Greta's smile falters briefly as the others continue to seem to favor exploration over getting to the surface as quickly as possible. She follows Tristan towards the final door, but as she goes she calls out to Amelia, "how do we get back to the surface as quickly as possible?"

Tristan, this isn't related to anything going on right now, but I forgot to have you do this earlier. Please make a Fortitude save.

Amelia shakes her head in response to Benedic. "She wasn't the sharing type. 'Go here, do that, or I'll kill you!' was more her style."

At Greta's question, she points to the ladder leading up and out of the trophy hall. "Right up that way."

Tristan opens the remaining door, which leads to what appears to be a crude pantry. A rack of hooks hangs from the ceiling, cured slabs of meat dangling from them and filling the room with a smoky aroma. A group of barrels appears to hold other preserved foodstuffs.

Thinking back to the kitchen, you remember the butchered direrats on the tables, along with what you suspect may have been the remains of humanoids.

"Thanks," Greta says to the prisoner with a smile, "does this bring us right into the city or are there more tunnels to go through still?" I apologize if we went over this already- I'm on medication right now and my brain ain't workin' too good.

Once Tristan has established that the final door is merely a pantry, she announces, "Alright, so, unless anyone has a really strong desire to go swimming, it's time to head up and see how bad things really are in the city..." Then she leads the way to the ladder and up it.

Junior- if you're in the form of something with a swim speed you might not have to roll a swim check (although if the current is as strong as it sounds you will), and I think you'll get a +8 racial bonus if you do. That said, maybe look at how strong the current is before you try anything because if its strong enough to make a roaring sound then there's a reasonably good chance that jumping in may be suicide.

I am currently an android. And well Junior is a fool so my action stands. If for some reason I see a way forward without swimming, I'll take it and report back. Totally blanked that I could get a swim speed.

Alter Self

The spell can give you a swim speed, but not water breathing. Personally, I like the Darkvision (since I don't have it) and Scent....

I don't want to derail the thread but, if you read the polymorph rules, there's a (pretty strong IMO) case to be made that gaining a swim speed via alter self also grants you water breathing. We can discuss in the discussion thread if you want.

While the rope is quite old, Junior has no trouble descending into the lower cavern. Down here, the current is slowed somewhat by the wider, but it still flows at a decent pace from south to north. The ceiling dips below the water level in both directions, and it is impossible to tell where the river goes from there. Looking down into the clear water, Junior can see pale fish darting to and fro, looking for food.

Climb: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 1 = 8

Junior goes to climb back up but then gets a face full if water. "Aaahh! I'm under attack!" That should still let me climb a knotted rope. Junior thinks about chiding Tristan but then realizes that the water clinging to his clothes shows off just enough of his well toned musculature to make a monk blush. He smiles and poses for his fans.

Though he has little trouble ascending the ladder, in his haste Junior churns the water, obscuring the depths somewhat.. He's barely more than a few feet above the waterline when an enormous fish, white as a bone and easily the length of a human, lunges for him with its freakishly long mouth full of jagged teeth. Fortunately for him, it falls short and crashes back into the water, allowing him to escape unharmed.

Caliban laughs at the interplay between his comrades, This is a good thing, we can find joy even while trapped beneath the surface and a demon army ransacking the last city we were in. They cannot defeat our spirits if we keep laughing! He offers to assist Junior in armoring so the process doesn't take as long and they can follow Greta up the ladder to face whatever challenge is next.

As they move Junior begins chanting while pointing at each of his friends in turn, "Scourgify!" With each spell completion his companions feel cleansed as if they took a hot bath complete with lavender laced soap.

At the top of the ladder, Greta finds herself standing in a foul smelling room. In the corner lies a pile of shredded cloth. You can just make out the eyeshine of a small creature watching you from inside the pile, but it makes no aggressive moves.

Continuing east is another room. A rusted iron door sits in the center of the eastern wall of this small chamber. A copper brazier hangs from the ceiling above a flimsy wooden table.

Survival DC 15:
Judging by the patterns of scuff marks around the floor, it looks like this room saw regular use. It's unclear why it now sits empty, but it looks like whoever was here left in a hurry.

Greta smiles appreciatively and almost says thank you to Junior as his magic cleans away the grime that had coated her. Sadly, the welcome feeling of cleanliness is not long lived before a new stink appears. Confronted by the strange door, she turns for one brief moment to look around before her growing impatience to reach the surface and see what state the city is in gets the better of her.

Turning forward again, she grabs the door handle and tries to swing it open.

Massielo smells himself after the artificial bath and thanks Junior "I think this is the first time I've been this clean. Thank you." He follows the others up the stairs.

Assuming I notice the pair of eyes in the cloth too.

Massielo looks at the apparently small creature and attempts to gain its friendship. "Here, kitty", he says in a friendly tone.

Benedic sighs with relief as his body and armor are made clean, and he nods his thanks to Junior. As they continue forward, he keeps Radiance aloft to light their way, and also to act as a symbol of hope for the ragged band of survivors.

Appreciate everyone's patience. Still have a sleep debt but I'm paying it off now.

What pokes its head out of the nest is no cat, but an enormous rat the size of a small dog. Cautious, it creeps forward and sniffs at Massielo's hand. He seems to have won it over for now, but two more sets of eyes become visible in the nest.

Greta opens the door with no difficulty, and it opens into a room that, unlike many of the others, is mostly worked stone. This large chamber must have once been a cistern for the sewer system. Walls made of identical stone blocks hold up a lofty ceiling reinforced with elegant stone arches, while the center of the room contains a more recent-looking structure made of brick walls that reach from floor to ceiling.

Massielo looks at the rat and friends, grabs some food from his backpack and offers it. He says "Are you guys hungry? Poor creatures."

After, he follows Greta into the new room and clutches his small shield and draws his magical morningstar. He says "Careful, there may be trouble."

These appear to just be regular (as much as that term can apply) dire rats. The closest one stands on its hind legs, sniffs at the food offered by Massielo, and grabs it with its claws before it begins to nibble.

The entrance to the brick structure is easy enough to find, though the pathway inside turns to the left and out of sight after only a few feet.
