Jek nods at Nik and then at Rinika. "Right then.... traps... something more sinister." He looks at the dangling corpse. "Like this? All these things wouldn't happen to be magical, would they?"

Nik knows that the bite marks are from a kyton eating the corpse and not the spiders.

Rinika finds no traps allowing the items to be recovered safely. Nansi alights on the shield and the spiders in the room crawl towards it.

Rinika waves off Jek's look at the corpse and pokes at the spiders around the shield a bit. "Nansi, what's with all your little spider bros? Where are they coming from? And who are the wicked looters? Is that me?"

She'll look around with Detect Magic and try to puzzle out the shield. Spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

Gibbarren observes the scene with Nansi dispassionately but answers Rinika this time, ”I have it on good authority that Quimath, the master of this place, and the high-up of the kytons is currently traveling the planes on some sort of investigation. I felt that this was a perfect opportunity to bob him. Though his minders are still here. They are likely below us this very instant.”

Nansi does nothing but repeats his prior mantra over and over again.

"Sounds like we shouldn't mess with the shield. It looks like a nice one, too. Well, maybe I can lift it as long as I don't touch it?" Nik wonders aloud.
He decides to inspect the magic too.

Nik determines that the shield will attract any spiders within 500ft causing them to swarm around the shield and attack the holder. If the owner is on the move or in a space that's spider free the curse will have little effect. However he surmises that taking it to the demonweb pits would be suicide.

"Looks like anyone carrying this around will get picked on by nearby spiders. Welp, I choose Nansi over the shield. We ... might need to tie up Nansi." Nik explains.
"Or float keep her from anything that she can crawl on?" he wonders aloud.
He casts Levitate on Nansi, hoping that the spider's will isn't strong enough to count as unwilling or that Rinika being willing is enough.
He tries to keep Nansi floating at least a foot from every surface chain.

Time to find out how much of an object Nansi is xD

Rinika's filching hand stops about an inch from the shield and slowly retracts after Nik's explanation.

"Hmm. Nansi, let's leave that here and go. Nansi?"

She'll grab the little modron spirit from midair if she needs to.

"Nansi, come on now."

She takes another look at the shield.

"I like the thought of giving someone we dislike on the way to meet Lolth a 'never come back' present. We can try grabbing it after our business is done. Or I can find out if noone minds a fireball rolling around up here, I guess." Nik says, standing by the way further in.

Also, I suppose plane shift to grab the shield and run might work out better than a spider BBQ...

Once Nansi is a distance away from the shield they return to their normal self and scurry within Rinika’s backpack again.

You find a strange chamber, in the center are strands of barbed chains criss crossing every which way. In the middle of the tangle is a suspended brazier, cold ashes lay in its pan. Below the brazier is a small rusty cask. Following the pattern of the chains makes your head spin.

To one side shelves made of iron platforms suspended by chains hold a small collection of books.

Too late you see three metallic snakes hiding within the floor chains, their overlapping adamantine scales twitching spasmodically, and red pinpoints of red light following you as you enter. They rear up and lunge at Jek viciously, two of them bounce off his mithral breastplate but the third slithers its way past the armor plates and sinks its teeth into vulnerable flesh. The wound is minor but some toxic substance is pumped into Jek’s veins.

5 damage, save fort DC 22 or take Con damage: 1d4 ⇒ 2, this is a poison effect.

Arcana DC 17:
These things are similar to iron cobras, typically used as an assassin by the budding artificer. But these are forged from Baatorian greensteel and enchanted further to be more resilient. Connected to their mouths is a poison reservoir which is good for three bites.

Perception DC 30 to act in surprise round but it doesn’t matter much when you lose initiative.

As Jek enters the room his eyes are instantly drawn to the books on the shelves. It was going to be one of those rooms. In a panic he quickly begins recalling the things in his pack. He needs a distraction. Something to do while his friends read for... who even knows how long it could take?

Then the fangs sink in. "Ow!" He flinches and tries to shake whatever bit him off. "There's bitey chains in here!"

