"Unless those things had hands, something else set this snare. Keep alert--I can get myself free."
GM H, how hard would it be to slip free while still holding onto the rope so Tere doesn't fall?
GM Hawthwile |
Sounds like an Escape Artist or attack roll/damage with slashing weapon to free himself and an Acrobatics check to not fall on his head.
Banon |
"Terror." Banon suggests. "Happens to everyone, sometime."
Alaric Ysande |
Alaric walks up to where Tere is, and slashes at the ropes with his scimitar. "Be ready... roll with the fall."

Once Tere is out, he yells out, "Shredder! Where are you, you dumb dinosaur? Get back here!"
GM Hawthwile |
Tere gracefully returns to the ground, helped by Telka and Alaric. As they wait, Thran and Jethro notice that the weapons on two of the statues look to be detachable and are radiating magical auras. Closer examination reveals one to be a +1 longspear, while the other is a hammer of lightning (functionally a javelin of lightning).
With both Shredder and Tere back and ready to travel, the Pathfinders cross the bridge and head into what looks to be a large ancient city, the ruined remains being reclaimed by the jungle. Remnants of statues stand faceless amidst the trees, their bases covered with bone and feather fetishes. Alaric spots a fresco decorating a leaning wall, the faded pictures of dwarves covered with a much simpler painting of a ferocious golden dragon with wings outspread. Banon and Tere spot several sprung noose-traps and a partially-dug pit, but no hazards (completely) block the trail the Pathfinders follow. Telka's spell dissipates and he descends slowly to the ground, but not before spotting several small reptilian creatures through the underbrush a few hundred yards away.
The trail ends at what remains of the ruins' heart, a structure that may have once been a shrine. Demolished walls encircle an ancient dais, atop which a shattered anvil-shaped altar lies defaced with dried blood, chalk markings, and other detritus. The bones of dozens of humanoid creatures are scattered about the building, along with the larger skeletal remains of what may be wyverns or drakes that are marred with deep claw marks. Behind the altar, a large stairwell stained with the blood of countless creatures descends into some dark vault below. A trio of kobolds stand guard around the altar, singing and chanting, while several miners stand in the stairwell with their wrists bound and their faces painted in red and white patterns, a single yellow wing decorating their forehead.
Getting within 10 ft of the building will require a Stealth check to not be spotted - beyond this, the kobolds' focus on their ritual allows the Pathfinders to move without notice. Spellcasting or other loud sounds will still likely catch their attention. Tokens have been placed off the map - go ahead and place as desired.

"Agreed. I'll go dino, and me and Shredder can rush them!" says Alaric. If there is time, Alaric will cast greater magic fang on both Shredder and himself, and then go dino.
GM Hawthwile |
@Telka - it's been a bit over 10 minutes since the party left the bridge.
With over half the party plunging straight into battle, there's not enough time for Alaric to move away, cast his spells, and return - and if he casts them here, it could very easily alert the kobolds and ruin any chance Tere might have had at sneaking closer.
As Tere creeps along the wall to the south, Telka, Thran, and Banon move in from the east. The sound of clanking armor and snapping branches catch the kobolds' ears, and they quickly turn around and spot the Pathfinders approaching!

@Alaric - that certainly brings up interesting questions, like “how loud is it for a man to become a dinosaur?” Given that wild shape is a supernatural ability (and how the Venture-Captain Osprey’s transformations are described in older scenarios), I’m going to say Alaric could have changed into dinosaur form without having alerted the kobolds.

...striking Telka squarely in the chest and draining the strength from his limbs.
Alright, I would like the opinions of our resident Venture Agents and experienced GMs. Telka's Strength is now 3, meaning his maximum load is 30 lbs. Given that his full-plate alone is 50 lbs, his handy haversack is 5 lbs, and his heavy wooden shield is 10 lbs, he is technically past what he could lift off the ground (60 lbs). However, he is a dwarf and thus has the following racial trait:
Dwarves have a base speed of 20 feet, but their speed is never modified by armor or encumbrance.
Is Telka stuck to the ground unable to move from the weight of his gear, or can he ignore the penalty for carrying more than his maximum load? Let's take this to the discussion thread - I would love to hear your input.

Dirty Trick, CE vs CMD 17: 1d20 + 5 - 1 ⇒ (13) + 5 - 1 = 17
...and poor Shredder gets some in his eyes. Yipping gleefully, the kobold steps along the wall and beckons tauntingly for Tere to follow her. From the stairwell, the miners watch in fear.
Shredder will need to take a move action to remove the blindness. I would assume this does not require a Handle Animal check. (What trick would you even use, and what animal would willingly sit still with grit in their eyes?)

@Telka, that sounds fine to me. And for everyone's information, that's exactly how I want rerolls to be used for saving throws.
The kobold is visibly cowed by Banon's threat, but dodges Thran's spear and Tere's blade by tucking against the wall. Drained of his strength and weighed down by his armor, Telka blesses his companions (though the spell doesn't quite reach Banon). Jethro's spell slams into the collections of spellcasting kobolds, but it barely seems to phase them.

...and while Thran has enough time to avoid the worst of the blast, Alaric and Telka sizzle in the electricity (as does one of the unconscious kobolds on the floor, leaving behind nothing but a charred corpse). The other kobold yelps as the lightning blasts out part of the wall behind her before stepping away from Tere, pulling out a glowing orange bottle from her belt, and gulping down the contents. From behind Banon, two of the kobolds stir and cry out, rubbing their eyes as they slowly stand and try to find their weapons from the ground.
