Hi everyone, lately I have been wanting more and more to get back into DMing/GMing, so decided to drop a line and see who would be interested in participating in a low level PbP D&D 5e introductory adventure.

Admittedly I am more familiar with PF as a player and as a GM, but PF has been taking a route I am not very happy with - I feel like the amount of options and complex trait/feat/class/archetype abilities/magical items seems to be leading most people to create characters as an amalgam of numbers, and mechanical ways of breaking the system. To a point that I would only feel comfortable GMing with severe restrictions on allowed books.

So instead of that, and to make a long story short, I decided to try my hand at a different system - hence D&D5e. Some information about myself:

- I have GMed many times for my tabletop gaming group over the years in several systems (including D&D up to 4e), but my familiarity with D&D5e is superficial, so this will be a learning process, and patient/understanding players will be required ;)
- I have been around the Paizo forums for a long time, and played (still do) in a lot of games. Also tried GMing (unfortunately without much success) a few times. But I see immense potential in the opportunities afforded by PbP as far as roleplaying and creating rich stories. So I want to explore it much more.
- I will be starting really small and simple, but who knows where it can take us?
- I have been itching to try and revive some of that adventurous feeling of when I started playing RPGames many years ago, so regardless of wanting to start with a more streamlined adventure/module/scenario, I would like to introduce some sandbox-y themes here and there. I cannot guarantee I will be able to do this right from the get-go, but please be forewarned that in my book side quests can often become big adventures. And ‘handholding’ would not always necessarily be a thing as the game progresses.
- I am also wanting to give 5e a proper test drive, because I am seeing many conversions of old D&D modules/mega campaigns into this system, and that is something I would like to dig into in the future.
- I realize we are dangerously close to Christmas and New Year’s Eve, and so the timing might not be the best, but I wanted to get the ball rolling ;)

I think this is the gist of it - anything you would like to know, just ask. And let’s see if we have enough interest to achieve critical mass on this one.

5e is one of my favorite systems for low to mid-level play, count me interested

Dark Archive

I would be interested, especially if you open up sandbox themes in the game.

Liberty's Edge

Love a good game of 5e. I too have become a little tired of PF and 5e really gives that old-school D&D vibe.

Grand Lodge

Sounds like fun. Pretty much like starting a 5e tabletop game with friends and seeing where it goes. I'd be interested.

I'd be interested. Only played a little bit of 5E in the past and I'd like to get my teeth farther into it.

Have to get the character inspiration wheels turning. :)

That is the idea Malinor ;)

A bit like that yeah T'zadkiel. I am expecting to have a main story arc though (or perhaps even more than one).

That's actually my preference in homebrew games. Not pure sandbox, where I find it hard to develop good motivations beyond financial rewards, but a broad plot with lots of free reign in how we engage with it.

I'd like to try some more 5e. Is it gonna be Core only, or is the supplemental material also going to be available for character creation?

I'm playing a 5e game and enjoying it. I'd be interested!

JonGarrett wrote:

Hi Jon, I am thinking Core, to keep things simple in the beginning. If the group finds there is a good dynamic and are interested in continuing, then we can broaden our horizons, and characters can be... Modified ;)

That's fine. More options can be fun, but the characters I have in mind are both pretty much core, so I'm good.

Core book is all I've got, so it's fine with me too. :)

Any thoughts on setting/concept for the startup? Always sparks ideas for me.

I'm thinking of an old man Warlock/Sorcerer multiclass. Probably Fey Pact and Draconic Bloodline. Lot's of Eldritch Blasting with occasional extra spells tossed in on top.

The other possibility is a Human Barbarian with a glaive, rocking Polearm Master and Sentinel to control the battlefield and also splatter people.

I would say the overall tone and setting will revolve around a city/region in chaos and turmoil - a lawless, shabby remnant of what it once was and what it was struggling to become again. With no luck so far... About a decade ago they were bloated with the influx of refugees fleeing from barbarian attacks in a neighboring region - the ruler at the time was too coward and pampered to do anything about it, so things went downhill fast.

