Tiny's set up is perfectly timed. His claws break through the stony hide, and then some! Unfortunately the follow up doesn't do it. FORT: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20 It keeps its head in the game though.

Þóðᛞrekkr's angle isn't right and his teeth simply scrape.

Charlie gets a solid arrow in too, just before Chark's force weapon does the same.

The party eyes the stairs, which lead down to the base of the tower. With mutual nods, they head in.

At about halfway down, the smell of a campfire reaches you. It's also enough to see that there's a fire in the room - as the light of the fire takes over from the natural light outside.

Near the bottom, the scrap of claw against stone makes everyone stop. A sibilant voice from inside calls out,

Charlie looks behind him to see if anyone understands what the creature is saying. "We are from the town. Do you speak common?"

The reply doesn't need translation as the party hears the sounds of heavy clubs being taken up! A few steps down the stairs and you can see a quartet of the same degenerate creatures. One of them is wrangling a brightly colored dinosaur. Each foot is armed with a large, sickle-shaped claw!

Haldan steps forward, and into the miasama of stink surrounding the xulgath! FORT: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (13) + 8 = 21. He keeps his lunch down, and replies with a potent spell. REF: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27, but the warrior completely dodges the crack!

Dendillion starts up a song as he studies the Deinonychus. A quick dinosaur with a penchant for moving swiftly and clawing its foes, often faster than people realize...

The xulgaths bark back and forth, this time in a different language. They immediately form a coordinated defense to prevent you from entering the tower. Two on the wings stride closer and hurl javelins at the front line in time with the dinosaur tamer:

ALL characters within 30' must attempt a DC 16 Fortitude save. On a failure, the creature is sickened 1, and on a critical failure, the creature also takes a –5-foot status penalty to its Speeds for 1 round. While within the aura, the creature takes a –2 circumstance penalty to saves to recover from the sickened condition. A creature that succeeds at its save is temporarily immune to all xulgaths’ stenches for 1 minute.

Chark tries to resist, but bile gets caught in her throat. She retches to try and correct that.

Most of breakfast comes up as she does. She misses Charlie and Tiny's wolf, but Haldan's pooka is less fortunate. In misery, she wipes her mouth and whispers Sorry... to Hermann.

Weakly, she conjures up a ball of white-yellow flame and hurls it desperately at Red.
