

Training, Day 1: Get a haircut and learn to march
Training, Days 2-69: Shoot stuff.
Training, Day 70: Get shoes shined, get new assignment.

That is correct.

Yes, you're do for some attention from Lady Luck!

I need second terms from Crastor, Kadal and Freyjason.

And I need a homeworld from Crastor (in the Sword Worlds!)

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Ordinarily, that's exactly what you do, but for this campaign, I'm going to try to assign some contacts, rivals and enemies that might actually appear during the campaign. I probably can't accommodate everyone, but at least some of them will come up.

RETCON / CHRONOMANCY: Freyjason does NOT muster out after his first term, in spite of his reservations re the hospital's research programs.

Career: SCHOLAR (Term 2)
Assignment: Physician

2d6 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3 Training (Physician Table) Investigate 1
2d6 ⇒ (5, 2) = 7 SURVIVAL YEP :)
2d6 ⇒ (3, 5) = 8 EVENT: Cheating 2d6 ⇒ (1, 5) = 6: Enemy & lost Benefit roll
2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7 Advancement NOPE :(

I automatically get into the Navy from the military academy.

I am doing Engineer/Gunner.

I am going with the Engineer/Gunner chart.

Engineer/Gunner: 1d6 ⇒ 1 Engineer 0

Survival INT 6+: 2d6 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3 Navy life is hard

Mishap: 1d6 ⇒ 4 Crastor was falsely accused of actions leading to the death of others. He was innocent and keeps his Benefit, but gains an Enemy. I think this lets me stay in the Navy. But I am not sure so I will stop here.

I will come from Mjolnir.

Freyjason, you may be using an older version of the Core Rulebook. Gun Combat is now divided only into Archaic, Energy and Slug weapons. The pistol/rifle division is gone.

Kadal Kuttner, you're up for your second term! Kadal Kuttner: Please tell us what your event was last time and give us a little narration in the subsequent terms.

You are correct. That Mishap permits you to make the decision to stay or go. You may roll for advancement now.

Folks, don't forget:

A) The Connections Rule (p. 19).

B) Anagathics (p. 49).

Let me know if I can add this to my term?

TBH I'm not sure I ever thought of using them early ... would be cool to start this campaign looking 22 though