Now the Lord Protector has died unexpectedly, and a Knight Commander has temporarily taken his place, trying to keep a grasp on the throne with an almost immediately implemented martial law. All the while, the noble families and trading guilds hesitate to lend their full support, at least until they know exactly how helping with the rule of the city may benefit them.

With the martial law declaration, trade itself barely trickles in, wages have plummeted and prices have skyrocketed.... Work is also scarce - the building projects in the ruined parts of the city stand incomplete, since the Lord Regent has canceled most of them, in an attempt to cope with a depleted treasury.

Order is maintained to a certain point, though usually that is the point of a blade. Justice is selectively meted out based on one’s ability to pay bribes to corrupt watchmen or navigate the massive bureaucracy of the few true-believers who strain to hold the government together.

Like I said I want to start simple, so I will not be dissecting every single piece of the environment from the get-go. I have learned a long time ago not to go too megalomaniac with games, because usually you tend to overwhelm and paralyze yourself by your own overambitious scope :D

Hence the info provided is in broad strokes only - we will build on it as we go (if we get enough interested of course).

In any case, it is a grim scenario as you guys can see ;)

Sounds amazing...just the right atmosphere for a young thief to perhaps make a name for himself...I have an old character in mind that unfortunately did not get far...will examine and post for your approval!!

Definitely sounds like fun! I look forward to the official game recruitment.

Thank you all. I will let the interest check thread continue for a few days more, then get moving with the recruitment.

Hi everybody! =]

I am SO glad that another person is following what is becoming a well-trod path. Pathfinder (and all its ilk) is a bit like a feast of pasta: You can stuff yourself silly on all its empty calories and options, but you'll never really feel like it hit the spot.

I'm right there with ya. It seems like not only does PFS have too many options (way too many of which are nothing more than power creep) but also many of those options are uninteresting, meant to do little more than "add +2 to your next die roll".

So, yes, I say that 5E is not only the best version of D&D, but quite possibly the best RPG on the market. (I can say that I might love Shadowrun and Battletech more, but I'm also the first to say none of their many, many versions can even be called a "playable" system.)

As a side note, I don't think that familiarity with the system plays a big role, for -exactly- the reason that we're talking about; there simply aren't sooo many rules that you need to know about in order to play. There's no flanking rules, there's no firing-into-melee rules. There's no specialization bonus, there's no skill points, there's no favorite class bonus. There's attribute and proficiency and they don't even change too often and that's about it so roll the dices!

By extension, feel no need to limit to the core books. There's a wonderful SRD found here, and I use it often. (Alas, with the latest book there are power creep landmines that do need to be avoided. The community is mostly negative on Optional Class Features, and the Customized Origin has been totally rejected. But other than that let fly! There's even a UA version of the Ranger that is much more flavorful without being much more powerful.)

Tally ho! =]

Gah, I always see these late. I'd be down for playing, love 5e. Your broad strokes outlined above sound like a great time to me.

Any idea of setting? I'm fine with any, just curious.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

You are not late mishima ;)

The broader setting is Forgotten Realms, but we will start with a narrower one - that of a city-state in the Moonsea region.

And thank you for the encouraging words Atlas 2112! I will take a look at that SRD.

Oh hell yeah, Moonsea has been one of my favs since that 2e book with the guy beating the crap out of someone with a loaf of bread on the cover. :D

While we patiently, eagerly, and with baited breath wait out the holiday slow and day dream about the siiiiick character we just thought up, I thought I might broaden the theme we have of "Why 5E totally rocks and is better than other things."

One of the many moments where StarFinder really disappointed me, was when I got into a game and I made a MindBreaker Mystic. The character was all about casting spells that need a Will save, and if you make the save you take damage anyway. MUHAHAHAHA! I thought, 'awwww yeaaaaaah this is gonna be sweeeet.' My daydreams were full of squishing heads.

Half the campaign was played against robots.

The other half was against undead.

Both undead and robots are immune to mind-affecting spells.

For as long as we played, I was side-lined and crushed, missing away with a pistol while the Operative had all the fun.

