At first Boomer thinks it is a reflection of the light ahead, and then he sees it the neon-blue eel-looking thing by his elbow as he is passing the stone support pillar. There is something about it that makes it hard to focus on. It is just floating there just beneath the water, tiny mouth open to nip at him. He recoils on instinct and the thing misses twists and slaps him with its tail. A jolt runs though him as if he had been electrocuted, or healed with magic, or maybe climaxed during sex. Not sure. The rules are worded soooooooooooooooooooooooo badly (it's not like a gaze attack... that helps a lot. Nor is it like a charge, or an acrobatics (jump) check, or a treant, or green slime or grapple check or any of another thousand rules) that I can't tell. If it helps any, I should have had eyes on it in the previous turn when I said Vozzik attempted to Stare Hypnotically at it. By my read, as long as I remain within 30 feet after I first do the stare, the telepathic connection remains intact, but there's an FAQ (or Campaign Clarification, I can't recall which) that says I can't add Painful Stare damage when there's concealment on my target, so that's a thing.
"Stars above, Xavier! What part of 'Stay Back' was unclear to you?" Vozzik sludges forward one more square and readies again for when Color Spray could fire to get the worm without hitting his allies.

I am pretty sure Boomer can't move that far--deep bog movement, and all. He can probably still get into a position to throw though. Does "precise" mean that it doesn't splash or is that just Precise Shot? Nevermind. I looked it up.
20% miss chance: 1d100 ⇒ 63

The bomb falls short and to the left of the target.
The bomb goes *Ploosh* into the water. Is there any splash on that bomb? I'm guessing there is because of "explosive" tag which if I recall means a 10' splash. Which three spaces (5' cubes) were you sparing?

I'm afraid you elided the portion of the comment that the FAQ clarifies and left the part it doesn't: Painful Stare doesn't proc because it's precision damage, which concealment always negates.

[I'm trying to understand how the Bomb missed. There is no range penalty (adjusted location) and the creature is flying, so it does not get the partial cover from the bog.]

The World's Most Interesting GM |

[I'm trying to understand how the Bomb missed. There is no range penalty (adjusted location) and the creature is flying, so it does not get the partial cover from the bog.]
All correct but, throwing a bomb is a ranged attack. Ranged attacks into melee (where one or more foes threaten one another--like Xavier does) suffer a -4 penalty without something like the feat Precise Strike to mitigate it.

![]() |

[Still seems like a 15 should hit a voidworm as there are no other penalties assigned. Either way, there is splash damage; excluding Xavier's space. 5 fire damage.]

The World's Most Interesting GM |

[Still seems like a 15 should hit a voidworm as there are no other penalties assigned. Either way, there is splash damage; excluding Xavier's space. 5 fire damage.]
This... is a 'named' voidworm. And technically it now also has cover from the pillar.
Is that the only square Boomer wants to exclude? I think you get 3 total. Make sure you state those excluded squares in advance otherwise I'm going to have to take an educated guess.

![]() |

He is just interested in not hurting his friends. He doesn't care about the library.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

I get that, but that means Boomer will have to plan for misses as well. For instance, with a 10' splash and the miss roll I rolled earlier Vozzik would be taking 5 fire damage.... Now I am not going to use that roll, I'm going to reroll it, so--final answer time--what specific spaces does Boomer want to protect? Admittedly, Xavier is probably number one here, but I need to know if there are any others before I roll, and only Boomer can tell me.

![]() |

The precise bombs discovery does not have an effect on a miss. Everyone is fair game.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

That makes sense (having to be "Precise" and all).
splash miss: 1d8 ⇒ 4
**BOOM!!**
There's a big fiery explosion next to the bookcase that catches Xavier and the glowworm! Blasted bits of paper flutter down like snowflakes or perhaps volcanic ash. When Xavier can see again he sees the little worm-thing briefly blown into an amorphous free-floating inkblot that quickly spirals itself back into the shape of a snake or eel once more. Reconstituting it itself before the halfling's eyes. Fast healing/regen effect Almost playfully it lunges at him again. Provoking an AoO.
teal nip v Xavier: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17 damage: 1d3 ⇒ 1 miss
teal tail slap v Xavier: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2 hit
The thing lands a tail slap to Xavier face that to the halfling feels like Galtan-kissing an electricity elemental, while simultaneously being hit with a tuna.
