"Hello, my friends. Good to meet you! My name is Zaidel, and I'll be your 'horny-satyr/cleric/dungeon bartender' for those lucky few who will be joining Aeria Gloris, our adventuring party in GM Wolf's Arcanium campaign."

I have been asked by GM Wolf to help answer any question applicants might have about this campaign, character creation, etc. I'd like to share a few things I've noticed about this campaign you should be aware of.

1) This is an adult game. Adult themes like sex, sex work, and polyamorous relationships have already been explored. One of the NPC was a sex worker for a few years in order to survive. Drug use has not been explored, but talk of hallucinogenic mushrooms have been discussed, but not to any resolution.

2) The Gods are listening. It has been established in Arcanium that unlike other campaigns, The Gods pay more attention to heroes, and might be so inclined to offer their assistance, or hinder you. Cursing at a subterranean altar might make your presence known to the Elder God that altar is dedicated to, so mind your manners. The opposite is also true. You may meet and possibly befriend a deity or his followers. It's up to you and your actions.

And I've played in several of GM Wolf's other campaigns, so I will say this: 3) You get what you put into it! If you are going to make a one or two sentence response to things going on, you'll get a one or two sentence experience. But if you work hard to make a connection to this campaign, the campaign will open up for you and come alive on the screen! I like GM Wolf's campaigns because he'll often work with you to give you an enjoyable gaming and RP experience.

Lastly 4) When making your backstory, put as much detail in as possible. It could mean the difference from a +1 to Wis to a +2.

"That's it for now, my fellow forum junkies! IRL, it's my 49th birthday! But I'll be on the forum, because I really can't afford one of those expensive 'mid-life crises'."

[ you could even mention birth & rebirth as campaign themes if you wanted ;) ]

Yes that is true about birth and rebirth. Though with our new revelation and exploration of what is a 'Chosen', you don't have to go through the death and resurrection if you don't want to. You could just be an adventurer from the world and bump into us awakening your 'Chosen' abilities.

Jacen I hope to see you more, will you be joining us?

About me:

My name is Stratton, I am a 53 year old cis white male.

I grew up in Vermont and upstate New York. I grew up hiking and fishing, swinging from vines, building snow forts, and generally getting told to go outside. I learned to swim, sew, cook, clean, dig for treasure in the local junkyard, shoot a rifle, hunt squirrels, and all sort of other adventurous youth activities.

Somewhere around 11 years old, I discovered the existence of Dungeons and Dragons as a concept, and immediately set to creating my own version of it with a pinochle deck, some ideas stolen from my favorite cartoons and movies (Star Wars, Thundarr the Barbarian) and a Batman's Rogue gallery, called Imperials and Rebels. It was terrible, but fun.

Once I was able to get ahold of the real thing, it became my primary hobby, even going so far as to walk over a mountain to run it for my friend in the next town every couple of weeks. When I was 15 my family walked the state of New York from the town of Maine to Niagra Falls in an almost month-long hike.

In middle school, I played Villains and Vigilantes where you got to play superheroes based on yourself. In high school, I played a game called Ancient Future where you got to do the same thing, but as dimension-hopping people who got to visit all our favorite game, comic, and fiction worlds. I know the appeal of these kind of games well :)

In college, I studied English Literature and Philosophy, and graduated with a double major Bachelor's degree in those subjects. So, naturally, I immediately got sucked into the world of Retail and spent the next 20ish years there instead of doing anything with said degree.

I met my wife when she came with my younger brother to my college graduation, and it was love at first foot-rub, although it took awhile to convince her of that.

We've had one daughter, who turned out pretty well, too. She's currently living with her cousins and also not using her degree (she studied for visual arts and briefly worked for Stereo D on such movies as Guardians of the Galaxy, San Andreas, and some others in that time frame- but her company moved to Canada and she decided she'd rather help animals, to which I say I'm glad she's happy with what she's doing, way better than what I did for all that time.)

About 5 years ago, I left retail for banking. In that time, I've got 4 or so promotions but I refuse to do any kind of management, especially salaried management. During Covid, I was asked and accepted a position where I help people over the phone a few days a week in addition to my normal duties. I find it different and fun, and this came as a complete surprise to me since I normally hate talking on the phone (idle chatter bores me to tears.)

