I'm going to assume that one or both of blue and purple are down.

Chance utters a strained yelp at the enormous spiders' attack and changes his tune yet again.

"We need to KILL 'EM!
Kill 'em now!
Let's squash these foul arachnids
Before they web us all up tight!"

With each line, the gnome sings faster, his voice getting higher and more ragged. Finally, he opens his mouth wide to scream, but his friends cannot make out any audible sound. The red, orange, and yellow spiders, on the other hand, hear him clearly (see light gray spell template for 10' burst).

My intention was that I would roll it for you, but I’ll let you keep that Fort roll (meaning that you’re no longer poisoned).

Jisara arcs electricity between two of the spiders.

Basic Reflex:
Blue: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
Orange: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19

Vitalis slashes at the spiders, slicing Blue in two and annihilating Purple after two hits!

Chance begins singing and lets loose a sonic burst right on top of most of the spiders!

Basic Fort:
Red: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Orange: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Yellow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

The concussive sounds causes two of the spiders (Orange and Yellow) to completely explode!

Botting Stargazer: Stargazer Steps over and casts chill touch on Red.

Negative Damage: 2d4 + 4 ⇒ (1, 4) + 4 = 9
Red basic Fort: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24

Red bites at Vitalis!

Jisara arcs electricity between the two remaining spiders.

Basic Reflex:
Red: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
Green: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Which causes one of the spiders to explode! Vitalis then slices at the remaining spider and knocks it down!

Healing Stuff:
Vitalis casts lay on hands on Stargazer, then spends ten minutes Refocusing.

Nature 13:
The massive “spider” exhibit in this room is actually stitched together from giant beetle legs and lacquered coyote fur.

Since everyone is trained in Religion: The dead body is indeed that of an Asmodean priest. He still has his silver holy symbol, a scroll of heal and fear, and a +1 mace. Inventory Updated Clutched in one hand is a gold-painted keychain that says “Hocum’s Fantasmagorium.” The keychain is largely worthless.

To the “East”

GM Screen:
4d20 ⇒ (1, 12, 1, 3) = 17

A circular alcove off this hallway cradles a lovingly maintained statue of a regal man, his arms outstretched and his chest adorned with a carving of a winged eye. Empty picture frames line the walls.

Religion 12:
The statue is a depiction of the god Aroden.

To the “East”

Wax replicas of various politicians, folk heroes, deities, and creatures fill this room, some laughably fake and others eerily lifelike. One in particular stands out—a depiction of a man dressed in bloodstained professor’s robes. This figure wields a bloody surgeon’s knife in one hand, but its face has been melted away into an unrecognizable waxen mess save for a single glaring eye. The defaced statue bears a plaque that’s inscribed as follows: Professor Alander Mangvhune—The Temple Hill Slasher

To the “South”

This series of open galleries may have once held numerous paintings and other objects of curiosity in several glass cases, but today the displays are all empty. Map Updated What’s more pertinent, though, is the group of literal zombies that were loitering in the next room that start advancing toward the PCs as soon as they see them!

Chance:
For the sake of expediency I’m going to say that you cast inspire courage first; you’ll see why that matters.
These are…well, zombies. Zombies are fairly generic, but variable, creatures—some have their limbs move after they’ve been cut off, others cause existing wounds to fester, and some are disturbingly fast. Nevertheless, all zombies share a few traits: they are almost always mindless, are slow they are constantly slowed 1, are ridiculously hardy, and are especially vulnerable to positive energy and slashing damage.

However, as Chance analyzes the zombies he sees something in one of them specifically Green: A familiarity amid rotting flesh and unholy shouting coming from this zombie halfling. He doesn’t want to believe it, but it is right before him: one of these zombies is Zamir. Chance is fascinated with Green until the end of Chance’s next turn; this fascination does not end when Green is destroyed, nor does it end from hostile actions being used against your allies (it does end from hostile actions being used against you, though). I will remind you that inspire courage DOES have the concentrate trait since it has a verbal component.

For the sake of clarity, all of these zombies are permanently slowed 1, so they only have two actions per turn.

The zombies shamble forward toward their prey—unfortunately, only two of them are close enough to also get an attack off.

Green Target: 1 is Vitalis, 2 is Stargazer: 1d2 ⇒ 2

At the start of Stargazer’s turn: As the vigilante begins to move, the wound he suffered from the zombie’s attack begins to suddenly grow worse as it festers uncontrollably and painfully!

To the West

Vitalis looks over the unfortunate priest. "An Asmodean? What interest do they have in this place? I doubt they are here for any of these knock-off exhibits. The must think there is something of value in the Many-Steps Monastery below. But on whose behalf? The church? Or perhaps Barzillai Thrune himself?"

