Welcome
Time to get Red Box DND (or for you who may remember? The old Erol Otus box DND)
I'm going put you guys up against the darkness. I will NOT be that old killer DM but I'm not planning on pulling punches either... except in one case of a published monster stat block I plan to use but disagree with.
Be smart. Be brave. Be prepared. Be aware that running isn't always a bad idea... and that the hero's don't always win.
Probably not a bad idea to have a back up character concept (don't make them). I'll insert any replacement character ASAP as needed.
You're going to start broke. But not unequipped.
Feel free to take the basic equipment pack from the PHB by class. With one exception. No chainmail. Scale Mail is fine... I think this only impacts our fighter. I will throw chainmail out there later (and other stuff) but want a lower equipment feel. As our fighter has decent Dex, mechanically he won't suffer for my 'artistic license'.
That said? If you want to roll for starting money, there are no restrictions. But if you roll, take the results. As a bonus, have your main weapon for free. Our sorcerer for instance wants an axe ;)
Don't buy stuff to resell later.
Initially I won't track arrows and food/water BUT it's going to be part of the game later.
The game, as advertised, is B5, Horror on the Hill but I'm gonna give it a Dungeon Crawl Classics/Warhammer Fantasy RP feel and depart from the module as written where needed while keeping a lot of it, which was pretty decent.
Levelling will be slow and milestone based.
-----
I'm hoping for a post a day. A post every two days at the outside. Weekends and holidays are at your own discretion.
Of course real life trumps game. Work, and Sickness and/or RL pressures take precedence but do let us know.

Assuming I can roll here. I'm looking over cleric and druid options atm, should be ready tomorrow.
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 4, 2, 2) + 2 = 12 10
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 1, 2, 2) + 2 = 8 7
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 4) + 2 = 13 12
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (1, 2, 4, 3) + 2 = 12 11
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 1, 4, 4) + 2 = 13 12
4d4 + 2 ⇒ (3, 3, 4, 3) + 2 = 15 12
Hmm. Array again!

Kalia Stonebreaker |

And here she is.
Also, going to roll for money and take me a maul (don't want to rip off ole' Goetrek too much =P ).
3d4 ⇒ (2, 1, 2) = 5x10=50 gp. I'll post my final purchases when I finish with them.
EDIT: Okay here's what I purchased. I had 1 gp left over, so not uber:
Runic Tattoos (Spellcasting focus; glow slightly when she casts spells) -10 gp
Fine Clothes -15 gp
Maul free
Backpack -2 gp
Traveler's Clothes -2 gp
Mason's Tools -10 gp
Shield -10 gp

Thanks again for giving me an opportunity to play.
Some quick thoughts before long-delayed sleep.
Iocundius Paulum, human Cleric of Order, Servant of Law. He has lost the love of his life to marauding creatures and since has dedicated himself to crushing their chaotic bands.
Order domain is from the Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica. Leans towards melee with some decent healing and support options. If that doesn't suit, I can make the concept work with War domain.
Thoughts?

Gaelden the Lost |

Main Weapon Free: Warhammer
Equipment from class:
(A) Longbow
(B) Crossbow sold for 12 and shield bought for 10
(C) An explorer’s pack and four javelins
Equipment from background:
A staff, a hunting trap, a trophy from an animal you killed, a set of traveler's clothes, and a belt pouch containing 10 gp
Gold: 3d4 ⇒ (3, 2, 2) = 7 35
Total Gold: 47

Gaelden the Lost |

Missed the part about reselling. So no Crossbow, instead 2 hand axes and I’ll use the gold on the shield

Already said yes to two UA classes... so, yeah, go for it.
It does seem like you'll be generating a free reaction attack semi often in higher level games buuuut then again you only have two spell slots atm.
At this point it's not going to be broken.

You don't get equipment from class/background if you roll. As it may not have been clear, I'll let you retcon if you want
So
Class and background equipment. Limit of scalemail for armour.
Or
Free weapon plus roll for starting equipment gold. Buy what you want. Can't resell stuff bought.
In either case you'll be starting with no gold in hand... flat broke and hungry for funds.

