1) How do others make you feel? Do you like being the center of attention or bring left alone; is there a such thing as a stranger to you or do you even know what it's like to have a friend. Things like that.

Chiruut was an oddity in Yerath culture. He - and he has adopted 'he' - is unhappy with being at the bottom of the pecking order. He doesn't feel much in the way of sympathy for others.

2) Name one thing you value most. Then name one thing you could lose. These could be ideals, physical possessions, relationships, etc..

His newly-found independence, away from the hive.

The very same.

3) What do you fear? What do you hate?

He fears being dragged back to the hive, even worse off than before if possible.

He hates authority trying to impose its will upon him.

4) What do you desire? What do you love?

Freedom. Personal power to keep it.

5) You have (at least) one secret. What is it?

That the hive might just seek him out.

6) Have you done something Notable? What was it?

Fled the hive, and learned magic.

7) Are you in charge or do you let others take that roll? Do you rebuke authority or revel in it?

Very disgruntled with any form of authority exerting itself to control him. He'll work with others as peers at most. He very much rebukes authority.

8) Do you follow through on your promises and obligations? Or do you delay or avoid? Do you feel guilty when you don't uphold them?

He is inclined to follow through if there would be consequences or long-term harm from not following through. But he has a very calculating mind.

9) What are your opinions on Good and Evil? Do they exist? Or is it all shades of Grey? Where do you see yourself?

Competing powers.

A rising power.

Female Naga Priest Exemplar Mystic Navigator Level 10 | S9, A11, I13, W14 | Health 39 | Damage 15| D11 | Move: 8 | Perc 14 | Insanity: 2 | Corruption: 0 | SR: 2/2 | Fortune: Yes | Status: Normal

1) How do others make you feel? Do you like being the center of attention or bring left alone; is there a such thing as a stranger to you or do you even know what it's like to have a friend. Things like that.

I am comfortable being the center of attention, telling others what to do.

2) Name one thing you value most. Then name one thing you could lose. These could be ideals, physical possessions, relationships, etc..

I value my faith in Shavra and the Cosmic Egg. I could lose all my possessions so long as I held my faith.

3) What do you fear? What do you hate?

I fear other people - the humans and Fey and all the others. My people are so orderly and organized, yet the others are so chaotic and violent. I fear that chaos.

I hate those who willingly perform acts of depravity which will bring forth the Demon Lord to this world as it did my ancestors.

4) What do you desire? What do you love?

I desire a simple life of contemplation. I also desire to one day live and study at the Holy Creche with the other Masters of the Shedding.

I love the simple things, the simple rituals and rites that one performs on a daily basis.

5) You have (at least) one secret. What is it?

I hold the same secret as all my people hold - that we exist. Anyone who discovers our island is kept there forever. Anyone who discovers us must be quarantined from the world so our secret is not revealed.

6) Have you done something Notable? What was it?

I once visited the Holy Creche.

7) Are you in charge or do you let others take that roll? Do you rebuke authority or revel in it?

As the leader of my ministry, I must take charge, whether I want to or not. It is my burden to bear.

8) Do you follow through on your promises and obligations? Or do you delay or avoid? Do you feel guilty when you don't uphold them?

Oaths are sacred and must be followed in good faith.

9) What are your opinions on Good and Evil? Do they exist? Or is it all shades of Grey? Where do you see yourself?

There is a right and there is a wrong. There is little in-between. And I am on the side of Good.

1) How do others make you feel? Do you like being the center of attention or being left alone; is there a such thing as a stranger to you or do you even know what it's like to have a friend. Things like that.

So long as the others know their place, everything is fine. I find unwarranted attention bothersome, but the peons best pay attention when it is my turn to speak. I have many acquaintances, few friends and I like it that way. Letting others get too close opens your back for the knife.

2) Name one thing you value most. Then name one thing you could lose. These could be ideals, physical possessions, relationships, etc..

My Estate, of course. It's been in my family for generations, and there is no way I'm letting it fall now. I'd lose my blood sweat and hair before I let it go.

3) What do you fear? What do you hate?

