Application List To Date
Pride of Lyon’s Brook: human? Bard/rogue combo (still WIP)
Black Sheep: half-elf wizard
Average Joe: human rogue
Sir Eustus’ Ward: human tactician fighter
Stranger in Town: human paladin/sorcerer
Are there any other folks who had expressed interest who are still reading and ruminating on character ideas? I know this recruitment is head-heavy up front, and deadline isn't for another four days, though if there aren't any other folks, I can close it up early.

Currently working on submitting a half-elf oracle. I'm reading back up a bit on Taldor and the status of half-elves in Taldor in general from the War for the Crown player's guide. Hope to have the background made up somewhere tonight and sent via PM.
I'll probably go for Stranger in Town as the role.

Nazard |

So just to be transparent on how I'm going to be choosing people, I am copying and pasting the backgrounds sans player names into a document, divided by role. I've been trying really hard not to memorize whose character is whose, and will aim to select people based solely on how well their stories and backgrounds fit into the setting and overarching story.
I must say, folks so far (and I'm sure the entries still coming in) are really raising this bar to uncomfortable heights. In a way, I'm glad that there are a few more coming in; I find it much easier to say no to five or six people than I do one or two.

I know I'm late to the party but I've been sick all week and just saw this. I'm definitely into this idea and if I can make enough time (between catching up at work and catching up with my other games) I'll put together a submission too. I'm not sure which role yet (I'll have to look at the background info a bit more to figure that out).

2 people marked this as a favorite. |

For folks still looking for ideas on how to connect with the locals, I started a project that I shouldn't have, but I couldn't stop once I did: Rogue's Gallery of Lyon's Brook
Actually running the slide show is the best way to read through the entries.

Here’s my submission!
Sir Gallant is a human cavalier with the hooded knight archetype and the Stranger in Town trait.
Step 1:
1. The hood Sir Gallant always wears. There is never a time when he removes it, and even if it somehow were, he wears a large kerchief with eye holes across his face to keep as much of it obscured as possible. In short, he has no face, as his lord Ng demands of him.
His name, or lack thereof. His face was one price that Ng asked of him, his name was another. It is his oath to protect the wanderers of Avistan, and in the image of a courtly knight he took the name Sir Gallant.
2. Sir Gallant’s former life. There was a time when brave Sir Gallant was not brave, gallant, or the noble, dashing warrior he is today. His past is vague, but he maintains that the tale he tells of it is as old as it is true. Judging from his voice, however, he’s not a very old man. Sir Gallant was a bandit, travelling the back roads of the River Kingdoms, stealing from anyone who deserved it and many who didn’t. He was a villainous rake, robbing and plundering by day, cavorting with lovely lads and lasses by night.
3. The origins of his curse. One evening, he came across an old woman, walking alone. She was defenseless, and her dirty, ragged robes suggested she might not have much. Still, times were lean and the heavy bag on her back could have some gold or food in it.He charged in, shoving her to the ground and knocking her senseless before she had a chance to fight back. Though he found some dried fruit and worn clothes in her bag, she wore an armband, one like he’d never seen. It was wooden, made of tangled, thorny vines, twisted together, unable to tell beginning from end. As he put it on, the thorns bit into his flesh and he felt something wash over him. It was terror, fear of the dark things that lurk just out of sight in the woods. No matter how hard he strained, he could not take off the armband. Just as thorny vines cling to the rock, so too did the armband cling to him. Nightmares wracked him, turning a restless night into a restless week, slumping into one month, then two, then three.
4. His vow to Ng the Hooded. The nightmares tortured him, of unfathomable creatures watching him from the woods of the River Kingdoms, and a hooded figure he could never quite track down that tailed him from time to time. He woke from a nightmareHe awoke from a nightmare, as was common. A figure loomed over him, and he thought he had awoken into another nightmare. This, however, was different. The figure pulled him to his feet, and as he looked into the hood he saw everything and nothing all at once. He saw his misdeeds and mistakes, the sins uncounted of his past. He saw the curse he’d been burdened with, one he knew he deserved. And the figure spoke. Sir Gallant cannot remember exactly what the being said, but it offered salvation from his curse. It gave him an offer. He could renounce his name, his face, his very being and become a protector of the Hooded One’s chosen, a defender of the lonely wanderers who travel the roads that he once preyed on. Or, he could refuse, and let the nightmares swallow him whole. The choice was hard, but when he awoke from the first easy slumber in almost a year he knew he had made the right one.
5. His life since he took the cowl and swore himself to Ng the Hooded. Sir Gallant has wandered the roads of Avistan, protecting travellers from beasts and banditry. As of late, he’s found himself in the sleepy Taldan town of Lyon’s Brook. None in town know his purpose, not even him. Yet the road has lead him here, and it is not his place to question the will of Ng the Hooded.
Step 2:
1. Sir Gallant would like to learn of his reason for being in Lyon’s Brook. Ng always leads him somewhere for a reason, yet his master is vague as always as to precisely why the roads of Avistan have lead Sir Gallant to the town.
2. I’d like to see Sir Gallant’s connection to the fey and to Ng grow stronger. They’re a key part of his story, and one of my favorite parts of the game.
Step 3:
1. His name and face, of course. He renounced them both when he swore himself to Ng but they still weigh heavy upon his mind. He’s kept his distance from people over the years, doing his best not to become attached to them. If he ever does meet someone he wishes to be close to, though, he worries for the status of his curse if he is ever to be unmasked.
2. Somewhere in the River Kingdoms, a group of bandits have sworn that they want to see Sir Gallant dead. He ruined a massive score that his former posse tried to pull off shortly after taking the cowl, and in an amateur mistake he accidentally exposed his face to them. Now, they want revenge, and will not rest until they have it.
Step 4:
1. Iolask, a wandering cleric of Ng and the closest thing to a friend that Sir Gallant has. They met at a shrine to the Hooded Lord, and travelled together for a while after. Sir Gallant’s surprising charm won over the introverted cleric, and their shared faith made it easy for Sir Gallant to remain hooded, and they’ve wandered the roads of Avistan since then. Recently, Iolask’s path has taken him west, while Sir Gallant was drawn south to Lyon’s Brook.
2. Otho, Sir Gallant’s horse. Sir Gallant is fiercely protective of him, going so far as sleeping in stables on occasion to make sure that Otho is treated well and spending as lavishly as he can to make sure that Otho has plenty of tasty treats and good grooming. They’ve ridden together for years, and Otho has been nothing but loyal. Sir Gallant figures that loyalty should be reciprocated.
3. Andor, the leader of Sir Gallant’s former posse, and his sworn enemy. Andor will stop at nothing to see Sir Gallant exposed, humiliated, and killed, preferably in that order. He’s lost many followers as a result of his obsession, but his hatred burns just as strong.
Step 5:
1. Sir Gallant, despite his fairly odd nature, is devilishly charismatic. He loves a tall tale or a bawdy joke, and deeply enjoys the time he can spend with people. At the end of the day, he is always alone and frequently on the road, makes good company all the sweeter.
2. He has an odd habit of lamenting about the handsome face that none will ever see again, and the songs of a rakish young bandit sung by pretty barmaids that none will ever recognize as being him. It is mourning, in a way, for a life that was lost.
3. Sir Gallant remembers his first day as Sir Gallant. His encounter with his god was fresh in his mind, and his new life as someone else was still overwhelming. Strangely though, he felt at peace. He felt free of the burdens that his old life had placed on him. He took a breath from under his hood, and it felt like the first breath he had taken in his life.