Compare this soul-breaking experience with what 5E has done with the Bard, and a single spell, in the same vein: Viscous Mockery.

It would be very, very easy to say 'yeah, well, undead are immune because they don't care is they're momma is so fat, she looks at a menu and says "yes,"' and 'yeah, well, slimes are immune because they don't care if they're so dumb, if stupid could fly they'd be a dragon,' and 'yeah, well, giant worms are immune because they don't care if they're like Mondays, nobody likes them.' And such.

But they didn't. They didn't say 'undead are dumb and are therefore immune to any spell that calls for a Wisdom save,' they said 'undead are dumb and therefore they are -vulnerable- to any spell that calls for a Wisdom save.'

Thank you for keeping the thread alive Atlas2112 (and for making me laugh)! :)

From my end, I have been pacing myself a bit since I know we are fully in Holidays season right now, and most people's attention will probably be focused elsewhere.

However, my traveling plans have been somewhat affected by Covid19, and I may be staying home for the whole time. So I may still move ahead with the Recruitment post in that case, since like I said it will be no more than a straightforward adventure for starters, which does not require extensive considerations before beginning.

Also, if I am staying mostly home, then I will be more available to keep my eye on it, while also keeping myself busy with homemade eggnog and all the other good Christmas-y stuff.

Lets see how things develop this week.

P.S. And Atlas2112, now you got me wishing there was an Intelligent slime monster... What a tremendous villain it would make.

I am opposite the trend in that I become more active during the holidays. I literally have nothing to do but drink egg nog and D&D.

Do you imagine it will be standard character creation? I'd love to get started at least making the character.

Really the 5e creation is pretty solid and no need to house rule it. The main two things I consider are rolled stats vs point buy, and rolled gold vs standard packages.

Personally, just from experience both as DM and player, I think rolled stats are really overkill for 5e and would prefer point buy.

However, I do like rolled gold for the customization of equipment. Another way to do equipment is the Adventurer's League way, everyone takes standard packages but then you can sell stuff back during creation to get some pocket change to spend on custom stuff. I like that too.

It will definitely be standard character creation with point buy.

Personally as a newcomer player to D&D5e, I prefer equipment packages, but I think I will leave the option open to the players, regarding rolled gold vs standard packages - you can take which one you prefer.

I may change it at the time of the actual recruitment (if I find any reason for it), but for now we can assume freedom of choice ;)

Thanks for the info, am going to get a wizard together.

I've thought more and am now considering a down on their luck bard.

Subject to the passage of time and more info when the recruitment post comes out inspiring something else.

Grand Lodge

Sounds fun I might try my hand at another Cleric. Might even do a Tiefling Nun idea!

Grand Lodge

But as for 5e It is full of amazing potential and I believe a nice platform to homebrew and roleplay more

Grand Lodge

I've only tried playing a wizard in 5e, which I enjoyed very much, but would be up for playing pretty much anything. Maybe a fighter or ranger. Will have to think on this.

Grand Lodge

So a Tiefling Girl abandoned at a Temple to Selune. She was raised in the church and has become very active in the worship of the Goddess, but also very knowledgeable connecting too and showing her preference to the Knowledge Domain.

She eventually leaves called to spread the words and teaches of the Goddess as well as her protection to all. She is strong in her worship but not always able to deal with the authorities outside the temple.

You are welcome, sir! Since I'm too pretty to be a stand-up comic, I have to channel all my creative energy here. =3

Please, I consider you to be a friend, so just Atlas is fine. =]

I see people mentioning character concepts, and that looks like fun, but I also wanna talk up 5E some more, so Imma do both.

I have stated in the past, in oratory and with logic, that, for every D&D iteration up to and including Pathfinder, that there were some classes that were just useless. A popular phrase from the internet was "XP sponge". Either that, or, if you took a different class, and built it toward doing what you wanted to do with the sponge class, you could do that thing better, and still have a class-load of tricks behind you.

