Upon their return to Freeport, Raven was dismayed with the loss the navigator. But he did have the information recovered from Hawk-faced Jake's journal as well as corroborating details from Sally and John. He worked with those two as he could. Eventually he came to them with an offer.

"Listen, we're in the business of hunting down Anne the Red. She's been causing a lot of trouble for folks all over, you two know that better than most. We could sure could use some folk who really know their way around a ship. But Anne's definitely in the way, sooner or later she'll be the cause of another problem.

But that's not all, see I'm personally looking to start my own crew. Got part of a map which'll lead to a big score, and I need some skilled folk like you both. Not saying I need you to be on a ship per se." he says, looking at John directly. "Even just some people here in Freeport who I can trust would be good enough. In this case I'd train you both in how to keep yourselves afloat here. Course, a cuts in it for anyone who helps me actually track down the treasure, I've done enough digging for one lifetime. So, you in?" he turned his gaze from John to Sally, gauging their reactions to either offer.
... ...
Several days in he found that his time using the All-night concoction had changed him more permanently than he'd thought. His senses were higher, and he was able pick out details of places and people much more easily than before. He tended to sleep less though, his dreams now plagued by sounds of ocean waves and the hypnotic light from that orb kept appearing, lulling him into its living darkness where pain and death awaited. Because of this, he found himself staying out late or waking up early to canvass locations and to pick out more or less difficult marks for himself to take from.
... ...

When not thieving, he went to Thomas and joined in on the man's, or rather his bodyguards, sparring sessions when they had them.
"You two really had a rough time but you definitely helped us make it through. One and Two... I don't really like only calling you by numbers. What are your real names? Course we don't have to tell your boss. Not sure he cares."
... ...
He found Kris living in the poorer district, a place he did not mark, and asked her for training himself on resisting and dodging her magics. He was becoming more impressed by her growth in power as a priest and a beacon of hope for the people. He kept near her as she seemed to shine brighter and push his own darkness away.

One day after her sermons were over he went to her. "Kris, that was really well spoken today! These people must feel blessed to have you in their lives. Makes me wish I had met someone like you a long time ago." he had a momentarily wistful look in his eyes.
"Have you considered moving up to other parts of the city? Speaking to the common folk, the soldiers, or even the nobility. I'm sure your words would reach them too."

Thomas shut himself in the manor, pouring over old books its prior owner kept locked in his study. The rift between himself and his granddaughter drove him to keep his mind engaged elsewhere, lest he slide into depression.

Will: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

It was then that he discovered a strange idol amidst the shelves. It whispered to him during the twilight hours. At first the elderly man ignored the sounds he heard, thinking them just remnants of the dreams he'd had the night before. Still at nights they haunted him. Eventually, he listened.

The whispers told him he could return his family to glory, mend the broken ties between him and his grandaughter just for a mere droplet of his blood. At first, the once-noble ignored it's temptations, but as days and weeks went by it still whispered to him.

Eventually, tired and bitter, Thomas found himself standing before the idol almost in a daze. Clutching a knife in one hand, the little voice urged him into making a small cut on his finger. As the blood touched the idol, it melted away with a hiss. Almost as if touched by acid, the idol dissolved into a dark-greenish puddle, leaving nothing behind.

Level 7 story:

Kris breathed in the salty sea air as she undocked at Freeport. Freeport was always a little unsettling to her and she never could put her finger on quite why. Maybe it was the Naga enclave that tried to keep her and punish her. Maybe it was the growing unease and restlessness of the city. Maybe it was because this whole place was an unorderly bastion of chaos.

She sighed again. Mustering her courage, Kris headed towards the Enclave to speak with the Matron of Freeport. She walked down the alleyways and twists in the streets until she reached the secret entrance. She knocked.

A section of the door slide open and two reptilian eyes peered out from beyond. You are not welcome here, Kryslix, it hissed.

Be quiet, you, and open the door. I am to speak with the Matron.

I sssaid, you are not welcome here, the snake headed naga said again.

A voice called out from behind, "Stand down, Ssythissys. It is fine. I will speak with her.

Yesss, Matron, Ssythissys hissed as the peek slot closed and the door opened.

Thank you, Kris said, slightly bowing her head to the door guard.

