"She's calling on the gods for divine power," Arnaut calls back to Jordan. "If I had to guess, I would say she's getting ready to enter melee - and she'll be swifter and hit harder. She's not the hissing voice like I thought though - and does anyone know a Kyalla?" Putting aside his questions for the moment, he reaches into his haversack and pulls out a long ivory rod. "Careful over there," he calls to the naga as he steps around Sahess, "there's a lot you could trip on!"

The naga trips despite being immune to tripping and falls flat on its face! Jordan, however, has a hard time hitting a prone target behind cover and misses ALL of his shots! Even with the Dex penalty.

Wait, Jordan, did you apply cover on your end of the roll? If so then the Rapid Shot attack would've also hit.

Zhu Li looks at the naga as she palms a small packet of an alchemical extract and a trio of gold coins, crushing the former and spreading its contents over the latter. "Spread out," she calls, taking aim and flicking one of the coins through the air at the last remaining Mwangi man with a bang like a firearm discharging. "This one, I can take for a time. Focus on the caster!" Suiting actions to words, Zhu Li steps forward, guard up, smirking tauntingly at the man she just shot in the shoulder.

Forgot to account for Good Hope, bleh. And yeah, I love it! Obviously someone at Paizo reads or watches To Aru. Used with gold pieces it's one of the more efficient lv1 combat spells at high level, and it can bypass two different forms of DR and hardness. If I hadn't been in a broom closet with those golems, it synergizes hella well with Studied Combat and Kirin Strike.

The massive walls of this immense ruin must once have formed the facade of an impressive palace. An enormous humanoid statue, stooped on all fours and still two dozen feet tall, looms in the shadows within.

This is a Gigantopithecus—a dire ape. This particular ape seems waaay bigger than other dire apes—it has the Giant simple template.

Zhu Li stares at this statue in thought—her thoughts are interrupted by another’s.

”Do not sssay that I wassss never kind.”

A huge section of the massive ruin topples onto the causeway as the building’s titanic occupant stirs into action. With a ferocious, simian scream the form pushes its way through the rubble and into the open air, revealing itself as an enormous carnivorous ape with foul breath, a jaw full of teeth as long and as sharp as swords, and brightly glowing, deep red eyes. Around its neck is a thick leather collar from which five broken lengths of chain dangle and clink. The creature looms more than 20 feet above you, screaming with savage fury in your direction.

Zhu Li:
Zhu Li’s memory is jogged about this ape as she stares in disbelief—this is the ape Da’Tunga that she helped to kill during an escapade in the Mwangi Expanse the final boss of 0-05 Mists of Mwangi, and it’s assumed that the party killed him in that scenario, but he’s much, MUCH bigger than when she saw the ape last! As Zhu Li stares at the screaming simian, Da’Tunga glares back at Zhu Li with a similar recognition in his eyes—the ape recognizes you.

Arnaut's got your back, Zhu! It won't kick in until next round though.

Trying to keep the ape distracted, Arnaut continues his cacophonous song as he pulls out his rod of reach again and gestures with it towards Zhu's still form. "Let's start by getting you out of sight," he says as he steps behind a broken wall, keeping an eye on the gorilla as Zhu fades from the visible spectrum.

Move action to pull out rod, Standard to cast reach invisibility on Zhu, 5 ft step.

Also, GM, was that comment about Jordan's arrow "barely seeming to scratch the ape" a way of saying it has DR, or just a boatload of hitpoints? And are there any additional knowledge checks we might make to identify precisely how this thing might be different from a regular dire ape?

| Strange Aeons | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

Despite everyone’s efforts, Da’Tunga is still standing and angry!

@Arnaut: Yes to DR, yes to boatload of hit points, no to the knowledge checks. Also, weird thing, I’ve always run that metamagic rods take a full-round action to apply to a spontaneous spell, but it stupidly only calls out doing that only to sorcerers—which I find stupidly biased and the forums agree that the RAI was that it does that with all spontaneous spells, so...not entirely sure where to go with that from here.

| Strange Aeons | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

Nevermind! Guess my stomach bug went away.