The biggest target of this, I think, was the bard. It's been through a -lot- of testing to try and and make it a viable class, but I've never seen people line up to play it based on how effective it could be. It always seemed that a cleric or mage could be geared toward support and be just as good and just as fun, no matter the parameters. (I tried to make a Pathfinder bard once. I determined that the only possible thing that could save it was a whip-build, but then I found that whip builds were really hard so I drank heavily and forgot about the whole thing.)

But then comes 5E. And I will say, with oratory and logic, that it is among the TOP of classes to play. BAM! Fixed it, nailed it. I'm playing a blade bard (a subclass which sucked ever since it's introduction in 2E) in my RL group and it is AMAZING. I'm healing with spells, I'm effective in melee, I'm tossing around the inspiration ("If at first you don't succeed, try, try again, although maybe skydiving isn't for you." "Whatever you do, give it 100%. Unless you're giving blood." "No matter what, be yourself. Unless you can be Batman. Then be Batman.") and the table is loving it.

I've thought this about other classes too; the thief, the druid, the monk, things that might be fine to play a certain way, but they need some TLC. I'm not saying that some of the fine people on these boards haven't done a proper job, but I've just never seen one of those played and wanted to eat my fist out of envy.
And 5E has just straight up fixed them. Same thing with races. I've never played a halfling or elf because I didn't see how they could compete with human and a well-placed feat. But with 5E?

I guess what I'm trying to say is that, special for this game, I have a BANGING idea for a character that is a combination of two things I've never played before. I don't wanna spoil it just yet, but it's gonna be BA. AF.

XYZ.

PDQ.

i'd consider joining depending on character creation details.

I am gonna focus on Clerics have another for a Dark Elf Hermit Cleric of Eilistarae[ always botch the spelling] Who has the Light Domain.

Night try a couple more ideas. As for the system I like that it is flexible here and there and very streamlined. Though not my favorite DnD system [That would be Hackmaster 4e] but very fun in its own way

Dark Archive

We've got a lot of talk about characters, and it looks like a lot of fun, so I wanted to join in.

Also, ever since I started thinking about this character, the little guy has been growing on me. He's turning into one of those ideas you just have to give life to.

I don't really have crunch down yet, but that's really secondary. What I'm going for is playing a race and class that is a combination of two things I've never ever played before, and making them awesome. =)
That it's the unlikely pairing of Halfling and Druid only makes it more succulent.

Apologies to Braveheart. Rumors that Lord Borak is an intelligent slime monster are as yet unconfirmed.

backstory:

Men will say I am a liar.

But history has been written by men that have hanged heroes.

So when I say I am a leprechaun, a man would call me mad.  "Go on with ya now, Johnny Boy," they'd say, followed by some nonsense that I'm Halfer.  A Half-man, a Half-tall, a Half-ling.  And I say I'm not half, but all of me, and that's half-again more'n most I'd wager.  And I'm a leprechaun.

For what else but they fey folk could have such luck as to walk away from that night Patty and his bully boys came to our house a'calling?

It were just the four of us having a bit of a set.  The twins, Jimmy and James, myself, and our leader, Liam.  Four halflings enjoying a wee drop that is ours for ranging the forests and bringing in its harvest, be it a fat stag to sell at market, or the ears of bad'uns that took our lands for easy pickings.

"You'll be owing Mr. Murphy some money," Patty said, waltzing in as easy as ya please.  He had a brace of ruffions behind him, tall men like him, and they found themselves cramped in our cozy warren.

"Get fluffed," Liam shot back, not bothering to put down his pipe.  "Mr. Murphy got his stack this month so you'll get not a copper more from me, good sir.  Now fluff off."

I was just to thinking that we might get out'a this without a bit of the rough and tumble so I piled on.  "And fluff off right quick, or you'll get a taste of me shillelagh, and I'm not thinking you'll like it too much."

"You just pipe down there, Johnny-Boy," Patty pipes right back at me.  "Besides, me shillelagh is bigger than your'n."  That hurt.  The man did have a big shillelagh.  Everyone said. "I know that," he says, back at Liam, "But Mr. Murphy says yer coin is light, so'm thinking you'll be making up the difference the now."