The genie was so focused in her pontification about historical politics in her homeland that her thought of danger had waned. Only the books beyond Jek manage to capture her attention. So many new words...

Then Jek cries out.

Xibalba drops her book, stunned at the sight of her quadruped warden in pain. She curses her inattentive nature but refuses to act impetiously.

"Master Jek!" was all she could manage.

Strangely enough, Khikril seems relatively uninterested in Xibalba's tales, seemingly preoccupied with his own thoughts. As he walks between the rooms, he sketches in his notebook.

Notebook (if anyone peeks at his drawings):
Peering over the mad alchemist's shoulder reveals a series of elaborate schematics for some sort of mechanical vehicle in the form of a spider filled with swarms of smaller mechanical spiders, with the shield at the center. After a moment's consideration, he flips to the next page and begins to draw the spider-construct attacking a group of humans. Complete with speech bubbles, of the rather unimaginative "Ah, oh no, I am being eaten by spiders!" variety.

With far too much time and far too little sanity on his hands, he draws in a heroic figure in mechanical armor to squash the bugs, but gets sidetracked trying to figure out the figure's name.

As the party emerges into the room, his keen eyes spot the metallic snake-like constructs just before they strike, and his ebony eyes gleam with excitement. "Look at the workmanship on those things! You know, snake scales are the easiest type of skin to remove for maintenance access." When one of the constructs bites Jek, he glares at the bariaur. "That's not fair, Jek, absorbing all the venom before I have the chance to disassemble these things! That class of reservoir is only good for three injections, you know!" Taking wing, he zips over the heads of his allies in the way, landing beside Jek. "I've got some tools right here - give me a minute, and I'll start the surgery."

Snapping his fingers distractedly, the itaraak alchemist glances back at his golem for a moment. "Say, X-302, get me one of those snake things, would you? I want to run some experiments."

At its creator's command, X-302 strides forward, nudging past Jek to get into the room and adjacent to one of the other constructs that its master is so intrigued by. When it gets there, however, it stops, straightening, and its cylindrical head swivels between the metallic snake and the oversized syringes it has in place of fingers. Very good for distributing substances, not quite so good for grabbing a presumably hostile fellow construct. Through the porthole in the front of the head, the brain within bobs as the golem seems to contemplate its best course of action.

As the golem maneuvers into the room the it leaves itself open to the metal snaked jaws, which easily pieces the golem's defenses.

The metal snakes lash out at their nearest targets, mindlessly injecting them with more poison. X-302 for 3 damage, Jek for 9

Skee notes that he believes the venom injectors on these constructs have been spent.

I misspoke before Jek would need to make four additional saves for a total of five this turn and last, DC 22. The DC will increase by two for each subsequent saves if he fails the one before. Also I've apparently been doing poisons wrong for a while.

Khikril's eyes gleam as the metal cobras inject Jek with their venom. "Ooh! Ooh! Hold on - going to take me a minute to pin down the chemical, but it's a lively one - and it does not like your skeletal system!" Unslinging his satchel from his shoulder, he produces a talonful of tools, flicking his magnifying lens over his onyx eye as he goes to work on Jek's injuries.

Activating two uses from my Healer's Treatment Satchel to allow Jek to use that Heal result in place of a Fortitude save for poison.

As the constructs' fangs sink into the tubes and vials that make up its body, a handful of small cracks appear in X-302's form, puncture marks in the reservoirs that hold its cocktails of alchemical liquid. When the 'snakes' go to bite the golem, each of the constructs receives a 'face' (or the construct equivalent) full of some lively alchemical concoction as the foul substances begin to leak from X-302's form.

Seemingly coming to a decision, X-302's mechanical hand descends on the cobra trying to bite him, its syringe-tipped fingers scrabbling against the other construct's carapace as it tries and fails to pin down the slippery machine. After a few moments, its hand balls into a fist, and it slams the cobra on the head twice, attempting to alter its liveliness to a level more suitable for transport. As it pummels the other construct, one of the reservoirs along its arm begins to leak, spraying the snake-like creature with a high-pressure, high-temperature stream of one of Khikril's catastrophically failed formulae for a universal solvent, which quickly hardens and sticks to the floor as it coats the construct.

