What does the famed Sangoro’s Bulwark hold?

You have been summoned to The Nest, the renovated warehouse that serves as the Exo-Guardians’ headquarters on Absalom Station.

You wait with others that arrive for Zigvigix.

Feel free to introduce yourself or just Dot and delete

Hmm. This place does look much more functional than initial expectations. a gangly shirren thinks to himself as he gazes at all the improvements made since he helped clear out the place.

The swaggering space-jock flashes a smile as she enters the room and spots fellow Starfinders. A pair of hip holstered semiautomatics feature mother of pearl grips inlaid with a pair of dice showing the 'one' pips - her matte black armour bears several snake motifs in a slightly lighter shade, giving the whole a mottled camouflage pattern. She seems to have handles of weapons all over her kit in easy to reach locations.

A skittermander dressed in blue and gold regimental uniform enters. A holographic sashimono displays the emblem of the Stewards. She nods at everyone. "Greetings, nufriends. I'm Officer Swizzers, on secondment to the Society. I just got back from a harrowing mission on Icefront!"

Icefront? I've heard the Izalguun have made remarkable strides in biochemical technology. Were you able to see their research first hand? the shirren rushes towards the skittermander, towering over her as he hurriedly broadcasts his questions into her head. A tugging sensation causes him to turn, and he sees a halfling woman trying to hold him back, shaking her head with a frown.

Composing himself, he continues. Apologies. I can sometimes come across as...focused to an impolite level. He extends his mandible. Dyzliit Mshkenka. 'Diz' has been found to be shorter and easier to say for most Pact Worlds and Near Space species. It is nice to meet you Officer Swizzers. Is your genetic material proprietary information, of logged under the Starfinder general codex?

At another disapproving stare from the halfling, Diz adds For tactical purposes and group cohesion of course.

As you are all gathered together, you are shown to one of the meeting rooms. (more like open area with a holo table and mis matched chairs off to the side out of the way of the rest of the activity)

A heavily augmented host shirren gazes out on as crews put the finishing touches on a fully restored warehouse. Their antennae quiver with pride as Starfinders of all walks of life use the extensive training gym, workshop, and recreational facilities. The shirren, Zigvigix, turns away and telepathically greets their guests. “Welcome! Sorry, I was distracted. These renovations were worth the effort!” The shirren leads the way to a conference room and brings up a holographic star chart. “Check this out! This shows the location of—you guessed it—Sangoro’s Bulwark!

The Bulwark was our headquarters until we lost contact with it shortly after the Scoured Stars incident. First Seeker Luwazi restricted us from investigating, since we had suffered extensive losses. But now we know the Bulwark’s location. Some Starfinder agents recovered data from a ship, the Struggle’s Scholar, that fled the fortress. It’s taken a long time, and extensive help from the Dataphiles, but we’ve finally unscrambled the data!

With this new data, we can go back to the Bulwark! Well, not exactly. The main fortress is shrouded in darkness by some unknown force. It sounds neat, but right now it’s annoying! However, the Dataphiles found something fun. Before we lost contact, the Exo-Guardians at the Bulwark moved their most sensitive equipment to the vaults of a nearby satellite facility called the Arsenal. It’s outside the shroud of darkness, so it’s open for business! We can’t mount a massive assault on the Bulwark—the Society can’t afford the negative press, what with the smear campaign going on—but a small mission to take back the Arsenal’s weapons seems wise. We wouldn’t want them falling into the wrong hands.

Zigvigix points to a dim red star on the chart. “There’s a planet, Mazdrun, orbiting this star. That’s our destination. I’ll accompany you to Mazdrun. You’ll explore the Arsenal, learn what information you can, and recover the caches from the lower levels. Got it?

Diz:
Officer Swizzers doesn't seem offended at all by your questions. "Well, I got to meet with an Izalguun elder. A little problem with radiation affecting local flora and fauna. Scary, but everything turned out okay. They have a fascinating culture! Would you like a fur sample? The Stewards have logged my genetic make-up to help clarify any crime-scene investigations I conduct." She's about to continue the conversation when Zigvigix walks in, at which point she snaps to attention.

"Yes sir! May I ask, Venture-Captain, if any information is known about the hostile forces that have taken the Bulwark? Or any automated defense systems we may have to bypass at the Arsenal?"

Hermena nods as Ziggy recaps the hunt for Sangoro's Bulwark. "Yeah, I remember hunting down that derelict ship. If the welcoming committee on Mazdrun is anything like the one on the Struggle's Scholar, we'll need a plan going in."

Hermena has the Chronicle for Cries from the Drift, FYI.

"You said the dark shroud isn't enveloping the Arsenal, but is there any evidence of it making forays towards it? Should we expect undead or other nightcrawlers to be inside?"

