Okay, first off, Jordan is absolutely terrified of Zhu Li now. Now that that's out of the way...

Jordan, eyes wide, slowly meanders into the room. "That was one hell of a ceremony. Do they all go like that?"

With that, Jordan will begin searching in and around the rooms he saw open during the first combat. He heals himself as he climbs the stairs.

Looking to heal at least 87 damage. Here we go.

Healing: 18d8 + 18 ⇒ (4, 1, 8, 1, 2, 6, 4, 3, 8, 4, 8, 1, 1, 7, 1, 2, 2, 8) + 18 = 89

18 charges later. Wand has 14 left

Perception, good hope: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35

| Strange Aeons | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

Jordan likewise comes across a number of empty vials on the floor of the rooms—four in each to be exact.

Dwale shrugs at Arnaut. ”Some noble from Edme. The Raven used magic to personally speak with Montose’s spirit. Don’t really know the full details beyond that.”

"We should definitely resupply before we head into that maze. In fact, I'd love a rest if we can get one. I'm halfway through my spells," Jordan shouts down to Arnaut, juggling a potion bottle in one hand. "Oh, and were there any bodies other than Gwale's? Or did we let them all run away. We should be sure to check those!"

I lost track. What bodies are around, and is there anything useful on them?

So...I’m going to be honest with you guys: the scenario doesn’t state a time table. It never explicitly states anything akin to “the PCs only have X hours to do Z,” but it implies that it’s a race against time to catch the baddies. But I also know what’s to come and honestly, with how you guys are currently, it’ll be difficult. I’m inclined to stick to a “you guys are against a clock” ruling because that’s how the scenario seems to be set up, but I also don’t want to send you guys to your deaths...I think this will be a sufficient compromise:

From all of the bodies and gear, selling it would get all of you 7,749 gold pieces each.

It’s weird how it’s worded (probably a byproduct of how scenarios were written back then) but this is part of the gold on your guys’ Chronicle sheet for this scenario. It says to give the PCs gold for completing the encounters rather than take away gold for NOT completing it, so...that’s what I’m going to go with. Literally the only thing of interest among the gear is that rod of wonder.

I’m going to say that you guys can definitely shop, but if you Rest then there will be consequences for doing so (some of which I may have to make up on the spot based on logical actions of others in the scenario, so fair warning).

Sahess taps herself with a wand of infernal healing... then does so again about a minute later... and so on, until she feels right as rain.

10 spent plus 4 earlier makes me at 22 now.

"They stole from us, killed a venture captain, and nearly killed us as well. No matter their reasoning, they have angered the dragon. I will not stand for this, and I will kill them so hard that they will piss themselves in the afterlife. I may quite literally eat the Red Raven." She looks about. "My gloves have nearly spent their energies. I cannot raise one of you should you fall again. I have much capability, but I am not able to save you at this time from death."

I mean, I can't blame anyone for being creeped out by Zhu Li animating a man's skin.

Zhu Li comes down from the balcony and rummages through her pack, tossing Sahess a pair of gloves identical to the ones on her own hands, one gem set into the glove at each finger. "I'll want them back when we're done, but there's a reason I keep two sets."

She looks around at the party, bringing up her wand to tap herself a few times while Sahess does much the same.

Wand Usage (10 Charges):
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

She holds up the carved ivory. "This is almost spent. Anyone need to use the last two charges?"

After taking care of that, she adds, "If we're to rest, what are we going to do about Cale? We could heal him, bring him back here, or we could kill him and he'll expire when my magic stops animating his skin."

Eliza returns to the Great Room soon thereafter with an armful of first-aid kits and begins treating her masked servants, who sustained significant damage from the attack themselves.

”So,” she says, not even looking up from bandaging her servants. ”Care to explain why there’s a skinless body in the Armory?” Her tone suggests that that’s not even in the top ten weirdest things she’s said this week.

"That would be Cale. He had an awful lot of spells on him, so I thought to myself, 'what should we do about that?'"

Zhu Li shrugs helplessly. "Best idea was locking his consciousness into his skin and then animating it like a golem. It worked, he flipped out and teleported away."

Sahess goes to the armory and dismembers and mutilates the corpse. Just separating the various limbs and head from the body so it's difficult to rejoin the spirit to it. She does not otherwise desecrate the corpse, but she wants to be sure there's no recovering from his predicament without resurrection or the like. Thankfully her greatsword is very much up to this task. "That is my opinion on what we should do about Cale." Sahess says, presuming anyone either followed her or went to see what the loud squishy noises were about.

| Strange Aeons | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

Eliza assuming no one stops Sahess gathers up the chopped-up remains of Cale the Calistrian and places them in a burlap sack, which she ties off and slings over her shoulder.