I've face my fair share of strife over my lifetime; it hasn't been all good. I was molested as a child by a "friend of the family", only later finding out that all my older siblings (2 brothers 2 sisters) had also been molested by this same "friend". My second oldest brother used to beat me up fairly frequently. That same brother was shot in the back of the head about 6 years ago in a friend's garage/ I've been dealing with diabetes poorly for over a decade, and it has cost me a number of regular body functions-- including taking a toll on my eyes, although now I see better than I have since my teens thanks to the internal lenses after cataract surgery. And, most recently, they just found a left bundle branch block, 37%^ EF and 80% blockage in my LAD (which they fixed with a stent).

Despite all that, I would say I'm very fortunate. I live my life with gratitude, most especially for my wife and our life together.

Before making a wish, I need to know if things like Diabetes, obesity, and nearsightedness follow us to this new life, and approximately how "old" the new bodies are.

EDIT: Just saw this:

Yes I am changed the or to and. So everyone will roll 3d6 seven times and then with your IRL background you will gain some additional bonuses.

Diabetes and most ailments are removed with the transition! Obesity, nearsightedness would follow you into the world. You come to the world mostly with your previous body.

There are many remedies for such things in this new world. As you join us you will find many of the perks. We also have a daily quest which should make you fit!

Is the recruitment still open?

I may as well go with my nearest death experience so far, that was about 15 years ago though.

background:

Young guy just out of the German army dies to knife wounds trying to stop and armed robbery. Parents and family distraught, funeral in a week.

What do I have?
Normal clothes
Keyband
early 2000s mobile phone
Knife inserted in my upper left leg, this time it unfortunately hit the artery, or I was stupid enough to rip it outmyself, rather then waiting for emergency doctors.

Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 4) = 8
Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 4) = 12

Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 1) = 11
Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 4) = 10
Stats: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 6) = 17

Current stat spread (slightly flattering, but I rolled high)
I could also be the one guy with reasonable physical stats.
I did a rather unexpectional martial arts as a sidejob career after recovering from that stabwound, but I couldnt really compete with people that started training earlier, STR 17 would definitly be pushing it for me though.

STR=14
Dex=10
Con=12

Recruitment is still open. Please elaborate more on your backstory, unless you are fine with the ability scores you rolled.

Background assuming I died in 2003, acutally nearly 20 years ago:

pooof.
where the heck am I?
I was in a room. There was a horned thing in front of me that spoke...
Please elaborate more on your Curiculum vitae, I am Zaidel, your friendly Satyr. It spoke
Who the f&@! would use a Satyr for a bookkeeping position, look, I read the Ilias when I was 7 because my parents didnt, and thus werent aware it was full of boobs, I know my greek mythology! I answered, trying to take stock of my situation.
Would you kindly refrain from making assumption about an entire race based on repeatedly rewritten 2000 or more year old data?
The horned thing answered.
Look, I am 20 years old, born in Russia, moved to Germany when I was a Baby, was always "the Russian" in school getting into an appropriate amount of fights, and once got suspended for organizing a Vodka drinking contest in 8th grade, spoiler, I won because I ate properly in anticipation and the Fritzes didnt, our main teacher also said that she was personally disappointed on account of the cheap quality of the Vodka used, but look I was a teenager and not made of money.
Other then the Vodka contest, my greatest academic achievment in school was successfully arguing that Stalins offer to unite and neutralize Germany in the early cold war era was probably genuine, during my final oral exam. I do know my military history.
I finished the German school system, got drafted into the German army, where I surprisingly enough didnt get into any fights on account of my Russianness, even more suprisingly was popular because I could fix things, then the 9 month were over, I lost 7 IQ points but gained about 10kg worth of muscles, artillery shells are kind of heavy.
Not the worst trade.
I then proceeded to party pretty hard and...
s$~@ I got stabbed on the way back from a party because I wanted to help that guy getting robbed.
Scheisse-Blyad, am I dead?
It hit me.

