Greetings! I'm planning to run a funnel adventure for 0-level characters, using the Dungeon Crawl Classics ruleset. Generally, in a DCC funnel game, there are a LOT of deaths. I mean, a lot! So players will usually run four characters at the same time - this is in part to level the battlefield (sort of...) when odds are stacked against them, and also so they can keep playing when one (or more) of their characters dies tragically.

I currently have three players interested, but I can take a couple more if there's anyone else out there looking for a DCC game that is a really nice blend of 1st and 5th edition D&D. Remember, this isn't for the light-hearted or those who expect their characters to survive! There will be character death, guaranteed! Perhaps even a TPK! But DCC really is a lot of fun, so don't let that scare you off.

If you don't have the rulebook, don't worry about it, as playing 0-level characters is VERY basic. I can let you know what to roll (there's crazy dice in DCC, d30, d24, d20, d16, all the way down to d3) when it comes up. I'll also post your characters in a slide format so you can see all four of your peasants in all their glory once you've rolled them up!

We won't worry too much about battlemaps with this many characters running around. It'll be theater of the mind type stuff - you can tell me if you're rushing into battle with your weapon or making a ranged attack (which, by the way, is VERY dangerous to allies in combat), but we'll get into all that later once we've got characters squared away.

If you all survive and are interested in a 1st level adventure, I can put up a pdf of the rulebook out there for those that don't have it, so folks can learn the intricacies of 1st level Warriors, Wizards, Clerics, Thieves, Dwarves, Halflings and Elves.

Sound good? Or at least intriguing? :)

For now, if you're interested, roll 4 sets of six 3d6. Be sure to separate them out into four distinct sets, so I can tell them apart. Don't worry so much about the scores, in fact getting low scores is usually a lot of fun! Remember, these guys and gals are basically peasants with delusions of grandeur. That said, if none of your characters have a decent stat or two among them, I may grant you a reroll for all four sets. But they'd all have to be really, really bad.

Once you've got your stats rolled up, I'll need a few more rolls before putting together your character sheets into a slide. As you did for your stats, roll FOUR sets of the following (one for each of your four characters):

1d4 (for HP)
5d12 (for cp, not gonna do much really, but hey!)
1d30 (birth augur)
1d24 (random piece of equipment)
1d100 (occupation)

That's it! Once you're done with all those rolls I'll create a slide that has all four of your 0-Level characters for easy reference. You can add names and pics if you'd like, but don't get too attached to them! :)

The name of the funnel adventure is Hole In The Sky, written by Brendan LaSalle. Once I've got enough interest, I'll start the game - though probably not until February 1st at the very earliest. Hope to see a couple more folks join in with the three I've got!

Sounds fun! Absolutely interested. Will make the necessary rolls in the morning.

That first one is crazy. Super high and low rolls.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I see my first '3'!

Lots of low scores yes, but nothing terribly overwhelming yet. There's a few decent scores in there to make up the difference a bit. Plus, DCC is all about facing the unknown with what are basically peasants looking to make a name for themselves! And if they die, you just roll up new ones to feed into the grinder!

So Tareth and Qstor, whoever gets the stats rolled up first can have that last spot. But go ahead and both of you make the rolls, as the second will be the reserve player in case someone drops out. Go ahead and roll 4 stats and choose your favorite 3.

I'm dropping Jolhbur, I think, (the last one).

And I have a couple of questions:
First, is a 3 an acceptable ability score? (These are peasants, I know, but I'd figured I'd ask)
Second, do ability scores get assigned in the order they were rolled or will we be allowed to move them around?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

3 is definitely an acceptable, and might I say even an expected ability score from time to time! Jeb is definitely going to be cannon fodder for you, as you try and save the other two! And yes, the ability scores fall where they may in order of abilities.

Which makes it interesting when you REALLY want to make a wizard character, but he's got a 15 STR and a 9 INT! But hey, in DCC, anything is doable!

Phillip, you missed a 3d6 roll on each of those last two characters of yours. Your Hunter also has a bow, and though the book doesn't cover this, I'm gonna be generous and give you some arrows to go along with it! :)

Please give me two 3d6 rolls, and a 5d4 roll to see how many arrows you have left in your quiver.

Also folks, let me know which of your characters you want to drop, as we'll probably go with everyone running three (assuming I get 8 players.) Just slap a line over it in the slides, or a text box, or whatever you'd like to mark it.