I'm afraid that everything I've worked to build has been destroyed in my absence.

I hate faeries.

4) What do you desire? What do you love?

I desire to return to my own lands and to see it whole again.

I love my wife and sons, though I worry for their wellbeing.

5) You have (at least) one secret. What is it?

I may have a bastard or two.

6) Have you done something Notable? What was it?

I successfully negotiated a major merchant house into my family, by way of marriage of my eldest son. Though some charlatans would whinge about the purity of my bloodline, it is these decisions that truly grant longevity to a noble line.

7) Are you in charge or do you let others take that roll? Do you rebuke authority or revel in it?

While I'm willing to bend the knee to those above my station, I doubt I'm going to find anyone of such stature in this backwater. I, of course, am willing to shoulder the burden of leadership.

8) Do you follow through on your promises and obligations? Or do you delay or avoid? Do you feel guilty when you don't uphold them?

I, of course, follow my promises. However, the results are not always to the benefits of others, especially if they are a threat.

9) What are your opinions on Good and Evil? Do they exist? Or is it all shades of Grey? Where do you see yourself?

Good, Evil? Hogwash! There are only Shepards and Sheep. If a man were to idly sit as the world passes by, then his no more than cattle! If a man were to balk at the thought of difficulty, then it is best he stays in his pasture. There is only one Evil in the world, and that is the Demon Lord.

I awoke on the beach with a hazy memory and water lapping at my face. Sand threatened to pour into my open mouth. I could already taste the grittiness of the tiny stones on my tongue.

What happened? I thought as the sun started to set, completely unsure of how or why I was here. I was supposed to be on the ship. I was leaving the Holy Creche where my people kept... What did they keep there?

Slowly, as the sun rose, my memories came back. A violent storm had been raging, terrorizing every ship on the sea around the pirate isles. I saw a lightning strike ripe another ship in two as my own captain sailed on, trying to get to open waters where he could avoid a slam into the reefs. But we were not so lucky. A crosswind pushed us further inland and we hit something beneath the waters. I was thrown overboard. I did not see what happened to the Copper Wind; I do not know if she survived the storm nor if anyone else made it. I prayed that it would be so. Let my tragedy be the only sad story upon that ship. It's bad enough that it is not the only tragedy that night.

I slowly got up, the sand sticking to the side of my face and my arms and my shirt. My clothing was soaked through. My leather satchel was still a round me. This was good. For one, it meant I had not been found - or at least had not been preyed upon by theives. I pray no one has seen me, either. That would he problematic. For two, it meant I still had the book I was gifted by the Holy Matron. My satchel also held my stone egg - the symbol of the Shavra and when she would hatch from the Cosmic Egg. It was about the size of my fist, bound in a metal ring with four thin chains leading to a point above it, so the stone would be hanging below like a censer. It was one of my few precious possessions. These were hard to obtain. The book moreso.

The book, like all our holy books, was made from snakeskin and written with ink made from venom. The waters were unlikely to damage it. No, my concerns with the book were not that it would be damaged. It was that I could not open it. It was locked. The Holy Matron had told me that the knowledge to unlock the book's secrets would be revealed to me when I was ready. I do not know what that means. Have I not proven myself? I have been training in the ministry for years; I have been blessed with the knowledge of the Holy Creche - the rarest of gifts among my people. I have laid witness to... to... I cannot remember. Why cannot I remember? What do I remember?

I remember the ship. I first touched the hull of the Copper Wind two months ago. That was the week before we set sail. I remember the azure sky. I remember the departing ship. And I remember standing on the docks saying goodbye with hugs and tears enough to share. But nothing before that, nothing in the island jungles.

That was it. I remember now. The Holy Matron told me my memories of the place would disappear. They would fade the further I was from the Holy Creche. All memories of the inside fade when you depart the island. It is part of what made the island so holy, and part of how we were able to keep our people so secret from the chaotic and violent inhabitants of this world. The other part was not something I never wanted to partake in - we would have to keep anyone who saw us. If the world knew of our existence, they would bring their chaos and violence down upon us and steal or shatter our Cosmic Egg before the Shavra could hatch. That would be bad. That would mean the Shavra would not be reborn to fight the Lord of Demons - to protect our adopted world against its hunger. So we would keep them. Those who found our creche by accident would be forever bound to live out their lives there. Those who saw one of my people would have to be brought back.