Ziggy addresses your questions. "Mazdrun is quiet a nasty place mostly, but the crater containing the Bulwark is somehow protected from all the nastiness. Such a relief!

"As for the shroud, we don't know much. Whatever made it must be powerful! We should avoid the main fortress for now.

Ziggy brightens up when Hermena mentions. "Ah yes, You were. I have seen so many of you that I sometimes forget who went on what missions. But yes that was the ship were we got this information."

"As for what could be there? We don't know. It was a research facility as well as storage. Whatever you will find there it will be interesting!"

A few more things you might remember

Culture or Gather Info DC 5+:

Sangoro was a vesk Starfinder who discovered the Bulwark and gave it to the Society. Many Starfinders distrusted him, as the Pact Worlds were still in conflict with the Veskarium, but he wound up founding the Exo-Guardians faction and became a distinguished Starfinder.

Culture or Gather Info DC10+:

Sangoro’s Bulwark is a massive fortress left behind by a forgotten alien race and the only structure on Mazdrun. The Exo-Guardians kept the planet’s location secret due to the weapon stockpiles in the extensive passages and vaults beneath the fortress.

Culture or Gather Info DC15+:

After Sangoro’s Bulwark fell, no one knew its location— except possibly Guidance, the Society’s amalgam digital consciousness. Guidance ignored all requests to provide the fortress’s location. It has taken the Exo-Guardians and Dataphiles working together for several months to unscramble the data from Struggle’s Scholar and locate the base.

Culture or Gather Info DC20+:

Rumors tell of interplanar anomalies surrounding Mazdrun, and the planet itself is inhospitable. The crater containing Sangoro’s Bulwark somehow maintains a normal atmosphere and is miraculously protected from the planet’s frozen dust storms and radioactive volcanic fallout.

Culture or Gather Info DC25+:

Rumors tell of a battalion of angels stationed at the facility to protect it—or possibly to keep it in check.

Though Zigivix has nothing else to add.

Zigvigix invites you aboard the Thunderous Transgressor. This rusty starship bristles with scanners and laser weapons.

The journey to Mazdrun through the Drift takes 5d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 6, 5, 1) = 20 days. Zigvigix is unusually withdrawn during the trip, preferring to play the vidgame Congruenz and obsessively check the ship’s scanners between levels. They proudly show off their top score in the orb-matching vidgame, but otherwise avoid conversation.

About halfway through, Zigvigix asks “Have you heard about Aballon’s Ice Wells? Venture-Captain Naiaj has been asking for agents to explore these jungles, though it is most likely a bit beneath your skills. It sounds like a good mission for our up and comming agents. But I am so excited that Naiaj as been able to work with the Xenowardends to allow our Society access to these natural wonders.

Once you arrive in system and drop out of the Drift, the Transgresssor approaches Mazdrun. The planet is visible only because of the glowing ash clouds at its poles; the distant red sun is too dim to provide illumination.

Zigvigix comes out of their funk and excitedly points out the planet’s features, insisting that the pilot slow down for a better look. After some time in orbit admiring the planet below, Zigvigix turns back to the party. “Well lets get this show on the road. Well at least ground” With that you bring the ship down to the surface and prepare to investigate.

Oops, sorry missed that the game has started!

Thomagar, or Thom for short, is a brawny lashunta, heavily armored with a shiny mote that orbits him, scintillating from color to color. Other than a starknife hanging from his belt, he carries few other weapons.

He has thus far remained silent, for he is a man of few words. Particularly after taken a rather long hiatus focusing on his sculpturing work that news of the smear campaign against the Society caught him by surprise, he decides it is best to just listen. And observe.

Thom smiles mildly at Ziggy's attempt at joke. "Indeed, we should. As you said, the weapons are too sensitive to fall into the hands of others."

As the Transgressor spends days in the Drift traveling towards Mazdrun, D'zyliit spends much of the first day scouring the infosphere for details about their destination. Was not as aware as I should have been. Scoured Stars incident overshadowed this similar tragedy.

the shirren shares what he learns with his fellow agents during meals and preparations. Facilities positioning should protect from the worst of the environment, but given other unknowns unsure if that is still reliably accurate. Most concerning is records of potential celestial engagement at the bulwark. For them to be overpowered as well is quite ominous.

When they finally begin their descent of the planets, the doctor turns to Ziggy. don't worry. We will secure the armaments and research. As well as any potential survivors inside. To his fellow Starfinders, he asks Swizzers conveniently has profile accessible through public records. Semi-public at least. But I would request a copy of your genetic markers be sent to me. The Arsenal is less than a mile from where you were able to set down. “Best not to linger on the surface,” recommends Ziggy. They point to a beat-up but still very sturdy all-terrain transport. “Bumpy should get you there no problem. Though given some of the issues with the atmosphere, communication will be spotty at best while you drive out there and most likely non-existant when you get to Arsenal.