Botting Jordan:

Jordan vs Da’Tunga:
Calculations (BAB, Dex, WF, Enhancement, Point-Blank, Heroism, Courage, Deadly, Rapid): 9 + 7 + 1 + 3 + 1 + 2 + 3 - 3 - 2 = 21
Calculations (Str, Enhancement, Point-Blank, Courage, Deadly): 2 + 3 + 1 + 3 + 6 = 15

Manyshot: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (18) + 21 = 39
Damage: 2d6 + 15 + 2d6 + 15 ⇒ (2, 5) + 15 + (2, 3) + 15 = 42

Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (19) + 21 = 40
Damage: 2d6 + 15 ⇒ (3, 5) + 15 = 23

Secondary: 1d20 + 21 - 5 ⇒ (4) + 21 - 5 = 20
Damage: 2d6 + 15 ⇒ (1, 1) + 15 = 17

Da’Tunga roars in pain as all of Jordan’s arrows hit! The ape beats his chest, increasing in tempo as some of its wounds heal! That ability’s a standard action?! I thought it was a move! That’s much worse! Welp, time to do what the ape does best: Da’Tunga beats his chest before laying waste down on Sahess! EDIT: For clarity, I noticed that one of Da'Tunga's abilities was a standard as I was writing this; I didn't post first and then change the post afterwards.

I also have to apologize; the Power Attack penalty should have applied to Da’Tunga’s CMB check to grab Zhu Li last round, so it actually shouldn’t have grabbed her with its bite (-5 penalty w/Power Attack). That said, it could still grab with both claws (I didn't roll those grab checks because I thought it had already grabbed her) and it dropped the grapple at the end of its turn and the modifiers actually didn’t change any of the end results, so it didn’t make much difference anyhow.

Da’Tunga vs Sahess:
Bite: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (5) + 20 = 25
Damage: 1d8 + 20 ⇒ (4) + 20 = 24
Grab: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (14) + 21 = 35

Claw 1: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (3) + 20 = 23
Damage: 1d6 + 20 ⇒ (4) + 20 = 24
Grab: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (17) + 21 = 38

Bull Rush: 1d20 + 23 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 23 + 14 = 46
Damage (Yes, Sahess takes damage): 10 = 10

The ape bites and slashes at Sahess, but surprised at its inability to hit Sahess and knowing that it can't take another full-round from her, Da’Tunga instead punches the Nagaji in the gut and flings Sahess as far away from it as possible—the ape’s muscles momentarily rippling and doubling in size as it does so! I know that this combat maneuver is usually a standard action to do, but what Da’Tunga has a thing. Sahess takes 10 damage and is pushed back 15’.

I leave that call up to you GM, but the CRB clearly has bards who are also clearly spontaneous casters and clearly not mentioned in the cited text - nor are any other spontaneous caster class in the Rod section of Ultimate Equipment. Entertainingly, from what I can tell this is a carryover from 3.5 where the lore is that a wizard created the first metamagic rod specifically to spite sorcerers and their ability to spontaneously add metamagic feats to spells.

Moving forward with intended course of actions - we can retcon if need be.

Arnaut switches songs, and his allies once more feel inspired to perform great acts of heroics! He then whistles, and an image of Zhu waking up and standing to face the ape once more appears a short distance away from the real Zhu.

Move action to start Inspire Heroics for more temp hp (yay for Zhu being conscious!) and standard to cast silent image (Will 20 if interacted with), tying it to his performance's duration with Spellsong.

No need to be passive-aggressive, Arnaut, I’m ruling it in your favor because this is PFS and I have to go by the RAW (and knowing the original spite behind it reaffirms that stance—at least the bias has reason, even if I don’t agree with it; still going to rule that that applies to all spontaneous castings in my home games). I only paused like I did because…actually I’m not sure. I just kinda did. Guess just holding out hope that it applied how I wanted it to apply; sue me. Anyways:

Da’Tunga AoO w/bite: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (12) + 20 = 32
Damage: 1d8 + 20 ⇒ (5) + 20 = 25
Grab: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (15) + 21 = 36

Sahess is bitten by the great ape Get it?! but the nagaji bites back as she rips the gorilla’s ear clean off, making Da’Tunga scream out in pain and consequently dropping Sahess flavor; technically he can’t drop the grapple until his turn! As the ape screams in pain Jordan lets loose four arrows that fly right into the beast’s mouth, piercing the roof of its mouth, and exiting through the top of Da’Tunga’s head! The behemoth is silenced as it falls backwards and slams into the ground, dead!