Just private first class, did my normal conscript duty.
We had literally zero hand to hand training, when we inquired the response was "You are f*%!ing tank artillery, if you do hand to hand, s*+~ has gone completely pear shaped, and if I train 100 guys in hand to hand at least 10 of them will get injured, one of them severely so I wont".

military stuff:

I was trained in all positions on the howitzer other then driving it, including being second in command (mostly because the gunner has the least to do, and is closest to the commander so he can overhear him on whats going on). My main job was gunner, but everyone had to be capable of replacing everyone else.
I was the only one who could do triginometrie (when you calculate the firing solution in your head) while a seargent was shouting in my ear.

The shells were rather heavy at 40+kg so thats where some muscles came from. Luckily, we did not have to load them manually under normal conditions.

We did all have basic infantry training, also known as "can maybe walk for 5 meters without boinking himself in the head with a handgrenade" training by the actual infantry, that would probably be some survival. Like, I can typically figure out where north is, read a map, and like, not instantly die if exposed to wilderness for a couple of days, guessing distances etc. Could also be perception, I did sense 3 out of 25 infantry per school graduates when we had to go through a forest with them hiding, which was really high and 3 more then most.

We had some exercizes, including with the Americans as opfor and performed quite ok. We were supposed to by "Totally not Russia", and I did speak Russian. One part was "free play". I spent that part in a shack, talking with another half russian in another shack, via unsecured basic mobile phones we assumed the Americans to be listening in, and we basically pretended to be the op for commanders. It turned out the Americans werent actually listening in, and/or didnt have anyone on board who spoke Russian, so I was quite happy about having the easiest job in the exercize haha.

I did propose that I buy a couple of hundred hamburgers, get to the Americans in civilian clothing, pretend to be a delivery driver and ask "ok, who here ordered 200 hamburgers", in order to conduct some reconaissance, but that plan was waylaid by me not having a driving licence. That probably indicates a chaotic alignment.
Oh, pragmatic activator trait would fit me relatively well.

Okay, I've got a concept for you- but I'd like to get some feedback on a Special Ability/Wish idea that would impact a lot of other decisions of what to do with the character mechanically.

"This...thing... we've been shanghai'd into is fascinating. I don't only mean the obvious and incredibly disturbing stuff, like the agent that brought us here being able to read the minds of people from different universes and seamlessly transfer them after death into utterly different bodies with added skills and supernatural powers. I mean the fine details of exactly what we've been made into, the specific nature of the abilities we've been given. I was almost starting to entertain the 'spontaneous travel to a parallel universe' idea, but on second examination it's a ludicrous explanation for this place in particular. Proper, naturally-occurring many-worlds-interpretation-of-quantum-mechanics parallel universes don't look like this. Most of them are going to be, uh. Boring? No, that's not the world. They'll be...natural consequences of their point of divergence. Lots of dull, sterile parallels where the initial conditions of the Big Bang resulted in a starless, planetless Universe fundamentally inhospitable to life. Parallels where Dewey beat Truman. Parallels where the Chicxulub impact never happened and dinosaurs rule the Earth. Buffy's World Without Shrimp.

But there's no conceivable point of divergence for this. Pop-culturally recognizable dwarves and elves, right next to each other and cohabiting with a wide array of other fantastical creatures, are a post-Tolkien thing. Really, a post-Gygax thing. Good luck finding a route from 1950 to what we're looking at, let alone 1970. Nothing that couldn't just as well explain any observation.

I suppose it's an enormous point in favor of Zhuangzi and Descartes' bigger, meaner, more modern, disturbingly plausible older brother: the simulation hypothesis. I'm a high-resolution computer simulation of a human being, being run by some future civilization that has read Tolkien.

Either that, or...what? What's left? Heinleinian pantheistic multiple solipsism? All Stories Are True, and Lazarus Long gallivants about the multiverse visiting the Land of Oz and John Carter of Mars and the First Lensman of Earth? At this point, I wouldn't rule it out.

What's worse, we're not just fantasy characters. We are, recognizably, adventurers. Healing potions, alignments...studded leather armor, for God's sake, the same misinterpretation of period illustrations of brigandine that people mocked Gygax for thirty years ago.