I present Iocundius Paulum, Vengeful Servant of Law.
A former healer in the city watch, he couldn't save his wife from being killed by goblinoids. So he's gone into a personal crusade to bring harsh Law down on them all.
In combat, he'll aim to buff the others, spurring them on with bless and Order domain's Voice of Authority, and healing as necessary. He has a mace, shield, and crossbow, along with Toll the Dead, so he'll be well able to hand out damage of his own.
The background is a mix of city watch, soldier, and haunted one, giving Athletics and Perception. Intimidation is from Order domain.
Let me know if anything needs tweaking or explaining.
Race: Human Background: Vengeful Servant of Law Class: Cleric of Order 1
STR 14 (+2) DEX 13 (+1) CON 14 (+2) INT 11 (+0) WIS 16 (+3) CHA 9 (-1)

AC 11
Initiative +1
Speed: 30' Land
Proficiency +2
Alignment: LN
Armor: Light armor, medium armour, heavy armour, shields
Weapons: All simple weapons
Tools: None
Saving Throws: Wisdom +5, Charisma +1
Skills: Athletics +4, Insight +5, Intimidation +1, Perception +5, Religion +2
Languages: Common, Giant, Goblin, Orcish
Class Features:
Spellcasting
As a conduit for divine power, you can cast cleric spells.
Cantrips
At 1st level, you know three cantrips of your choice from the cleric spell list. You learn additional cleric cantrips of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Cantrips Known column of the Cleric table.
Spell Slots
The Cleric table shows how many spell slots you have to cast your spells of lst level and higher. To cast one of these spells, you must expend a slot of the spell's level or higher. You regain all expended spell slots when you finish a long rest.
You prepare the list of cleric spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the cleric spell list. When you do so, choose a number of cleric spells equal to your Wisdom modifier + your cleric level (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots.
For example, if you are a 3rd-level cleric, you have four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots. With a Wisdom of 16, your list of prepared spells can include six spells of 1st or 2nd level, in any combination. If you prepare the 1st-level spell Cure Wounds, you can cast it using a 1st-level or 2nd-level slot. Casting the spell doesn't remove it from your list of prepared spells.
You can change your list of prepared spells when you finish a long rest. Preparing a new list of cleric spells requires time spent in prayer and meditation: at least 1 minute per spell level for each spell on your list.
Spellcasting Ability
Wisdom is your spellcasting ability for your cleric spells. The power of your spells comes from your devotion to your deity. You use your Wisdom whenever a cleric spell refers to your spellcasting ability. In addition, you use your Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for a cleric spell you cast and when making an attack roll with one.
Spell save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier
Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier
Ritual Casting
You can cast a cleric spell as a ritual if that spell has the ritual tag and you have the spell prepared.
Spellcasting Focus
You can use a holy symbol as a spellcasting focus for your cleric spells.
Domain Spells
Each domain has a list of spells-its domain spells that you gain at the cleric levels noted in the domain description. Once you gain a domain spell, you always have it prepared, and it doesn't count against the number of spells you can prepare each day.
If you have a domain spell that doesn't appear on the cleric spell list, the spell is nonetheless a cleric spell for you.
Cantrips
Guidance(C)
Spare the Dying
Toll the Dead
1st Level
Bless(C)
Healing Word
Order Domain Spells
Cleric Level Spells
1st Command, Heroism
Bonus Proficiencies
When you choose this domain at 1st level, you gain proficiency with heavy armor. You also gain proficiency in the Intimidation or Persuasion skill (your choice).
Voice of Authority
Starting at 1st level, you can invoke the power of law to drive an ally to attack. If you cast a spell with a spell slot of 1st level or higher and target an ally with the spell, that ally can use their reaction immediately after the spell to make one weapon attack against a creature of your choice that you can see.
If the spell targets more than one ally, you choose the ally who can make the attack.
Race Features:
Ability Score Increase. Your ability scores each increase by 1.
Feats:
War Caster
Prerequisite: The ability to cast at at least one spell
You have practiced casting spells in the midst of combat, learning techniques that grant you the following benefits:
You have advantage on Constitution saving throws that you make to maintain your concentration on a spell when you take damage.
You can perform the somatic components of spells even when you have weapons or a shield in one or both hands.
When a hostile creature's movement provokes an opportunity attack from you, you can use your reaction to cast a spell at the creature, rather than making an opportunity attack. The spell must have a casting time of 1 action and must target only that creature.
Coins & Gems:
GP 0
EP 0
SP 0
CP 0
Mace
Scale mail
Light crossbow and 20 bolts
Explorer's pack
Shield
Holy symbol of Law
A uniform in the style of your unit and indicative of your rank
A horn with which to summon help
A set of manacles
A pouch
Items acquired in game:
Skill Proficiencies: Athletics, Perception
Tool Proficiencies: None
Languages: Giant, Orcish
Feature: Specialty - Healer
During your time in the city watch, you had a specific role to play in your unit.
Feature: Watcher's Eye
Your experience in enforcing the law, and dealing with lawbreakers, gives you a feel for local laws and criminals. You can easily find the local outpost of the watch or a similar organization, and just as easily pick out the dens of criminal activity in a community, although you're more likely to be welcome in the former locations rather than the latter.
Personality Trait 1: I don't run from evil. Evil runs from me.
Personality Trait 2: I've lost too many friends and loved ones, and I'm slow to make new ones.
Ideal: Harsh justice. Destroy the monsters before they can hurt anyone else and to exorcise my own demons.
Bond: A terrible guilt consumes me. I hope that I can find redemption through my actions.
Flaw: My hatred of my enemies is blind and unreasoning.
Iocundius Paulum was a decent man and a city watch healer who was pushed too far by his wife's murder by goblinoids. He was driven to furious vengeance and drove away his remaining friends and family. Feeling unreasoning guilt over not saving his wife, Iocundius threw himself into the harsher tenets of Law and pushed to hunt down every goblinoid. He expanded this to include other monstrous humanoids such as orcs, even learning their foul tongues to gain an advantage. He would gladly kill every last one of these creatures if given the power. Until then, he will content himself with joining with others to do what he can.
Iocundius stands 5' 9" tall and weighs 155lb. He has the dark hair and pale skin of his region, with pronounced and visible cheekbones. Since his wife's death, his face has become more gaunt and dark rings lie under his eyes. He clearly has not been eating or sleeping properly.
He used to be more personable and jovial before his wife was killed. But his presence is somehow...more...than it was. He is man driven to accomplish great deeds, even if he is more dour in his manner.
"So sleep soundly in your beds tonight
For judgement falls upon you at first light"