Da’Tunga:
So….that thing was a Giant dire ape Barbarian 14.

Technically wasn’t an awakened animal, which it should’ve been in order to get class levels, but that’s an author oversight that’s easy to make, plus it’s forgivable considering the flavor of the situation (which I can’t tell you yet). If you guys know stuff about giving monsters class levels (a stupidly complicated process), you’ll know (if you delved deep enough) that an animal has the “Combat Role” (technically they have “No Role,” but if they’re brought above animal intelligence [which is required to gain class levels] then their role changes to “Combat”), this means that for each level in a combat-oriented class (such as barbarian) that the creature gains it increases its CR by 1 (otherwise it would increase its CR by 1 for every two class levels, until its level in the class equals its original CR, in which case the CR increases by 1 for every gained level thereafter; it’s confusing). Additionally, any creature that doesn’t have ANY gear (usually they have the gear of a heroic NPC of a level equal to their CR) has its CR decreased by 1 (assuming a lack of gear is a hindrance to the class; inversely, giving something the gear of a PC level equal to its CR [before adjustments for gear] increases a class-levelled monster’s CR by 1). Side note: when you give a monster class levels then you also adjust its ability scores by +4, +4, +2, +2, +0, -2 (assigned usually as appropriate for the class it is getting levels in).

Why did I go on that tangent about monsters with class levels? It was to say that Da’Tunga is, as written, CR 14, which is technically wrong by the RAW. A dire ape is CR 3, +1 from the Giant template, +14 from the barbarian levels, -1 from a lack of gear.

CR: 3 + 1 + 14 - 1 = 17

They likely made an ad hoc CR call with this thing (300+ hit points but a 15 AC), which is something Paizo does with some weird class-levelled monsters (ESPECIALLY incorporeal creatures).

Anyways, weird tangent aside, I know that Arnaut is curious as to how Da’Tunga’s Will save is so high, so:

+1 base from racial HD, +4 base from Barbarian levels, +1 Wis, +2 Iron Will, +3 from Greater Rage (“Da’Tunga enters a bloodthirsty rage immediately upon his [animation from being a statue]…” spoilers so I altered the quote slightly I interpreted that as Da’Tunga was already raging when initiative was rolled.), +5 from the Superstition rage power, +4 against enchantment spells from the Indomitable Will class feature.

Will: 1 + 4 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 5 + 4 = 20

Yeah…this guy is kinda ridiculous.

Retcon; Sorry:
Something I should’ve address earlier: Sahess and Arnaut would’ve noticed something invisible moving within range of their blindsight/sense. But as soon as you make it clear that you noticed something then the invisible whatever-it-is would have moved out of range of blindsight/sense. If you try to confront it then it would seem to vanish completely (rather than vanish visually) after some magical words. This would probably happen 1d4 ⇒ 3 times intermittently since you guys got onto this map. Sorry for only informing you about that now, but you were supposed to not face the invisible thing yet, if you did then things would get super-derailed (I’m technically not following tactics as-written by have the invisible thing run away, but it was either that or have every single combat on this map basically trigger at once and I decided to err on the side of NOT having you guys deal with 5 tripping guys, a naga, a raging ape, and the whatever-it-is all at once; those written tactics suggest that they are under the assumption that the GM allows all of those combats to trigger at once based on the way I read it. I supposed I could have said that they just so happened to have stayed exactly far enough away from the party that you never see them, but that’s just unlikely, all things considered.

Basically, I did something technically not as-written because I knew that you guys couldn’t handle it. You can burn me in effigy for my sins at a later date.

A familiar voice comes—but verbally this time!

”How sssad. I had high hopessss for that one. If you want something done right, I sssssuppossse…”

The voice comes from the westernmost chamber opposite the area you all are currently in. A narrow set of thin stairs leads some 20 feet up to the surface of a large raised platform just off the main causeway. The white marble structure bears significantly less damage than most of the other buildings in the courtyard. Dozens of humanoid statues crowd the open space around the foot of the stairs they’re not actually addressed other than in box text and not on the map, so I’m going to say that the “dozens of humanoid statues” don’t hinder movement at all.

