The crazy-eyed youth quickly turns his red face in the dwarf's direction. More red than blue tired eyes blink back the fuzzy scene of 4 dwarves and 4 Lilys; both scowling at his direction.
He belches.

I may be drunk.

Abel attempts to advance his vertical position; only to be so totally humbled by gravity!
Sitting slumped on the deck, leaning now on his safe coil of rope, the youth smiles up at the throng of dwarves and 1/2 orc females with pissed off facial expressions.
Bummer party, eh?

Once talk of making friends floated to his eager ears, Abel determinedly stands. He wobbles a bit in the group's more general direction. Keeping an eye on those disapproving dwarves and 1/2 orc females, the Wizard pronounces...

...well whatever the poor sorry sap was about to say seemed lost to antiquity once the vomiting began!
Abel was successful in his aim of inside his safe coil of rope!
His echoed voice carries out to the group's ears.
I may have imbibed a bit of alcohol; of which, I am not too familiar with.

The muffled sounds of strange words escape a bit from the coil of rope. Abel (not a drop of vomit, dirt, blood, snot on him) rises from his self-imposed exile to confidently faced the group.
Much better. Now, we were speaking about the possibilty of making friends. I made some progress with Aretta Bansion a Swab; although she will still need persuading.

So my thoughts on this.
One, we bear with it, while we see where the crew sits, and try to get them to our side.
two, when that is done, we can institute a change of command.

Nothing to worry about, my good dwarf. Look for yourself.

Well, it is looking like we will have the time. I am thinking that if we can get by without be keelhauled; perhaps...

It was fun while it lasted. While she felt more comfortable with the crew after her drink, the consequences of her actions hit her hard soon afterwards. By the time the hangover hit, she was ready to head in. She nodded to Sandara in a small thanks before putting her kit in the chest closest to her quarters. Afterwards, she entered her cabin... and saw that there were only two beds. She turned her head back and forth between Kroop and Grok before finally settling on an answer.

"I can sleep on the floor. I'll just need a bed and blankets."

This isn't for much of a conversation as much as to establish where she would sleep.

Day 1: Swab!

Profession Sailor: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

When the duties of the day was called out, Brunhild's day was immediately ruined. Swab work. She had hoped that she had proven herself worthy enough the day before, but now she was being given busy work while Ming had been chosen to work on repairs. Being passed over stung, but she held her tongue. She would have time to prove herself. So she kept her mouth shut and dutifully hauled rope. Given that at her parent's business it usually fell on her to do the brute force work that nobody else wanted to do, it came easily enough for her. And once the rope was hauled, she sat and went about knotting with skilled hands.

Influence Cog: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

As she worked she began to chant. It was a habit picked up from long hours working alongside her clansmen, in that when hours of work was needed, sagas of old would be chanted to pass the time and keep the rhythm. Without giving it any thought, she went about repeating the words of the saga entitled 'The Wrath of King Valthyr'

"...In swelling rage | then rose up King Valthyr,--
Seldom he sits | when he such things hears,--
And the oaths were made, | the words and bonds,
The mighty pledges | between them made.
I know of the horn | in temple, hidden
Under the deep-reaching | holy rock;
On it there sounds | with Valthyr's pledge
A mighty blast: | would you hear?
On all sides saw I | dwarves assemble,
Ready to march | to battle the orcs;
Skuld bore the banner, | and Skogul marched next,
Guth, Hild, Gondul, | and Geirskogul.
Of Herjan's chosen | the list have ye heard,
Hearthguard ready | to march o'er the earth..."

Noticing Cog looking at her she stopped. "Old working habit." She explained, simply. "Fixing broken ships takes many an hour and it passes the time. They flog for such? Seems like near anythin' will get them to draw blood here."

The chant:

Didn't make it up myself. Was lifted and modified from the prose edda. Figured that viking poems would be the closest to dwarven sagas

Ellie wakes an hour early to pray to her god and weave a few spells, not that she's likely to need them here. Still, her ability to do so now that she has a holy symbol is a comfort. Once finished, she drags herself out of her sleeping cot and up the stairs to the main deck. She chokes down the biscuits and gravy, actually not as bad as it could've been but still not great.

