I want to say 'Experience Points' since there is a slow path, a fast path, PCs are obsessed with it and relying on it is effectively a lesson since we gain more abilities. Except it doesn't fit IC, lol.
Gorkhan shrugs. I'm not sure, but let's think it through. Time... People sometimes feel that time passes quickly or slowly depending on the circumstances. Do people become obsessed with time? I suppose patience wouldn't be a virtue if it were easy. All right. Is 'relying on' time a 'well practiced lesson'? What does that even mean? Or is it merely the counter to the previous statement where, it's an obsession. So the effort is required to 'wait for time to pass'? I don't know."
"Say, where are the other folks? Did they all already get the answer and get in, or did they fail and get eaten?"
Anala, Nixie Bard |
"Ahh, that is a good suggestion Arvin..." Anala favours him with a smile. "It certainly fits the last line more than any other suggestion, but I don't know that anyone really obsesses over the tides. Hmmm."
She looks to Gorkhan as he starts trying to puzzle it out "People are certainly obsessed with time, or rather the loss of it. All those stories of old wizards turning to necromancy and other dark arts to escape their death. I'd say that's obsessing over time. Relying on time could just be as simple as having patience, which is certainly a difficult thing at times, requiring much practice. It is a somewhat obscure way to phrase it, but it is a riddle after all."
When the door comments on the other folks again she just pauses to glare back at him. "I already asked him when we arrived. The things half-insane whatever it is..."
"Love... phah! There are too many answers it could be... I think the last line is the key here. Relying on love, on time, on money or wealth... Even someone you love can betray you though..." she mutters
Anala, Nixie Bard |
I was waiting for the other two to agree (and deliver the answer themselves :p). In the interest of moving this thing along...
Anala looks at the others as silence descends after their agreement, before finally sighing. She turns around to face the door once again. "Our answer is Time."
Gorkhan Trask |
Sorry, I thought I had posted.
Gorkhan draws his shortswords in preparation of an unfortunate reaction to the answer.
Gate |
"That answer is to many questions... As is this one, and it is correct."
He swings open and in you look to see a nothing but darkness. You also notice that on the inside of the door you can still see the mouth on the gate in the same way you could on the outside.
He smiles as you enter.
Welcome to the dungeon guys :)

"Dark?" Gorkhan says, confused, before realizing that his vision underwater seems better than what it would be on the surface. "Don't worry I can see here."

Dancing Lights
School evocation [light]; Level bard 0, sorcerer/wizard 0
casting Time 1 standard action
components V, S
range medium (100 f. + 10 f./level) So 150 feet.
Effect Up to four lights, all within a 10-f.-radius area
duration 1 minute (D) So she would have had to cast the spell again once the door opened, but it's a cantrip, and thus at will.
Saving Throw none; Spell resistance no
Depending on the version selected, you create up to four lights that resemble lanterns or torches (and cast that amount of light), or up to four glowing spheres of light (which look like will-o’-wisps), or one faintly glowing, vaguely humanoid shape. The dancing lights must stay within a 10-foot-radius area in relation to each other but otherwise move as you desire (no concentration required): forward or back, up or down, straight or turning corners, or the like. The lights can move up to 100 feet per round.
A light winks out if the distance between you and it exceeds the spell’s range.
You can only have one dancing lights spell active at any one time. If you cast this spell while another casting is still in effect, the previous casting is dispelled. If you make this spell permanent, it does not count against this limit.
Dancing lights can be made permanent with a permanency spell.
So four lights, each as bright as a torch that she can send up to 150 feet in front of her :) With low-light vision that means she can see uhh... 80 feet if the lights are in her square, further if she sends them in front of the group. It's a pretty handy spell.

Anala looks sad once more at the site of the bodies, swimming a little closer, trying to figure out whether it was the door that 'ate' them, or something else.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15
When she discovers that none of them seem familiar at all she is simply further perplexed, glancing back at the door with a sigh.

two gillmen and a merfolk. They are carrying: shortsword, trident and a net. The two gillmen are wearing leather armor and merfolk is wearing (fish)hide armor. Or at least thats what you can see.
The shark smells dead tissue and nothing abnormal about them other then the fact they are dead.
Mind you that the gate is still behind you guys
Gorkhan Trask |
Gorkhan looks around carefully. "Well, at least it's only three of them and not the whole group of 'champions' clogging the passage." He then moves closer to the bodies to examine them, and their items, better. "Considering how they all crowded in and grabbed as much as they could carry, if these folks have been picked clean of anything of value, then I expect they could have been one of the earlier entrants, otherwise one of the later ones."
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (17) + 12 = 29

::You have nothing to worry about from them, Anala. The dead aren't nearly as bad as they look.:: Livyathan thinks to the nixie softly, believing her to be worried about the bodies themselves rather than what killed them. ::It's when they start moving again you need to worry. Unless they're breathing too, that usually means they came back to life.::
Gorkhan Trask |
Is the ring labelled?
"It seems this one wasn't completely picked clean. I found some food and a ring. Anyhow, I think we can move on. Let's just be careful, in case they died from some form of trap."
Anala, Nixie Bard |
It happens to all of us Darvis :) Sorry for the delay in posting too, Christmas and work and such.
Anala needs no encouragement to move on from the bodies, quickly falling into place behind Olrune, occasionally brushing Olrune's rough skin with her fingers.