”That’s...certainly a solution, I suppose. So help me if the man is revived then I will do all in my power to prevent his leaving of the lodge!”

Eliza returns to the Great Room and casts a spell...

Spellcraft 20 or Knowledge (arcana) 25:

...and a giant mass of fallen rubble floats upward and deposits itself carefully on the front lawn of the lodge. After the rubble is deposited a number of unconscious servants lay unconscious on the ground. Eliza sighs and moves over to care for the unconscious servants.

”So, what else have you learned?”

"This friendly fellow," Arnaut says as he sits next to Dwale, "says that the Raven was here because the spirit of one 'Teppin Montrose' contacted him and claims to have been murdered by our very own Adril Hestram. Quite a serious accusation, especially here in Galt. Blood for blood and all that nonsense." He shrugs. "From the sounds of it, the Raven knows how to navigate the maze out back and can guide a good-sized platoon of accomplices through it. Also, Cale was paying the armory a visit simply because the opportunity presented itself. Oh, and some of your servants may not be who they claim to be - Dwale says their intel came from agents disguised as workers in the Lodge. Are you missing anyone?"

"We know the Red Raven was hired by a dead man, with a gripe against Adril Hestram. We know they gained access through the maze, should we go that way?"

| Strange Aeons | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

”Such an accusation is grave, indeed. If the Raven is able to navigate the Maze...” Eliza’s voice trails off.

| Strange Aeons | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

How the scallies got up there isn’t a mystery—they went up as servants and changed into their scallywag outfit inside the guest rooms. HOWEVER, because Arnaut said to check all the rooms (and assuming you all comply):

The group searches the grounds of the lodge high and low, but find nothing—that is until they come to Adril Hestram’s room.

The door to the room is locked, but Zhu Li easily unlocks it (or Eliza unlocks the door if asked). Laying upon Adril’s bed is a map of the Inner Sea Region written on in red ink. Handouts Updated

Beside the map rests a small statuette of green stone with a leather cord tied to it—the statuette depicts a simian humanoid. There are some crude engravings along it that Zhu Li identifies as her face pales—engraved on the statuette is a prayer in Abyssal to Angazhan, the demon lord of apes, savagery, and tyrants! Finally, upon the sitting table is a necklace with an emerald pendant. From the emerald stares out the image of a feminine face with a crown of entwined snakes Flavor; don’t worry about the feminine face too much. Handouts Updated

Eliza and Osprey await you near the entrance to the Maze of the Open Road. Both look somber and contemplative. A smudge of ash on Eliza’s cheek and disgusting stains on Osprey’s already filthy garb hint at the chaos of only moments ago. Eliza turns to you with a wistful sigh as Osprey speaks with a low, scratchy voice.

“This Red Raven struck at Adril Hestram for a reason. The truth is that we have suspected Hestram of treachery against the Pathfinder Society for months. The Decemvirate asked me to investigate personally. The Talespinning was not a prelude to Adril’s promotion, but rather a test of his loyalty.”

“A test,” Eliza says, “Adril Hestram appears to have failed.”

Osprey smiles, his thin lips showing comfort and humor belied by his penetrating, avian gaze. “It remains to be seen whether you, his most trusted field agents, may yet pass. Guilt by association is not fair, but in the Decemvirate’s eyes it is prudent, especially in these dangerous times. Your investigations thus far have proven you loyal Pathfinder agents. Venturing into the Maze of the Open Road and solving the mystery of Adril’s assassination will assure your loyalty to the Society, and will surely gain the approval of the Ten.”

Eliza steps forward, her hand curling into a triumphant fist. “I believe in you. I have since the first day we met. which for a number of you was today Go into the maze. Learn what you can of the Red Raven’s operation and how it ties in with Hestram. Come back and report to us, and we will coordinate our next move. You may stop in Woodsedge proper to purchase any equipment you may need, but you mustn’t dally or the assassins will get away!”

"Suspected treachery? Mind if we possibly confirm that one for ya?" Jordan relays the information about the idol, but he doesn't trust Osprey, so he mentions nothing of the map.

"That damned fight took out a large portion of my most powerful spells. We MUST head forward carefully. I vote, if you all will allow it, that we purchase a few scrolls of the more handy spells. In particular, I'd love Haste and Good Hope, along with maybe a Dimension Door if things get particularly gruesome."

Scroll of Haste - 375 gp. 5 targets.
Scroll of Good Hope - 525 gp. 7 targets.
Scroll of Dimension Door - 700 gp. 3 targets (self included).