Does Barzillai Thrune have any official position within to church? I could make a religion check +5 if needed.

"This fellow didn't fare so well. I'm going to guess the undead are theirs but these spiders were an exhibit gone rogue. That his body was left here alone tells me one of two things. Either his allies chose to leave him to his fate and left the body there or he was exploring alone and hasn't been discovered yet."

"If Asmodeans are about, that doesn't bid well for Rexus' mother. If she's here, I pray to Shelyn she has a secure hiding place and that we aren't too late."

To the East

Religion DC 12: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

"This is a statue of the god Aroden. His death and disappearance is quiet the controversy. This may be the first thing of actual artistic value that we've come across." Vitalis takes a moment to look over the statue and take in its beauty.

To the Next East

"Does anyone else find it odd that only this one figure in particular was defaced? I don't recognize that name but I think I'll inquire about it once we're done here." Vitalis removes the plaque from the statue and sticks it in his backpack. If it is possible to remove that is. I have a crowbar to pry it off if needed. "I'm forbidden from destroying art, but there is nothing stated about art that is already destroyed. I doubt anyone will miss this."

To the South

"I'm noticing a lot of empty picture frames and displays. If these priests have turned to the looting of art, that is one more sin that cannot be forgiven."

Damage: 1d8 + 1d6 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + (1) + 4 + 2 = 9

Vitalis slashes twice at the zombie (red) that injured Stargazer. He then lays a hand on Stargazer's shoulder to heal him. His face turns pale upon seeing the festering wound. "That does not look good."

Lay on Hands heals Stargazer 12 hp and gives +2 AC for a round.

(OOC) Responding to Vitalis’s non-combat stuff:
Vitalis Tanessen wrote:

I’m not even going to require a check. The short answer is “yes,” the long answer is “yes, but it’s complicated.”

I went into more detail through Rexus’s words, but Barzillai is an Asmodean. Officially, he is the “Chelish High Inquisitor of Asmodeus,” and the Asmodean Inquisition is, obviously, a church organization, but it also acts as the Chelish secret police and acts outside the social hierarchy because of it. Barzillai’s social standing is a thing of controversy due to the fact that he is a Thrune (the highest non-monarch social status), but openly identifies as an Asmodean (the hierarchy level below the Thrunes), and is the leader of the Asmodean Inquisition (which acts outside the social hierarchy entirely).

Vitalis Tanessen wrote:

The plaque is not worth anything significant other than as scrap metal.

Also, you don’t recognize the name Alander Mangvhune (Jisara does), but you do recognize the name “Temple Hill Slasher.”

Vitalis slices at one of the zombies and easily cuts clean into the creature’s body before following up with slicing the undead in half and causing it to fall to the floor! First attack hit, second one crit (not going to bother rolling the deadly die; it doesn’t matter). The creatures have weakness to slashing and positive, but the weakness doesn’t double and only one weakness applies at a time (so you don’t deal double weakness damage due to dealing both positive and slashing; only the highest weakness applies). Regardless, Red’s destroyed.

Stargazer releases a wave of positive energy which heals himself and harms the undead! Also, Stargazer, your spell DC is 19 now.

Basic Fort:
Yellow: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Green: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
Blue: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26
Pink: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20

All but one of the undead are hit with the positive energy and are suddenly engulfed in the healing fire of the Positive Energy Plane and begin deteriorating quicker! Weakness to positive has been triggered.

Jisara launches a shard of glass that cuts clean through Blue’s shoulder and sends its arm clattering to the ground, though the zombie is still standing! Crit. Also, yeah, the wall blocks line of effect, so you couldn’t do life boost on Stargazer.

Chance throws a dagger, which slices through Green’s chest. The gnome then follows up with magically throwing a shard of glass and making another large cut across the zombie’s chest! Telekinetic projectile has the attack trait, so it’s affected by MAP, meaning your attack roll should be 5 lower. That said, these are zombies, and they have abysmal AC since they barely have the mental capacity to dodge, so the rerolled attack roll will hit (though I will take the first set of damage that you rolled for the telekinetic projectile).

"And let's not forget, one of these was known to Chance as well." he turns to Chance. "What can I do for you, my friend?"

Now that Vitalis takes the time to look at the corpses, he does recognize the two wearing the rings—a man and a woman. It’s been some time since he’s seen them, but they were his neighbors for most of his life: Rexus’s parents, Porcia Victocora and her husband. I don’t believe Rexus’s father is named in the AP; I can’t check right now.

I did a google search for House Victocora and it says their names are Aneran and Porcia.

Vitalis takes a closer look. "Now that my head has cleared a bit, although these bodies pale in comparison to the regality exuded from them in life, I can indeed confirm that they belong to Aneran and Porcia Victocora, Rexus' parents." Vitalis' heart is filled with anger and sadness. "Whoever is responsible for this abhorrent act will find justice at the end of my glaive."

