Just so you guys know, Zhu Li’s player is going through a real-life thing, so I’ll be botting Zhu Li until further notice.

Botting Zhu Li and Sahess:

Zhu Li, unable to do much else, runs out of the swarms, shaking centipedes our of her clothes as she does so.

Sahess moves up, turns around, and because I heard “I consent to PvP! breathes a cone of frost right on top of the swarms!

Reflex Saves:
Cold Damage: 13d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 3, 6, 6, 6, 1, 5, 3, 1, 3, 2, 1) = 41
Jordan: 1d20 + 23 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 23 + 2 = 33

Swarm 1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18
Swarm 2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Swarm 3: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Swarm 4: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

The draconic cold freezes all of the swarms solid!

”Oh for—!”

Ferocleus waves his arms around as a column of flame bursts up from the ground! Red radius.

Reflex Saves:
Divine Fire Damage: 13d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 1, 6, 2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 1, 1, 2) = 44
Jordan: 1d20 + 23 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 23 + 2 = 39
Sahess: 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 10 + 2 = 29

Valicia, glitter still in her eyes, scowls toward Ferocleus—and missing him by about a foot.

”I’m dying here! Could’ve used some healing!”

“You haven’t done anything for me.”

What?!

“And I got dibs on your gear if you die.”

“You little—!”

“Survive one more assault and maybe I’ll heal you.”

“Give me their positions at the very least.”

Ferocleus peeks around the corner.

”Armored one moved up—they’re about 20’ away from you to your right. The archer’s only taken a step forward from where he was before. Can’t see the Tian woman or the guy you were shooting at before.”

Valicia steps to the side as she aims roughly in Jordan’s direction.

”Now that is something I can work with. Pyrecat! A little help?!”

Knowledge (local) 27:
Pyrecat is an ex-Pathfinder; like Woaltog, she used the organization’s resources to commit murders. The elf disappeared well over fifty years ago.

The blind archer nocks her arrows and shoots toward Jordan! And because she’s blind, mirror image is irrelevant.

Valicia vs Jordan:
Point-Blank Shot applies.
Manyshot: 1d20 + 20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 20 + 1 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 10 + 1 + 1d8 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 10 + 1 + (6) + 10 + 1 = 31
Miss Chance (Miss on a 1): 1d2 ⇒ 1

Rapid Shot: 1d20 + 20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 20 + 1 = 27
Damage: 1d8 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 10 + 1 = 15
Miss Chance (Miss on a 1): 1d2 ⇒ 1

Secondary: 1d20 + 20 + 1 - 5 ⇒ (12) + 20 + 1 - 5 = 28
Damage: 1d8 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 10 + 1 = 18
Miss Chance (Miss on a 1): 1d2 ⇒ 2

Tertiary: 1d20 + 20 + 1 - 5 - 5 ⇒ (13) + 20 + 1 - 5 - 5 = 24
Damage: 1d8 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 10 + 1 = 12
Miss Chance (Miss on a 1): 1d2 ⇒ 2

Valicia Will: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

Valicia wipes the last of the glitter from her eyes as she draws her bow with intense focus.

Sahess:
Sahess “sees” something strange with her blindsense: something moves into the room Ferocleus is in from the room above, moves immediately to the right, then moves back into the previous space, only to instantaneously jump to be directly above Valicia, then moves directly to the right again ending in the space where the orange circle is.

Spellcasting resonates from the room where Ferocleus is orange circle before just stopping.

Spellcraft 38 +1 per 10’ from Orange Circle:

Funny Story: throughput all of my prep work for these scenarios I’ve misread this NPC’s name every single time—her name is “Pycerat,” not “Pyrecat.”

Ferocleus Will: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (12) + 13 = 25
Pycerat Will: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15

The fabulous outline of an elven woman wielding a shortsword appears in the space Sahess swung at! Character Profiles Updated

Botting Zhu Li:

Zhu Li studies Pycerat with both Kirin Style and studied combat and moves up, drawing her rapier as she does so because I can’t remember if she did already or not.

”Oh my—! Do you do anything else?!” Ferocleus shouts at Arnaut as he waves his arms madly.

Suddenly, right in front of Sahess Green line appears a roaring curtain of air technically it’s invisible, but it’s not quiet, so I’m saying you all are able to pinpoint its position. Ferocleus then retreats further into the next room.

Can’t remember if this would provoke despite her having cover, so I’m just going to have Pycerat cast defensively.

Spellcraft 16 +1 per 10’ from Pycerat:

Pycerat Concentration Casting Defensively, DC 17: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
Pycerat Concentration Casting while affected by non-damaging spell; DC 22: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20

”Well that didn’t work...”