...I mean, none of this is set in stone. It's not as if I'm working with some kind of manual for literary criticism of the laws of physics of a different universe. But there are things that I can say with certainty. This is an artificial system, a made thing. Though its power is incomprehensible and inhuman, the mind or minds that designed it are *not.* Its maker or makers are, in important ways, human, not aliens or mind-shattering Lovecraftian deities. I would even be willing to lay money on them being culturally Western humans with strong influence from a history of fantasy fiction and RPG design similar to ours up until the 1980s, though there's a possibility that they did extensive research on our world's nerd culture and generated the entire edifice procedurally.

What does all this mean, in practical terms? Hell if I know, but it's certainly going to keep me up at night.

One thing it definitely does not mean is that this place is fake, we're fake, therefore nothing matters and it's time to descend into nihilism. If I'm a sufficiently high-resolution simulation of a human being to worry about all this shinola, then I have the moral status of a human being.

...I'll also bleed like a human being, and need food and shelter like a human being. Right! Back to practical problems."

Daniel Landvik

Attributes:
Strength: 14

Daniel is a six-footer and dedicated amateur athlete- a kickboxer, grappler and mixed martial artist who engages in occasional strength training to supplement what martial-arts training has done for his physique.

Constitution: 12

Bicycling, running, watching what he eats- Daniel borders on being a fitness freak. But this didn't come from nowhere- an asthmatic and insomniac with allergies, a sensitive stomach, and a few other health issues, he pays close attention to his health because he has to. With any luck, magical medicine will be kinder to him than mundane medicine has.

Dexterity: 14
His active lifestyle has made him reasonably agile, flexible and fast.

Intelligence: 18
Employed as a research chemist prior to his untimely death, Daniel is a voracious reader with an endless, lifelong enthusiasm for learning, Beyond his profession, Daniel's interests include military strategy, tactics, logistics and history, medicine in general and psychiatry in particular, law, economics, epistemology and the philosophy of mind, politics and political philosophy, hopology and the history of martial arts, science fiction and fantasy of all sorts, the history of science and technology...

Wisdom: 10

Charisma: 10

Daniel's intellectual strengths are, in many ways, his weaknesses: problems others tend to solve through intuition, common sense, or warmth of personality are problems he generally approaches with formal knowledge and careful method. The nearsightedness doesn't help, either: he'd better take good care of his one pair of glasses.

Special Ability/Wish/Class:

"...okay, here's a curveball for you: Make me an Outside Context Problem I want an ability that's not necessarily the most powerful, the most flexible, the most dangerous or the sexiest or the flashiest: give me something that breaks rules, that people wherever I'm going will be caught flat-footed by because they've never seen or heard anything like it."

(Class left undetermined because the way you grant the request may give me something unusual as far as class goes, either gestalted with my standard class or standalone. Common 3rd party would work just fine, so long as I was the only one in that world- a Spherecaster, a DSP-style martial initiator or psionics user, a Radiance House Pactmaker- or out-there homebrew like a Mythos class, something from oslecamo's Touhou Battle Grimoire or a Xenoalchemist or something.

In the absence of something class-changing in my Special Ability/Wish, I'm probably going to go Alchemist (Vivisectionist, Toxicant, Gun Chemist).

Whoops- the archetype-stacking checker I was using was counting 'Bomb' and 'Bombs' as a separate class feature, but of course Vivisectionist and Gun Chemist can't stack. Probably just one or the other, then.

I would prefer Vivisectionist over Gun Chemist.

Now see you are asking for me to give you an ability but it doesn't work that way. You need to come up with something, then we can adjust it.

Mainly I was phrasing it in such broad terms because I'd like my ability to be something third-party or homebrew, but I knew different people are familiar and comfortable with different kinds of homebrew to different degrees, and wanted to sound you out to see which broad categories of thing you'd be most comfortable with before I settled on something that you knew you definitely wouldn't grant. Some more specific options:

Special Ability/Class Focus: 'Engineering knowledge from the world I left behind.' Mechanical outcome: Access to the Blacksmith or Technician Spheres of Might classes, focused on smithing improved 'conventional' weapons, explosives and chemicals via the Alchemy sphere if you're not terribly comfortable with guns in your fantasy.
Wish powerup of the above: 'The spark of genius- perhaps madness- that makes a technician into a legendary inventor.' Full gestalt with either of the above.