"The bilges?" She had worked hard the previous day; why does she deserve this? Then again... Upon learning that Scrimshaw will be there as well, she decides there are worse punishments.

Fresh biscuits or hardtack biscuits? I'm betting hardtack . . ..

Terry takes the time to get as much gravy on and in the biscuits as he can to help soften them up as he eats. He does his best to get every crumb and drop that he can, expecting he'll want the energy before they day is done.

Day 1: Rigger

Repairing the rigging is less physically demanding than the monkey work, but far more tedious, unrelenting, and exacting. But it is familiar work, so Terry gets to it, not wanting to be the next example . . ..

Based on Lilly's earlier Rigging Repair, the DC is 10 Profession (Sailor) or a simple Dexterity check.

Profession Sailor w/ work normally: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 You've gotta be kidding me!

Apparently, Terry got too involved in the conversation and slacked off pretty badly on his work . . ..

The Bilge is a foul damp place with thick cobwebs above and 1 foot of daek brackish water that sticnks abominably below. A ladder leads up to the crew deck, and you know that many of the crew have come down here to relieve themselves during the crew time and evening. A single bilge pump is set near the stern and manning the pump is just one of the jobs in the bilge. scopping buckets of foul sewage and taking it to throw overboard is another, and scraping and cleaning the mast jutting up through the decks another. 6 pair of manacles are attached to the mast attesting to the use of the bilge as the brig.

Throughout the morning, Ellie throws out small comments to try and start a conversation with Badger-- "Hey, I think you got a bigger bucket than me," or "So when does the food get better?" All she gets for her efforts, though, is the occasional snarl. Finally she tries a more direct "Sorry, my name's Ellie and I just want to--" but she's cut off by his angry rant. She blinks, taken aback that he would be so directly hostile to crewmates. She had dared to hope that perhaps there would be a sort of comeraderie among the other swabs, even those who were not pressganged. Clearly she'd been mistaken.

Dice gods, why are you so cruel?

She could only imagine how bad the bilge could be, and reality blew all expectations. It much fortitude not to retch up in the place at the spot. Yet she was willing to put up the necessary work so that she could get out of this dump.

And then she was with them.

When Badger mentioned her time at he Formidably Maid, she slowly looked over to Ellie while staring at her in a way that screamed 'don't you ever talk to me about that' and then she focused all her strength at the task at hand.

I think the GM was just waiting on all of our responses, which happened just now. Shouldn't be long now.

The Bell rang 3 times ending the work day. Everyone gradually made their way to the main deck.

Brunhilde had made headway with Cog, at lease he wasnt angry any longer he didnt seem to care one way or the other....and she had fallen easily into the work of hauling rope around.. It was tedious labor, but somewhat out of the limelight.

She arrived up top and cog moved to stand by Syl, but didnt scowl at Brunhild like he had in the beginning of the day.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Abel had spent the day learning how to tie knots. His agile mind adapted to the task easily, and he ended the day tired but with some satisfaction that he would be on Scourges s~!! list. However he had made no headway with Shivakh who was a foul angry Mwangi woman. He had noticed though that Tilly didnt bear the grudges that Shivakh had. He found out she was a Barmaid who had been pressganged by Scourge same time as Aretta. They had been at the same bar, and only Tilly walking outside into the alley at the wrong time got her shanghaid.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Terry, has a rough day adaptting to the knots used by the crew...some are not what hes accustomed to, and coupled with trying to repair rigging in the air while the ship is sailing is cumbersome and he botches his work several times....though maybe its because he spent more time chatting up Barefoot Samms, as she was called. An interesting plain looking woman with an easy going charm. It turns out shes been on board the ship close to a month. She was out fishing, when the pirates grabbed her off the fishing boat killing the rest of the crew, when they fought back. She had surrendered right away, not having much in the way of fighting skills...but she could work nets and rope...so as a Rigger she adapted easily. She found it easier to climb barefooted and stayed that way all the time so as to keep her callouses strong. At the end of the day Terry could tell she was friendly to him. as she had opened up quite a bit. Seems she was one of the first pressganged....when the ship only had Captain Harrigan, Peppery Longfarthing, The Stitchman, Riaris, and Patch up in Cheliax. It was strange because they had come onto the fishing boat on a jolly boat. The Wormword was tied up at a wharf in Corentym. As for working in close proximity to Riaris, he found the woman watched them keenly and kept the two strange wands always at the ready.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ellie scrapes barnacles, sifts through fetid water, dumps sewage with the best of them and she ignores Badgers taunts. while she focus' on what she can find out about the Bilge. There are a number of discarded broken crates and barrels and some bundles of straw. occasionally she feels something metallic beneath the water but because Badger is always watching she dare not check to see what it is...but she is certain theres a lot of gear here that could be easily taken if she could get down here alone. At one point when Badger was doing something to the pump she grabbed up a bottle with a cork in it, that was empty except two tinder twigs. After removing the tinder twigs and tucking them into her belt she put the bottle back in the crate. throughout the day Scrimshaw talked with her about his past and he seemed interested in her...

