Dario had caught his breath and welcomed the bit of magic to clean the ashes and smoke that clung to him like a mother's embrace. How useful that simple spell would have been down within the Hold. Quietly he listened to the talks between the goblin, the townsfolk, and the companions that had come to his aid when work needed done, he finally sat up from a post and stepped in closer.

"Don't make no sense to send a goblin to call for aid and then set a building on fire...unless you were hoping to sabotage their call for aid." Looking down at the goblin, Dario gave his best charming smile while he reloaded another bullet into the pistol. "As soon as we treat the wounded, you've got my pistol Warbal. Anyone willing to let children burn, I have a problem with."

Nursing his shoulder where the fire mephit had sunk its teeth in, Dario would turn towards where triage was being set up. He stopped though, turning to group.

"All of you did amazing in there. I don't think I would've pulled out of there without your help. We're a damn good team. Let me know when ya'll are ready." Tipping his hat again, he made his way over for treatment.

Warbal fidgets nervously, approaching the gathering that includes the lot of you, the guard, and Greta. She places a hand on the dagger Cevendyll gave her and takes a deep breath, steadying herself. "Warbal is not knowing any goblins with ugly big heads. Warbal is only knowing about goblins in many troubles! That is what Warbal was needing Heroes for. The Bumblebrashers are needing many helps!”

Greta frowned at Warbal. "Yes, your petition. I'm afraid that will need to wait a moment, as we see to folks here. She nodded at Caiten’s suggestion, and was about to go and do just that when the second guard, Conrick, jogged up looking disappointed.

”The little blighter escaped. But wouldn’t take a genius to know where he’s going, though. Made a beeline out of town for Hellknight Hill, 'fore he hit the treeline.”

Warbal danced from foot to foot in nervousness. ”Bumblebrashers would not be doing this!”

"Hellknight Hill?!" Joran looks in the direction of said location before looking over at Caiten. Nodding, "Go ahead and go get it. There's a few minutes to spare. I need to go get a new shirt and my gear as well. I'll be right back." Joran then immediately takes off for home, not wasting another moment.

As he makes his way home at an extremely quick walking pace, Got to remember to find my "ol' pal" Calmont when this is done. Me and him need to have a nice... long... and not-so-friendly talk.

Once Joran makes it home he heads straight for the bedroom and grabs a new shirt from within his dresser. He then digs his armor, his weapons and his backpack out of the trunk that sits at the end of his bed. Throwing it all on the bed, he puts on his shirt, dons his armor and stows his pack and his weapons upon his back. "Okay, time to find us a bad guy. Or guys." Joran then immediately heads back out toward the others.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Arriving back, "Alright! Let's get this show on the road! No one comes in here and tries to burn my town down. Who's all going?" he looks around, realizing he doesn't really know most of these people. "By the way, I'm Joran Bravestone. I don't believe I've officially met any of you. Well I know that guy," he motions toward Caiten, "somewhat. You were a huge help there toward the end. Thanks for that, buddy," he gives a nod.

"Thank you. I will be back shortly."

Caiten leaves and is gone for about 10 minutes. He returns with a shortbow across his back and quiver of arrows on the hip opposite Sulee's satchel. Sulee is now dressed in a rather masculine looking shirt and pants instead of the dress she was in earlier, her hair is still a bit of a mess, and she is looking rather sullen.

"It may be better to simply replace your hair later if it is that important."

Caiten hands the borrowed dagger back to Cevendyll. "Thank you for that."

Hearing Dario's words about someone causing townsfolk to burn, he walks over to him and says, "Yes. I am in agreement - someone needs to be tracked down and murdered. But let's take the time to make sure that we get the right someone."

And something seems to be troubling you. But I am glad to have you with us."

Warbal looked at Dario curiously. "Warbal is not having your... What word you said. Warbal is goblin but understands not to be stealing things.". She sighs. " All of Bumblebrashers is being good goblins. Some are not smart, but none would be burning neighbors. Warbal came to Call because she is not been getting messages, not been getting visits. And then Warbal is seeing red smoke from the hill." . She pointed in the direction the guard had indicated the big headed goblin ran. "Red is meaning danger."