Arnaut and Sahess:
You two notice an invisible something move towards the group from where you all heard the voice.

The sound of magical incantation fills the chamber as everyone except Zhu Li, since she’s invisible and the illusion was targeted instead feels their limbs begin to become sluggish!

Will Saves:
Arnaut: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30
Jordan: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31
Sahess: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (5) + 9 = 14 Is that the bonus while Sahess is out of rage? I’m not sure.
Zhu Li: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Sahess now begins moving in slow motion!

My apologies GM - I did not intend to sound passive-aggressive.

Arnaut dances away from this newest threat and tucks himself behind the same wall as the invisible Zhu. Winking at her, he calls out, "No Zhu! Don't go charging after her like that!" The illusionary Zhu gulps down the contents of a bottle before moving towards the central dais - and the medusa standing on it.

Move action to move, standard to concentrate on illusion to move (pretty sure that's still required to change the illusion, even with Spellsong).

Also, if Zhu can heal herself a bit, Arnaut can be ready to drop his performance to give an ally a reroll on a saving throw (such as against petrification) with saving finale.

S: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (14) + 17 = 31
Z: 1d20 + 20 + 1d6 ⇒ (9) + 20 + (3) = 32

Welp. Guess I have to state this; should’ve made this clear earlier: You need to make saves against the gaze at the start of your turns, not on Condria’s turn. Thus, at the start of your turn you need to state your “visual status”: staring at her (make the save as normal), averting your gaze (50% chance of needing to make a save at all but she gains 20% concealment against your attacks), or not looking at her (has 50% concealment but guarantees that you do not need to save). I know Arnaut had echolocation so he can close his eyes and not have to worry about the 50% concealment because of blindsight; same goes for Zhu Li. Sahess was outside of the 30’ range of the gaze at the start of her turn, plus she didn’t directly target Condria with anything so it’s safe to say that she wasn’t looking at her either. Jordan, on the other hand, did target her with attacks AND was within 30’ of her, so he would need to make a save, but I’m going to be kind and say that he decided to avert his gaze for this turn.

Have I mentioned that I hate the gaze attack rules? Because I hate the gaze attack rules. Thankfully, IIRC this is the only instance of those rules in all of Eyes of the Ten.

Jordan needs to make a save on a 1: 1d2 ⇒ 2

Miss Chances (Miss on a 1):
Manyshot: 1d5 ⇒ 1
Rapid Shot: 1d5 ⇒ 4
Iterative: 1d5 ⇒ 5

Two of Jordan’s arrows fly about two feet from the medusa, followed by a shot to her gut, but she manages to dodge the third shot! Manyshot missed from concealment, Iterative didn’t hit her AC.

Also, going to guess that Zhu Li has the Ophidian Necklace since she has the lowest Fort saves all around (and she doesn’t have a neck slot item as far as I can see, so she’s likely wearing it) and that Sahess has the greenstone idol because…no duh (and she doesn’t need to wear the idol around her neck because it specifically says “those who possess the idol…”). The two are never explicitly called out as being slotted magic items or magic items at all, but I’m making a GM call that they both are and that the Ophidian Necklace takes up the neck slot because that makes the most logical sense.

And I will also remind you all: Blindsight and blindsense do not allow you to “see” where you do not have line of effect.

Condria smirks. ”Sssmart. Ssupposssse I sshould take a different approach. Let’sss sssstart thiss over!”

Magical incantation fills the chamber! Arnaut can’t make the check below because he can’t see Condria, and Zhu Li’s really clipping the rock with her line of sight/effect (see the red line), so I’m going to leave it up to a die roll:

Zhu Li has line of sight/effect on a 1: 1d2 ⇒ 1 Fair enough; Zhu Li can attempt the Spellcraft check.

Spellcraft 17 +1 per 10’ from Condria:

With a grin and a wave, Condria vanishes from sight! Put a translucent token at her last seen location.

Arnaut:
With his keen sense of hearing, Arnaut hears footsteps clamber quietly away from the party, though he is unsure in which direction. And before you get on me about invisibility only applying to visual effects: this is PFS and I’m bound by the RAW, and by the RAW invisibility grants a bonus to ALL stealth checks. You get the rod and I get the invisibility; the RAW giveth and the RAW taketh away.