This is why going out into the world was so dangerous.

But the Holy Matron told me I must go. I must go into the world and seek out the other creches, to warn our people and guide them back to our first home. Because ever since the nightmares started, we knew that the Lord of Demons was drawing nearer to this world. He will devour is as he did our home world. I pray that the Shavra is hatched before he comes, for I do not know what we will do if she is too late.

Two years ago...

The drone was disgruntled.

It was annoyed. Its name was Chiruut.

Chiruut dug, and carried the dead, and buried, and dug. Again, and again, unless a higher caste from the hive told it to do otherwise. Which was any that were not another drone.

The work was fine. The dead were quiet. But it was fed up of listening to the scouts, and the soldiers, and the consorts, and the Queen's wishes.

Then it dug up the scroll, and began to read. Quietly, whenever it could.

It spoke of magic, real power of the sort higher castes only sometimes held, not just position of birth.

It learned.

**********************
Less than a year ago....

*He* had been away from the hive for months now, moving in a zig-zag route away and out of the Patchwork Lands entirely. He scratched a living through being literal muscle for hire, finding gems and metal, living off the land, whatever it took. Chiruut had adopted the idea of being a "he" to better present himself to softskins and to take in some sense that drones did not possess.

It had sparks of power but not nearly enough if they found him.

They won't have me! They won't bring me back! NEVER!

But enough to make softskins think he was blessed.

"The end is near! Give up your sinful ways! Give up your sinful wealth!"

Heheheheh. Other softskins will find these coins very shiny and give me what I want for them.

**********************

The softskins had spoken of seas, and ships, and other lands.

That's it! I'll go on ship, be away forever! Grow my power and be AWAY!

Thus, Chiruut decided to seek out a vessel.

Two days ago...

Chiruut stared out at the sea as if he would finally see something different.

But that was not what he was doing.

He did not move a muscle but his mind was exerting itself.

Finally, a fish neared the surface.

Chiruut concentrated his power swiftly and the bands of invisible force seized the fish!

Just a little more...

Then, the fish imploded, just as the bands collapsed, leaving the red mess to sink towards the depths.

The yerathi buzzes with delight then says:

"Hah! My focus grows! No mere tricks now but the beginning of real power! The power of my mind!"

Escalating Insanity: People begin to exhibit odd behavior as a result of terrifying dreams, such as excessive scratching, twitching, or frequent moaning. Such displays can be seen almost everywhere one goes.

Each time a creature completes a rest, it must get a success on a Will challenge roll or gain 1 Insanity.

Lifestyle: Getting by. 1 ss.

Downtime story:

Kris spent much of her time moseying around the island, fluttering from this place to the next with little care or concern about which place she'd visit next. She was mostly curious about what all these other people did everyday, and each person she'd come across would be barraged with questions - "What are you doing? Why? How does that help? Is this piece important?" and on and on. Occasionally, she'd speak of the Shavra and the Cosmic Egg and how the legends foretold a time when the Shavra would hatch to fight against a great evil that would beset the world. She did not claim that the Shavra could be her - she wasn't sure if she believed it herself. So she continued to talk as if it was something that would be coming soon. The dreams helped forebode it.

With one such fisherman, she connected. Perhaps he had seen her people before. Perhaps he had been to the Holy Creche and had his memories of the place removed. Whatever it was, he actually listened to her when she spoke and answered her questions with patience when she asked. It was him who gifted her with something he pulled up from the depths on one of his fishing excursions. It was an old bottle, still sealed, covered in barnacles. The liquid inside still held magical healing properties, even after all this time.

Level 2 downtime story:

Chiruut got to work.

The Yerathi was well-used to labour and he wanted coin.

Too useful to neglect.

So he hauled, and dug, and filled, as necessary, day after day.