what she gets: 1d10 ⇒ 9

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Destinie had to fend off hostile badger more than she liked. and her day was fairly miserable because she just couldnt make the pump move. which brought about much laughter from Badger who started calling her Girlie.. She did manage to avoid being worn out when the day ended....they stunk to high heaven when they made their way up to the main deck. Scrimshaw said that the way the pirates typically bathed was to take a rope and go over the side of the ship to dip into the ocean briefly then hang onto the side while they soaped up and then dipped again and climbed back up the rope. Its also how they would relieve themselves. hang over the edge of the ships rails with a rope...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Seadreamer has a miserable day with Fipps taunting him trying to get him into a fight every chance he can under the watchful eyes of Patch, Scourges right hand gnome...He does a good job of grabbing up beetles, and roaches and finds one rat. so noone can say he didnt do his job. he looks around a lot on the crew deck as he hunts vermin and finds that Jape, Badger, Patch, and Kipper...the Gunners Mate, all have small chest for their personal belongings in this area that is pretty dark....

How to Tie a Square Knot:
You can tie a solid square knot by lapping one rope right over left, then underneath the other, and then tying the same again in the reverse direction—left over right and then underneath. You’ll know you did it right when the working end and standing end of each rope is side by side (not making a “cross” like a granny knot).

What the f!~& is a granny knot now!

Abel repeatedly repeats the instructions that Shivakh mumbled once to him; while, Tilly actually performed for him a few times this morning.
The Wizard was a quick learner, although, after 9 hours of tying, untying, knots; the scholars nimble fingers were showing signs of mistreatment.
I used to get papercuts often, but, I am thinking this is worse.

After their time was called for end of the work day, Abel gratefully (but fatigued once again!) made his way up to the main deck along with the others for chow and rum and blood.
I wonder if perhaps we could just have poetry hour instead?

Sorry, I've kinda been waiting for a more formal calling out, I guess I shouldn't have.

Terry frowns as he's called forth for Bloody Hour, but he moves up, knowing the pain won't really be avoidable, but there will be extra if he doesn't cooperate. He waits to see what they have in store for him, reconsidering his choice to try to make friends instead of focus on the task at hand.

"It's aquan. Language of the sea." Brunhild called out, and then repeated the sentence in said language. "Just a language like any other." She hoped that it would help sway public opinion. It would not do for both Terry and Destinie both to be brutally punished for just speaking a language...

Once Terry and Destinie are standing before SCourge and Plugg. The First Mate says Well Quint. Thought you had experience. Ye looked like a Swab up there today. Granted Barefoot is fair to look at. if yu dont want to see the whip, ye better start doin yur job..ye got me?

on the side, Barefoot Samms blushed and looked away.

Fipps said ahh aint that cute

The Scourge who was standing next to Plugg heard Terry then Brunhild come to her defense...he said Well well well we have a girlie who can talk to fishes. should we start callin ye Aqua-Girl?....Since ye two think she needs to be helped...ye can help with her punishment Ye gots me? The two of ye get over here...Quint, Carpenter Dwarf, take yur place beside her. not each of you face the mast. Jape? Bring me the rope. I need to do some bashin.