Jordan himself has (apparently) 12,000 gp available. Anybody want to suggest something important for him to buy? This is my first experience, as a player, up at these higher levels. Those First Aid Gloves seem a nice touch. Sadly, though, I don't have the book.

Gonna wait to hear if you guys are buying anything as well as what you guys are buying before I proceed with the story; remember, the 7,749 gp you each received (Arnaut got 7,749 gp, Jordan got 7,749 gp, Zhu Li got 7,749 gp, AND Sahess got 7,749 gp) is a part of the gold you receive on your Chronicle for this scenario—it is not scenario-provided gold that’s forgotten about once the scenario ends!

GM, I'm a bit confused about what you're trying to communicate. Are you encouraging us to purchase things with this gold since we'll be able to keep any items obtained that way after the scenario? Or are you encouraging us to wait until after we finish this scenario to spend the money?

And I will admit to throwing around powerful spells thinking we could rest soon afterwards. Sorry - my bad!

Arnaut finishes healing himself with his wand and grins at Sahess. "I'd hate to keep our new friend waiting," he says cheekily, "as long as you're standing between me and all his archer friends."

@Arnaut: I’m saying that the 7,749 gp you all just got is a fraction of the ~23K you get on your Chronicle for completing this scenario—if you purchase an item with that money then document it on an Inventory Tracking Sheet for your character and I’ll be sure to document your spendings once you actually get your Chronicles.

And I’m not encouraging you to go and buy stuff, I’m begging you to do so!

| Strange Aeons | Prey for Death | ◆◇↻

For the sake of time I’m going to advance the narrative; if there’s anything Zhu Li would’ve bought that she didn’t explicitly state, then just say so the next time you post and it’s an easy-enough retcon.

BTW, a LOT of railroading ahead; makes my life a lot easier.

At Jordan’s question Osprey looks him dead in the eye while Eliza looks askance—neither say a single word.

Sense Motive 10:
They are still testing your loyalties. Pushing the subject isn’t likely to improve your grade.

The Maze of the Open Road appears to be an ordinary hedge maze—a square with 300’ to a side while having 20’ tall hedge walls lined with bright red roses at irregular intervals.

Knowledge (nature) 15:
These are Narven’s Tear roses, legendary Arthfell blossoms said to have gone extinct over 200 years ago.

And now, for two spoilers for those of you who are cheeky enough to attempt these (you no-following-the-scenario’s-expectations jerks):

If you try to fly over and lower yourself into the maze:
As you fall, an invisible force stops you just dead of the top of the maze, as if it were covered with a lid.

If you try to cut your way through the walls:
Despite only appearing to be about a foot thick from above, as you cut and cut at the hedge walls you never seem to see an end in sight to the foliage. As you throw your arms up in defeat you find that you’ve apparently only moved about a foot from the edge of the wall, despite however long you were cutting through the hedge.

With little else to do, you walk through the intended entrance to the maze like a bunch of barbarians! (No offense, Sahess), following the not-so-hidden trail left behind by the Red Raven and his companions DC 10 Survival check; take-10 so that I can handwaive it.

The shadowy pathways stretch and turn, surely taking you outside the dimensions of the maze as viewed from the lodge’s rear lawn. The leafy walls virtually bristle with enchantment, and the atmosphere thrums with the sense that once inside the Maze of the Open Road, you have somehow left the mundane world behind. At irregular intervals side paths branch off from your chosen corridor, leading who knows where. After several minutes the path widens to reveal a long causeway roofed by crumbling marble arches. Far up ahead the stone pathway opens onto a large plaza containing a handful of ruined stone structures, ancient buildings that look like abandoned temples. An enormous marble colossus of a robed figure looms upon a pedestal at the center of the courtyard, looking down upon a field of lifelike statues arrayed in a chaotic pattern. All bear terrified looks and are posed in grotesque defensive postures, arms out to stave off some unseen danger. Map Updated

I should also mention, ahem North is to the right on this map!

The Raven’s trail splits off into two paths, one to the east down and one to the west up.

Bit of a narrative oversight; the scenario assumes that you guys fully explore this area rather than do the sensible thing and just keep going through the maze, so I’m accommodating for that. I’m going to dictate the order that you guys explore this place because it’s easier for me. Just go along with it.

The group turns to the western chamber. So damaged are the walls of this roofless structure that the building’s original purpose is impossible to determine. Amid the rubble within stand five statues of primitive human men, Mwangi warriors by the looks of them. Each wears a simple grass skirt and bone fetish necklaces, and each also bears a considerable length of chain.

A sibilant female voice seems to come from the air around you, snaking its way into your brains without actually making a sound.

