Angrily, Uzar-Kus swivels his heads back and forth, trying to decide which foe to bite.

bite vs Lucifer, debilitating injury: 1d20 + 16 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 16 - 4 = 15
But his luck seems to have finally shifted.

Even more angrily, he begins to flail his arms and shout magical words, calling forth yet another spell...

Uhvat and Ashwell's readied actions are triggered. I'll resolve them in the order they were posted.

With a vicious swing of his lash, Uhvat completely shatters the serpent's concentration and he loses his spell!

Just a fraction of a second later, Ashwell hurls several bolts of magical force at Uzar-Kus, and these too slam home with great impact!

Blood pouring from his wounds, Uzar-Kus squints angrily at the pathfinders! "You sssshalll pay for thissss!"

The reliable stone snake heads continue their steady work of spitting globules of acid, this time choosing Yanda as their target...

... but she twists out of harm's way.

The blue constrictor snake continues to dutifully snap at the wounded serpentman...
Bite: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
... but to no avail.

Tiawask hurries over to Kala's unconscious body and picks up the healing wand. "Uzar-Kus! I shall not soon forget the days I spent as your prisoner! It is a sweet sweet joy to help my new friends bring about your downfall!" The serpent-folk hisses back angrily, as if he has much to say, and little time left to say it.

My understanding is that the readied action disrupting the spell also removes the trigger for the AoO that the spell casting might have provoked. For example, if the readied action *hadn't* disrupted the spell, then he would have attempted to cast defensively, which might have prevented the AoO from being triggered. But since the readied action stopped the spell, there was no longer a basis for casting defensively. This might be wrong though so if someone can find a rules basis for interpreting it the way that Uhvat is describing I'll be happy to take a look at it. As it is, PF1e's ready action rules can really just shut down casters already, so adding AoOs on top of that would really be insult to injury, imho.

Yanda looks to see if there is some way she could expedite the disarming process, but first making sure someone is tending to the fallen. There is a grim look on her face and she casts an occasional glance at Kyra and her fallen companion. She looks about to say something a couple of times, but he mouth seems clamped in a kind of grimace. Her feeling of guilt is not helped by fleeting but treacherous thoughts when she downed the critter.

Maybe it was just the spell? The smell wasn't THAT bad, was it? I mean I suffered though troglodytes and even made friends with a few of them.

Sorry for the posting delay - this was the last week of the semester so real life was hectic. Also, I wanted to give Uhvat a chance to post, for reasons that will soon become clear.

Also, sorry for what's about to happen. Though at least some of the blame should go to Jason Buhlman (the author of this particular level of the Spire)...

Both Ashwell and Uhvat retreat out of the room, with Uhvat carrying the unconscious and near death Tofang with him. Uhvat, you didn't move yourself on the map and I also can't be bothered to figure out exactly how far you could move with Tofang (what would a Wayang weigh anyway?) so I've just moved you through the open door around the corner, which certainly gets you out of line of effect from the statues and seems a reasonable distance when haste is factored in.

    Acid dmg: 2d4 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3 All 3 points are converted to non-lethal by Ablative Barrier
Yanda, I looked up whether your Protection from Arrows buff would work here and was surprised to see that I don't think it will, mainly because Prot Arrows gives you DR 10/magic, and this is clearly a magical effect. However, Ablative Barrier will work as usual.

As Uzar-Kus collapses in defeat, Tiawask begins to laugh, almost hysterically, with glee. "Ah, brave serpent-folk "Lord" - she utters the last word with complete sarcasm and derision - "it seems that your mighty plans have gone awry, it seems that you are not the conqueror that you thought yourself. No, no, not for you the sweet embrace of mighty Ydersius and the acclaim of all serpentdom throughout the Darklands and beyond, that might have met you had you indeed led your people to victory and established the dominion of this land of Vissk-Thar..."

