The Grand Hunt (Inactive)

Game Master Brolof

Will this be a short adventure about a single island? Or will it grow to something larger? I don't know, let's find out!

Life in the Ironbound Archipelago is a hard one. The soil is stony and poor, the seas are rough, and danger lurks around every corner. One must do what one can to survive. The inhabitants of Chaldoth’s Tooth and Svinheim know this well. The small village of around one hundred makes do, fishing and raising swine. Yet with a mysterious string of disappearances and winter closing in, the small village stands on the precipice of disaster. So the word is sent by windrider, to Kalsgard, Bildt, Halgrim, Jol, and Trollheim. A magical reward, for whoever can solve these disappearances.

Do you ever get the itch? It’s been a while since you did something, and you wanna do it? Yeah, that’s me. It’s been a while since I ran an adventure in Pathfinder, so… Gonna be trying to fix that! Brolof, GM of several years who hasn’t gotten the chance to run anything in a bit. Decided to go to the one place I know for a fact that I can get players and not have to worry about scheduling!

Homebrew adventure set in Golarion because everyone knows Golarion. I’ve got an idea for how to potentially continue it to high levels, but just so I don’t overwhelm myself, this adventure should start at around level 3 and end at around level 6. Three levels of adventure seem reasonable.

I'll leave applications open for about a week. See what we get!

--====--
Character Creation
25 Point Buy with no higher than 18 or lower than 8 after racial bonuses.
Races: All Paizo races below 20 RP, within reason.
Classes: All classes allowed.
Two Traits of your choice, with the option of taking the drawback for a third.
Background skills will be a thing.
Flat starting gold of 3000.

Basically, I allow all Paizo content and a large degree of freedom. As long as you’re using the freedom to build something interesting, and not something is broken, you’re good in my book.

In the same vein, my only real requirement for alignment is that it A) makes sense, and B) doesn’t harm the group overall/hurt anyone else’s enjoyment. Don’t derail things.

Background
I want something. Doesn’t have to be a lot, just something. The only things present are that they’ve gotta come to Chaldoth’s Tooth for either the Grand Hunt or to investigate the strange disappearances. Kinda need a reason for the party to be working together you know?

Homebrew
Feat Tax Doc a friend of mine made ages ago. Helps martials and half-casters not have to jump through as many hoops for interesting builds.

I'm still looking for a second game to play in to fill out my slate, and I like the look of this a lot. "Homebrew in Golarion" seems to not come up as often as "published adventure in Golarion" or "entirely homebrew setting".

I've got an aggressively weird character idea I've wanted to try out for a while. Though, with this being set in the Lands of The Linnorm Kings I might go with something more suitably viking-y instead.

Also maybe it's an issue on my end, but that google docs link seems to just be taking me to my shopping cart on the Paizo site? Strange.

Fixed it. I had the url in the wrong spot.

Thanks!

Also, wow, that feat tax house rule takes a *ton* of early level feat pressure off of my "aggressively weird" character, so maybe it's time to let that out into the wild.

Yeah, it's meant to give characters more freedom of choice. Just in general as well as in feats.

What is your desired post rate?
How do you want us to roll HP?
How many people are you taking on?
How long is recruitment?

Ah, the universal constant, forgetting to put things in the original post.

Once a day is ideal, three to four times a week is the minimum.

Just take the average +1, no point in muddling about with rolling.

Party between 3 and 5.

That's actually in the original post, applications are open for around a week. If there's absolutely no one responding

Brolof wrote:

I know, right?

Thanks for the answers. Sorry I missed that one :)

Really liking the idea of where this is set up. I’ll start crunching some numbers and concepts.

Cool! Always love some Golarion homebrew. I’ve got an Ulfen Beast-Wrestler brawler I think I’ll rework for this.

Dotting for interest. I should be able to get a character up by the end of the week.

So, while I’m toying with concepts, I wanted to ask a couple of questions.

First, is kitsune okay? It doesn’t list an RP, but I don’t think it’d be more than 20.

Second, are there firearms?

If you can explain why a Kitsune would be there, then sure. Also yes, firearms are a thing in Golarion, so they're a thing here.

A question, what is the Grand Hunt? I am not finding anything on PathfinderWiki

... I'm an idiot. I went through a few rough drafts of the opening post and the base concept of the adventure, and one was a hunting competition to take place on the island. I scrapped that and went with a more generic adventure hook, so ignore that.

Well, I might start work on a mistake-prone Hunter who travelled to join the Grand Hunt but showed up in the wrong town. :)

I've decided I'm going to split from what I was working on and maybe adjust my witch for this campaign.

You do you dude, you do you.

How do you view 3pp content? I mainly ask because I'd like to use some of the classes I have sitting around - no intention to break the rules, and I can pass the info along to pre-approve if needed.

Third party's iffy with me, but I can take a look and see what you're wanting to use.

I feel crazy. I thought this game was using ABP but I don't see mention of it anywhere. Must have mixed this up with a different recruitment. Whew. Haha.

