There is a blank look on Dario's face when Cev mentions just using magic to clean the place up, blinking a few times as he processes it.

"There is magic that will just let you...clean things? With a word and a wave of the arms?" Dario asks incredulously before shaking his head. "Would've made cleaning the forges a lot easier."

Cevendyl smiles and laughs with the gunslinger

"I am having second thoughts on this pet situation. My question is - If - and it's a big IF - we take these creatures with us, assuming the mother does not show up while we are here. And then she comes back, and smells human, the first thing she will likely do if run down to Breachill and kill whoever crosses her path. I mean probably. Do you want to have that on your hands?", Yasamina expresses her concerns.

"I'm not a mother, but if I were, and my children disappeared, I would search high and low to find whoever did that, and I would not be nice."

She looks at the pups. "Additionally, nobody bothered to ask these pups whether they are okay with it. But I doubt they are."

Sulee watches Cevendyll casting Prestidigitation. "Caiten, I keep telling you that you really need to learn that spell."

Rocco and Shadow listen attentively as Lisi speaks. Rocco spins in a little circle a few times, suddenly caught up in a burst of zoomies. "Rocco is good kids!" she declares loudly and proudly.

Shadow, having shown herself to be the more thoughtful of the two sisters, takes in the information and meets Lisi's gaze unflinchingly. She bares her teeth, clearly attempting to "smile". Deciding it feels unnatural, she instead lets her mouth hang agape, tongue lolling out to one side, in a much more puppy style smile. "Walk with you. Safe!" They seem oblivious to the debate over the morality of taking them, but seem happy enough with their new friends, the "nice prey," and have both seemed much more nervous when speaking of their Mamma.

Joran peers into the room with the broken door. It has the look of a waiting room. Lots of seats, mostly broken. Once-plush curtains are hanging in tatters on the walls, and scuffs in a few places reveal where portraits once hung. Trash and rotted food lie in heaps on the floor, growing mold and attracting insects. There seems to be little of note in here.

Caiten, being thorough, casts Detect Magic in both the clerk/latrine room and the waiting room.

Afterwards he turns to Joran. "Well, we have reduced the number of doors from fifty down to two. Three if we consider backtracking to the southern wing of the citadel. But since we are already here, that seems like a less optimal choice. I will assist you in checking this door behind Rocco's and Shadow's bedding for danger."

Caiten:
While nothing glows magically in either room, your keen optical sensors do detect something of passing interest in the office. Tucked into the back of a desk drawer, there is a book. It appears to be a treatise on Order of the Nail protocols as they relate to Chelish and Isgeri laws, and explanations of various interpretations of them as they apply to past cases against local criminals.

While all that is rather dry, even for you, there is a handwritten personalized dedication at the front that reads, "To Lictor Acillmar, with thanks for your interest in my work. Together we shall quell savagery. -- Hellknight T. Stagram, Esq." You file the names away as possible persons of note from before the citadel was abandoned.

Caiten flips through the book and files away the names without comment. Then noting that it is a law book, takes it to Lisitsei for his opinion on it. "Lisitsei, I found an old law book if you are interested in it. Though you may want to use a cleaning spell on it."

"Won't you miss your mother?", Yasamina asks the pups. "She will be sad, if she comes back and you are not here."

The pups look up at Yasami, tails wagging. "What sad?" Shadow asked. "Momma says 'Eat sister and prove strongest, or I'll eat both!'" Rocco declares. She pounces on Shadow and they playfully scuffle for a moment before coming to a draw, both seeming unconcerned about their mother's words.

"Actually, I am not aware of a good place to rest for the night in this citadel. Currently the best room that I am aware of is that small round room in the hallway with the collapsed interior wall. But it would be a bit cramped with all of us in it. If we wanted to, we could go back to Breachill for the night. "My concern with returning to Breachill would be what Yasami brought up. If the mother of these pups catches our scent and follows us there, the townsfolk would be put at risk. It may be safer to simply put up with the cramping and sleep here."

The door appears safe, and Caiten pushes through.

Although many of the circular tables and heavy wooden writing desks in this room are tipped over or otherwise ransacked, the bookshelves against the wall and the nature of furniture suggest this was once a room where significant legal research took place. There is no sign of anything alive.