He is right, the Matron said as Kris entered, [/b]you are not welcome here. Not after what you did the last time. It is because of you that the world is falling apart. Everyday people get worse. Every day the nightmares drive people to the brink of insanity. Every day our people are reverting, becoming more snake-like. Look at Ssythissys! He can barely speak these days! Look at all of us! We are becoming more savage. This is your fault, Krislyx. When you fled the ritual you broke the holy bonds between our people and the Shavra. Every day we get worse. We have had three suicides just this week. Their blood is on your hands, Kryslix, your hands. I can only pray you have come to your senses and you are here to sacrifice yourself so that the Shavra may return.[/b]

Kris held her head high as the Matron spoke, No, I shall not. I am-

Then leave, Krislyx, I do not want you in my si-

NO, Kris bellowed, her voice echoing in the ancient halls. In a flash, Kris held the small stone which embodied the Cosmic Egg in her hands. The magic channeled through her and wrapped around the Matron, holding the older woman in place. The matron's eyes went wide with fear as she realized she could not move. Hatred shone behind her eyes.

I am not a child, Matron. You shall not speak over me as if I am one of your students to berate. I am here because I need help in hunting down Anne the Red. She is behind all this. She stole the Queen of Gold from a powerful necromancer, and she has been leaving behind cursed artifacts on people throughout the pirate isles. We must find her so she can tell us where the Queen of Gold belongs, so we can return the Queen to her husband and alleviate the suffering of this world.

The Matron hissed behind her magical constraints, barely able to speak. It was a testament to her willpower that she could do so at all. You are a fool, Krislyx. Anne has nothing to do with this. This is punishment for your refusal to become one with the Celestial-

NOTHING TO DO WITH THIS? Kris screeched. SHE HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THIS! I have been hunting her for months, sailing from island to island cleaning up after her messes and saving lives! I have spread the word of Shavra to new ears and opened up hearts across the sea!

Blasphemy! the Maton hissed. Anne said-

ANNE SAID? YOU KNOW HER? YOU HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH HER? Kris' anger was reaching new heights she had never before experienced. With another motion, more magic poured out of the Cosmic Egg and Kris began to shine, the inner radiance causing her scales to glow as if a light was shining behind them. Whispers filled the halls as other naga witnessed Kris' majestic power.

Kris continued to speak, her voice booming within the halls, You shall tell me what you know of Anne the Red, Matron. Have you been dealing with Anne?

Yes, the Matron croaked.

Has she given you an artifact? An object of power?

No- before the Matron could finish, she screamed in pain. The magic of the Command Truth spell inflicted harm upon those who lied. Yes, she said, weakly.

Where is it? Kris demanded.

In my office.

Kris dropped the imprisonment spell and started walking towards the Matron's office. Her light illuminated the halls as she traveled through the enclave. Naga got out of her way as she passed.

Well? Where is it, Matron? The Matron pointed towards the object - a sculpture of a snake slithering up a branch. No wonder you are all reverting to be more snake-like! This is a cursed artifact! Matron! You are a shame upon the Naga! You are reviled in the eyes of the Shavra! Leave this place! You are banished!

You cannot banish me! the Matron roared back. I am the Matron of Freeport! I am queen amongst the Naga here! My word is Law! Naga! Seize her! She has blasphemed against the Shavra and against this holy temple!

Two Naga warriors entered the Matron's office, their faces like that of cobras.

Do not strike me, Kris warned, for any harm to seek upon me shall be returned in equal amounts. I am the Shavra, and you cannot hurt me without striking your own soul.

She speaks nonsense! Kill her!

The two naga slithered forward, their backs moving in a serpentine manner. With quick strikes, their swords cut into Kris and blood started soaking into her clothing. But her words rang true, and identical cuts appeared on the bodies of the two warriors. Their eyes widened in horror as the realization of their actions donned on them. Forgive us, oh Shavra! they begged, prostrating themselves in front of her.