Gathering your equipment in to the ATV you set out. After a few minutes the entrance comes in to view. The occasional flash of distant lightning throws the shadowy aura surrounding Sangoro’s Bulwark into stark contrast against the planet’s pale surface. Looming towers of stone and metal are barely visible behind the shroud.

You can easily make out a 10 foot ramp leading beneath the surface. Too small for Bumpy, so time to devle.

Walking about a half mile you come to an airlock door.

Swizzers and Viper-6 move in to the room but they are not able to hit the main creature behind the cover of the desk an the interposing flyers.

Rocket's beam of electricty burns the main hive creature and one of the constituent.

D'yzliit recognize the creature an Apari. They are a living hive creature. They are somewhat formless and are immune critical and can spawn off more of the Constituents or reabsorb them for healing.

Hermena is able to get the creature distracted and with her sniper shot is able to just hit the creature though the cover.

Thagomar leaps and almost knocks one of the flying constituent out of the air. But it just returns the favor by striking twice, while it perfectly hovers.

Constituent Claw Attack: 1d20 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 10 - 4 = 19 v KAC
Constituent Claw Attack: 1d20 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 10 - 4 = 18 v KAC

Followed by the blue creature
Constituent Claw Attack: 1d20 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (1) + 10 - 4 = 7 v KAC
Constituent Claw Attack: 1d20 + 10 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 10 - 4 = 17 v KAC

Both creatures failing madly.

The red one flies up to Rocket and swipes at him
Constituent Claw Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29 v KAC
Claw Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 S

A spike then flies from the main mass at Hermena

Apari Spike Attack: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 15 v KAC
But it flies wide.

Then another Constituent spawns from the main creature and flies up to Hermena as well.

Constituent Claw Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21 v KAC
Claw Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 S

Interesting. These things are not many, but one. Diz broadcasts to the others as he loads a minor inhibitor into his weapon. Smaller spawns can re-merge with the primary bulk. Would seem to provide a measure of 'dispersed vitality' - crushing major hive first would limited spread of defenders but clearing the minor constituents limits hive's ability to self-renew.

The shirren pokes his head around the cover trying to get a line on the apari bulk, but the desks and flying spawn makes aiming at it a trail. Instead, he launches an acidic blast at the nearest bug assaulting Rocket.

Attack v EAC: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15 for Acid: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
If it hits, Red gets -1 to attacks for 8 rounds

So 'dealer's choice' is the idiom?

Oh, thanks for letting know about the update. Do you know if I could change it to another feat? If the DR is so specific, would rather have Toughness instead.

Stellar mode: photon 2

Seeing his teammates still dangerously nearby, Thomagar steps into the corner, keeping his friends away from the eventual explosion. He then continues pounding away at the same target.

vs green:
solar palm vs KAC, photon mode: 1d20 + 5 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 5 + 5 + 1 = 26 bludgeoning dmg: 1d6 + 5 + 5 + 3 + 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 5 + 5 + 3 + (3) + 1 = 23

Thomagar will likely explode next turn, so good if you can keep more than 10ft away.

@Thagomar, at this point in time there isn't a free respect in SFS for this update.

D'yzliit's bash zaps and annoys the one little bug

Then Rocket's blast then finishes it off and seriously damages the one next to it.

Thagomar then handily smashes the one little fly next to him.

Constituent Claw Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29 v KAC
Claw Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 S
And Swizzers attempts to move around the one flying creature but still is caught by its claw.

Viper-6 and Hermena can still act

Hermena's purple forcefield ripples as the constituent's claw scrapes through and gashes her armor. As the forcefield starts to recharge, Hermena snarls, rolls away behind Rocket and Diz, then turns the barrel of her rifle towards her assailant. Aim at Yellow Constituent, using Deadly Aim feat. Ok thanks. In that case, I'll go with piercing 'cos I find teeth the scariest, and hope there's a free respec for this. The nerf has made this feat way too specialised to be useful.

Yellow already took its AoO

Hermena moves out of the way and blasts the bug next to her out of the sky.

Viper-6 then deftly dispatches the one by the main hive creature.

The Apari itself shoots another spike at Thomagar
Apari Spike Attack: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (11) + 14 = 25 v KAC
Spike Damage: 2d8 + 7 ⇒ (1, 2) + 7 = 10 P
Some of the spike bouncing off Thomagars harden skin

And then spawn one more Constituent as it claws at Thomagar as well
Constituent Claw Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 27 v KAC
Claw Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 S
But the claws slash though with no issue.

Everyone is up again.

Going to assume that Viper 6 is safe being behind the corner even though she is 10ft away. If not, Thomagar will delay until she moves out of range.

Making sure that the rest of the team is out of range, Thomagar releases all the pent up stellar energy in a massive ball of fire!