Gaelden the Lost |

35 gold
10 for Warhammer (doesn’t need upkeep like a sword or axe. Therefore a good main weapon for being in the wilderness)
10 for 2x Handaxes (for throwing, and chopping through things as needed)
5 for Shield
10 for Explorer's Pack (Includes a backpack, a bedroll, a mess kit, a tinderbox, 10 torches, 10 days of rations, and a waterskin. The pack also has 50 feet of hempen rope strapped to the side of it. )
0 gold left

Hello all, looking forward to gaming with you all. I took the starting equipment for a Bard.
Varis... how have you got 43hp? :D
Also
Can everyone set up their characters status bar with something similar to Varis, Gaelden etc?
Also
One thing - your characters are not strangers. You know, like and respect each other... it may not be perfect, and be grudging or it may be a friendly rivalry but you're one team.
I am adding an additional bond to all characters, namely 'Band of Brothers' - You know each other, have adventured together before and trust each other.

Aelwulf |

Longsword, Shield, Scale mail, light crossbow and 20 bolts, explorer's pack, ritual book, A bottle of black ink, a quill, a small knife, a letter from a dead colleague posing a question you have not yet been able to answer, a set of common clothes, and a belt pouch containing 0 gp :(
For clarification I am going Monster Hunter.

Kalia Stonebreaker |

Ya, I'm all good to go (unless there's something else you see that you think I need to address).
Also:
Varis... how have you got 43hp? :D
Looks like someone made their character 5th level =P

Yup just an older character I used in another game, I believe I had mentioned that. Haven't updated the profile yet, the link I posted to my character sheet on Myth weavers is up to date though.

Iocundius Paulum |

I'm not able to access the Roll20 map from my phone so it'll be tomorrow before I can check the map.
I'll put up a provisional post, assuming Iocundius is a bit back from the front line, and at least one melee type with a spare reaction. :)

You're on the front line... such as it is, but the furthest away from the action.

Iocundius Paulum |

Perfect, cheers. I've made a conditional post in gameplay.

I can't move any tokens.

Vicious Mockery is a great cantrip, mainly for granting disadvantage. The damage is delicious psychic, almost-never resisted gravy.

Iocundius Paulum |

A generator which 'translates' common into goblin, or at least words that sound like it.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |

This was written by the GM on another game that uses Roll 20
On the EDIT page of the character sheet, the CAN BE EDITED & CONTROLLED BY setting needs to set to the individual player or to all players. That should allow the players to move their characters. The easy method is to allow all players to control all characters. In a PbP game, it isn't as vital that each control only their own character unless he is using dynamic lighting settings.

Iocundius Paulum |

First fight survived!
Liking the hints of character personalities showing through actions and not all that many words yet. Looking forward to seeing more.

Iocundius Paulum |

Cheers, Helaman! The atmosphere already is really engaging.

Varis Matrel |

Yes very! Honestly I thought it was odd to throw us right into a fight with initiative and no real idea of why we were there or what we were doing. But it's actually working and this is moving faster than any of my other games. :)

Iocundius Paulum |

Iocundius isn't interested in taking any of the items for himself.
I propose a basic loot system.
If only one person can make use of an item, they get it.
If two or more people can use that item and want it, they negotiate or roll off. The next time, the person(s) who didn't get an item before get priority.
Any items sold, split the good. This includes older replaced gear.
The idea is to keep the entire party getting stronger to keep us all in good shape.
Thoughts?