No! the Matron screamed. No! She is a lie! She is false! I am the Matron! Obey me! Her words echoed down the halls, reverberating in the temple. With fury and anger, the Matron raised her own hands; she drew upon the shadows and the blackness and the hatred within her and summoned forth forbidden magic. The shadows in the room deepened, threatening to overwhelm the glow behind Kris' scales I curse you, Krislyx! I curse you! May you never again-

No, Kris calmy commanded. No, you will not. She grew brighter and brighter, completely eliminating any hint of a shadow. As the shadows faded, the cosmic egg in her hand started to glow as well, and pulled at the Matron. Wisps of magic were pulled from the Matron into the egg, leaving her body and leaving her powerless.

What is this?! the Matron shrieked. What have you done to me?

You are not worthy of the power you hold, Matron. I have stripped it from you. For I am the Shavra, and I have found you unworthy. But I also shall lead by example and you shall live to one day seek redemption. Seek forgiveness in pray, Matron, so that you may once again bathe in the light.

The Matron was left speechless. Kris moved past her, carrying the cursed artifact out to the main hall of the temple. She set it down on the altar and began to summon her most powerful light, concentrating it on the artifact and forcing as much power as she could stand. Her glow brightened the entire temple to the point of nearly blinding the other Naga. Then the explosion happened. The artifact's power was released, exploding outwards and knocking everyone to the ground. Stones started falling as the temple started to collapse.

You have ruined us, Krislyx! the Matron screamed at her, That artifact was our savior! Our hope! Our redemption! Our only means of surviving the coming of the Lord of Demons! You have ruined us all.

No, Kris said, her inner radiance finally fading away, I have saved you from a fate worse than death. But her words could not be heard over the cacophony as the temple collapsed around them all.

She had saved them. They would never believe her, but she had. She destroyed the cursed artifact that was corrupting their very souls, but in the process she destroyed the Naga Enclave of Freeport. She destroyed their homes. That's what they would remember about her and they would hate her for it. But that didn't matter, because she had saved their very souls.

The trip back to Freeport found Raven in growing discomfort. First, a dull throb turned, which became a splitting headache, and finally a migraine which left him short tempered and unable to focus. The power he’d gained from the Queen of Gold began to change his body. Slowly at first, his hair and fingernails grew longer, his eyes continued to change, becoming a brighter shade of gold, his teeth seemed sharper somehow.

The moment they returned to Freeport, he didn’t want to talk to anyone, could barely carry on a conversation at all as he hopped off the boat and made his way to the tavern. He brushed aside Jon and Sally’s questions as they found him.
” Ven, you’re back! How did things go? Did you manage to… what happened? You look terrible.” Sally began.
” Not now!” he growled. Then after a moment. ” Things… didn’t go as planned. Leave me.”
” Raven, we onl-” Jon tried to interject, but was cut off.
” Not tonight!” he interrupted, slamming his fist on a table before storming off.

He got himself a simple room, got blind drunk, and passed out. The rest of the night passed in a haze of pain and restless dreams. The voice of the Queen of Gold continued to echo in his mind but he was in no state to remember anything.

In the morning, his mind had cleared and he found his room a wreck. Clothing, bags, weapons, they were all torn to shreds or broken now. He hardly recognized himself in the cracked mirror; his gaze was harder than it had been before. His senses sharper, better. Reflexes became faster, and his body was now stronger. He could now see in the dim darkness of the morning light. He could move more swiftly. He looked at people different than he had before, he was a hunter now. He could stalk those he wished from the shadows, hide from nearly anyone and anything. Raven was a beast.
--
Despite his transformation, his lifetime as a thief wouldn’t let him forget his other purpose as he remembered his plan from before. He found Jon and Sally the next day, bringing them the news that the Queen of Gold had been found but not much else had been recovered.

”So that’s all you brought back then?”

”Yes. We’ll need to set up an auction, or failing that, find buyers among Anne’s contacts. News should spread fast once the Queen of Gold’s been brought up.”

”Ven, you can’t set up an auction with only one thing. Besides, they aren’t going to meet with just anyone. Even if we have something extremely valuable, these people are canny. They can only be approached by those in power, have wealth, or live in luxury. You… you don’t look like someone they’d want to meet.”

” Hmm. I think, Thomas can take care of that. I’ll have to see about collecting some other things along the way.”

That night, Raven set out to build himself up as a fence. Not long after, Raven found himself going rounds and falling into his old habits with Jon and Sally’s help; picking wealthy marks, stalking them to their homes, and pickpocketing them, not just for the money, but their keys as well. It was also fun now, a challenge. His new abilities came in handy as well, neither people nor animals saw him.

