Okay! I've done my research. Here's what I found:
I've already played a fighter (archer) who used rapid/many shot to devastating effect, but this time I wanted to go about it the other way. A strength-based archer, at least the one I built, doesn't fire nearly as many arrows, but each one has the potential to hit like a truck. I could have a ton of fun designing an orc tribe, using their customs for someone rather unfamiliar with human society.
This character would be a good tracker and survivalist, and it seems like we'll be travelling a fair bit. I like how brutal and savage he is. He's essentially representing monsters as saying 'hey! We don't want to be ruled by Tar-Baphon either!' Oh and he'll eventually get an animal companion, which I'm considering either a giant vulture or a whisper vulture. Not sure.
Downside: How do I get my hands on a masterwork orc hornbow with a +4 or +5 str rating? It's not likely that we'll be able to trade with anyone who'd just have it on hand, and making it is near-impossible. Early levels are kind of funny, because I'll actually be pretty good with thrown weapons and slings rather than longbows. Also, my reason for being in town is a little lack luster: I belong to one of the peaceful tribes that used to trade here, and I'm trying to figure out if shop is open or if I'll get shot.
Taking inspiration from Ustalav, I wanted a creepy character who intimately knows the enemy. Someone who's keen to dive into books of forbidden lore and know what the enemy knows. This is a standard wizard necromancer, but I wanted to stay non-evil. It's a super grey line, but I'm vowing to command undead, but to never create them. I'd probably kill them after the fight as well, instead of walking around with a hoard of zombies. Easier for both me and the DM if that's the case. I want to justify it with this guy being a repentant Pharasmin who figures he can learn necromancy and still stay in Pharasma's 'good books' by killing undead and not animating them.
The build looks alright, but the 10 Dex hurts along with an opposition school in conjuration: which means no mage armour. I have a reasonable hp pool, which will be increased with false life, but I'm a little wary about it. I figured out that I can cast Repair Undead, which will make me an off-healer for our Dhampirs, who I'd love to develop some sort of relationship with out of fascination.
Downside: I'm not sure how the GM will react to a character who can essentially dominate undead enemies and turn them against their masters/co-undead. Backstory is okay, but why is he in town? Rumours of ghosts, grave digging (gotta love that for a self-proclaimed Pharasmin), historical site? I'm not sure.
This is the PURIFICATION BY FIRE character. Looks really strong and pretty self-sufficient to me. I really like being able to cast spells a-la-5e, which makes it really flexible. I was originally going for evoker, but I found it to be too rigid for what I wanted.
FIREBALL, FIREBALL, FIREBALL!!
Downside: I is squish. 6hp makes me feel very fragile, and I'm a bit uncomfortable with it. I don't have a good backstory for this guy yet, but I do know why he's in town. He's been acting as an envoy from the Fangwood Forest. They want the town to rise up to function as a bastion (or target) for the undead/orcs in the region. He's been here since the town started being rebuilt.
The plague doctor. More of an off-healer really, I just wanted a pretty self-sufficient character with a fair bit of versatility and the ability to WEAR A COOL MASK. A little healing, a little AoE damage, a little poison, swift alchemical items, you know, the works.
Build is pretty average. Not really great at any one thing, but good to have around. Lots of utility.
I don't think he has a huge downside, apart from being a jack-of-all-trades. Backstory is lacking. I need more than just 'I'm a university graduate from Ustalav'. Grrr. I think he wants to set up a shop in town, and use it as income for his research. It would be a nice, quiet place to live.

All of those concepts sound cool. For the orc, there is a tribe of repentant orcs that worship Sarenrae who operate in the area. He could be a member of that tribe--think it's called the Burning Suns but I would have to double check.
I don't mind the necromancer taking control of undead to use against other enemies. It seems like a good strategy!
The arcanist seems fine. It's okay to be squishy if you have beefy people to stand in front of you most of the time.
The alchemist is my least favorite of the concepts. Nothing wrong with it, just seems a bit vanilla compared to the others.

I forgot the dwarf. Shield and axe, platemail. I'm thinking saving shield tree + cleave tree. Not sure if I'd want heavy shield or go tower shield with the archetype. He'd be a gruff and stubborn Kraggodan soldier and stone mason who's got long-term employment here.

I took a look at the Burning Sun tribe, and I can't say I'm interested. I want the orc character to be pretty savage, and the Burning Sun tribe is actively trying to curb that tendency. That being said, they are the only tribe that I can see that would definitely be interested in trade.
The tribe that I liked was the Bloodied Gauntlet tribe, but they are at near-constant war with Lastwall, so I'm not sure if there's a way he could be involved in the story without being shot on sight. What would be pretty cool is if it turned into a 'we must band together against a common enemy, Lastwall and the Bloodied Gauntlet'. I do see how they would be happy to fight off the Twisted Nail though. From what I read, looks like the Twisted Nail are cannibals.
I GOT IT! He's one of the guards for a peace talk! He's not the orc actually negotiating (not with his 6CHA), but he's a guard for them. The Bloodied Gauntlet tribe is trying to make peace with Lastwall, and they chose Roslar's Coffer as the middle-ground for the talk.
Thanks for your support of the necromancer. I wouldn't want to give you a headache.
I need to put more thought into the arcanist, alchemist, and fighter in order to put them on the same level as the first two. Unless I have some epiphany in the middle of the night, it looks like it's either the orc or the necromancer.
Any thoughts on your character, Wastrel?