Pycerat then moves directly to the west doesn’t provoke because of cover, but when she does so she somehow ends up not directly in front of Sahess, but 15’ away directly in front of the passage to the next room. The elf then enters said room and retreats behind a wall. She auto-succeeds at the Acrobatics check to move full speed while blind.

Glitterdust should negate the miss chance, as per the spell description.

"Oh yes!" Arnaut replies cheerfully as he approaches. "Have you seen this one before? It's a real hit with the kids, so I think it'll be perfect for you!" A flick of the wrist sends a tiny bead of liquid flying towards the druid before splattering on the ground in a sticky mess. "Oh dear - I hope I didn't overexcite you," Arnaut says, one hand covering his mouth as he surveys the results.

Move and cast glue seal (Reflex 20) on the ground underneath the druid, then start Inspire Greatness for that sweet sweet temp hp.

As Sahess moves into the next room, she finds a single raised walkway above two five-foot deep trenches on either side of her, filled with a roiling smog. As she enters, the room itself elongates to impossible lengths as the way to the other side extends further and further!

This room is weird. Despite physically being only 15’ long in order to get to the other side a creature has to effectively move a total of 200’ because of a “dimensional anomaly.” And yes, I am aware that that would also apply to Ferocleus and Pycerat; I've been running it correctly thus far (I think. Had to make a GM call for this). Confused yet? Good.

Guessing that Sahess moved in on foot, getting 25’ in, then used her standard action to fly another 45’ (60’ fly speed reduced to 40 from armor, then increased by 5 for the Armored Swiftness class feature). So Sahess is effectively 70’ in the 200’ corridor (moved her back to accommodate).

I had specific instructions from Jordan’s player on how to bot his character for the moment (moving into the weird room and using Spellstrike, but I’m going to flat-out ignore those instructions because he can’t move into the room; the room is still physically 15’ long, so while Sahess effectively moved 70’ into the corridor, she still occupies all of the 5-foot-square that’s at the entryway. Confused? Good.

Jordan moves up and casts haste.

Zhu Li then drinks an extract of universal formula to copy the effects of delay poison.

”Ferocleus, dispel this stupid thing!”

“Why don’t you do it?”

“Because I don’t know that spell!”

“You don’t know dispel magic? That is, like, spell #1—”

“I don’t care! Just get rid of it!”

Done. I put Pycerat’s position back on the map, but she is still invisible, so Jordan and Zhu Li don’t actually know where she is.

An archway opens into a wedge-shaped room, its outer wall bisected by a spherical chamber. Blackened, lightning-shaped streaks run across the walls and floors. Zhu Li and Jordan:
Zhu Li is able to detect the ward on Valicia’s glass eye and a dispel magic will suppress the ward for 1d4 ⇒ 1 rounds. To keep the ward from triggering, one of you have to shove the eye into your head before the suppression rounds are up. Gonna say that Zhu Li uses her scroll of dispel magic (doesn’t actually give a CL, so I’ll say it works automatically), and since Jordan expressed not wanting to lose an eye—and Zhu Li has expressed interest (however reluctant) to do the faction missions, I’ll say that she does it.

The Pathfinders go back through the headache hallway ”On either side, 5-foot-deep alcoves connect to the initial 15 ft. of the corridor....A creature in either of the alcoves treats all 200 feet of the passage between them as being adjacent.” How those guys were bypassing going through the 200’ and Zhu Li and Jordan crouch down above Valicia’s body, Zhu Li casts a spell from a scroll, and subsequently rips out one of the archer’s eyes and shoves it into her own skull!

The floor of this chamber is inlaid with giant circular mosaic of the four primary elements divided into quarters that swirl counter-clockwise. A brass plaque encircles the mosaic, engraved with a passage that reads: “The shortest year has five seasons of fire.” In the northwest corner, a short passage leads to a door.

Through the door in the short passage is a large cylindrical chamber divided into four distinctly colored areas.

If you pull any of the levers by each of the doors then all open doors close, every trap goes off then immediately resets, the cylindrical room rotates 45 degrees clockwise, and the door the lever was next to opens. This challenge is deadly for a group without a trapfinder but I played a character with trapfinding and trap spotter and stupid-high Perception and didn’t get a chance to see the traps grumble grumble grumble. However, because Zhu Li can both see and disable the traps by taking-10, I’m going to hand-wave this challenge (“If the PCs disable all four traps, simply end the encounter and assume they eventually find their way out...”).