She pauses and gestures - perhaps a bit condescendingly - at the remnants of the battered pathfinder team that litters the floor. "Oh ho, look at you now, mighty Uzar-Kus, dying at the hands of these mere adventurers! I told you I should have my revenge, and now you see, I have, I have! And yet, it needn't have been thus, oh no, my poor sweet foolish hatchling - how stupid you were! - if only you had waited, had the patience to bide your time and know your place, ah how glorious it all might have been - first we would have destroyed that heretic Sartoss and his abominable cult of followers of the false god Kro'akoth, reclaiming the upper floors of Vissk-Thar, and then, as more flocked to our banner, by my side we might even have descended to the depths to overthrow Nhur Athemon himself! But, alas, like all the young, you lacked patience, and that was your undoing, and now it shall fall to me to rebuild Vissk-Thar!"

As she speaks, the two heads of the dying Uzar-Kus swivel painfully to watch and listen, their eyes widening with astonishment. "Youuuu!?!" both mouths gasp in simultaneous amazement.

"Aye, aye, sweet hatchling, 'tis I, Ziszkaa, high priest of Ydersius, rightful lord of Vissk-Thar, and your father. I knew, I had certainty, when first I nestled the eggs in the glow of the Spire itself, that your egg was a special one, that you would surpass all your litter mates, and when you were born with two heads I knew it again for a certainty, and indeed the magic was strong in you, that was a great gift the Spire and Ydersius bestowed upon you, but alas, if only it had given you some morsel, some small crumb, of wisdom, that you might have known the meaning of loyalty and not tried to usurp your very own father!"

Throughout this speech, Tiawask's face struggles to bear a multitude of emotions. By the end, what had been maniacal laughter has changed to jagged sobs of grief. Indeed, her very appearance transforms, as the human face of Tiawask, female wizard of Thornkeep, melts away and is replaced with that of Ziszkaa, a male serpentfolk with some passing resemblance to the dying Uzar-Kus.

Technically, it is a standard action to dismiss the disguise but I hope you will allow me to hand-wave that for cinematic effect. It has no mechanical impact on the game.

Ziszkaa lifts his head and wipes his tears before turning to gaze at the remaining Pathfinders. "If I were a Lightlander such as yourselves, I suppose I should be expected to thank you for freeing me from my usurper son and assisting my revenge. No doubt I would give you the keys to the kingdom or proclaim my undying friendship or some other such nonsense. Feh! Here in the land of Vissk-Thar we do things our own way. I shall give you the honor of being my first sacrifices to Lord Ydersius - Praise his glory! - and now I shall send you to him!"

With that, a sickening wave of evil washes across the pathfinders.
    Negative energy: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 3) = 10
Will save for half, from everyone but Ashwell (who is out of range)

Then the Blue constrictor snake charges towards Lucifer!
    Bite, charge: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 5 + 2 = 11
    ... uselessly.

    End of Round 7

Pathfinders are up! The bold may act!

Note that Haste will expire just before Ashwell's turn in the initiative order. However, because Ashwell's initiative position changed due to earlier readied actions, this means that Haste will still be in effect for everyone's turns (except Ashwell himself).

Lucifer, you've completed 1 round of work on the acid-spitting trap. You don't know how long it will take to disarm (I've made a secret roll for this) but the rounds don't have to be consecutive - so you can join the fight and then resume work on the trap as needed - the trap will, of course, keep going off until it is fully disarmed).

As I tried to explain in the Discussion thread, by having Ziszkaa reveal his true form I was merely trying to make the entire scene more dramatic for your entertainment purposes, not trying to have him give away his standard action for the round. But I'm afraid I've just confused the situation. So, to simplify matters, I'll retcon this to say that he *has not* dismissed his disguise, but instead has just verbally explained - to Uzar-Kus and to the pathfinders - who he really is. When/if you kill Tiawask, you will see her in her true, serpentfolk, form. I hope this clarifies the situation and helps alleviate any sense that I am unfairly giving the bad guy two standard actions. Sorry for the confusion!

Firewarden Yanda is unable to resist the uncommonly potent power of Ydersius. It is almost as if the temple itself, as a shrine to the foul god, is amplifying its power. 10 points of dmg, all of which come off of Yanda's temp hp, leaving her with 8 temp hp, 11 normal hp, and 14 points of non-lethal.

Yanda, reminder that I believe you have one bomb remaining. On your last turn, your first bomb dropped Uzar-Kus, so you never used the second one. Does this change your posted actions?