DC 10 Society:
Hellknight Hill. An imposing name for an imposing place. Roughly 80 years, the Order of Hellknights built a fortress atop it, finding Breachill to be a suitably orderly place to resupply from. Citadel Altaerein. A few decades later the Order relocated to Varisia, and the numbers of Knights stationed here at the Citadel began to wane. Eight years ago, the last of them left, leaving the place abandoned. The Bumblebrashers were never ones to overlook good fortune, and they made themselves at home. Townsfolk avoid it, as the goblin's are not the only squatters present.

Warbal turns to Lisi's question. "Warbal can be trying. Bumblebrashers is not doing so goods with doves. They is too tasty. And only a few are reading."

Greta and Selma Ann approached the group, having spent the past ten minutes or so urging folks to return home if they weren't badly hurt, and to arrange treatment for those who had. Most weren't - aside from some nasty coughs and a few bruises, the Breachtons attending the Call had gotten away unharmed.

The council president smiled sincerely, her teeth seeming extra white and clean when compared to her smudged and sooty face. Selma Ann held a small coffer and wore a matching expression.

"Well today certainly didn't go to plan. Yet we found ourselves a group of heroes willing to rise to the Call nonetheless." Greta gestured and Selma Ann opened the coffer. "Please accept this on behalf of Breachill, for all the folks still with us today due to your fast thinking."

Inside, on a bed of black velvet were four crystal vials containing various liquids. Two were ruby red in color, one clear, and one a thick dark syrup, each labelled. There was also a hefty bag of silver pieces.

Treasure:
2 x minor healing potion, 1 lesser antidote, 1 lesser antiplague, 400 sp

"We don't have vast riches at our disposal, but we know those of your persuasion find such remedies useful. And there's more -- we set funds aside for the Call each month. If you lot are willing to go and assist the Bumblebrashers, we can pay an additional ten gold pieces, each, upon your return. With an additional five each if you bring back our arsonist alive to stand trial."

"I'm kidding, I'm only kidding. We got this," he tells her, giving a nod of confidence. He then cuts his eyes over at Selma. "Hey, Selma Ann. How you doin' besides being all pretty?" he asks, giving her quite the friendly wink. Smiling in a far too charming manner, "You know...," he starts but realizes this is not the time nor the place. "Okay! Well... we gotta get us a bad guy and bring them back alive. Everyone hear that! Let's bring 'em back alive, folks! I'm ready when y'all are!" Definitely something to ponder - as he rubs his chin in thought.

"Maybe we could establish consensus on departure readiness? I am fairly ready ... but like Caiten, I did not exactly arrive at Town Hall ready to scurry off into the woods. I know the hill is not that far, but we might consider how long we will be there first, possibly purchase some rations so that we could stay on-site longer: maybe we could even investigate the path of the escapee for tracks or foot prints?"

Cev smiles at the team

"I think 'ready' might be a touch less of a now thing than maybe a preparedness thing. Now is good, prepared is better."

Dario waits patiently, listening to the team talk amongst themselves about preparation. The gunslinger was ready to go at a moment's notice and was only mildly perturbed at the hesitation of those that had magic. It was a whole different game outside of the Mana Wastes and he needed to adjust his own priorities first.

While they discussed, he found a nice, clean place nearby where he could still keep an ear out. With an almost mechanical speed, he began the process of cleaning, disassembling, and reassembling his firearm. To anyone who watched, it was like his fingers were a blur.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Apologies, I should have mentioned in the previous blurb about the citadel that it's only a mile outside of town. With that roll, Caiten, you know there is a road all the way there through the woods, albeit an overgrown one after 8 years of disuse.

Greta flashes Joran a tight smile that doesn't reach her eyes, and she blinks rapidly a few times. It's an expression that says 'Oh, Joran.' Selma Ann glances at her fellow councilor with an eyebrow raised and a bemused look. Joran's antics are well known to just about every attractive woman in town.

Warbal fidgeted some more. "Hmmm....Bumblebrashers are being crafty. Good at hiding and running and cowering. If they are still being alives now, they are still being alives tomorrow. Warbal is trusting in your choices."

With all this talk about heading for the former hellknight fortress, Yasamina seems in thought for a few moments.

"Well. I wasn't really planning on going, but I might as well. I need to pack first. I'll meet you here soon. If you're not here, I will catch up."

She makes haste towards Shelyn's Smile, and disappears behind the gathering crowd.

GM:
Yasamina locks her door behind her when she enters her room. She quickly takes out a candle, sealing wax, inkpot, and a parchment from the desk. She starts writing a letter as fast as the ink permits.