Special Ability/Class Focus: 'Esoteric knowledge of substances and materials in this strange place.' Mechanical outcome: Access to the Polymath or Occult Chymist third-party Alchemist archetype, granting access to poison-themed Tome of Battle-style martial maneuvers or an equivalent to 3.5 Binder powers.
Wish powerup of above '...and let me change 'em around as easily as breathing: take grape juice, shake, heat, cool, pour out fine wine. Take dragon's blood, dry and boil, concentrate to a crystal with all that power in it...' Full gestalt with a Path of War martial manifester class or Pactmaker class, taking fuller advantage of the mechanics those archetypes dip into.

Special Ability/Class Focus: 'Weather magic!' Outcome: Permit me a Spherecasting archetype, possibly Sphere Alchemist, or class, and give me access to the Weather sphere.
Wish powerup: full gestalt with a spherecasting

Special Ability/Class Focus: 'Secrets of life and death!' Outcome: permits investment into the Death sphere, or access to 3.5 Dread Necromancer.
Wish powerup: Gestalt with the above

Special Ability/Class Focus: 'Flexibility!' Outcome: Access to the Prodigy Spheres class, permitting shallow-but-very-versatile dips into bits of the Spheres of Might and Power subsystem- or Voltaic, permitting the same with Path of War disciplines, or 3.5 Spell to Power Erudite, permitting the same with 3.5 psionics/DSP psionics/Vancian spellcasting
Wish powerup: 'I'm going to be like a kid in a candy store seeing ninjas and knights and wizards and dragons- I want to be able to pick up a profession on a dime!' (Full gestalt with any of the above)

Special Ability/Class Focus: 'Freaky biology magic!' Outcome: permits access to the Alteration sphere, or the Xenoalchemist class, or a Psychometabolism-focused DSP-style Psion.

Special Ability/Class Focus: 'Supernatural martial arts!' Outcome: access to a Path of War martial-initiating class or archetype with access to Elemental Flux, Riven Hourglass, Shattered Mirror, Sleeping Goddess or Veiled Moon...

Can you give me some hot-or-cold on that so I can get a feeling for which of those options you'd be most enthusiastic about?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

For what it's worth, Path of War classes have already been approved for the campaign without it being a special ability or wish (for example my character is a gestalt warder(bushi)/unchained rogue (hidden blade).

I don't know how the GM feels about Spheres of Power, but PoW seems pre-approved.

EDIT: the gestalt was the result of a wish (someone else's) and it's access is a benefit of joining the group proper; you could likely use your wish for a gestalt without joining the group if history is to judge.

Interesting. Scratch the last one, and the Polymath request, then- unless maybe I can spend a Wish on a 'world edit' wherein everyone's ignorant of a given martial discipline. (Sue me: I want to be a special snowflake, it's part of the isekai power fantasy.)

Voltaic isn't DSP, though, it's a publishing house that shares staff with them, and it occupies some interesting and unorthodox design space. I'd still take that.

Special Ability/Class Focus: 'Weather magic!' Outcome: Permit...

Well my first question would be what ability do you want? Most of those sound very interesting. Polymath and occult chymist seem the most alien to me and I would prefer not needing to do much homework, especially with my very limited time.

Interesting. Scratch the last one, and the Polymath request, then- unless maybe I can spend a Wish on a 'world edit' wherein everyone's ignorant of a given martial discipline. (Sue me: I want to be a special snowflake, it's part of the isekai power fantasy.)

I totally get that! Yes you could wish for god like powers to have an ability to edit the world. But you were thinking of making a new martial discipline? Maybe instead of remaking the wheel making it so you have no limitations on manevers and stances, giving you access to them all.

The first mad-science-and-guns option, or ther fifth crazy-flexibility option, would be my personally preferred pick.

...and, come to think of it, Voltaic/Prodigy gestalt, combining two of the options I presented in 'Flexibility!', would be my single most preferred choice if you permit me to stretch a bit more.

Okay go with the Voltaic/Prodigy gestalt. When you are ready you can jump into gameplay or interact with a goddess in discussion.

