Max probably knew this information by having friends who were into this stuff. Especially the oougi board he played with as a child, that was a start into this kind of stuff, but that was child's play and got himself into more interesting things. Though he or his friends may or may not have participated in this exact activity, it is his guess having dealt with these kind of things.
Max feeling he is completely useless and doesn't have any way of stopping it will move out of the room a full 25 feet and raise shield, just in case something comes up behind him, or they follow him.