He started to spend that coin, getting a suit of brigandine fitted for him.

There will be more battles. I must be ready!

The physical labour lent itself to mental discipline also. Chiruut girded his mind against outside influence and readied to protect himself, against all threats.

Level 2 downtime story:

The first few days after the attack, Raven filled his days with paranoid training, watching others closely, and wondering if the demon would return with the shrieking of the eels. It didn't and he relaxed his guard before noting how things finally seemed on the upside for himself. He was remarked as a local hero among the town, he was treated decently, and he was able to come back to a meal, a bed, and he had those he could nearly trust, strange as they were. It almost reminded him of how things used to be for him, back in the orphanage.

Krislyx came to him, asking him how to handle her share of the reward. She had been particularly helpful, so he decided to help her get outfitted with what she needed. The remainder, well, she clearly needed a keener mind to hold on to her wealth for her, lest she be otherwise swindled or spend it frivolously. Like most people would.

He didn't relish the idea but he decided he needed to prepare himself for further trials at sea, so he took to going out with the fisherman every few days. It was practice, he told himself, for when he continued his treasure hunt. The half of his map and its eventual horde was calling after all. But after nearly a week relaxing in town and working with the fisherman, he finally noted the slowly growing oddities among the townsfolk. Their thankfulness turned sour much more quickly than he had surmised and he started to make himself a less public figure than before, relegating himself to his room. He waited for his chance to leave, hoping a ship would arrive and growing steadily more nervous as things continued their downward slide.

Krislyx Downtime Story, Part 1 of 2:

"Krislyx!" the Naga woman called out, "Where have you been?"

Kris stood before the Matron of Freeport, head bowed, hands clasped in front of her. Her clothing was ripped and ragged, the tears evidence of her ordeals.

"It has been weeks, Krislyx. Weeks! We expected you here over a month ago. Where were you? Answer me girl."

"Yes, Matron. I was-"

"And don’t you lie to me. I’ll have none of it. You were out partying with humans, weren’t you? Exploring the far islands and consuming alcohol. I know, every young Naga does just as soon as they slip the creche."

"No, Matron, I was-"

"Why, I remember when your cousin Rygar first arrived in Freeport. He showed up drunker than a pirate’s cabin boy, he did! You heard about him, didn’t you?"

"Yes, Matron, but I was-"

"And here, just look at you! Clothes torn. Missing your trunk. Missing your lessons and study material. I was expecting letters and books from the Holy Matron! And you have none of it! All you have with you is your carrying bag! You sold it all, didn’t you?"

"No, Matron! I was-"

"And the locked book? You better not have lost that! That was vital, you hear me, girl?"

"Yes, Matron. I was-"

"Ugh! I just cannot believe you did this to us, Krislyx. Just what in the world were you thinking? Are you trying to give me a stroke?"

"No, Matron. I was-"

"Don’t you sass me, girl. I know what you were up to. You were lollygagging about the pirate isles. Taking your sweet time getting here. You’ll be punished for this, I hope you know."

"Yes, Matron. But I was-"

"I just.. I cannot believe it. You had us all in a tizzy worrying about you! With everything that has been going on! The dreams, Krislyx! The dreams have started! This was in the prophecies! The prophecies, Krislyx! I know you know this. I know the Holy Matron taught you this. Was the Holy Matron such a poor teacher that you did not know this, Krislyx?"

"No, Matron, but I was-"

"Of course she wasn’t! So why, Krislyx. Please, I must understand. Why did you take your sweet little time getting here. And please don’t tell me you were spending time with those humans. You know they’re no good."

"Yes, Matron. I was-"

"And your brother! He was searching the docks and the back alley for you for weeks! Weeks, Krislyx! Did you know that?"

"No, Matron, but I was-"

"He was worried sick about you! Every morning he would head out and inquire about any recent Naga arrivals. And he would stay out until well past dusk awaiting for you. He loves you, you know."

"Yes, Matron, but I was-"

"Krislyx, we've had ceremonies to perform! Rituals to complete! The next blood moon is almost upon us, and we'll have barely any time to get you ready! Are you proud of yourself for this?"