Quote:

Dear Uncle,

if you hear about the fire in Breachill, note that I was there, but I am fine. I was invited to join a group to explore the the nearby hellknight citadel - Altaerein, if you have heard about it. I accepted and we leave tonight. I am not sure whether I will be able to send any letters while we are there, so please be patient. I will contact you at the first opportunity.

I will pick up my mail when I get back. In your last letter, you mentioned a circus in the local area. I have not seen anything of the sort, but would be delighted to see it. Let me know if you find out any specifics regarding its location, and I will go take a look with some friends.

With love,

- Yasamina

She seals the letter, and puts it into a fold in her clothes. Then she takes out her backpack, and starts throwing anything useful into it.

When packed, Yasamina walks over to the Carpenter Guild to find Meebo.

"Hi. I'm in a bit of a rush. Thanks for the box. Here's the rest of your fee.", she hands over the envelope. "Say - I am going to explore the area. You happen to know a leathermaker here with a few spare scroll cases I could buy? I would like to keep my drawings and poems dry."

The intention is to purchase a few scroll cases that would preferably be waterproof. I have found [url="https://2e.aonprd.com/Equipment.aspx?ID=1208"]THIS item that somewhat fits, but want to flavour it as a simple waterproof tube. One costs 2 sp, so I would get four pieces for 8 SP if you permit.

I would also like to purchase Thieve's Tools (3 gp), and a Crowbar (5sp), putting my total to 3gp 7sp.

Once the business is done, she puts a selection of drawings and poems into the tubes heads back to the town hall.

Yasamina returns some 30-40 minutes later. "Whew, sorry. Had to pack a little more than I anticipated."

Two hilts are secured on her belt, with the actual blades covered by her clothing. There is also some sort of metallic contraption sticking out from one of her pockets. She puts her backpack on the ground. It has a bedroll secured to it with two leather straps, and a cup hanging by a hook.

"Tadaaa!", she spreads her arms wide, and makes a gesture of grandeur and smiles. "Ready when you are.

"There are a few things I need to attend to before I'm ready to go." Oren departs and heads out to wherever they might sell weapons in town.

Looking for a shortbow (3gp) and 15 arrows, since Oren will probably need a ranged option at some point

Regardless of the outcome of the search, Oren will return to the others."I'm all ready to go if everyone else is"

Yasami:
Meebo takes the envelope with a smile. "Thanks much! Oh, a leatherworker? Let me introduce you to my friend Duba! Don't let his appearance frighten you, he's a very nice seven foot tall lizard."

Meebo led you through Shelyn's Smile's guild headquarters. Plenty of artisans had private shops, often in the first floor of their homes, but each guild had offices here, each with a small storefront. Each week on Starday, the storefronts here would be open so folks could browse a wide variety of crafted goods without trekking all over town.

Fortunately for you, that meant not needed to visit a smelly tannery.

"Duba! My friend here is in need of a few scroll cases."

Emerging from the office Meebo called into was a towering, lean humanoid with dark turquoise scales and and array of impressive spikes decorating his skull. The lizardfolk leatherworker had to duck through the doorway, and his expression was hard to read for folks unfamiliar with his kind. (Perception or Society DC 17 if you care enough to try)

"Form or function?" His voice was hard to read as well, a sound akin to gravel crunching and air hissing at the same time. He certainly got right to the point.

You describe your needs, especially the key point of them being waterproofed, and he rummages around in the back and produces four of them, as requested. Silver is exchanged, and he promptly returns to his office.

Yep, all that stuff is fine!

Oren:
Asking around, Oren is directed to Quarters and Bits. The façade of the building gave the impression of two different stores-- Quarters sold general goods like rations and tools and had the look of a log cabin, Bits sold weapons, armor, and things that cater more towards adventuring and was made from mortered stone, with fake crenellations along the roof. The illusion of two separate stores vanished when Oren entered, as the whole building was one contiguous space.

"AH! A new customer! Fantastic!"

A halfling wearing a ridiculously big hat waved from the counter. The place was empty at the moment, as word had spread of the fire and folks had other things on their minds besides shopping.

"Crink Twiddleton, at your service sir! What might you be seeking?"

...

Oren soon learned to dislike Crink, who was sleazy and tried repeatedly to push a multitude of expensive purchases on him. "Why settle for a piddly little shortbow, when you you can have this longbow carved by one of Breachill's most esteemed fletchers for the low low price of fifty gold?"