I should roll the 10+CR int check when I pick what I'm summoning next turn, right?
I vaguely recall elementals being distorted versions of themselves, but what about an (evil?) Grizzly Bear? I bet Hound Archon is right out xD
If neither of those are options I'll settle for a Hell Hound, those would definitely be on this plane. It'd even be DC13 instead of DC14 xD
Should I roll +22 know planes to know what the options are? Or maybe +20 arcana?

The Kyton disguised genie finally takes in the danger and clears her throat, inspired by some ancient text she'd read in one of Brass City's grand libraries.

"A djinn wishes to show the meaning of HASTE"

Sweat builds upon her forehead as she raises her cracked fingers together and with great struggle manages a solid snap, releasing a sound not disimilar to stones cracking against one another.

The djinn's magics fluctuates and stutters as she utters the wish herself, weaker than if it had been requested by another. Deep gold smoke billows forth from her to her companions, their movements now leaving a trail like a sparkler firework.

X-302 and Jek pummel one of the cobras, denting its hood slightly. 25 damage done to yellow Skee saves Jek from the nasty poison while the remaining spellslinger prepare for what comes next. Rinika's prayers are answered and the party feels the chill wind of the desert night blow across their shoulders. Rinika sees in her mind's eye a jackel as the magic leaves her.

Forgot about your Baatezu friend.

A black composite longbow appears in Gibbarren's hands, the arrows ignite as she nocks them, filling the room with the smell of brimstone.

The greensteel cobras retaliate, luckily Jek manages to get his hooves under him and rear up in time to avoid being bitten again. X-302 isn't as lucky but its bulk means the damage is slight.

The chill wind sends a shiver down Rinika's spine, not entirely unpleasant, and her spot follows and twists down to the tip of her tail.

She looks down her arm at the nearest chain snake and aims between her little and index fingers, and she calls out Slicing shadows, hear me nyow!"

An icosagonal hole in space appears in her crosshairs between Rinika and the snake, which quickly collapses inward and lances toward the enemy, a void where a...spear? should be - no - an umbrella of nothingness with just a hint of swirling sparkles far in the distance, cutting at the creature.

The hellhound looks at Nik with a malicious doggy grin breathing a gout of fire from it's mouth. Washing over one of the cobras and Jek.

12 damage unless Jek makes a DC 14 reflex save for half.

Rinika's spiritual umbrella pierces through the metal of the greensteel cobra, leaving a hole in its plating. Three of Jek's punches are deflected off the metal but the remaining strikes connect begining to crumple the metal.

Nik's spell fizzles as it connects with the construct, the magic harmlessly being grounded out.

Khikril blinks as the hellhound's flames wash over Jek, and he flicks another magnifying lens over his eyepiece, going to work on the worst of Jek's wounds. There is a whiff of formaldehyde as he douses the bariaur's wounds in the preservative liquids used on Mortuary corpses, but it seems to have at least some effect, and Jek feels the pain of his wounds fade as the strange liquids numb his skin.

Using my standard action to activate Healing Touch, giving Jek the benefits of Fast Healing 5 for one round. Extraordinary ability, so the plane's magic restrictions shouldn't apply.

As the greensteel cobra still seems to be quite active and eminently dangerous, X-302 continues to attempt to disable it as per standing instructions, ignoring the appearance of the malicious hellhound. The reservoirs along its arm continue to leak, spraying the construct with more aerosolized adhesive - somewhere in the tangled mess of pipes that make up its arm, an emergency shutoff valve engages, but the spark thus produced arcs along the colloidal suspension of glue and grounds itself firmly between the mechanical cobra's scales.

Here ears burn, as the ephemeral power of a wish drifts over the fray. Emboldened, she surges forward, ghosting through obstacles to poke through the chain wall.

"Granted! Granted! Granted!"

