Witch's Winter Holiday

Thran's rock knocks one of the climbers down her vine as Telka and Banon guide the Pathfinders off the path and into the jungle. The narrow trail runs along the side of the ravine before turning back towards the valley floor - and the thundering footsteps of their dinosaur pursuer! A dense thicket of shrubbery and trees ahead offers a chance of escape, if only for a moment.

You could try to remember which of the plants are the most supple and bendable with a Knowledge (nature) check, or squeeze through the trees with an Escape Artist check.

Hmm, as I recall, these plants belong to the genus Flexibllia, which, as you probably recall, was first noted by the sages of ancient Jistka - though there is some debate about whether they were simply "borrowing" from the work of earlier Tian scholars - it all depends on whether one translates the Tian rune Xibl as "often" or one translates it as "frequent" - though it's worth noting that there are some who prefer to translate it as "mustard" - but that's a question for another day. In any case, the real significance of the genus was not recognized until the Azlanti janitor prodigy Octavian one day ---" Jethro continues on like this until his comrades pull him out of the path of the crashing dinosaur.

Alaric snaps at Telka's hand as he is about to reach out to a very nasty thornbush, and guides him to a safer path.

Witch's Winter Holiday

With the help of Jethro's lecture and Tere's deftness, even Telka is able to make it through the dense copse. On the other side, the ravine wall - and perhaps safety - loom ahead. Telka's keen eyes spot a potential route of rocky handholds up the sheer cliff face - as well as a strange glowing fruit.

Knowledge (nature) DC 18:
This is a Kaava sun pear, a very rare fruit found only in the Kaava region. It glows with a soft yellow light like a candle for up to 8 hours after being picked. If eaten during that time, the fruit grants the effects of cure moderate wounds and neutralize poison.

Getting the fruit, however, will be no easy task. A PC must elect to roll this obstacle check twice and take the lower result, then make an additional Acrobatics or Climb check to snatch the pear.

The Pathfinders are distracted, however, by a sudden burst of movement from the vegetation to the left. Thran recognizes the woman he struck with a rock on the vines leading a pack of similarly-garbed adventurers out of the trees and towards the same set of handholds!

A pair of loud cracks and the sound of falling trees announce a third party as the dinosaur pushes her way through the trees. She roars at the sight of so many people trapped between her and the ravine wall as she begins her advance!

You could try to beat up the rival agents with an Attack roll, or perhaps you can "persuade" the angry dinosaur that they are better prey with a Handle Animal check.

Witch's Winter Holiday

Thran once again takes the lead, scrambling up the rocky cliff face and setting down ropes for the other Pathfinders. Seeing her prey out of her reach, the tyrannosaurus roars in frustration before turning her attention to the rival adventurers scattered across the ravine floor. As she chases them back into the jungle, her ground-shaking footsteps eventually fall silent.

That was a success on every single obstacle. Well done, Pathfinders!

The return trip to Krihirik village takes several hours (4, to be precise), but the jungle remains quiet and the journey (relatively) uneventful. (Jethro managed to almost drown again during a stream crossing, and Tere found a new type of wasp that apparently found the smell of his armor irresistible.) Easily overcoming these minor obstacles, the Pathfinders find themselves back at the grippli's village.

At the outskirts of the Krihirik village, grippli possessions lie scattered about as if they were dropped or tossed carelessly from the dwellings above. Where before gripplis hurried about the village, now none are to be found. Shouting from the direction of the elders’ hut carries through the empty jungle - “Find the others!” - followed by the loud crash of something falling to the jungle floor.