“Ssssso many vissssitorsss! Sssso many men with weaponsss and murder on their mindssssss. For yearssss and yearsss no one would vissit Condria’sss garden. Ssssso many yearsssss. Ssssso lonely. But now you come in numberssss! With your ssscarlet cloaksss and your ssswords of ssteel. It issss good that you have come, for now you sshall never leave!”

The Mwangi statues vibrate as they slowly change. Their stony composition dissipates into that of flesh. The newly risen group of men, covered in elaborate full-body paint that includes brazen white animal skulls painted on their faces, open their eyes to reveal their eyes as nothing more than angry red orbs!

Knowledge (nature or religion):
These men are members of the Bekyar Mwangi—a tribe of cultists who adhere to the teachings of the demon lord Angazhan.

With a glottal war cry they all pounce at Sahess with primal bloodlust!

White runs all the way past Zhu Li, Jordan, and Arnaut and moves to the back of Sahess provokes from Zhu Li, Arnaut, and Jordan if any of you guys can take an AoO.

The rest of the tribal men move up next to Sahess as they appear to wait for something Readied actions: attack once Cyan’s turn is over—also, with how the map is laid out I’m going to say that Yellow can occupy the space he’s currently in, but that he’s also squeezing.

Finally, the Cyan Mwangi steps up next to Sahess and swings around his spiked chain and using its centripetal force to strike at the nagaji—more specifically her legs!

Cyan Primary Trip vs Sahess: 1d20 + 22 ⇒ (17) + 22 = 39

Cyan wraps his weapon around Sahess’s legs and pulls, bringing her to the ground—and as she does the Mwangi men all swing wildly at the woman in a violent display of animalistic fury!

A LOT of attacks against Sahess:
AoOs resolve before Sahess hits the ground; i.e. before she’s prone. (Jason Bulmahn said something here that implies that being successful on a trip attempt and falling prone are two separate things. Basically, all of the tribesmen are attacking Sahess while she’s midair.

Cyan AoO: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (4) + 19 = 23
Damage: 2d4 + 8 ⇒ (1, 2) + 8 = 11

Black AoO w/flanking: 1d20 + 19 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 19 + 2 = 24

Red AoO: 1d20 + 19 ⇒ (1) + 19 = 20

Yellow AoO w/squeezing: 1d20 + 19 - 4 ⇒ (17) + 19 - 4 = 32

The attack rolls after this resolve against Sahess’s prone AC.

Cyan Secondary: 1d20 + 19 - 5 ⇒ (4) + 19 - 5 = 18

Readied actions all trigger.

Actually, no. Made a black arrow to show White’s movement from last round.

Cyan Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Yellow Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12

Jordan’s shots all connect against White, but even after all of that abuse he is still standing.

Also why do all the creatures get an AoO against me before I fall? Being tripped does not make you subject to an AoO unless there's a rule I've missed at some point. Much like being moved as part of a bull rush doesn't provoke.

Box text for the room to the east (down) since it’s semi-relevant: Age has conspired against this brittle structure, which must once have been a small chapel. The ceiling collapsed long ago, and huge gashes in the walls suggest that the rest of the place might topple to the ground any minute now. A bulky stone statue at the center of the building is difficult to make out from the causeway, but appears to be a giant serpent of some sort.

A hole in the state is created, and out slithers an orange serpent as if shedding its stony skin. As the creature rears its hooded like a cobra head it stares out with a human-like face—all save for the blood-red orbs that are its eyes.

ID Serpent: Knowledge (dungeoneering) 20 (5 higher for Kirin Style):

It varies, Jordan. Gonna say that it currently has cover against you, so +4 to AC.

Zhu Li, gonna ignore the second post as it’s a duplicate of the first. Also, where did that random +18 to damage on the second attack come from?

Jordan manages to hit Black and kill him their AC is TRASH and then hits Cyan with the rest of his attacks, but he’s still standing...until Sahess slices his head clean off!

Naga Reflex: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (14) + 12 = 26

The remaining Mwangi hear the clanking of Sahess’s armor and assume—correctly—that she stood up.

Sahess literally tears Red a new one with that first attack, but he is still standing! After the second hit...not so much. The woman then tears a chunk of flesh off of Yellow with her teeth, but the last Mwangi is still standing nonetheless.

That's an honest question that I, the GM, am asking you as players. There's a pseudo-hard-mode written in for this; the scenario gave me the ability to combine multiple combats in this particular area because of in-game stuff. I combined the fights against the Mwangi and the Naga together because both fights on their own were laughably easy and together were actually a semi-decent threat. There are two more not-laughably-easy fights in this section that, again, I am allowed to trigger as I see fit. Would you guys care for the additional challenge? (Note: as per standard Hard Mode options, the decision has to be unanimous; if even one person doesn't want to do it then I won't do it)