Lucifer becomes almost undead himself, at least for a moment, and the negative energy from Ydersius heals him rather than harming him. 4 dmg reduced to 0 - Lucifer is at full strength. Then he slashes at the snake, wounding it.

Uhvat is unable to resist the power of Ydersius and collapses to the ground, unconscious and dying. If the +2 vs reptilians applies then I'll retcon this to a pass and adjust accordingly. Uhvat, please let me know. Also, you can't drop your ectoplasmic lash can you? And, assuming you are unconscious, please make a stabilization check.

Even unconscious, Kala is able to resist the worst of the evil god's power. Unfortunately, she resumes dying. Kala, stabilization check needed. Also, don't forget your extra hp from Aspect of the Stinky Bear - I think with those hp you are at -13 now?

In fact, in over 80 tables GM'ed, I think this is only my second PC death. But suddenly, something happens … a divine force is entering him!

Tofang is turning into an Empyreal Revenant!!

    Tofang:
Ha ha that is brilliant. While it's hard to imagine this fight going another 10 rounds, if it somehow does that would be just amazing to have Tofang rise back up and reenter the fray! What a battle this has been!

    Giant Cyan cobra - ? dmg; no longer visible;
    Tiawask - 5 dmg; 2 images; wand of CMW;
    Blue Constrictor Snake - 8 dmg; no longer visible;

The waves of evil emanating from Tiawask slay Tofang, though it appears that the small hero is undergoing some sort of transformation even in death and may yet have some role to play...

Yanda is also unable to resist the power of Ydersius and collapses, unconscious. Yanda takes 16 points of dmg - 8 come off of her remaining false life temp hp and the other 8 off her normal hp, leaving her with 56 dmg and 14 non-lethal dmg. She is unconscious but not dying.

Ashwell resists the worst of the negative energy filling the room. 8 dmg, one of which is absorbed by Ash's 1 remaining temp hp.

Ashwell, I'm not 100% certain that it has come up previously but since you have all been fighting lots of serpentfolk for two levels now I'll just give it to you on the assumption that by now you all would have learned that serpentfolk are immune to mind-affecting effects. Feel free to retcon your actions (and save your reroll - you might need it!).

Kala, after fighting so valiantly, finally succumbs to the evil power of Ydersius and joins her brave Stinky in death. Will one of the heroes survive to bear the tragic news to Krokum?

Lucifer swings at Tiawask with his shortsword, bursting one of her images. Regardless of whether or not Ashwell provides a flank this is a miss, but close enough that it will burst an image regardless.

    Uhvat r8 stabilization check DC 10: 1d20 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 - 2 = 20
    Uhvat Will vs r8 channel: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16 Fail, takes full 16 hp dmg
After initially manages to stabilize his wounds, Uhvat is unable to resist the power of Ydersius a second time and finally succumbs. Unless Uhvat has a reroll or a boon of some kind he is dead.

    It is Ashwell's (retconned) turn!

Ash will cast a magic missile against the snake priest.

    Damage 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

He then moves forward and provides a flank, trusting his mirror images to help protect him.

The undine psychic tries to blast Tiawask with magical bolts of force but they peter out without any impact due to Tiawask's innate resistance to magic. Then Ashwell steps forward, dagger in hand, in order to assist Lucifer's efforts.

The stone snake heads continue mindlessly spitting acid, but to no effect.

Tiawask steps backwards 5' and casts a spell, conjuring a magical dagger made of force which strikes at Lucifer...

    Start of Round 10

Only a minute has passed since the pathfinders first entered the temple of Ydersius and much has happened. Two valiant members of the party remain standing, trying to defeat the treacherous Tiawask/Zizskaa!

Lucifer and Ashwell can act. Note that you may want to look at the map while considering movement options in order to get/maintain a flanking position for Lucifer's sneak attack. I think Ashwell can't access the map so it would be helpful if someone else can move him on the map.

Ash will move to provide flanking for the rogue, using acrobatics if necessary.

    Acrobatics 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28

After moving, he slashed out at the caster, trying to aid Lucifer’s accuracy.

    Aid another vs DC 10 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

If someone would move me, please. So I am providing flanking, but not an additional +2 from aid another.