"It is truly unfortunate that we were forced to further desecrate their bodies by mutilating them in our self defense. When we are done clearing this place, we should do our best to make the bodies presentable and prepare a proper funeral for them. It is the least we can do."

Again, I’m away from my computer, so I can’t properly advance things to the next area of note in the Fantasmagorium, but I can deal with healing right now.

Healing:
Stargazer is fully healed from the fast healing from life boost

Jisara and Vitalis spend 10 minutes Refocusing. They then cast life boost and lay on hands on Vitalis (healing 28 HP).

Jisara and Vitalis spend 10 minutes Refocusing. Vitalis then casts lay on hands on himself (Vitalis is at full HP again).

Vitalis spends 10 minutes Refocusing.

Note: due to how Focus Points work, Vitalis now only has 1 Focus Point in his Focus Pool, as he can only regain one point at a time (since he cast a focus spell twice in that last combat, he effectively reduced his maximum Focus Point total by 1 until he makes his daily preparations again).

Once Chance is certain that Stargazer is healing and that Vitalis is healing with Jisara’s assistance, he sighs and sits down next to Zamir’s corpse. “Thank you, Vitalis. I think... I don’t know.” He takes a deep breath, and then another. [b]“Zamir was the friendliest person I ever met. Also the most confident. He told me that he and his brother had a friendly rivalry about which of them was the finest swordsman on or around the Inner Sea; it never occurred to him that it could be neither of them.”

“I was pretty sure that we would find Rexus’s mother’s body here, at least, but I never thought we would find Zamir. He was always very cavalier about the possibility that he would be imprisoned or killed; Cheliax is Cheliax, of course, and Zamir was a halfling in Cheliax to boot. But while he never tried to sugarcoat how bad things are, nothing ever got him down. He insisted that the bigger the enemy was, the easier they would be to trip up. I don't think he ever thought he could be turned into --“ he waves at the corpse ”-- one of these things, though.”

He pats Zamir's shoulder on the least gruesome spot. “Finding him here like this, together with Rexus's parents, we can assume that they were killed because of their work as Silver Ravens, can't we? And if that's true, then we know that not only did they die working for a cause they believed in, whoever did this to them, they did it because of that cause.” He falls silent again, then adds, “Our cause, now.”

He gets up, walks into the other room, and kicks the dead Asmodean priest in the face. When he comes back, he picks up the dagger he threw and wipes it off on the cleanest spot of curtain or carpet (or zombie clothing) that he can find and puts it back in its sheath.

“We should keep looking, shouldn’t we? We still need to find the Many-Steps Monastery, and to figure out who did ... all this. And before anyone asks, yes, that did make me feel better. Zamir would have appreciated it. If I thought we could keep it from rotting, I would drag it back to the Wasp’s Nest and keep it, so I could kick a dead Asmodean priest in the face every morning. But if it starts to stink and the smell gets into the coffee and pastries, Laria will be mad. Also, I can’t risk ruining good coffee and pastries. So anyway, let’s make sure there’s nothing else to see here, and then get moving into the next room.”

Is there anything Chance can figure out about the zombies from an Occultism check? Were they made by spell, ritual, something else, that kind of thing.

Chance is aware that zombies can be created through some occult magic, and that for a zombie to hold any semblance of “self-sustainability,” it would have needed to be created by a ritual such as create undead, rather than through relatively simpler spells such as animate dead, which only sustains the undead’s existence through the concentration of the caster. But such an effort would be costly and require an expert-level knowledge in the occult. Trying to figure out how these zombies were created—whether “naturally”* or through a ritual—is beyond Chance’s capabilities.

*I put “naturally” in quotations because undead are inherently unnatural diversions in the Cycle of Souls, but they nevertheless come about without the direct intervention of a necromancer through intense emotions from the dead soul and other factors.

To the “east”

This room’s shelves and displays seem more akin to those one would find in a storefront than a museum. While the shelves are relatively empty, what rubbish remains on them further supports the conclusion that this was once some sort of shop. Four long tables in the middle of the room seem to have seen more recent use, their surfaces cluttered with papers and objects. Map Updated

In this room are several individuals: Tieflings that wear clothing that is rather simple save for a large embellishment of the Cross of Cheliax across them. The tieflings are all examining various documents, manuscripts, codices, and so forth. As soon as the PCs come into view, though, they literally drop everything—document pages scattering everywhere and codices hitting the ground with a thump—as they immediately go on the offensive!

”That’s it!”

Suddenly the doors to the “north” burst wide open to reveal a red-haired human man wearing a breastplate bedecked with the pentagram of Asmodeus across it.

