If she is casting a spell, she is affecting combat, and must be on the map.
If she does not cast any spell (guidance and Elysium's Call included) she is not at risk.

I wonder if I should have entangled it instead?

Donna the Viper |

Then, she will be on the map, please roll initiative for her.

Obsidean, if what you just did is not considered movement, can you take a five foot step to the right at the very end of your turn?

![]() |

Sure.

![]() |

Oh, yes sorry all. I do not threaten except during my turn and only when I use kinetic blade.

![]() |

The Fear will save is only once or every turn?
Also how long is the shaken? (Or do you tell us when it is over?)
And good to know with the threaten, from our local meta every character is using spiked gauntlets to always threaten.

![]() |

It appears Obsidian does not. I do not know if the lack of negative levels will change the stun result. But, even if not, he'll be fine. Also, as I asked in gameplay in my post, are the temp HP gone by the start of this fight?
Yeah, I know about the spiked gauntlet thing. I personally don't ascribe to it for all of my character because not all of them would wear spiked gauntlets. Obsidian is a perfect example. If he would never use the spiked gauntlet, why have it? As odd as it sounds coming from me, with this Obsidian monstrosity, spiked gauntlets are too metagamey for me.

When we get to the start of turn 2, Candi would like to delay until after Elric. If Elric could do the following, that would be really great:
1) Have T-Rex #1 take a five foot step away from the demon. I assume the T-Rex has 10 ft reach and such a move would give Candi a little more space between Obsidean and the T-Rex when she pounce charges.
2) Summon anything that would threaten the demon to it's NE, opposite where Candi will be attacking. This would provide a flanking bonus to her attack.
I did a stupid thing with Candi. I didn't realize you still take an armor non-proficiency attack penalty with mithral plate. I thought mithral plate was treated as medium armor for ALL purposes. However, it's treated as medium armor for all purposes EXCEPT proficiency. So, Candi is taking a -3 penalty to hit, and a flanking bonus would be helpful against something this hardcore.
Also, rather than delay things by inserting her into the initiative order, I'm fine with leaving Donna off the map for this encounter. I wasn't clear with my thinking about her, and I'm fine with "paying the price" for my lack of clarity. I have removed her icon from the map.

Candi, I did make some space for you, but I thought the haste would be more effective against a creature with a nasty fear effect (not that the summoned creature would run away immediately (as it would be a far lesser summon as the T-Rexes)). I hope it helped anyways.

It's all good. Haste makes sense (as it almost always does). I'm just cursing myself for being seduced by the higher AC and bling value of the mithral full plate and not thinking through the full implications of wearing such armor.

For the sonic damage from Slim's Discordant Voice to apply in melee, the attacker has to be within 30ft of Slim. I'll be getting close enough next round. Darn action economy constraints!

For future, on summoned animals (and animal companions, etc). They should act like critters... so will close on close enough to bite/claw/what-have-you, and should not think very tactically. It was mostly moot this fight, but could come into play.
This is how I GM them, and how I play them.

![]() |

Can Candi sunder the mithral plate she is wearing in order to get out of it quickly (a matter of rounds rather than minutes)?
Donna will be on the map for the next encounter, so please roll initiative for her.

![]() |

Are you planning on being outside of it for your next encounter?
You have time to take it off, if that is what you are wondering. Just update your tagline.
Also, for the record, all round-per-level stuff will have gone away.

![]() |

As an FYI - Friday-Sunday is going to be covered by a backup GM, as I will be working Con of the North all weekend!

![]() |

Have Fun.

Candi would be going back to her +1 Deathless Mithral Agile Breastplate, which I would assume she is carrying in her Handy Haversack.
I'll go ahead and do that and assume that someone is helping Candi which halves the normal time to remove plate mail (1d4+1 minutes) and don a breastplate (4 minutes)
Remove Full Plate: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
Two and a half minutes to remove the full plate and 2 minutes to don the breastplate for a total of 4.5 minutes.

I will respect the democracy, but I'd like to express my view.
#1 I am playing the 14-15 tier to do the cool things and face the powerful monsters. This is a special, not a deep rooted, heavy RP scenario. They have always been and will always be combat laden scenarios. I have RP characters. They are fun, but..
#2 If we are planning to face the balor eventually why, why would you want to face it after you have used resources on other fights?
I am normally quite passive in terms of options presented to the party. I have an opinion, but if we don't choose that, meh. This is something I feel strongly about. Not only out of game, but in-game there are literally no others more suited to deal with the balor than us. The highest level NPC venture captains are 13ish I think, and those are the highest. Death is a status condition at this level, and a fairly inexpensive one at that. Push comes to shove, I'll pay to bring you back. And I say that considering the fact that if any of you die, it is probably because I did first.
I appreciate you reading my view and considering it.
P.S. I apologize for Obsidian's response.

![]() |

“I like this plan! I’m excited to be a part of it!”

![]() |

I respect your opinion, Obsidean. Roll your dice, bro.' It's what you enjoy.
And as a courtesy, please indulge any of us who enjoy a little role-play along the way, even if this is just a Special.
No need to have a disgruntled player at the table. If Obsidean wants his way, let's let him have it.
That's Slim's vote.

![]() |

Despite my passionate words, as I said previously, I will respect the democracy. I will be disappointed, but far from disgruntled.
Obsidian looks disgustingly at his team. "I was beginning to think that the team they stuck me with was actually close to my power level and dedication. It would seem that I was wrong. You are puny, fleshy mortals that run scared when something truly formidable comes along. Are you so selfish that you would care only for your own lives? Are you admitting that you are truly just windbag charlatans? Why would the leaders make me babysit the likes of you in this dire situation? You do not deserve to be among the ranks of the Seekers." And with that, Obsidian storms off in search of the Venture Captain.
I'll try to rp more, noted.

GM Blake |

Wait... so I'll be sub-GMing after you start a fight with a balor?
I think Silbeg timed this on purpose so he'd have an alibi! ;)

![]() |

Bah. I expect heads to roll this afternoon.
Besides, you all changed your mind after I said I’d be getting the sub. I

![]() |

I would like to have bought a casting of Freedom of Movement before we arrived at the Balor.
Edit: Nevermind, the combat has already started.

![]() |

Then Candi is STARK NAKED! I will adjust her AC accordingly.

Hubba, hubba!

** spoiler omitted **
Already pointed out to me...
Sorry, been trying to run this encounter faster and while prepping stuff for Con of the North. Party wins without a death.

![]() |

I appreciate you all humoring me. Thank you.

GM Blake |

I think we're missing something...much as I hate to bring it up.
I can blow you up before I go to bed.

![]() |

So, I did miss the entangling infusion.
reflex DC27: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (18) + 17 = 35
So, a save. Regardless, luckily, it would not have affected any of its hits, or attacks against it.
Remind me to chunk high level combat into smaller bits... so I only have to read 2 players' actions... instead of 5. Gets way too confusing.

![]() |

Well, I feel less good about this outcome.

GM Blake |

I saw the following:
Candi has Fire Resist 30
Slimjim has Fire Resist 10
Donna has Improved Evasion
Ayako's boon usage
Any other resistances, evasions, boons, amulets, re-rolls, amulets, or talismen?