On the other side of the cylindrical room

The revolving elemental chamber empties into a broad, windowless hall. Half columns of marble flank the walls, and a carpeted path stretches towards the single exit: a curved stairwell carved of slick, gray basalt, the top of which cloaked in a dark shadow that cannot be seen through. In the center of the hall, atop a marble dais, sits perched a great copper-clad sphinx.

Everyone files into the chamber and as they do so, the sphinx rears its head and stares at the Pathfinders and crouches, ready to strike!

"Um..." Arnaut quickly decides not to comment further on his fellows ripping out their own eyes and replacing them with ones from dead people. Note to self - stay far away from Zarta.

GM, Arnaut would want to put good hope up again with the extend rod for another 26 minutes when the first expired. Is this an acceptable retcon? It won't change initiative here.

Knowledge (history), Good Hope, Heightened Awareness, Take 10: 10 + 12 + 2 + 2 = 26

"Andrexiel, we really don't have time for this," Arnaut says with a disapproving scowl. "Now, you've not done a great job of guarding the tower so far today - perhaps your spirits are low because you haven't had any new riddles lately? Here, I've got one for you: Why is a raven like a writing desk? Well, the obvious answer would be that they both start with the same 'rrr' sound, but I think we can go further into the comparison - they both often hold feathers, both commonly made of organic materials, and both are signs of intelligence among the common folk. The better question, though, is how is a raven not like a writing desk?" He carries on, conversing at the sphinx in a surprisingly lilting tone.

Haven't gotten to use this one before, but better late than never! Arnaut begins his Fascinate performance (Will 28). Oddly enough, the description regarding what breaks the effect seems to deliberately avoid mentioning weapons already in hand, so I'm assuming they don't break the effect unless aimed at the fascinated creature(s). Since it is a swift action to start, he might be able to take the rest of his turn once he knows if the effect was resisted.

And, quite pathetically, the great Copper Sphinx falls to the ground. The Pathfinders heal up as needed and ascend the staircase into the darkness.

*

Atop the stairs, the unnatural shadow disperses, emptying like a river of gray swirling fog into a tremendous, circular atrium. The fog collects along the perimeter of the room, hovering no more than a foot above the ground. The remainder of the floor is exposed. Its surface appears slick and glasslike. Light from below penetrates the translucent surface, giving off a faint, eerie glow. The walls too appear made of the same, glassy substance. They climb almost twenty feet, then curve inward into a shadowy metal dome. Pinholes of light twinkle on the surface of the dome ceiling, giving it the appearances of the night sky. A shifting array of scenes twist and dance across the surface of the murky windows, depicting scores of people and places in dozens of realms throughout Golarion.

Full-round action and Knowledge (geography or local) 20:
As you stare at the windows you see a number of different scenes: One section shows a longsword-wielding skeleton going toe-to-toe against an elven man with a sword-cane, a woman with a greataxe and exquisitely ornate armor, and a literal genie. In another, you see a familiar halfling woman with a whip striking at a hulking minotaur for what seems like the umpteenth time. In yet another you see a winter elf holding up the symbol of Sarenrae, a halfling man astride a wolf, an unarmored human man with a bow, and a halfling woman bearing the regalia of Desna all going up against massive, tentacled, worm-like beasts that shoot up from under the ground. For each image of splendid adventure, there are five mundane ones—men and women of various races lounging about in areas you know as lodges all around the Inner Sea Region and beyond.

However, there is one image that catches your eye most: two handsome human men—one with a bow, another with a horn—a Tian woman with a rapier, and a heavily-armored nagaji stand at the top of a stairway that seems to descend down into darkness as they look off at something out of view of the image. It is you all.

A lone figure stands in the center of this room. Her face is covered with an ivory mask, featureless except for pale, pupil-less white orbs lined with jade where her eyes should be. Its surface is inlaid with complex patterns of runes and upon its left cheek rest three, blood-red, crystalline tears. Dozens of silver rings pierce the perimeter of the mask, and it is hooded with a bristling mane of peacock feathers. Besides the mask, she wears a gown of peacock feathers, porcupine quills and shimmering plates of scintillating opalescent abalone. The woman stares off at the windows, as still as a statue. ”Some folks are so rude,” Arnaut mutters, loudly bemoaning his fate, and the fate of every artist, to be misunderstood. Every tap of his wand is accompanied by either a tale of woe or a scathing review of a critic - and the sphinx opened quite a few cuts and gashes on the poor bard.

As Arnaut studies the woman standing before him, he cannot get a read on her for the life of him—this woman is a complete mystery.

The woman speaks, her voice mesmerized yet hypnotic, and her gaze never leaves the windows about the room.