"That's a sodding lie and you know it!" says Liam, shooting up from his chair, followed na'ry a half-hair behind by the rest of us.  And then it was on.

I gave a good accounting of myself.  Being the youngest of my bunch I'm proud to say I gave all of Patty's trio a right good thumping.  For all the good it did me.  The two gruffs Patty brought with him fought like demons and put us all down for the dirt nap.

Just as all was going black, I hear one of the gruffs say to Patty, "You can tell Mr. Murphy the debt is discharged.  Lord Borak the Despoiler will be most pleased."

********************

And then I wake up.

I was much surprised, I tell you sir.  I thought I was a deader for certain.  But after a pleasant nap I woke up and got up and got the fluff out'a there I can tell you and no mistaking.

So now I got no home, no friends, no grubstake, just me and my wits and my particular charms of nature to tide me over. I need to sharpen and grow and finally have a good long talk to Mr. Murphy about who owes who what just before I give the same visit to this Mr. Borak or whatever.  Just me and me luck against the whole bleeding world.

Which is how a leprechaun likes it best.

Merry Christmas everyone!

I am currently mulling over the Recruitment post - think I may just continue with this thread instead of creating a new one.

In hushed tones, it is said the Cult of the Dragon has come to Phlan.

Some will dismiss such claims, but regardless of their veracity, fact is the town is no more than a lawless refuge on the Moonsea, with really no significant authority to stop whatever forces may be operating in the darkness, if there are any at all.

The trading guilds and noble houses are too busy finding an ‘angle’ to explore in all of this - after all, the misery of many can be the bounty of others. On the other hand, most of the ‘average’ working citizens are backed into a sort of ‘survivability mode’ - it is hard to concern yourself with anything else, when you have to struggle daily to put food on the table.

Fortunately rumors work both ways, and there are others claiming certain power groups in the Realms are indeed paying attention — the Harpers, Order of the Gauntlet, Emerald Enclave, Lords’ Alliance, same even say the Zhentarim — paying attention to Phlan, and indeed to the whole Moonsea region.

You were told that Madame Freona’s Tea Kettle was the place where adventurers could find work and avoid the hassle associated with other places in Phlan. So far, that has been true. Madame Freona, a stout and officious halfling who runs the establishment with her five daughters, has proven an excellent hostess.

Although you have had to share a common bunkroom with several other adventurers, the evening meal was excellent and the atmosphere is pleasant. You are preparing to bunk down for the evening when one of Freona’s daughters peeks into the room. She calls a few of the adventurers, including you, into the hall.
“Pardon my interruption,” says the halfling girl named Reece, one of Freona’s five daughters, just shy of adulthood. “A fellow just came into the common room downstairs and asked me to fetch you. Something about some coin needing to change hands for an easy job.” She plays with her curly red hair nervously.

——-

Welcome everyone to the official recruitment post for a ‘low level D&D5e introductory adventure’! To recap some of the information I had already posted:

- I have GMed many times for my tabletop gaming group over the years in several systems (including D&D up to 4e), but my familiarity with D&D5e is superficial, so this will be a learning process, and patient/understanding players will be required ;)
- I have been around the Paizo forums for a long time, and played (still do) in a lot of games. Also tried GMing (unfortunately without much success) a few times. But I see immense potential in the opportunities afforded by PbP as far as roleplaying and creating rich stories. So I want to explore it much more.
- I will be starting really small and simple, but who knows where it can take us?
- I have been itching to try and revive some of that adventurous feeling of when I started playing RPGames many years ago, so regardless of wanting to start with a more streamlined adventure/module/scenario, I would like to introduce some sandbox-y themes here and there. I cannot guarantee I will be able to do this right from the get-go, but please be forewarned that in my book side quests can often become big adventures. And ‘handholding’ would not always necessarily be a thing as the game progresses;

As for character creation rules:

- Keep it simple. I want the game to start purposefully small, and then grow from there (or not). So I am looking for characters with a narrow scope, but with room to grow. No need to go too overboard (unless you like to do so :D).Your reasons to be in Phlan do not need to be exhaustively described - a few simple sentences will do. Throw in some additional details, personality, background and objectives (if any).They can be just broad strokes - stuff upon which you (and me) eventually can build on as the game goes on. I will not be choosing characters based on the length of their background;
- Character level 1;
- You have 27 points to spend on your ability scores. Using this method, 15 is the highest ability score you can end up with, before applying racial increases. And you can't have a score lower than 8. Please be mindful before using dump stats - I tend to be a pretty lenient DM with stuff like encumbrance, and all that, but if someone presents me a character with a 6 stat, it will most likely have consequences in game;
- Standard (not customized) backgrounds;
- Starting equipment is up to you - either the usual combination of equipment you receive from class and background, or I can roll for your starting money;
Apart from this, I am not placing any restrictions on character creation. However if the info it is not in Core Handbook I will need you to point out to me where it can be found;
- Posting rate: this is a tricky one - I am not sure games in which players only post once a day have a real chance to move forward adequately, and I would like those participating to be able to post more than that. But reality being what it is, we'll keep the common 'requirement/request' of at least once post per day. More important that that however, is the nature of the posts themselves - make sure to acknowledge what is going on in the game, the actions of others, and the existence of an environment. I do not have many pet peeves, but posts done without attention to what has been going on around the characters (for example not reading the previous ones) is something that frustrates me :P;
- Lastly, a note: do not think of your characters as a ‘self contained unit’. Even if you want to play a loner or silent type, remember you are not supposed to be able to do everything on your own. This is a game to be played as a group - there is no point in creating a character which can do everything, as it will most likely not fit well in the aforementioned group - there must be room for everyone.

I think that is all, but I am probably forgetting something, so please feel free to drop any questions, and let me see those characters! ;)

I'll throw my hat into the ring. I could use being on the player side of things for a bit. Not sure exactly what I'll pull together concept wise. Just so I'm clear, what books are you allowing? Just the PBH or some of the later options as well?

Hi Tareth, I am not placing any restrictions on character creation.

However since I am a noob 5e DM, if the info it is not in Core Handbook I will need you to point out to me where it can be found, so I can take a look at it ;)

The fellow, called 'Slasher' for some reason, but his pinched eyes and scrawny arms called to question if he had ever actually slashed anything. Slasher had a halfling sized suit of cured wolf Hide Armor, he said it came from a halfling barbarian who had decided to hang it up and farm some good black soil 2 leagues south of town after some of his friends died to an attack of goblins who had brought along a rust beast. After losing his favorite axe and his best friend he had a change of heart. Even though he had only survived because of the tough armor, which he had made for himself after slaying an alpha wolf and his entire pack, he couldn't stand that sight of it and used the coin it brought to supply himself with a handsome stock of rutabagas (which are very profitable in this region, so I was told), several chickens. and a mating pair of pigs. So I added 5 gold from the sale of my scimitar to the trade-in of my leather and found myself wondering why wolf hide was tougher than cow hide but it really didn't matter much and the inside of it was -reallly- soft so I just let it drop.}

Shield: with An Own decayed on it.

Background: Selene grew up as an offered orphan to the church, raised by a masterly priestess named Olanna Vesk. She was bookish and thought weird by most due to her Infernal blood. She however worked hard in all the libraries and chores to the point she began to believe in the Goddess and live her teachings.

She grew to be a fine young priestess, who helped many. She eventually met the Half Elf Paladin Dru (Drusilla) Eveningdew and became good friends. Eventually through Dru she met Bor Marsk a silversmith anderchant. The two hit if off, fell in live and married. They spent 5 years together. Selene doing her clerical works and Bors doing his trade. Eventually he raised enough to move to Phlan to open up a shop, but on that trek to set up his shop and there home he was Murderer and that spurred Selene to head out and seek who could of killed her husband.

Hi Tareth, I am not placing any restrictions on character creation.

However since I am a noob 5e DM, if the info it is not in Core Handbook I will need you to point out to me where it can be found, so I can take a look at it ;)

Cool. So I'm thinking about giving a Phantom Rogue a try. Background, race, and all that still TBD.