”If I have to hear you damn Hellspawn one more time—!" The Asmodean stops short and points straight at Vitalis and Stargazer. ”Who in the nine Hells are you?! You’re not supposed…” He suddenly stops and repeats what he was about to say slowly as a grin spreads across his face. ”You’re not supposed to be here! Great is Asmodeus!”

The Asmodean then incants some magic and slaps his hand on the large metal mace at his hip. The incantation sounds familiar to Jisara. Jisara doesn’t have line of sight to the Asmodean (she was rolling Stealth for initiative, which is why she’s behind that wall), so she doesn’t automatically know what spell he just cast. I will say, though, that the spell he just cast is among the spells Jisara currently has prepared, I’m just not going to say which one.

The Asmodean points to Vitalis and I believe we’ve established that it’s just as obvious that Vitalis is a Shelynite as it is that this guy is an Asmodean and shouts to the tieflings ”The Shelynite’s the threat! Get him!”

Yellow advances forward straight in front of Vitalis and lets loose a loud kiai look it up which causes their body to become surrounded in divine energy! The tiefling then follows up with a swift punch and kick at the paladin!

Vitalis raises a sidelong eyebrow at the Asmodean throwing a tantrum after the spell washes over himself harmlessly and decides to egg the cleric on further. "That's okay buddy. Not everyone can perform on command. But don't give up. If your blinded subordinates can land a hit, there's still hope for you too."

Glaive: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Crit?: 1d8 + 14 ⇒ (8) + 14 = 22 If this was a crit., 22 damage and I'll knock the enemy 5 ft. east away from Vitalis.

Glaive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Vitalis moves up to next to Chance and slams his glaive into the dazzled tiefling (yellow) throwing him backwards. While the tiefling is regaining his footing, Vitalis's glaive comes around for a second strike.

Vitalis stands as a shining bulwark in the center of the room. "Bask in the glory of Shelyn's embrace. And repent against the folly of serving Asmodeus' will that you may yet be saved."

"Hey, Jisara, take it easy with those books! We might want to read them ..." Chance blinks out of sight, then reappears and takes a glancing blow from the blinded green monk. "... later. Ow! Never mind, they're probably boring anyway."

Chance turns to the Asmodean and a manic grin spreads across his face.

"He can't take it
This is getting silly
He's got no magical ability
Or if he does, it's not hurting me or you

He's faking it, it's time to admit it
This priest is kind of an idiot
Shout and whine, there's nothing he can really do
No, so...

He wants to run away
Run away from me and you
Yeah, he wants to run away
And start again in someplace new."

"Vitalis, are you healed up enough to, I don't know, go redeem that jerk's head off? He looks like he really needs it."

Chance tries to blink the floating spots from his eyes. "We've got these... accountants, or whatever they're supposed to be."

The gnome opens his mouth wide as though to scream, but the only sound the Ravens can hear is a faint shout coming from across the room.

Jisara throws a book but misses. Going to say that due to the wall between you and Yellow that Yellow has greater cover against your attack, so that’s a miss.

Vitalis cuts down one of the tieflings and slices once more at another one. First attack was indeed a crit and would down Yellow; redirecting the second attack to Green.

The Asmodean looks agape at the paladin. ”How dare you!” ↻ Swear Vengeance vs Vitalis.

Chance sings retroactively applying the bonus from inspire courage to Vitalis’s second attack and lets loose a burst of sonic energy.

Green: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15

The Asmodean chimes ”They are members of [kɾidɑk], you short fool!” Good luck with the IPA! (for a less complex pronunciation: kree-DAHK) I’m specifically avoiding spelling out what he’s saying because you guys are only listening to him.

Stargazer sends a bolt of entropy at Red.

The Asmodean glares angrily at Vitalis as he draws his mace. ”How’s this for repentance, you glorified painter!” He rushes at Vitalis and swings his mace! Once again, he rolls twice and takes the higher due to Swear Vengeance.

The Asmodean smacks Vitalis and knocks the paladin completely out! The priest smirks. ”Do not insult the might of the Prince of Darkness.” Though Vitalis will be conscious again due to the life boost

The remaining tiefling blindly advances forward on Chance and lets out a kiai pretty sure you guys have caught on that this is my keyword for them using ki strike and flurries at the gnome before backing away.

Chance yelps when Vitalis falls, then glares at the Asmodean. "Painters should be glorified, you fiend-loving ignoramus! At least the ones with talent! And I don't care your minions are bookkeepers or members of 'Kree-DOCK' or even lawyers, because if they're working for you, then they're IDIOTS!"

The gnome's unnaturally red face turns a deeper shade of scarlet, matching his hair. "Virbovokulo! Flugantaj rokoj por ĵokeoj!"