She shouts, emphasizing each word with an aggressive click of her fingers. Every snap summons forth orbs made of sand and electricity enveloping the green snakes. They crackle and burn the atmosphere as if plucked from the heart of a thunderous sandstorm.

Xibalba, spurred by Nik's wish, tries to reach through the Ethereal plane and draw out raw electricity from the paraelemental plane of electricity. But her power is not great enough to breach the multiple planar boundaries separating her from her goal.

Spell fails

Gibbarren helpfully suggests, "A shadow fiend who's been trapped in a gem can be used to fuel your spell. Otherwise a contract with one of the Lords of the Nine or the Dark Eight. I know a guy who knows a guy..."

She fires more arrows, the first deflecting off harmlessly. The second flies right in the middle one's mouth and explodes out the back end causing it to clatter harmlessly to the floor. Destroyed

The remaining construct mindlessly continues to tear into Jek's flank heedless of how out matched it is. 5 damage

As X-302 approaches with its burden, Khikril glances up from his task. "Excellent, excellent - an ideal speci-" He finally registers the cracks along his golem's form, and his brow furrows in anger. "That's at least three of my reservoirs ruptured - my experimental vats, too!" Drawing a handful of tools from his pack, he begins patching the holes in his construct as well. "Hold position - field repairs will be done in a minute."

As I read it, Healing Touch can apply to constructs - it applies the Spontaneous Healing discovery, which heals HP as per Fast Healing, which can theoretically be applied to constructs. If not, he'll still tend to his golem for flavor.

The remaining cobra lashes out at Jek one last time after receiving a pummeling from the bauriar, but the cobra only manages to scrape his armor. Miss

Alone and injured the remaining cobra stands no chance against the party as it is beaten into submission. One more hit from Jek would do it, so fast forward.

Room description repost

You find a strange chamber, in the center are strands of barbed chains criss crossing every which way. In the middle of the tangle is a suspended brazier, cold ashes lay in its pan. Below the brazier is a small rusty cask. Following the pattern of the chains makes your head spin.

To one side shelves made of iron platforms suspended by chains hold a small collection of books.

If you attempt to get the cask from the tangle of barbed chains, take Slashing: 1d6 ⇒ 4

From here you can see the cask has a lock on it, DC 30.

The books contain titles such as Roivas' Compendium of Darkness, Incunabulum of Banality, and The Eternal book of Chusones. They are all tomes that speak to the forces of order, obedience, and stagnation.

Arcana DC 30, neither dead or alive:
After skimming the books and the marginalia you deduce that whoever was using this library was researching why Jangling Hiter has been drained of its creativity, inspiration, and will to change. They have called the effect the Iron Shadow and were researching how to harness it and spread it across the multiverse. They haven't made much progress so far.

Rinika casually reaches in and grabs the cask, then she'll check it for traps before she and Nansi make short work of the lock.

Jek looks around the room for something to do and finds himself staring at the snakes. After a bit of poking and prodding begins braiding them. He stares at the ceiling. He paces. He peers into his bags. He looks over Nik's shoulder on the off chance that there's a picture. The tiny felt hedgehog has an epic battle against the many-headed braided iron greensteels. He grooms his fur. He balances for a bit on each hoof. He attempts a hornstand. He rearranges the books on the shelf. He opens the corpse barrel and quickly closes it. After a bit, he lies on the ground until Nik finally speaks...

"The books are clearly in on it..."

As Rinika works the lock she fails to notice a thin needle embedded within the keyhole. It pricks one of her fingers. There is no immediate effect but the pin prick and her finger begins to burn. Rinika manages to get the cask open with ease after fiddling with the lock for a few seconds.

Loot:
Wand of Detect Chaos 47 charges, 6 oils of devildeath, these are oils when applied to a weapon give the weapon bane against a specific type of evil outsider, 2 for Baatezu, 2 for Yugoloths, and 2 for Tanar’ri, it wears off after a single attack, each vial holds enough for 12 applications.

Also Rinika needs to make a Fort save DC 20 after a minute, this is a poison effect.

On failure:
Rinika is paralyzed and takes Con damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5 and must save again in one minute.
