For the time being lets give Pavo the ring and let him scout the area. If he falls then he would be protected and if he encounters resistance or a trap he could jump off of the ledge and make it down here safely. What do you say Pavo?
Pavo Alazario |
Gripping the pommel of the shortsword, Pavo looks to still be marveling at the unrusted nature of the blade. When he catches his name, he looks up and says, "Sure, I can climb up the chain if you all want and see what is up there. I picked up many skills working at the Emporium, but me main act there was that o' acrobat. Not the best at climbing yet as the act was more me flipping around on stage and balancing on objects than climbing tall things, but I know how ta take a fall when needed and as Ol' Jerem use to say, 'tha only way ya get better is by doin'." slipping the sword in his belt, he looks to the others for their final decision.

Lucid lights all the lanterns in their respective alcoves. The multi-coloured lights reflect off of the glass chips in the ceiling, causing a disorientating prismatic swirl of colours. When the last lantern is lit, the soft rasping of stone against stone can be heard somewhere above you.
(The lantern chain is pretty easy to climb, DC15)
Markus climb: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Marcus climbs up the shaft that the blue lantern's chain descends from. 40 feet up, he pops through a hole in the floor at the end of a thin passage that extends into the shadows to the northeast. Perhaps seventy feet away, the passage ends in what looks like an enormous stone human face, its mouth open in an angry scream. There is an open doorway in the mouth that leads to an area beyond.
Lucid* |
You hear that?Lucid says with the grind of stone. Something did open, but its up above. Lets go.
Lucid studies the chain. I'll never make it up all that way. he laments. Someone will have to hoist me. He gets out a rope and begins to secure it around his mid section.
Ramos the Herald |
I still don't like this! Mutters Ramos. We have already found several traps including that one that spewed gas at us. Eyeing Pavo the priest of bad luck continues. Who knows what's up there. There could be a boulder just waiting to roll down and crush us, or poison darts. With that shaft the way it is, we would be trapped. Pavo, I say you go up there and check it out before we all head up.
Sverrïr Koltǫnn |
Apologies guys - for some reason the game thread was no longer updating for me... bah!
Sverrir spits on his palms and slowly, methodically climbs up to where Markus waits.
As he pulls himself up, the dwur claps eyes on the screaming stone effigy;
"Huh... Wondr what he screams about?"
GM Fanguar |
Pavo does a sweep of the hallway, looking for traps. His search is successful when he steps on a cleverly hidden pressure plate, though nothing happens when he triggers the trap.
Peering through the gaping mouth at the end of the hallway is a long, dark room with no floor. A three-foot-wide beam of petrified wood spans the chasm, leading straight ahead into darkness. About ten feet below the beam, countless clay balls the size of oranges form an irregular floor, but it is impossible to tell if they represent a wholly solid surface. The walls to either side of the beam are covered in a honeycomb of geometric patterns and the feature less stone ceiling extends about 20' above the beam
Map posted in campaign tab.
Sverrïr Koltǫnn |
Sverrir eyes the plucky halfling;
"Tie yourself onto me little vun. Should you fall I'll reel you in like before har!"
Khyrn Lossen |
"I'm with Markus, something doesn't seem right here. What say we toss something into those balls below, just to see if anything is down there?"
If possible, Khyrn would like to be standing about where the carved face is located.
GM Fanguar |
The map is editable, so if you have access you can place you tokens wherever. Also, the drop from the from the beam is only ~10', but you could set some sort of rope work up, if you so choose.
Pavo takes a step out onto the walkway. It seems stable and strong enough to support all those who choose to cross. Opposite you at the other end of the walkway is and intricately sculpted steel door.
Lucid* |
Not sure you should have trusted me with so much power - Editable Map. :) Took me a moment but I think I have figured out how to place myself on the map.
Lucid moves to the edge of the drop, casts Detect Magic, and looks around.
Pavo Alazario |
His time as an acrobat having taught him the tricks of balancing form a hight point, Pavo stares at the door ahead as he says, "It could be. The only way we gonna find out is if we get across ta inspect it."
With that, Pavo begins to make his way across as he says out loud, "I wonder where the clay balls came from though."
I tried to place myself on the map, but my icon promptly disappeared when I did. Taking it nice and slow, Pavo would be about 15 feet out on the beam.
Lucid* |
Happened to me too, the first time Pavo. Its under the map. Not sure why it does that. I had to slide the map over, grab it, and move it again. Maybe when I created a copy the new image was on top since it was newer?
Sverrïr Koltǫnn |
Aside his comrades the dwur warrior smiles grimly;
"Worse could yet komm...
Sverrir watches Pavo's progress with interest
Lucid* |
Something down there that is magic under the balls. We will need to try to retrieve them. Might even be some kind of keys.
Can I tell how deep down they are? Willing to triangulate some
Sverrïr Koltǫnn |
Sverrir nods toward Lucid;
"The little one? Ease him down and yank him back up... Should have been a fishermann than a miner har!"
Khyrn Lossen |
"I still think we should throw something down there first."
He pulls a torch out of his pack and prepares to toss it down.
If people say "no" he won't do it, but if nobody stops him, he will toss it out into the room. Not trying to ignore the party, but he thinks lowering somebody into the fun ball room before tossing something down there isn't the best idea. :)

C'mon... what could possibly go wrong ;)
With a grim smile Sverrir bids Khyrn caution;
"Hold Khyrn! If something ignites it will toast Lucid when I lower him har!"
GM Fanguar |
Khyrn lobs a torch into the ball pit. Almost immediately, there is rustle and shudder as a hideous tentacled worm bursts from a nearby hiding spot beneath the spheres. It pounces on the torch tearing it to pieces. It hisses in frustration and seeing you above it, hisses again.

Map updated. Remember that the creature is below you in the ball pit
Khyrn Lossen |
Khyrn gapes at the creature, "By the sword of Heironeous, what new devil is this?!"
1st level: magic weapon (D), X-air bubble-X, bless
Okay, wasn't expecting that. :)
Lucid* |
Knowledge Dungeoneering: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
It is a Grick. Lucid calls out. You will need a magic weapon to be effective in hurting it.
Lucid watches it closely, ready to grease it should it start to climb up to where his group is.
Pavo Alazario |
Eyes widening as a pile of clay balls explode upward, Pavo's eyes widen as the creature lurges from below. When Lucid mentions the need for a magic weapon, he looks to the sword gripped in his hand and, giving a little gulp, shouts back, "I'm not going down their alone! One o' you fellas go down with me and I would be happy to take a stab at Sir Tentacles down there."
Holding action until Marcus or Sverrir move down to confront it.
GM Fanguar |
The ball pit counts as difficult terrain. It's a 10' jump down to the pit from the walkway. DC15 Acrobatics check to ignore the fall damage, if you fail, you take 1d6 ⇒ 5 points of damage and fall prone.
As you plan your attack, you hear a disembodied chuckle, "Oooo, that was scary. What will our intrepid explorers do now?"