Seeing ABSOLUTELY nothing of interest, "Welp, looks like I was right. Bor-ing." He then makes his way near the two doors. "Gonna need the light, poppet buddy, if you would please!" he calls out. Looking from one door to the next and back again, Joran finally decides on which door. "Okay, I'm going to open both of them. Then we can decide which way we want to go. Fire in the hole!" he warns, opening the door to the north and peering inside. Barring getting blown up and nothing jumping out at him, he will then move to the western door and open it as well.

Going for two on this one. Open the northern(I keep wanting to say: "To my right") door first. If there's a bad guy behind it, he will NOT proceed to open the western door. He will wait until the bad guy has been dealt with and then he will open the western door. And opening either door would obviously require neither of them being locked. Trapped is no biggie, I can just set those off like a dummy. :P

Oren has something of a difficult time keeping track while Cevendyll is speaking. He gives Yasami a side-eye that says Do you get what the hell he's going on about?

Regardless, it seems like Dario got the gist of what Cevendyll was saying, which makes things easier on Oren. "Like Dario said. Can we kill the beast? Certainly. The question is whether we could kill the beast before it takes the lives of innocents, which is something I do not want to risk. Like Dario, I know virtually nothing about casters, but if you need rest to regain your spells and Lisitsei needs rest in order to recover from what ails him, I don't think that the Bumblebrashers would die if we barricaded ourselves in a room and rested for the night."

He finishes talking right as Joran is stopped from bursting through another door. "Yes, perhaps it would not be terrible to have a second pair of eyes take a look before you move through a door."

Yasamina moves to Joren to back him up in case of trouble.

When things calm down, she looks around the library / study / whatever you want to call this room.

"Lots of space, two doors, if you guys need to rest a bit, we can do it here - keeping watch two people at a time, stationed near the closed doors, in case something wants to get inside. And the rest can chill on the floor here. Or on the tables, I won't judge. Hell, we even have these HUGE bookshelves to barge the entrances."

She pauses, and looks at the pups. "If the wolfmother comes in, she will smell her young here, and we can -",and clears her throat, "take care of that situation."

"If it's the mess that is the issue, we can clean it up. With some effort, good old shovels and sweeping, and perhaps a little aid from our magically adept friends to take care of the smell."

With the talk of getting ready to settle down for the night becoming more prominent, Dario finds a relatively uncluttered corner to open up his backpack and unfurl a well-worn, well-loved, bedroll. Setting up the little things he can with an experienced quickness, he looks to the others.

"We won't make this into a new, competitive inn with the town but we can make it habitable. Keep the door we came through open so a lighting a fire won't smoke us out, barricade the ones we haven't gone through yet." While a fire would normally point them out to the enemy, Dario thought the risk was better than fighting in a room in the dark. Magic was handy but not if you were on watch and someone was slitting your throat. Add in the fact that the pistol had surely announced their arrival and it seemed like it'd be worth dealing with.

"Does anyone by chance have a good quality silver bell? I found a scroll of Alarm that would help us with keeping watch, but according to the instructions on it, it requires a bell as a focus. I don't happen to have one. As for a fire, Dario, are you wanting that for heat? Between Cevendyll and I we can keep magical light going for as long as needed, but it won't provide any heat."

Dario thinks for a few moments, before giving a shrug. "If the light lasts even if you're asleep, that's great. Warmed rations taste a bit better than cold ones and it keeps the chill out of the air some, especially since it feels like its getting colder up here."

Dario takes his time inspecting the western door. It has a latch, but is unlocked. It sounds quiet on the other side.

"Girls, do you know what is on the other side of this door? Can you hear them or smell them? We know you are both fierce hunters, so I thought I would ask for your help. If there's Bad Prey in there, we should hunt it ... as a family."

Shadow and Rocco started sniffing around as soon as you entered the current room, seemingly unfamiliar with it. Rocco sprays one corner to mark it as her territory. At Cev's request, Shadow starts sniffing at the north door excitedly, digging a paw underneath. Disturbingly, a large ratlike foot pokes back from the other side, feeling around and putting a fresh set of scratches on the bottom of the door. Shadow, thinking it a fun game, attacks the foot and scores a bite. A loud, unhappy squeak sounds through the door and the foot disappears. Shadow looks proud of herself.

