"Calm down, Hoo; I'm sure... potentially sure we can work something out with this... thing." Zahd walks up the stairs, casting comprehend languages. "I've never talked with a fish before, but that certainly won't stop me now." Zahd tries to make a gesture of greeting towards the fish.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

If you like, we can say that Zahd cast comprehend languages early on in the negotiations, allowing you to read, maybe even translate the Aquan spoilers.

Stefan feels a slight shiver as Zahd's spell takes effect and he tries to communicate with the fish again.
"Let us try it one more time. Hello? Can you understand me?" the warpriest accompanies his question with some exaggerated motions. He looks like a fish flopping around out of water.

![]() |

"Try and talk to it, but if that doesn't work..." Xavier puts his hand on the hilt of his rapier. "And it would obviously be Blubberoneans!"

![]() |

Stefan, Comprehend Languages is a Personal spell, so Zahd is the only one who can understand Goldie

![]() |

Could we go with Zahd casting Comprehend languages after the fish first started speaking?
"Firstly: Stefan, you may want to step back; it seems angry... no, scared... no... It doesn't seem to like you, for whatever reason. Secondly: I can hear what it's saying, but I can't speak back, so we're going to have to find some way to communicate with it. And thirdly, from my little experience, it must be blubbernean; it just makes sense."

Hoping that opposites attract, Boomer tries to communicate using the language of his forebearers.

Sure.

"Zahd, what is it saying?"
Hoo climbs down from the shelf and runs as fast as she can through the water to try to get to a shelf on the other side (double move). If possible she attempts to climb the bookshelf to get a better vantage point, not expecting to be able to see the fish, but trying to avoid the possibility of being hit by an attack that would also hit Vossik.

"It's mostly just irritated that we couldn't understand it."
Zahd mimes out a few gestures at the fish; his hand moving away from his mouth, pointing towards himself and then shaking his head and crossing his arms. He pauses, then gestures a hand moving away from his mouth, points at the grodair and then giving two thumbs up and nodding.

Mistress Koi |

1d20 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 = 15
The fish watches Zahd for several minutes....
It smiles (an odd sight on a sofa-sized fish creature's face) and nods. It pats Zahd on the head with one thick tentacle, and then straining returns to pumping out even more water.
Wisdom checks (DC 12) everyone.

Stefan stops midway through a movement finally realizing he wasn't the target of the spell and just probably succeeded in embarrassing himself. The warpriest steps back to allow Zahd to speak.

Zahd quickly regains his wits. "I concur; we must make an attempt at diplomacy, especially considering that it can speak. It must understand some other language..."
Zahd concentrates on remembering his studies of language, and attempts a greeting in Elven, Celestial, Draconic and Sylvan.

Mistress Koi |

The creature looks at Zahd in the same way the elf might look at a lobster if it started talking to him. The creature begins to burble anew but in a markedly different tongue.

Zahd initially seems relieved, but as the grodair finishes its sentence he is struck by horror. "It wants to fully flood the archives! Well, I suppose it's not that surprising... but it's still worrying!"
I assume this might require Diplomacy
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

Mistress Koi |

Mistress Koi blinks all of her eyes at once, and looks around.
Sylvan Subtitles (because I am assuming Zahd translates at least the big picture, though he can do otherwise should he choose to) "'Settle?' In this mess!? Oh no no no. I am on an important mission for my Maker. I am charged with keeping the notorious rogue, um, er--hm. Now don't tell me! It's on the tip of my tongue. Silly name. Rhymes with 'orange', or 'rainbow' I think.... Hmmm.... ...."
This goes on for a while as she ponders.
She looks up from her thoughts after a while and says [ooc]Sylvan subtitles [b]"Oh, hello. Were we discussing something? Sorry? I don't remember getting your name. I seem to have lost my train of thought. Ah! No, I remember! Whatshisname! He won't get a way from me!" Then she waddles on her tentacles over to the railing and shouts in nearly subsonic boom "YOU HEAR THAT YOU--YOU MALEFACTOR, YOU! I'LL FLOOD YOU OUT!"
The waterworks begin again in earnest.

![]() |

"Zahd, who is she looking for and why does she need to flood the archives to do it? Stefan whispers a question as the elf translates Mistress Koi's words.
His eyes widen as she starts shouting. "WHOA! WHOA! STOP!" he holds his hands out it what he hopes isa nonthreatening manner as he shouts.