Totally not even here, just peeping options...

We currently have three players, I believe we are adding Bluedove as our fourth. I will double check with our current players but we have always welcomed other players before.

MORE PLAYERS! As long as they engage in the game, I'm fine with new players!!!

Man, I really miss this game a lot! Was a ton of fun, even though I was only in it for a short while. No hard feelings towards Wolf or any of the other players.

Definitely join up if ya can!

I must admit this sounds interesting and I just might apply. If you still want to accept more. Just so I can keep tabs on it let's roll stats!

Roll 1: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 6) = 13
Roll 1: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 4) = 10
Roll 1: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 4, 5) = 11
Roll 1: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 1) = 8

Roll 1: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 5) = 11
Roll 1: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 4) = 7

...wow..I don't even know what to try and do with that...

So, I have a general backstory written up at the moment, more to come when I am home from work.

Background:
Krysta was born around 22 years ago in rural Indiana and spent almost her whole life living within a few miles of the home she grew up in. She went to the community college in town and continued to live with her parents while she attended, but never got very far. She had never been very popular, too much of a book worm and nerd for her pears to have any real interest in her despite being pretty when she put the effort in, and she was at best average in athletics. She was not particularly charismatic and was considered rather gullible by most, but she was a good person. The only thing she had going for her was being above average in intelligence. Because of all of this the only friends she had, if she could call them that, were the boys in the anime fan club in High School and she wasn't too fond of them given they were far too enamored at having her in the club.

Krysta did end up making a few friends when she started college who played Pathfinder and got her interested enough to play it. She was introduced to the group by her classmate Jessica and quickly found herself fascinated with the various types of dragons, especially the crystal ones, and wondered what it would be like to live as such a thing. Her newfound friends got her quite involved and managed to drag her out of her shell some, so she became a bit more sociable than she had been before. This was when things went badly for her though as her gullibility led her to do something stupid.

Krysta had begun to get involved in LAARPing with her friends and it was on one of these nights when fate would strike. Krysta was unaware that her so called friends were trying to use manipulate her into trusting them. They were secretly part of a cult of "dark arts practitioners" and had been trying to find a way to get a virgin sacrifice. When Jessica learned about Krysta's past and lack of...experience, she knew she had found them the perfect victim. They had played the long game, conning Krysta into trusting them and convinced her to strip down and let them tie her to an alter for "sacrifice".

It wasn't until Krysta saw the all too real athame plunging down into her chest and begin to cut her open that she realized what was going on. Her last minutes were agony, and she was unable to pass out as they made sure she would be awake for the entire process. The last thing Krysta saw as the light of her life flickered out of this world was her heart being pulled from her chest and tossed onto a nearby fire as an offering to some entity whom she did not know, and her final thought was what it would have been like to soar through the skies as one of the dragons she had come to love. Little did Krysta know but she would soon get her wish, at least in part.

You all rolled rather poorly, your option is to reroll, or add a +4 to one ability and +2 to another.

Who rolled poorly, just Drogeney? or Me, Drogeney, bluedove and critzible all get this bonus?

If this is true for me as well
15 Strength (Will bump to 17 with the +2 Bonus)
15 Int (13 rolled and +2 Human for the 15)
13 Con (Will bump to 17 with the +4 Bonus)
10 Dex
9 Wis
8 Cha

Oh what the hell, let's chance it and re-roll.

3d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 1) = 11
3d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 5) = 14
3d6 ⇒ (5, 2, 2) = 9
3d6 ⇒ (4, 2, 6) = 12
3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 6) = 12
3d6 ⇒ (2, 1, 5) = 8
3d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 5) = 16

OK, that's much better!

Okay just need that crunch and how you are coming into the game. If similar to the others you start at level 1.

That is a good question. I assumed it would be lvl1 but what are the means of entry?

Sadly our power went out when storms tore through a couple hours ago. Looking unlikely it will be back anytime soon, something about 60 downed telephone poles

Power came back sooner than expected. Here is the initial build of Krysta. Everything is in the profile.

Corrected the natural attack damage dice, they were a step too big. I'll be getting a post in soon.