"No, Matron, but I was-"

"You need to take this more seriously, Krislyx. You can't be off sailing the isles and adventuring around like you own the whole ocean! You have duties! Responsibilities!"

"Yes, Matron, but I was-"

"What, Krislyx? What? What possible excuse do you have for your behavior? For your tardiness? You've already missed the Ceremony of the New Moon and the Birth of the Second Moon. What's next? Skipping the Shavra's Blessing?"

"No Matron, but I was-"

And so it went for the poor girl as she tried to explain just what, exactly, had happened to her over the past few months.

On the voyage back to Freeport, Kris spoke with Ven often. She listened to his concerns of her growing ego - his worry that she was believing in her own myth too much.

When they got back to Freeport, she decided she needed a reminder of what she was fighting for. A reminder that it isn't about her. It's about people. All people. She left her belongings with her friends and disappeared into the streets of Freeport - into the poorest districts where she helped the local ministries provide spiritual support for the poorest of people. She took little, living off the same scraps as the street urchins did.

She even gave away her scroll of Produce Water so that a local minister might create some blessed water for his congregation. It was the least she could do.

His concerns must not have been hidden as well as he'd hoped. As upon the return from their impromptu rescue, Kris had learned, and thankfully, listened to his concerns over her without conceit, dismissal, or any other sort of reprisal. That eased his concerns quite a bit.

Upon their return to Freeport, Raven saw to all of them gaining the reward they were due. He took his share
.........
Historia, is that her real name? Raven thought. He decidedly set his thoughts toward unlikely, as Ferin, one of the older boys from the orphanage waved him along excitedly.
The days since returning the partially transformed survivors from Flind's truly evil machinations had flown by in a blur. He'd been given a share of more wealth than he'd ever had to his name before, but even so, it did not compare to what he'd dreamed of finding if he could just decipher this damnable map of his.
It was then while talking to the boys at the orphanage, some of whom had begun a game of sharing their dreams with each other, that he'd been asked what his own aspirations were. He told them about the treasure and they'd laughed, until he showed them his map. Suddenly they'd gotten wide eyes full of inspiration, and Ferin had spoken up about a woman who worked at a library who supposedly knew a great deal about many things..

And now they were here. Raven took a deep breath and grasped the handle inside.
... ....
"Damnable woman! he said to himself in frustration for well over the dozenth time in frustration since he'd met her, going over the material she'd given him. He'd been manipulated into taking yet another stack from her. Her coy smile burned in his memory as he fell for her wiles. He hated studying, but damn it all if he was going to let her get the last laugh. He grit his teeth in determination. He'd survived things that would make her curl into a ball and whimper, he couldn't let this get the better of him.

Chiruut was getting places.

His burgeoning psychic abilities expanded in both breadth and strength of effectiveness. He eagerly used said abilities in tasks in Freeport, testing them when and where he could.

Of course, this led to collatoral damage and occasionally irate employers, so said employment was not as profitable as it might have been.

But Chiruut had grown stronger and that is really what mattered in the end.

Level 5 downtime story.

Chaos is abundant. Anne the Red is spreading it all over the pirate isles, destroying lives in her wake. I will have none of it. It stops right here! Right now! Today, here in New Town, we shall turn the tides against chaos! Against the evil of Anne. Here, we will make a difference!

Kris was on a soap box amidst the crowds of New Town, the day after the ell wives had killed and harmed so many. This was where she felt comfortable, preaching to the masses and turning stories in lessons others could use to improve their lives. This was the job is a minister.

She told the story of the eel wives and how Anne had sold the relic to a wealthy merchant, how this merchant was the cause of the destruction last night. She told the story of how she, along with the heroes Ven, Chiruut, Thomas, One and Two had bravely fought off the groups of eel wives, saved people trapped in the streets, rescued soldiers and guards, and even healed the wounded. How they stopped the wives once and for all. She turned the story into a lesson of bravery, fighting against chaos and injustice, of trusting each other to accomplish great deads. Of working together to become better inside.