Rocco makes it over to the western door and sniffs, then sneezes. "Smells weird."

Cev looks at the scroll but the details of the spell elude him, just on the edge of his understanding. (the DC is 15 for 1st level spells --and I think you need the focus to cast the spell either way, though you are correct you can set a mental alarm.)

"Rats. Lovely." Yasamina sighs, puts down her backpack. She pulls out her bedroll, and then something else. The item start ringing with a metallic sound as she pulls out a belt of chimes. "These are brass, I believe. Will that help?"

Standard issue belly dancer chimes. Part of the clothing. Technically I did not pay 3 gp for it, but I will let Fern be the judge in regards to the efficacy.

She shakes them again - just a bit - and offers the belt to to Caiten.

"What if the rats enter the place? They are resourceful little buggers. I'm honestly surprised they did not claw their way through this door at this point. Or found other means of entry."

Oren tosses his maul from one hand to the other in response to Yasami's question. "Well, I don't work as an exterminator, but this should prove effective as pest control. Although a squished rat won't do any wonders in making this a more pleasant place to sleep."

Just as Joran reaches for the door he stops midway and ponders the gunslinger's words. Nodding in COMPLETE understanding, "You know, that's a very good point you've made there, friend, a very good point. I am way to handsome to have my face melted off. Okay, you go ahead. Thanks, buddy!" he gives him a slap on the shoulder.

That is unacceptable," he says, extending both arms in front of him and giving a quick, sweeping motion outward. "No way. I mean, what would Trinil think?!" he exclaims mindlessly before realizing not a half a second later what he just said. Working furiously to recover, "I mean! Wait a minute now," he holds up a finger, "What I meant was, 'the ladies'," he nods confidently, internally studying - or more likely hoping - Oren countenance to see if he's buying it. "Yeah that's what I meant; what would the ladies think. Ol' Joran can't have his face melting off. No sir," he pats himself on the cheek while smirking. What was THAT about?! Get it together, Joran, or people or gonna start talking. We cannot have that. Wait... did I just say 'we'? Oh man I'm starting to think I may just need that rest.

Looking to the others, the barbarian can't help but notice they all appear they could use some rest as well, especially the poor druid. Swallowing his pride, "As much as I hate to stop - especially with those rats next door, I really want to kill those things - I can't argue the fact it would do us all some good. Especially our good buddy Lisi. And I like your watch setup, Dario, I think those are fine pairings; and this room is perfect. Hey, it could be worse, could be the dung room," he concludes, grinning.

"Yes, much more palatable than the cramped room in the hallway or the oversized chamber pot chamber. However, let me see about getting some better security for these doors. Those rats make me nervous as well."

Caiten pulls out his tools and begins disassembling one of the bookshelves. He creates a plug strip that fits under the door so that rat hands can't fit through it any more and some bracing bars and wedges to hold the doors closed.

The North and West doors now have form-fitting skirting. The West door that we came through has a mechanism allowing it to be opened from this side with minimal effort while still being able to be securely closed.

"That should do for tonight."

"I am glad you concur there Joran. Can't keep all the ladies waiting only to come back without a nose, right? That Trinil girl seems like a keeper though, might not mind the loss of a nose..." Dario murmurs on a bit, his back to Joran to keep the man from seeing the big grin on his face. Young love was adorable and humans were so bad at it. Scheduling in the Hold left limited time to courtship and while there were certainly pretty dwarves, none of them were in his part of the forge. A terrible shame.

Moving over towards Yasami, the gunslinger would help set up her own little encampment if she needed it before he talked. As much as he had mentally teased the big man over his developing crush, he also found himself a tiny bit flabbergasted around the dangerous dancer. The woman had quite literally been bitten into after leaping into danger and then sewed her own injuries without even taking a swill of ale. He could almost feel the entire weight of Clan Zuz staring at him from across the world as he cleared his throat.

"You alright being on watch with me tonight? That bite was something fierce...not that you didn't handle it well, of course. You fight like a sandstorm back in the wastes..." His smile, even with his cracked face, was sincere even as he mentally chided himself mentally. "A sandstorm? You called her a sandstorm? Out of every natural phenomenon, you decided the one where dirt gets in all your bits as the one that fits her the best? Dario, you idiot."
