"Could you point us in the direction of something useful, Aiayana? Otherwise, I'd rather be on our way, preparing to tackle the threat of this potential demigod. Hate to arrive too late to thwart it."
GM MattMorris |
Aiayana nods at the suggestion: [b]"It's likely that the occupiers cleared out anything obvious, but the butler had a secret pantry where he kept some valuables and useful items. I doubt they have found it.
The bulter's room is beyond area D. I've placed Aiayana there so you can see where it is on the map .
The mistress of the house leads you through an area that was once a fine kitchen, though now the room is in shambles. Crockery and utensils have been broken or discarded haphazardly, and the spoiled remains of many meals lie strewn about.
In a chamber on the other side of the kitchen, a bed occupies the far wall chamber next to a breakfront cabinet of metal and fungal planks. A low shelf set into the cabinet holds a still-intact porcelain bowl and the shattered remains of a glass vase. A small wall niche holds the broken remains of a piece of fine statuary which, based on the chipping of nearby stone and broken crossbow bolts nearby, was recently used as target practice.
Aiayana reaches past the damaged statue to touch a hidden switch in the wall and a secret door opens into a pantry containing a small wine rack, two large clay jars with lids, and a small chest of fungal planks.
Aryas Katsu |
Aryas Scans everything with detect magic during their scan.
Hekk |
"What are those wood like things? They look weird."
Hekk snags a bottle of wine. While the others check for magic and searches he takes a pull on the bottle.
Tathane Halfbarrel |
"Ok. Just some wine? What's in those jars? Aryas, did you notice anything magical? If so, let's grab the stuff and move on. The sooner we get to Nomianna, the sooner we can figure out this Forsaken Fane place. Sounds like that's where we need to be going."
GM MattMorris |
In his curiosity, Hekk jostles a jar, which knocks it to the floor. Out of it flows a swarm of grubs that immediately spread across the floor in search of food.

Branson Davelock |
Ummm, which room, and what do these grubs look like on the map?
Would you all prefer that I NOVA on the grubs, or do we risk slowly beating them downs nd maybe getting infected with some nastiness? If the answer is NOVA, then Branson orders, "Move away from them..." and he'll drop a flame strike on them.
Hekk |
NOVA
Branson Davelock |
Very well.
Assuming he can drop it "safely" and "legally"...
Flame Strike: 10d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 4, 1, 5, 2, 2, 6, 1, 2) = 26 DC 19 Reflex for Half Damage, Half is Fire DMG, and half is Holy
Well, that sucks, definitely below average! On the plus size, as a swarm it will take 50% extra damage from an AOE attack, so 39.
GM MattMorris |
The swarm is in the bottom right--in front of Aryas and Tathane. I moved you closer so you could see into the room where they are.

Aryas Katsu |

Hekk |
Hekk gapes in amazement as the three fools clump up right in front of the swarm, practically begging to be eaten alive.
Surely they know that is a really bad idea?
The red icon is the captive, right? If it is the blue icon, then she is on her own and Hekk just high tails it out of there instead. Otherwise...
Hekk hurries over to their captive and picks her up, ready to carry her to safety should the voracious grubs make it that far.
Just in case she has a mind to try to wiggle out of his grasp he requests, "Don't fight me on this girl or I'll let the grubs eat you."
i.e. Move action and another move action to pick her up.

Moving into our spaces will provoke an AOO.

Fist Damage: 1d3 + 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (3) + 1 + (3) = 7 the 1d6 is fire damage
Fist Bleed: 1d4 ⇒ 1
In looking at the rules for a swarm, they are immune to critical hits, but it doesn't appear they are immune to bleed damage! Also, Branson is wearing a swarm bane clasp.
If it is still alive after everyone's AOOs, then on Branson's turn, he will activate his bane ability towards vermin I believe...
Fist Hit: 1d20 + 7 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 7 + 2 + 2 = 14
Fist Damage: 1d3 + 2 + 2d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 2 + (2, 4) + (1) = 10 the 1d6 is fire damage

Fist Damage: 1d3 + 2 + 2d6 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + 2 + (5, 1) + (2) = 11 the 1d6 is fire damage
Having hit it in the first round, it should be bleeding:
Fist Bleed: 1d4 ⇒ 4
"I believe I have it bleeding slowly to death, Let us close some doors, and lock it in here to die!"
Branson will 5' out of the room.
GM MattMorris |
Aryas and Tathane manage not to have grubs burrow into their flesh, but Branson isn't so lucky! Branson's [i]swarm bane clasp[/ooc] makes his attacks effective against the pile of grubs. Aryas misses the bulk of the swarm with his acid flask, but it does splash onto the grubs a bit.
Branson is right that, if you leave it behind closed doors, it will bleed to death. But, that will take time. How long would you like to wait, if at all?

Until the rest of the home is explored, which should take a minute or two - enough for the swarm to expire.
LeGuin |
Leguin sees Hekk come running out of the room - "What is happening?!" He'll continue to back up, and be ready to attack if he is threatened by any foes.
Branson Davelock |
My action in the next combat round, would be to gather everyone and channel, which would all cure the rot grub infection. I mention that, so that maybe we can shut doors, and move on clearing the place while the thing bleeds out?
Aryas Katsu |
Aryas moves out of the room as fast as possible.
Hekk |
"Big fat grubs with lots of tiny teeth. Best just to avoid the things."
GM MattMorris |
The only room of interest left is the house's trophy hall. (Area A) Inside, the walls of this chamber are hung with all manner of banners, weapons, trinkets, and bits of armor, as well as more than a few stuffed and mounted examples of Darklands creatures. Two statues adorn the corners of the chamber. One depicts a noble-looking caligni wrapped in chains, and the other a decapitated duergar holding its startled head in its hands. The once-polished tile floor is now marred by many muddy tracks.
Aryas Katsu |
Aryas approaches the last area of interest and casts detect magic again and scans the surroundings.
Branson Davelock |
Ok, it sounds like we were able to back out of that room and door it off. In that case, here is the channel to heal everyone, and kill the grubs in me...

Leopold had been going to see Aiyana when he hears this fracas break out.
Aiyana, would you excuse me just a sec? It sounds like we're about to trash more of your house.
Seeing the lumbering form of the cephalaphore, he calls out, These things are the living manifestation of a lifetime of doubt and self-sabotage. That's why it hurts when you hit them. More to the point, I won't be able to free its mind, so here, LeGuin, be careful.

Tathane's ears perk up at the sound of combat. "Not again." He sighs and smirks. "I guess this will make Hekk happy." He races through the room in the direction of the noise. "Ok guys. This looks like more fun. You say it is a manifestation of doubt and self-sabotage? Hmm. Well, I guess. In any case, I won't be able to harm that pile of stone."