By the time Oren extricated himself with what he'd come for, his patience was thin indeed. These were the people he'd come to save?

He heard laughter, and watched as a little girl chased after her dog, running down the cobblestone road. The dog found a mud puddle to the side of the road and started rolling around in it, to the girl's delight. She jumped in, too, hopping up and down with an expression of pure innocence and joy on her face.

Oren nodded to himself. Yes. Yes, they were.

He rejoined the others.

Shaking his head, "Yeah I'm not picking up anything either. This guy must've disguised his tracks really well. Impressive but not impressive enough. Anyway, it doesn't matter. I can get us to Hellknight Hill. It's not too far; let's move." Joran then starts in said direction.

Sulee watches that with obvious longing. "Ooh. Could you do that for me too?"

Also, the nat1/nat20 rule would make that first Medicine check a crit fail. As well as the Track check.

I wasn't sure about the crit fail rule in PFE2--in that case, Lisi has now caused someone 1d8 damage and possibly killed them. GOOD TIMES

I'll be the sacrifice for that damage. Worst case, I'll still be up and moving alright.

Dario let the druid approach him, the leather armor moved to the side to expose the bite wound from the fire mephit. It was an unusual wound, one that the druid had never really encountered or had to deal with before. A few attempts later and the plaster that had been placed was not nearly enough to soothe the wound right. It needed to be removed and it would not be pleasant.

Owies :(: 1d8 ⇒ 4

Dario bit his lip as the wound ripped more, fresh red spilling down over the burns from the tender flesh. He gave a sharp look towards Lisitsei before a shuddered breath escaped him.

"I-I think I'll be fine. Thank you though." The gunslinger muttered, sitting up and chewing his lip like an old piece of jerky.

This appears to be the rule for Crit Fails, btw:

"The rules for critical failure—sometimes called a fumble—are the same as those for a critical success, but in the other direction: if you fail a check by 10 or more, that's a critical failure."

So, that's a crit fail on track only if the Track DC is 17 or higher.

The afternoon wore on, as the party saw to their individual preparations. Ammunition, weapons, and tools were purchased, and Lisitsei saw to administering a bit of medical treatment to folks injured the the fight with the mephits.

Joran and Lisi took a bit of time searching the perimeter of town for any sign of the arsonist, but it would seem the big-headed ugly goblin managed not to leave an obvious sign of his or her passing.

At last, the troupe of eight, brought together by strange circumstance and a shared desire to help, had assembled near the town hall. Most of the townsfolk had returned home at this point. A group of individuals from the carpenter's guild, including Yasami's contact Meebo, had come out to perform an inspection on the burnt section of the building and were taking notes and measurements to prepare for repairs.

Greta saw the group of adventurers preparing to leave and asked the artisans to wait a moment, walking over with Warbal in tow.

"Some of you I've known for years. Some for less. Others I only met today," Greta began. "A very bad situation was made right because you were decisive, calm, and courageous. I hope those qualities see you back to us safely. May Desna guide your steps." She bowed her head with respect.

Warbal took off her hat and scratched her bald head nervously. "Warbal is hoping you can be saving her Bumblebrashers. They are being good goblins, but can sometimes be untrusting. Be taking this, and showing it, in cases of doubting." She held out her scholarly cap.

As the group of you turned to leave, a voice called out, "Hey! Joran!"

Trinil jogged up to him. "I heard what you did in there..." She smiled, stood on tiptoe, and kissed his cheek. Looking suddenly embarassed as she noted the rest of the group, she added, "Be safe, oaf." She winked and turned, jogging back to her tavern, though she sent another smile over her shoulder in his direction.

Citadel Altaerein was about a mile northeast of town. The road north out of town still had a signpost pointing out where the trail to the citadel branched off, though the paint had faded from the wood. At one time, the trail had been wide enough for a cart, and the wheel ruts of decades of traffic were still there, though grass had now reclaimed the hard-packed dirt, and branches frequently reached across the path.

Just out of sight of the road, along the trail, Cevendyll was the first to spot something odd on the ground up ahead. It looked like a dead animal from this distance, fleshy, but small...