Hej, I have 5 GP on the moneylender! Maybe I can buy an actual weapon with it!
Since this was supposed to be non-Bukharin, like, what is possible in terms of thrown chemical concotions? Is 17 Int enough to make Molotov Cocktails? What could possibly go wrong!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Kriznox, you got yourself a lantern instead of a candle - a candle 3.0!

Liliyashanina, You are a rutabaga farmer! What the hell is a rutabaga? I know I've heard of them, but I'll have to look it up on the internet... Oh, and you're carrying around a duck! There's probably a joke in there somewhere, but I'm too tired...

Qstor, thank you for the offer my friend, but I've got a hangup about keeping things uniform, so I'll just do the slide myself - probably tomorrow night though. Glancing at your rolls though, I'll also need you to roll a 1d8 to determine your farmer type as well as a d6 for your farm animal. If you roll a 4, roll again until you get something different. Thanks!!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Oh! That's a rutabaga? Looks like a beet to me. I hate beets... :)

Almost missed your question about buying a weapon. Sure, you can trade in equipment on your character sheet (or the two moneylenders can use the coins in their fat pouches) to purchase weapons, armor or other equipment. I'll post another slide that has prices.

If you sell an item, you only get 50% market value. But a few of you have some pricey materials. Others have... well, dirt...

If you're wondering about the mithril, it's a very small amount - but hey, it's still a valuable metal. Figure you could sell it for 25gp.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

OK, the last couple slides have equipment, weapon and even armor prices - in case you are blessed with the kind of coin that can afford it! I also tossed up a chart that has some combat modifiers you might want to keep in mind. Note that -1d means one dice lower on the chain. Thus, a d20 becomes a d16. Come to think of it, I'll put the dice chain up there too.

Also, when your characters die (and they will!) dibs on their equipment goes to the player running the unfortunate soul. So if you've got your eye on that fancy sword or spear carried by your guy or gal with the terrible stats, rest assured that when they die, you can snatch it up for your 'better' character. :)

Rutabaga's aren't remotely like a beet. More like a cross between a turnip and a carrot. Delicious in a vegetable beef stew!
Pepi says "Or with haggis and mashed potatoes. They call it haggis with neeps & tatties."

As level 0 characters we're only proficient with the weapon we start with.... But if/when we reach level 1, the class that we choose changes that. Right?

Qstor, thank you for the offer my friend, but I've got a hangup about keeping things uniform, so I'll just do the slide myself - probably tomorrow night though. !

No problem!

farmer: 1d8 ⇒ 7

animal: 1d6 ⇒ 6

Radish and a mule!

I'll have the farmer sell the holy symbol, if that's OK. He prays that he doesn't have bad luck LOL.

Speaking of radishes!! No problem, can totally sell your stuff (at 50% value) to make purchases. After all, you're leaving your old lives behind to begin your adventuring career! Even if it ends (as it likely will) in horrible pain and death!

And Lemming, that's absolutely correct. In fact, any weapon a 0-Level picks up they are considered 'proficient' with. Odd, I know. What's even stranger is when you become an elf at 1st level and suddenly can't touch metal (except mithral - which that sword you had at 0 Level mysteriously turns into), oh and now you have infravision as well!

Farmer (Ferambus) sells the holy symbol and gets padded armor and a sling and sling stones.
He loans the sling to Marco? If that's okay with his cp he gets flint and steel and a torch.

Marco sells the chest and gets a grappling hook and with the cp rope and 3 torches.

Casper gets a 10' pole and torch.

Hey Qstor, if you want to roll another set of stats, I'll let you take best three of four - seems fair to me as everyone else wound up doing that.

OK :)

STR: 3d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 1) = 12
AGL: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 4) = 10

STA: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 2) = 6

INT: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 2) = 11

PER: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 5) = 12

LUCK: 3d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 6) = 15

Occupation: 1d100 ⇒ 29

EDIT I'll stick with the 1st 3. Thanks

Sounds good!

Most likely, I'll drop the Herder and keep the other 3, GM West.

For the name of the Locksmith, I'll go with Berry.

For the name of the Slave, I'll go with Charmy.

For the name of the Gravedigger, I'll go with Stormy.

All named after their birth augurs. ;p

Qstor, I think I've got your character sheets set up in slides. Check them out and see if they look good as far as coins remaining, etc. Note that I think you have Personality and Intelligence reversed - at least from the 'official' sheets I'm using (and also the order in the book), so let me know if you're cool with that.

Cool! Keep your eyes on this thread, I'm going to do a player head count soon. If I've got a slot to fill, you'll be up next!

We can get you those Ferambus, no worries! Any current players won't lose their spot due to 0-level deaths.