That gazette is really cool!
I hope I didnt overdo it on the "Backstory" of my character.
I tried relatively hard to have hooks that are highly flexible for GM use, and that will very likely require the party to resolve (to prevent "solo adventure sessions" mid adventure which imho often break up the flow), and ideally also provide the party with possible motivations to resolve them.
It would be my first play by post, so I have obviously no idea if I am succeeding :)

Considering there are four applications for stranger and only one for Ward, I'll probably change mine from Stranger to Ward and make the alteration I included at the start of the PM. Unless you would like everything to remain locked as first sent, GM.
I'll look at it a bit and re-send it after.
I’m sure the Sir Eustus’ Ward applicant would rather I lock it in, but I’ve allowed others to switch roles so I can’t say no now.
If folks could have everything locked up in the next 31 hours, that would be great. I expect to announce a party Sunday or Monday and then give folks a few days to actually build the characters if they haven’t already. I’ll be away camping with my kids Tuesday to Thursday but I think there’s cell service so I should be able to check in on builds during that time.
Also, if it helps folks feel less nervous about the application, I’ve put a lot of effort into the prep for this game to just use it once, so I will most likely run a second table of this game once the first group has gotten a considerable head start. So if you’d like to be part of the second group, don’t read along with the first one!

Giant Halfling |

I agree, all the campaign info is fantastic. I have to admit that I've been so busy I haven't finished reading it yet, but I'm looking forward to doing so.
Also I submitted [redacted], a [redacted] [redacted], for consideration as [redacted] by PM as instructed. Please let me know if there's anything else I need to do. (And good luck with selection, that's always hard!)

Nazard |

Okay folks. I’ve been playing around with different combinations and ruminating of different ways of tying together different back stories for the past few hours, so I’m ready to post a party list. Thank you to everybody who submitted as I know it was a lot of work and a lot of reading. I will most likely open up a parallel version of this campaign sometime in the not-too-distant-future, and will PM anybody who wasn’t selected this go around.
Could the following folks please report to the discussion thread:
Robert MacIntyre
Maria Kerrelian
Fezzan
Eudamonia Solanis
Gunnarson

Nazard |

So I am planning to run a second and independent table of this home brew game. I currently have three PCs from the original thread interested in joining:
Varian, the Pride of Lyon’s Brook
Grahm, Sir Eustus’ Ward
Kieran, Stranger in Town
So I need submissions for a Black Sheep and an Average Joe. As per the original application instructions, please submit character ideas via PM (though it helps me if you then pop on here to say an application was sent). I’ll choose one for each role on Nov. 5th (doesn’t need to be started by then), unless I need to extend it longer to get enough bites.
I did change the original creation criteria for Black Sheep to allow for any class except paladin. It would probably also be difficult to create a cleric of a respected god like Iomedae or Erastil for such a role.

Chiming in here as the player for the life oracle on the upcoming table, the setting and detail of the town here really impressed me! Every single inhabitant of the village has their own background entry, and there are quite many (over a hundred). Personally, I'm really curious to see where this goes, and the idea of keeping it more small scale based around said small village feels fresh to me after all the super epic battles and journeys.
Side note, I like the classes for group 2 thusfar too. I know the adventure would be changed to account for the groups abilities, but fighter, bard and life oracle sounds like a solid foundation that covers all the classic roles reasonably well and offers lots of freedom for other applicants too.

Nazard |

I put in an application for the Average Joe. I sent the idea by PM. Should I send a full built character to review?
Not the character build, but a more elaborate background. I replied with an outline of the ten-minute background method. My process at this stage is to get an idea how your character fits into the rest of Lyon’s Brook and find details of backstory to mine for plot hooks.
At the top of the thread are some links. One of them is the Rogue’s Gallery and another are maps of the town and surrounding area. Feel free to incorporate some of that stuff into your background. You could add yourself to an existing family or create your own (or maybe he’s an orphan).