“Well Adril, you have found me at last. I see you have once again manipulated the members of the Society into performing your dirty work. I congratulate you on your ingenuity. Well played. Now that you’re here, you may as well reveal yourself to your pawns.”

The Pathfinders stare at the woman in stunned and confused silence. Before they have a chance to even react, they all see a sight that they never have before: the ioun stones spinning around their heads—the eraminho stones—rapidly slow their orbital speed until they just stop. The humanoid-shaped stones drain of color, turning a dull gray, before one by one clattering to the ground.

Each stone, one after the other, spews forth an etheric mist. The mist coalesces into a humanoid form next to Sahess—a form very familiar to you all: a fully-armored Adril Hestram stands at attention, a massive hammer in his hands and his eyes dead-set on the mysterious woman.

“And so it begins, Shemis Character Profiles Updated…Endgame.”

The etheric mist, however, does not dissipate. One by one the mist from each individual stone gathers next to the Pathfinder who bore it, in turn coalescing into similar humanoid forms—the forms of Adril Hestram. And Adril Hestram. And Adril Hestram.

Every Adril Hestram spins the hammer in their hands before gripping it with white knuckles, looking at the woman with sheer murder in their eyes.

An Explanation:
Welcome to the reason I pushed so hard to have a party of four. Now, I’m going to run this combat differently from how I’ve run the others: in order to minimize on meta-gaming (“This guy has a lower attack roll modifier, so he’s not Adril Hestram!”) I’m going to be rolling the Adrils’ Initiatives separately AND keeping attack rolls, saving throws, etc. in GM Screen spoilers that I again ask that you NOT look in. I will still roll your guys’ saving throws, etc. outside of such spoilers, because the natural roll for such things with PCs is public knowledge. I’ll be honest: I’ve been waiting for this combat for a while!

The two Adrils cry in frustration as the glitter gets into their eyes!

Gonna bot Zhu Li based on what her player was saying in Discussion:

Zhu Li drinks her extract of arcane sight standard action and studies the four Adrils gonna say that that’s a move action.

Zhu Li sees and relays to the rest of the party that none of the Adrils themselves radiate magic, but that one of the is carrying far more magical items on his person—the one right next to her Orange!

Zhu Li then enters Kirin Style.

The Adril that was next to Arnaut listens intently move action and discovers the location of the not-very-subtle singing bard and kicks off his back foot, Lunging as per the feat forward and sweeps his hammer at the bard, but its shaking fear at Arnaut’s music causes it to grip his earthbreaker a bit too far up the handle and the hammer comes within an inch of the Shelynite’s face , whooshing past with severe force!

Shemis’s gaze finally breaks from the windows as she looks over at the scene unfolding before her.

”Doppelgangers. No need to use illusions to mask your location.” As she speaks you’re unsure as to whether she’s stating an observation or if she’s actually praising the ex-Venture-Captain.

Shemis waves her staff and utters a deep incantation as her form blurs and she begins shifting and wavering within three feet of her location, but the woman does not move.

The Adril next to Zhu Li claws at his eyes in anger as he moves toward Shemis!

Zhu Li AoO (-3 from Dex damage): 1d20 + 14 - 3 ⇒ (14) + 14 - 3 = 25

And barely manages to hit the man through his thick armor!

As he moves, the Adril pulls out a small axe that he chucks where he last saw Shemis—which just so happens to be right where she is currently. Unfortunately for him, the axe goes wide, missing Shemis by several feet, but the axe’s path curves around her like a boomerang and returning to Adril’s hand flavor; it technically doesn’t return to him until the start of his next turn—unfortunately the blind man catches the axe by the head of the axe, but he thankfully wore his metal gauntlets, so he’s just fine. He drops the axe to the ground as he returns both of his hands to his earthbreaker.

The last of the Adrils—the one with a massive wound across its face—moves up and swings at the singing Shelynite! The man swings toward Arnaut’s head but the bard dodges just in time, but Adril’s attack still manages to hit him in the gut! 25 damage That was a failed confirmation with a X3 weapon. His next two swings go wide as they completely miss Arnaut.

The Adril next to her slumps to the ground before his skin shifts and his beard slump back into his body, revealing the form of a gray-skinned creature with a noseless face and a narrow head.

ID Not-Adril: Nature 13:
This is a doppelganger, shapechangers capable of perfectly copying a creature’s appearance.

If you exceed the DC by 5+, open the spoiler below

Spoiler:
Doppelgangers are immune to charms and any effect that would make them fall asleep.

Sahess steps over and redirects her attacks at Blue.