For what its worth (which may not be much) I'd say play the necromancer. Has some nice thematic tie ins with the campaign and (I imagine) will be a lot less problematic in terms of kitting out. As you say, finding the orc hornbow is going to be a witch!
Besides I like the idea of the Whispering Tyrant, great Lich and grand necromancer being brought down by a rag-tag band of necromancers and other half-dead/mostly deads. The kind he'd just assume would do as he said... :D
Wandering Wastrel |
I like the idea of the necromancer, as well: Listen, if anyone's going to rule the world with a legion of undead, it's going to be ME! Not some pathetic has-been who managed to get themselves imprisoned for over a thousand years.
In other news, I still suck at making decisions. Nearly there, I promise...
So far it looks like
Dhampir Inquisitor
Dhampir Monk
Halfling fighter (?)
Human Necromancer (?)

Okay I've made my decision:
The Necromancer!
I had a few epiphanies while in the shower and now I finally understand the character. I'll be working on it today.
- Human, probably Varisian ethnicity
- Born in Ustalav into a minor noble family
- Something something about early adult life that I haven't figured out yet
- Studied medicine and necromancy at the university of Leipstad
Now why did he come to the Coffer?:
- Heard about two Dhampirs in the area and wants to study them
- Brother publicly declared him a necromancer and was thus run out of town, coming to the Coffer in hopes of lying low
- Got a job with the Pathfinder Society (Dark Archive) who sent him on a mission in or near the Coffer

Gabriella Filosovici wrote:... half-dead/mostly deads that follow Pharasma. ;)We do?
Sorry, didn't mean to speak for Alessandra. Gabriella follows Pharasma. It's the deity that makes the most sense for her considering the AP.
Brother publicly declared him a necromancer and was thus run out of town, coming to the Coffer in hopes of lying low
I like this one. It can also create the motivation for the character to prove himself; 'I'm going to show them that necromancy doesn't mean evil!'
Gabriella will probably never trust him, but ... *shrug* :)
Kamosh |
And so is Kamosh, his happy little trouble-maker familiar who can talk!
I wanted him to look like a whippoorwill, but do you think Paizo has any small bird pictures? Just this one! At least Ulrich is a necromancer, so it kinda fits.
Wandering Wastrel |
I think so, yes (o res mirabilis!)
I have the concept, the class (Lore Warden), the background, the personality, and the traits* - all I lack at the moment is time to write her up. Hopefully this evening...
*DM Brainiac - is it ok to reflavor a trait? Thinking of taking the Charming trait ("good-looking and knows it") but turning into something like "good-looking but doesn't know it" - would that be allowed?

Having a multi-class monk/oracle and a bard as our frontline would be suicide. Our party composition is already awkward as is since at level one we'll be really low on healing and our sole priest will be lagging behind two levels in her spellcasting.
I'll try and figure out what synergizes with and shores up some of the glaring weaknesses our party suffers from while watching Chelsea - Man City.
Alessandra Filosovici |
Note that the Moracle is only a frontliner for level 1, after that she's definitely more middle line. It'll be buffs first and only getting stuck in after that (like if someone tries to attack Gabriella!) so definitely frontline law warden! Ideally in heavy armour!
After level 2 I'll be able to deal with healing too, and 'only' one level behind at that! Luckily Oracles can heal pretty well when they try!
Eldarel Japhol |
Fair enough :)
I will stick with being a frontliner. I would suggest that a bard who took Scribe Scroll and started the adventure with some scrolls of CLW could well be a lifesaver
Sadly, Lore Wardens don't get heavy armour, but they do get useful skills. So Ellie will be dead clever, you might say :P
As a wizard, I say the more frontliners there are, the better! =D
Liniște, necromancer! You don't get to have an opinion, dabbler în vrăjitorie! Your Magia neagră mă dezgustă!
(I haven't actually finalised Ellie's real opinions on necromancy, but she's likely to start out as suspicious to say the least)
And since we seem to be doing this:
Starting age: 15 + 1d6 ⇒ 15 + (5) = 20 years old
Height 4 ft 5+: 2d10 ⇒ (3, 8) = 11 -> 5 ft 4 inches
Weight 85 +: 2d10 ⇒ (8, 5) = 13x5 -> 150 lbs
First draft of the character is complete. Needs some tweaking and a bit more gear, but hopefully you can see where she fits into the group.