Joran - for probably the first time in his life - finds himself unable to speak. He tries to speak, tries to come up with something that's 'Joran-like' - which is, as far as he's concerned, clever and awesome - but for some reason... can't. As his heart races, he mindlessly reaches up and touches the lucky cheek, smiling magnificently. As he watches her fade into the distance, he finally returns to reality. Nonchalantly cutting his eyes toward the others and noticing the stares, he quickly shoots his hand down, clears his throat and adjusts his armor. "Ummmm, okay!" he claps. "Wait... where were we? Oh yeah! That's right. Hat. Citadel. Let's move people! We're burning daylight here," he says, running a hand through his hair as he leads the way out while pondering these weird feelings. Really Joran? Nothing? I can't believe I just went blank. What is my problem? I just don't get it.

"Er...if someone can check that this isn't in a snare, I'll have a look..."

Once someone more trap-wise than Lisi makes sure he isn't stumbling into a trap, he checks the animal to see what it is and what killed it.

"A dead animal? That's nothing new. How it died might be interesting though. Especially if whatever killed it is nearby," he warns, looking around and checking for the possibility of a trap.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

Caiten stops when he hears Cevendyll call out, but doesn't leave the trail. "If it was a snare, wouldn't it have already been sprung by the woodland creature?"

Not particularly interested in the passing away of a typical forest animal, Caiten keeps his attention on the trail and the woods surrounding it.

"That's a good point." Caiten noticeably increases his frequency of looking into the woods around the area. "So do you suppose would it be there to trap a larger animal, or something more intelligent."

Rubbing his chin in thought, "Good question. And I have no idea. Could go either way honestly. Or heck! maybe both. But don't you worry, buddy, if there's anything to this, we are going to find it out," he grins confidently, giving a nod.

With everyone keeping a wary eye out and discussing the finer points of snare-laying, Lisi cautiously approached the fleshy mass.

Lisi:
For a moment, Lisi's mind can't wrap around what he's looking at. The skin was flabby, a gray green, and seemed empty, as if the creature deflated. Repulsed a bit, not wishing to touch it, Lisi grabbed a stick from the ground nearby to poke at it. Then it suddenly clicked for him...

Lisitsei used a stick to impale the mass and hold it up for all to see, and see everyone did.

It was a mask. A fairly realistic one, made from what seemed to be rubberized tree sap, sculpted to resemble a goblin's head. It was a decent facsimile, albeit a touch too big.

"...what can impersonate a goblin? Many things, I suppose. Does anyone have a good enough sense of smell to know what wore this?"

Lisi stuffs it in his pack. "This is evidence of foul play. We'll keep it for later." He ticks off ideas with his fingers. "Halflings. Mites. Any number of small fey. Apologies, Guba and Sulee, but familiars and homunculi come to mind as well. But fey would use a glamour or other magic..." He shakes his head. "Let's keep moving. Narrowing his eyes, "A mask, huh?" Crossing his arms, he rubs his chin in thought. After a few moments, he finally breaks free from his contemplation. "Yeah, let's keep moving. I'm fairly certain I know who's behind this. What I don't understand is 'why'." Joran then continues onward.

Dario waited at the town hall for the others, nursing his injured shoulder but otherwise ready for the travel ahead. The seven others assembled nearby and he rose from the post where he had been sitting, slinging his coat over his shoulder before cracking them all a smile. Greta approached the assembled group and addressed them all, thanking them for their actions and wishing them blessings from Desna. Dario carefully listened between them all before shouldering his backpack, almost making his way out of the town before he heard the young girl make her way out towards the massive man. Trinil gave the big, loveable oaf a quick peck on the cheek and there was a moment of silence between them all. A few seconds later, a low whistle escaped his lips as he gave Joran a wink before making his way towards the town exit.

"Seems that one is a lost opportunity. Oh well." Dario thought to himself as he fell in step with the odd assortment of heroes that began their trip towards Citadel Altaerein. Grass had begun to overgrow the track and the trail was beginning to disappear it seemed. He had moved towards the middle of the group, his hand casually moving closer towards the grip of his postol when they called out that they had found something up ahead. When the mask is revealed, there is a quiet sense of enjoyment at the fact he had been right. It was supposed to be a sabotage of the relations between the town and the tribe, it seemed.

"Fairly certain who? Forgive me, not all of us are locals Joran. What're thinking?" Dario asks, moving up a little closer to stand beside the impressive man.

Caiten looks critically at Dario for a few seconds. "Lisi, if you have any more of those berries it would be prudent to give one to Dario before we reach the citadel."

Refocus can be combined with other exploration activities. A Druid walking down a forest trail would 100% count.