Jape went and grabbed a 3 foot length of rope that had been put to the flame with wax on the end of it. So it was hard and fused together for about 6 inches.

Badger come help me.

The foul smelling Badger came forward and tore the shirts on Terry, Brunhild and Destinie baring their backs from the shoulder to the the waist.

He came up and whispered to Destinie, leaning into speak directly into her ear.. Ye get 1 bash fur failin to do the job on yur second time. 1bash fur speaking to fishes. and 1 cause I think yu was mouthin off. Ye ready Aqua-girlie?

He pulled the rope back and swung it hard and it made a meaty *thwap* against her fair skin, leaving behind a foot and a half welt of reddened skin. Once more he pulled back and *thwap* this time a trickle of blood ran from where the two welts intersected. A third time he struck...and it was extremely painful.

Now he turned to Terry and handed the rope to Mister Plugg. Hes onea yurs Mister Plugg. Whoe walked forward and took the rope and swung it...then pulled back at the last minute so it barely touched Terry and he said. Sos yu know whos the boss here. I spare you the Bash. Dont speak up for her again, or anyone else...or the 2 bashes youd have gotten today, will be added to that day...with interest.

The to he handed the the rope back to Master Scourge...who walked up to Brunhilde and leaned over saying I dont like you Brunny. I think yur a troublemaker. I think you should keep yur mout shut savvy? ...Nows yu get two bashes ...tody. 1 fur thinkin yu have da right to speak up. 1 fur defending someone gettin the right duly punishment....

two rope bashes later that hurt like the dickins and bled a tiny bit.

The First Mate then reported to the Captain who turned and said Dinner time Mister Plugg the answer came back Aye Aye Capn

Brunhild kept her mouth shut as she marched her way to the front, and even managed to keep an even face as her shirt was whipped. Hearing the lashes that came before her made the wait even worse. When it came to her turn she was steeped by her sudden rush of hatred for the man. To humiliate a shipwright like this! She was of half a mind to scuttle the ship at the first opportunity. See how they liked it if she could work some hidden flaw into her repairs. Thoughts of revenge against the traitorous kinsman who brought her here and her newest tormentor got her through the lashings. Once done she pulled her shirt back up as best she could and marched off towards dinner. Not looking at anyone, she went right for the rum. As horrid as it was, at least it was alcohol.

In yet another odd twist to her, the female dwarf seemed to understand her as well, even speaking some of the word that she knew about. Not that it seemed to have helped her as her back was exposed for punishment. She gasped at each strike directed at her, with the third dropping her to her hand and knees. It was only when Bloody Hour was over that her eyes cleared and she felt normal again. She slowly got back up and looked at the crowd. Judging by the snickering, it felt so embarrassing. And with that she scurried down towards dinner.

This time around, the drink only seemed to make her feel worse, giving her a coughing fit that took a while for her to stop. Part of her wished she could have just been left alone. Yet another part realized that the pirate cleric had a point. Her best chance of survival was to make friends. And friends needed to trust each other. She made the conscious decision to walk over towards the group plus Sandara. moving behind Brunhild before speaking.

"You must be wondering what happened there. I can explain. But you must hold still first." She placed her hand softly on the dwarf's wounded back and chanted in the same language Brunhild and Terry was familiar.

Casting Cure Light Wounds on Brunhild and myself. This should heal us up to full."

After she did the same to her back, she sat down and told her own tail. "I've been able to heal people for the past few years, but a couple of years ago I started to get seizures every time I get nervous or get in a fight. When I went into a temple, they said I was touched by one of the gods as their oracle. Just not sure who..."

Fatigue: 1d8 ⇒ 2

She had to use the table just to steady herself. "Whoever caused this, I get so shaken I can only speak in one language under some sort of trance, and everything I hear sounds like gibberish. At least that's what I thought before I heard you say it..." She pointed to Brunhild. "Aquan. Who speaks something like that?"