We must come together in faith, as a community. We must become the shining light, the beacon of hope, the structure and order so that all may thrive! We must heal. We just rebuild. And we will start with New Town!

For as long as they stayed on the island, Kris would go out and preach. When she wasn't preaching, she was organizing groups to help rebuild the community (and especially the religious temples). When she wasn't organizing, she was counseling those in need. She was showing by example what it meant to he a good person and how being good could make the world a better place.

This was her fight. This was how she wanted to combat the chaos that Anne was spreading.

And it was working.

Her inner radiance shone out, proving the validity of her words.

The people of New Town were coming together in a whole new way, and they showed there appreciation for her by providing her with the most lavish lifestyle she had ever had. She didn't ask for it. She didn't really even want it (truth he told she was almost more comfortable with the poor). But this was how these people showed their appreciation, and she didn't want to contradict.

Things went fairly well for Thomas. He now owned an actual estate, and with a few promising investments, he was set to make a nice profit. His granddaughter, Josephine, even made a visit from the mainland to finally see him. But that was when things began too sour. She was insistent that he abandon his efforts in this remote corner of the world and retire with her family back on the mainland.

Thomas, obstinate as he is, was not hearing it. They argued for a day and a night before Josephine left in a huff, chartering a ship that same day. The old man himself retired to his quarters and was not heard from for the rest of the week.

.. .. .. .. ..

The initial days following the destructive wake of the Eel wives in New Town found Raven at something of a personal loss. He didn't have a guilty conscience about killing Arctan. The man had been crazed, and things like that he'd gotten over a long time ago. But he wondered if perhaps there was something else he could have done. It certainly hadn't helped their financial situations much. Plus there was the trouble Anne was bound to cause in the mean time. If they didn't stop her then it wouldn't matter if he ever found location of the treasure or not.

Despite his idea for wanting a group name to call themselves, he didn't come up with much while working on it. Kris's name was a bit too fancy, while Chiruut's was too succinct. He would have to keep working on it.

Thomas seemed busy with acquiring the manor, Chiruut got off and away on his own, and Kris was busying herself with speaking to the masses of people. Perhaps because of the people they managed to help people during the raids, or perhaps of her own charisma, they seemed to be listening.

During the days, he stood nearby, watching Kris as she spoke to the gathering crowds. She was growing into the figure she had said she believed in. It was similar to the inquisitors of his younger years, but it was so very different at the same time. Perhaps it was because it was against an evil that was so real and relatable but he thought he could see the appeal of religion now.

He told himself it was just because the crowds were easy pickings as he moved through them, casually picking several pockets along the way as Kris preached to them. There was something about the way she spoke to them, her passion, the fires of her conviction, it made him stop and stare at her in something close to wonder.
Working: Pick pocket. Getting by lifestyle.

He rented a personal room in one of the larger inns. He didn't want to be disturbed by thin walls and he felt like a nicer, larger, bed would be best to sleep in, and it was where he could take his heartier meals. The pickings were not quite enough from the crowds, so he had to dip into his own personal savings some to pay for the difference. Buying up to the comfortable living style. 1 SS

During the nights, he took on the process of going over Arctan's ledgers to find any clue wasn't going to be done in a single night, so Raven set to work over the next week burning the midnight oil.

It was during this time that he found an interesting alchemical mix called All-night. The spicy aroma milky white liquid wasn't bad, but he quickly discovered he preferred it with cinnamon added in.

As he became a frequent customer of the apothecary, while buying several potions to replenish those he'd used, Ven was eventually steered towards some rarer items, a vial of a rose colored liquid that was said to restore ones youth temporarily! Intrigued, he took them up on the offer.

Buying 1 potion of Fleeting Youth, 3 vials of Alertness, and cinnamon spices. 1 GC, 15 SS, & 5 CP.

One day, Kris called to him after she had spoken, his heart skipped as he thought she had caught him pickpocketing, but instead she offered to teach him how to use her rifle instead. He had never used such a weapon before but took her up on her offer. As such he took to spending the afternoons with her practicing at using the rifle at differing ranges.