Secondary vs Blue: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (1) + 21 = 22
Damage: 2d6 + 31 ⇒ (4, 4) + 31 = 39

Tertiary vs Blue: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (6) + 16 = 22
Damage: 2d6 + 31 ⇒ (2, 6) + 31 = 39

Jordan starts Inspire Courage, steps back, activates his boot, and full-attacks!

Manyshot vs Yellow: 1d20 + 23 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 23 + 1 = 32
Damage: 1d8 + 17 + 1 + 1d8 + 17 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 17 + 1 + (5) + 17 + 1 = 42

That Adril Hestram similarly falls, his shape morphing back into the form of a similarly gray-skinned creature as the one Sahess felled.

Rapid shot vs Orange: 1d20 + 23 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 23 + 1 = 25

"Naughty, naughty boy, Adril, using doppelgangers to hide yourself," Arnaut clucks disapprovingly and shakes his head in disappointment. "Or are you even here, or cowering behind a table somewhere again?" Putting the large, angry, armored form of Sahess between him and the closest Adril, the bard pulls out a long peacock feather and a pair of fruit tarts. "Thankfully, I came prepared - naughty boys need their punishment, don't they?" He snarfs down the tarts and throws the feather at the further Adril.

All is says is that the material components of the spell are consumed in the casting - it never says how they're consumed. This made the most sense to me.

Maintain performance, 5 ft step, and cast persistent hideous laughter (Will 22 twice) on Orange.

Keeping this out of a GM Screen for…reasons.

SR Check: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32

Orange Will: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 10 - 2 = 111d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 10 - 2 = 11

Orange Will vs Hideous Laughter on his next turn: 1d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (3) + 10 - 2 = 111d20 + 10 - 2 ⇒ (6) + 10 - 2 = 14

Adril Hestram—the real Adril Hestram—begins laughing hysterically as Sahess slices down the last of the traitor’s body-doubles. Shemis saunters forward and kneels next to the man.

”Checkmate.”

Shemis stands up straight and looks at you all.

”As foreseen, you arrived. Thank you for bringing this traitor to the Society before me. His reign of terror ends today. I must convene what remains of the Ten in order to determine the course of action for Adril Hestram. I have been watching your efforts, Seekers. And while you all would rather further the selfish causes of the factions of the Society rather than ensure the safety of the Society’s leadership, you have proven loyal Pathfinders nonetheless, and you will be rewarded for your efforts. Now, please excuse me, there is work to be done.”

Shemis returns to the center of the room, gazing toward the windows.

Eventually, high-ranking members of the Society—Ambrus Valsin, Eliza Petulengro, Drendle Dreng, etc.—arrive in Skyreach to restore order amid the chaos wrought by Adril Hestram. Eliza meets your gazes and smiles.

”Thank you.”

Campaign Points:
Individual: The PC forgoes his or her faction mission in favor of protecting the Decemvirate at all costs. Yeah. They did that. Dick move. Fail.
Individual: The PC deals no needless damage to the Decemvirate’s property and steals none of the valuable relics held within the Sanctum of the Ten. Not counting Valicia’s eye against this, since it wasn’t really intended to be here, Valicia just happened to be stored in that variant mirror of life trapping. But that sword Sahess took absolutely counts. Success from: Arnaut, Jordan, Zhu Li.
Group: The PCs activate the osprey figurine and send it to take some sort of alert to Osprey of the attack. Fail
Group: The PCs prevent Adril from slaying Shemis. Success

Grand Totals:

Spoiler:

Jordan: 12

The PCs defeat Adril Hestram in area 23, ending his threat to the Pathfinder Society.

Secondary Success Conditions:
Individual: A PC earns 3 or more Campaign Points. When calculating this total (but not the total Campaign Points earned when assigning boons), treat the PC as having earned a Campaign Point for each of the two faction mission objects he or she attempted and fulfilled.

Tertiary Success Conditions:
Dark Archives
Spoiler:
1: Recover Valicia’s eye in Act 2. Success
2: Recover Valicia’s eye without triggering the contingency. Success

Liberty’s Edge

Spoiler:
1: successfully release Aistor Garislog’s psychic essence from the Pillar of Screaming Angels in area 3. Success
2: Host Aistor Garislog’s psychic essence in order to bring it back to Almas. Success

Sovereign Court

Spoiler:
1: Defeat Vothuemont’s Blade and bring it back to Taldor. Success
2: Keep the intelligent sword from revealing Prince Stavian’s betrayal to its master (the king purportedly slept with Vothuemont’s wife) to non-Sovereign Court PCs. Success