Back to the drawing board on gear, then. Otherwise I'm almost done. I am inordinately proud of this weird little monster I'm cooking up.

This is RamzaBeoulve's submission, The Imp.

Horrifyingly monstrous on the outside, precious cinnamon roll too good for this world on the inside.

I still have a few things to pen in: gear, class abilities list, and background, but the general gist is:

Had it the worst of the worst in the slave caste in Cheliax, as both a Halfling and a Tiefling. Add to that her specific manifestations of her Infernal heritage giving her a striking resemblance to the lowest of low Devils and she was doomed to one of the most wretched existences in the Infernal empire - an achievement of a kind.

A paladin of Irori, reluctantly visiting on business, sensed her inexplicably pure heart and a preternatural talent for channeling ki and liberated her by purchasing her contract and then releasing her from it.

Studying under her liberator and mentor for several years, she honed her natural inclination for channeling ki into a unique fighting style: emitting powerful blasts of force with her bare-handed strikes, allowing her to scatter the ranks of her often much larger opponents.

Once her mentor deemed her training complete, he bid her to walk Golarion, testing herself, her convictions, and her dedication to perfection of the self.

If you're wondering how excited I am at the prospect of knocking jerks around like so many bowling pins with this bizarre little gremlin, the answer is: Extremely.

They sound horrifically adorably, as well as being a creative build. I'm a fan! Also, as the one who knows what shall come down the line with this adventure, I am internally cackling like a mad man. Things will get very interesting very quickly.

Haha, I am glad you like her! She's been percolating in the back of my head for a while now, and with the reduced feat tax rules I figured it was time to pull the trigger.

I'll get her last details filled in over the next couple days.

Thanks for taking it into consideration. I think the first 3pp book I purchased for Pathfinder has yet to be used, so I'll go with that. Here are the links to the classes that show up there (from Super Genius Games):

Archon
Shadow Assassin
Death Mage
Magister

I'm ok with taking a stab at any of them. Since they came out before the base/hybrid classes, the mechanics are relatively self contained.

I looked through them, and the two I'll give the okay to are the Archon and the Death Mage. Shadow Assassin seems like it can very easily be extremely broken, as does the Magister.

Alright. I am finished. I will present my character Scarlet Grey.

SmooshieBanana wrote:

Looks at Scarlet Grey. Sees Seducer Witch. Looks at the adventure. Looks back at Seducer Witch. Proceeds to cackle madly.

Oh no…

@Brolof:

I wanted to round out The Imp's characterization a little better, so I'm dropping K. History (Lore: Irori should be enough to cover her education from her mentor, I think) and replace it with Profession: Cook. I like the idea of her Handy Haversack crammed full with an entire cook's kit and a slew of ingredients.

I wanted to ask permission for a handwave, though, as a mercy: I'm scrolling through the rather extensive list of itemized foodstuffs for Pathfinder and after two days of staring at my store's order forms on top of that I feel like my eyeballs are about to melt. Would you be okay with me just doing 10gp for 10lbs of various foodstuffs for the equivalent of a few better-than-average meals for the party while camping?

That's perfectly fine dude, no need to go into mega detail over something as basic as cooking supplies.

I would like to ask: what climate are we going into and what time of year? Should we pack heavy for survival into the wilds or is this likely from reports likely to be near the village and an inn?

SmooshieBanana wrote:

For Climate, think British Columbia in the spring. The island isn't so large that you're gonna have to spend multiple nights out in the wilderness. You can probably get away with just the stuff to survive a night or two in the wilderness.

I'll leave this recruitment up for a bit longer, hopefully at least one other person actually drops a character.

Waives at SmooshieBanana

Brolof, do you need another character? Ivar's from the Ironbound Archipelago, no reason he couldn't be from Svinhelm visiting kin. Hearing about the strange disappearances he came to investigate.

I've played with SmooshieBanana in a couple of games. Had a good time. I'm in enough games to scratch my itch, but no reason not to jump in if you just need one more player.

If no one else bites the hook, yes. I could greatly use a third.

I've been eying the recruitment myself, I'll get something up and running soon!

I have a hunter nearly done. I hope to have the submission up tonight.

Okay, I did exactly that. Here is my submission. I built the PC in Hero Lab, but if selected I'll re-do this alias page to break out the bonuses and to make everything more readable. In the meantime, if there are any questions for concerns, let me know.

This PC is an archer, but if a melee type works better in this party, I can re-build. The (fairly ridiculous) concept would stay the same.

I have a history of keeping up with PbPs on this board, and homebrew games are my jam. Thanks for the consideration!

Glad to see the character my dude. I think them being ranged is fine, got at least two melee characters presented already.

Waves back!

I think you should throw Ivar in there regardless. From the cackling of the GM, I'm slightly worried...

Just a hypothetical question here, but would you be willing to let the fencing grace feat work on a sword cane?

Is this still open? I think it would be perfect for an Alchemist (Investigator)

Yes, I definitely would be willing to.

Get it in quick and sure!

Cool Beans. I'll finish tonight, thanks.

Ah see, I was thinking of making an investigator with some alchemy!