He hadn’t had cause to crack safes for some time, but Raven’s hands instantly went into automatic, the thieving mindset returning like an old friend. As the days went by, his skills were lucrative. He pilfered a number of finer houses and well to do merchants. At one point even taking a fine heraldry shield with a strange runic design featuring a raven. He was advised not to pawn off such a unique piece, unfortunately. Too easy to track down, they said, so he kept it for himself. But even so, in a short time he made a decent profit. Split his share with Jon and Sally, and took to renting a high-class room for a time.

He had acquired a number of objects with which to catch the attention of the underworld. Of course, the key piece was sure to attract enough attention from a number of big fish, namely Anne.

Raven had seen to purchasing new clothes and other items for himself in the meantime to restore his lost and shredded items. ” It’s only a matter of time before we bring the Queen out to bait our trap. Then we’ll catch Anne the Red in it, and you two will have revenge for the deaths of your friends.”
--
Later

Raven stood from a crouching position in his lavish room, he had heard her coming and an easy grin fell onto his face as Kris entered the room.
” Safe, huh? Well, far be it for me to turn away a gift from you, Kris.” he said, casually strolling over to her and taking the cloak. He stopped after a moment, taking stock of her.

” Something about you seems different as well. There’s a resolve in your eyes. Your movements are lither. Like you don’t have anything holding you back or weighing you down anymore.” He looked thoughtful for a moment.

” There was something of an uproar in the city, recently. Was that you?”

"I've made some preparations. Stalking their trail. Our path is ready. Now we just need to get Thomas on board, he'll be key to getting us to lure out Anne's contacts and buyers. Perhaps you could even speak to them there. I'm sure even they can't deny what Anne has done." Raven said with some excitement showing in his golden eyes at the thought.

After a long moment, his features hardened and he looked at Krislyx.
"It's too bad about your enclave, though. They are fools for not believing you, though we probably could have used their help in dealing with Anne and the necromancer." he growled in a low, angry tone.

"But I think that hardly matters now, Kris. If the Queen's words are true, there isn't much time left before all of this comes to a head. All we need is you."

Ven walked closer to her, putting a hand on her shoulder, his voice lowering.
"You've come a long way since we first met. I've watched as you spoke to the crowds of this city, becoming stronger and more confident. Our hunt for Anne has shaped you, and now you truly are something else. I believe you are the Shavra, Kris." he said, leaning in close.

These are just for ease of reference:

Sun shard Celestial, Attack 1
Target: One creature you can reach
A blazing shard of light slashes toward the target. Make a Will attack roll against the target’s Agility.
On a success, the blazing light strikes the target and deals 2d6 + 2 damage. If the target is a spirit or an undead, or has a special vulnerability to sunlight, it takes 1d6 extra damage.

For the duration, you make attack rolls with 1 boon, or with 2 boons against targets that have Corruption scores of 1 or higher. In addition, you impose 1 bane on attack rolls made against you by demons, devils, faeries, spirits, or undead.

Holy Armaments Theurgy, Utility, 2
Duration: 1 minute
You drop whatever you are holding. A gleaming shield adorned with the symbol of your god appears on your arm, and a shining blade appears in your hand. Both items shed light in a 5-yard radius and remain for the duration or until you drop one or both of them, which ends the spell. As part of the casting of this spell, you can attack with either the sword or shield.
The shield is a large shield with no Strength requirement. While you wield it, the shield imposes 1 bane on attack rolls made against you. Attacks with the shield deal 1d6 + 2 damage.
The blade is a sword with no Strength requirement that grants you 1 boon on attack rolls you make with it. Attacks with the weapon deal 2d6 + 2 damage.
Whenever you attack with either the shield or the sword, you can use Will in place of the attribute you would normally use to make the attack. Attacks you make with either weapon deal 2d6 extra damage to demons, devils, faeries, spirits, and undead.
Finally, if the total of your attack roll is 20 or higher and beats the target number by at least 5, your attack has an additional effect. If you made the attack with the shield, the target becomes dazed for 1 round. If you made the attack with the sword, the target takes 2d6 extra damage.