Now that she's up where he can see her, Vozzik shifts his Hypnotic Stare to her, and attempts to demoralize her with an Intimidating Glance.
Intimidate: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25
"ZAHD, TELL THIS GREAT BLOODY SPIGOT FACTORY WE'D BE HAPPY TO FETCH HER THE FOX IF THAT WILL SHUT HER UP!" The transformation in Vozzik is abrupt and possibly terrifying even to his friends, from genteel and charming to bellowing monster, as all of his intense focus shifts to dissuading Mistress Koi from her course of action.

Xavier gives Vozzik a look, and then steps closer to the creature, discreetly drawing his rapier. He doesn't look as if he's poised to attack it, just that he doesn't want to take any chances. "Zahd, you're the one who can talk to it, so I'll trust your judgement here, but if it doesn't listen, I'm going to cut this thing up into sushi!"

Boomer pulls a flask from his belt, popping the top and downing the contents. His muscles start to pulsate and bulge beneath his loose clothing. His skin thickens and his back hunches a bit. Boomer looks the grodair right in one of several of it's eyes, challenging it to move.

This would probably be the point where I should point out that if Vozzik is attacked or targeted by a spell that has an attack roll, I can trigger Mesmeric Mirror as a free action even when it's not my turn, which causes a Mirror Image-esque duplicate to appear, and you would need to roll randomly (at this level, 50% miss chance) on the attack roll.

"BONA KANINA FARO! ESTAS LA ĈEJO POR TI!" roars the fish.
The fish squirts a blast of water in Vozzik's direction that is strong enough to knock one of the bookshelves along the wall behind him over, it tips into the next shelf tipping it into the the next shelf, and so on until....
**CRASH!!!** The echoes go on for sometime time, and the water grows turbulent.
50% miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 37 Assuming Vozzik uses his mesmerism trick.
This in turn allows those who are armed, and in range to make Attacks of Opportunity against Mistress Koi, if they so choose.

"RRAAAAAAH!"
Hoo fires an arrow at Mistresss koi.
Sure, Hoo had readied her action. Don't forget there's a -4 to fire into melee, and another -4 because of all the soft cover standing in the way (unless your PC has the right feats, of course). It didn't really matter this time, but keep it in mind for later.
Xavier immediately jumps into action, deftly swinging at the fish with his rapier.
Also, there is cover granted by hard corners. Again, it didn't matter this time.
An arrow streaks out from behind Boomer's left ear and embeds itself into a text upon the nearest shelf entitled Art of the Deal. Xazier's rapier bends against the thing's scales.
Realizing just how precarious his position is in-between the enraged piscean and his own allies, Boomer lashes out with his hammer, gaining the creature's attention. All four of the fish's eyes lock onto the alchemist. Then water wells up in those big glassy eyes, and runs down the fish's jowls like mountain streams. Then she begins hysterically bawling.
"AL MI! ATAKTO! MI ESTAS ATAKTITA!" The fish bellows in her deep basso into Boomer's face spraying him with seawater.

Xavier runs around the other side of the bookshelves. There, he draws upon Cayden's blessing to help the party, and ease his hangover.
Casting bless. It gets everyone on the mezzanine, but I think that Vozzik and Hoo are out of range. Everyone else gets a +1 to attack rolls and saves against fear. I think Xavier may also provoke an AoO by moving? Also, he should be flanking with Stefan now.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

... I think Xavier may also provoke an AoO by moving? ....
Technically no, because cover works both ways, but because Xavier wouldn't have gotten one either we'll let the big fish have one go against him to make it fair.
tentacle slap v Xavier (cover, shaken): 1d20 + 6 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 6 - 2 - 4 = 20 damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

confirm?: 1d20 + 6 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (6) + 6 - 2 - 4 = 6 additional damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Trip?: 1d20 + 11 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (8) + 11 - 2 - 4 = 13 Hit, no crit. not tripped.
Also, he should be flanking with Stefan now.
And no, because of cover. Do you have 5 more feet of movement?
The fish slaps Xavier hard on the back, nearly tripping him up.

Boomer's AOO hit is supplemented with an additional 2 precision damage from Vozzik's Painful Stare as a free action, and his Mirror Duplicate continues to be in effect for another 19 rounds.
Vozzik's focus barely seems to flicker as the immense jet of water barely misses him. Instead he shouts "My destiny is not so easily subsumed, Grodie!" and casts Cause Fear, DC 16.
Don't forget her will save is lowered by the Hypnotic Stare

Hoo realizes that she's no longer in a great situation to attack from a distance and attempts to leap from bookshel to bookshelf on the way to the mezzanine
Based on my understanding, it would be possible to jump the 5 or so foot gap between the bookshelf in the top right corner of the room to the railing at the top left corner of the mezzanine. This seems to me like an acrobatics roll, and probably requires a double move.
