You find yourselves aboard a ship bound from Absalom to Sedeq, in Qadira. In your pocket is a copy of a letter from Esmayl ibn Qaradi (see slide 6), the Venture-Captain of Katheer. You have a few days of free time as you sail, and have a chance to get to know your fellow agents, each of whom received a copy of the same letter.

Please introduce yourself in character, and please make sure your character profile includes your trained skills.

Arrus is a mid sized Taldan man in his mid 30d with a well manicured but short beard. His gear is made from fine but well worn leathers, clearly acquired by somebody who apricates both style and substance.

"Greetings fellow Pathfinders" says Arrus with a grin, clearly enjoying the salt air of the high seas. "I'm Arrus Lionious, trips like this always take me back to my time with the Taldan navy in my youth."

A stout man of obvious Varisian heritage sits on a barrel beside the rigging. His head is wrapped in a turban stitched with various arcane sigils; similar runes are stamped all over his flesh, seemingly part tattoo, part scar. He drums his fingers along the length of a gray staff, its end topped with knob resembling a brain.

He nods to Arrus, the gesture accenting the bags under his eyes and revealing the tiny golden nodule orbiting his head. "Salutations. This is a far throw from my usual scholarship. I'm usually called in to tackle forays into Thassilon or excavations sites with old Runelord sigils. Must be a desperate situation."

Wearing explorer clothes that are maybe a little too big and a pair of glasses that give him a dorky look, this half-orc has a darker skin tone close to the Mwangi ethnicity. When Arrus introduce himself, the half-orc is reading the letter again.

"Sorry." He says as an introduction."Greeting to you too also. I am Omble Defontaine from Sandpoint. Yes, this must be a desperate situation if they called a group from Absalom.

Anyway, this is an occasion for our explore and report this mysterious palace and the Quadirian wonderous cultural artefact and creature that are inside."

It was a very good idea, 5 years ago, to stop working at producing copys of the Pathfinder Chronicles and to have started field agent training. I am actually being part of those chronicles now.

Dad, sending me this letter was the best thing you could have done for me.

Arrus politely looks over Rextangalin's wares "Quite a collection you've got there, never been one to give up on a chance to be better prepared if kind sir has any extra bombs available. Not much to give back I'm afraid other than killing monsters just a tad bit faster unless you're short a few bolts."

As you travel, you have time to discuss what you know of Corvius Vayn, Sedeq, and his palace there. Most of you have heard of the man, and know of his immense wealth and political power in the region. He's particularly well connected to the slave trade, and is notorious for the many genies he keeps under his power. The city guard are unlikely to want to enter his property, regardless of the current circumstances, for fear of these servants. Bardok has also heard of Vayn's reputation for frivolity with these bound genies. He delights in using them to entertain his friends and guests with wishes and illusions, and uses both genies and geniekin as personal servants.

Being a well educated party, you all know something of genies as well. You know they are powerful creatures that often rule massive kingdoms in the elemental planes. Spellcasters such as Vayn conjure and bind these genies to leverage their magical power, particularly the notorious power of noble genies to grant wishes. The wishes are dangerous, however, and must be phrased precisely, lest they be twisted by a vengeful genie. Rextangalin and Arrus know that this servitude is abhorrent to genies. Though they may respect the power of the one who bound them, they never serve willingly. A genie who detects weakness will seize any opportunity to punish and destroy the one who would control them.

You receive a note from a veteran Pathfinder named Jiyoki Tenma, sharing her experience with Corvius Vayn. In it, she advises you to seek out his servant Murad, who has previously aided the Society, if you need assistance while inside the estate.

-----

Once your ship makes port in Sedeq and you are cleared to come ashore, you can easily find your way to Vayn's estate. Once there, you find the manor grounds surrounded by a boisterous crowd held in check by memebers of the city guard. Some seem worried, nervously shouting questions about missing loved ones to the guard, while others seem to be curious onlookers or spiteful rivals.

Canvasing the crowd as you pass through, you learn that the trouble began about three weeks ago. Since then, the crowd reports frequent flashes of light in various colors and bizarre noises, which you recognize based on their descriptions as energy leaking directly from the Elemental Planes. They also describe small, winged creatures of various colors, flitting about and fighting amongst themselves, which you recognize as mephits and small elementals.

Arriving at the front of the crowd, you come face to face with the woman who seems to be in charge of the guard detachment keeping the crowd in check. When you introduce yourselves as Pathfinders sent to help, she visibly relaxes. "Thank the gods you've arrived; the crowd grows bigger every day, and we're no closer to resolving this crisis. I'm Commander Suada Al-Sabri; I'm in charge here, as much as anyone can claim to be from this side of the fence. I'm happy to share whatever information I can before you go in."

Tall stone walls with an iron gate surround the Vayn estate. Within, fruit trees, flowers, and fountains fill the grounds. Manicured stone paths lead to the house and to each individual outdoor area. There are gazebos of various sizes, a stream, and a large fish pond. The manor itself is two stories tall and made from red adobe bricks. Windows of various sizes dot the walls, along with balconies small and large. The manor has a disjointed silhouette, as if the architect attempted to fill a single building with the dominant feature of every palace and castle they had ever seen, each now fighting with each other to be the focal point of the finished estate. A pair of ornate stone staircases guide the way to the manor’s main entrance.

As you approach the entrance, the doors suddenly burst open! Hundreds of small, winged creatures burst forth, screeching and flapping their wings. Gusts of different elemental energies arc away from and between the creatures. On the other side of the door, the foyer of the Vayn estate is in complete disarray. Glowing cracks in the fabric of reality fracture the walls and floor, leaking flame, water, and electricity into the space.

Rex manages to just wing one bomb in through the open doorway, impacting the mephits inside and splashing out onto the other ones. He then quickly mixes up another and throws it at the swarm just outside the door. Both hit. Looks like 1 acid, 3 total splash, and 2d6 persist acid on number 2 (before including weakness for each strike), 3 cold, 3 total splash, and a penalty to speed on number 1 (before including weakness). Bardok, meanwhile, calls forth a burst of sound to further scatter the creatures.

Omble successfully strikes the mephit swarm, cutting down a few of the creatures. Though the fallen creatures lie bleeding on the ground, the swarm as a whole seems immune to his more potent effects (immune to bleed and precision, as you suspected; it also resisted some of the damage).

The swarm near the doorway surges forward, hampered by the frost still clinging to many of the mephits. Acting almost as one, they belch out a burst of mixed energy that washes over both Rex and the swarm that envelops him!

Bardok takes a small vial from his bag. This minor potion won’t do me much good against these kinds of foes. Might as well put it to work now. He uncorks it and downs its contents, then looks to Arrus. ”Seems like the thing to do, if we’re all bandaged up. Would we benefit from some group invisibility or telepathy before proceeding?”
