I try not to pull out these full shenanigans when playing Obsidian, but getting reamed during the surprise round with Adamantine weapons kinda forced my hand.
I understand your distaste for Kineticists. As I played Obsidian through the levels I did not plan ahead, so I slowly realized how ridiculous he became.

![]() |

I find a lot of characters can turn out this way. My brother built a Shield Champion Brawler off of Dragon's Demand campaign mode chronicles and didn't have to build up through the levels. He got Shield Mastery after a couple games and it just went ludicrous.

![]() |

Well I have 2 kineticists, 1 semiretired catastrophe of an aether kineticist that is just... BAD (level 7) and a air kineticist (Level 6) and I see the VAST difference system masery makes when building this class.
And I have no idea what they thaught at paizo with some options for the kineticist. (Especially anything that allows more then 1 attack per turn or some of the really nasty utility wild talents that are just insane and scenariobreaking.)
And I agree that some characters just "turn out" to be strong, but some of the nastiest build are happening when you apply a lot of AP/GM credits at once.
Emerald spire was especially nasty for this as it leads to a ready to play level 12 character with an WBL that is just... out of bounds if you use GM-credit.

Important News!
My wife spent $3 on Amazon Prime so I can watch the Puppy Bowl while working at the library today.
That is all.

Obsidean, no apologies necessary. I wouldn't worry too much about being overpowered in combat. That's what you built your character to do, and I'm happy to see Obsidean have his moments of glory. Fortunately for other types of players, that's not the only feature of the game.
I've built a few combat monsters, but I get bored too easy when playing them, just going on mental snooze until the GM calls for Initiative rolls. I'd rather be engaged as a face or skill monkey in between the usual three-per-scenario combat encounters.
I think it's all about player/GM preferences. The best scenarios offer something for all types.

![]() |

Obsidean, please don't take that to mean I have anything against you, or your character. I completely understand using the abilities you have, and Obsidian is far from the most broken kineticist I have seen.
As for characters that "turn out strong", I have my own... my gunslinger 5/inquisitor 10... who you all met briefly at the beginning... Munny.

![]() |

It's all about attitude for me, if you're using it to overshadow the table and prevent others from doing anything, or working with the party and making sure you give them chances to influence the session. Ayako personally feels grateful to have some solid minion- I mean, associates to support, as she does very poorly on her own.

![]() |

Oh, I very rarely apologize for my characters. This is because I play many powerful characters but play them in such a way as to not ruin other people's fun. An unfortunate player is always the reason fun is ever sucked. It is not a build, or personality of a character it is the player. I generally a fun person to play with, not because I believe it is inherent to my person, but because I take much effort to be. Fun games are fun because of the players. One can play a bad game system and still have a fun time.
Something that I will likely never do that technically Obsidian can is full attack with the kinetic blade. That is broken as all get up. But, I would use it if we are looking at a TPK.

I stand corrected. I mistakenly read the false modesty as an apology of sorts. ;-) Ha, ha.

GM Silbeg, Thanks for the aid token! It helped save the rogue that got critted by a fiendish wasp while it had smite good active! Never seen a single crit drop someone at level 5. Also Sister Ayako got to go flying!

![]() |

Do we need a "marching order" for this area? If so, may I suggest
Obsidean
Candi and Donna
Slim
Elric
Sister Ayako
Alternatively, Slim could be up front as he has our best perception.

Obsidian finds traps in a bit of a brute force manner. That said, it is rare for a trap to affect him in a major way. However, if my charging forward is causing you to feel less useful, I can always back off.

![]() |

I’m totally fine with Obsidean going first, and perhaps I’m overthinking things.

I'm going to be a local con, CaptainCon, this afternoon and evening and all day tomorrow. So, my postings to here might be limited.

Obsidian: 286/301 (150NL) [ CHA Drain 4, STR Drain 1, Bleed 4, Staggered, grappled]
GM, based on my records it should be this:
Obsidian: 280/301 (135NL) [ CHA Drain 4, STR Drain 1, Bleed 4, Staggered, grappled]
I have not actually accepted any burn. It has come off of my internal buffer.

I am confused by this... but that's probably my lack of knowledge on kineticists. What's an internal buffer?
EDIT: So, you spent 2 points of burn up front to set up a pool of burn you could use later?
I will edit the line.

![]() |

EDIT: So, you spent 2 points of burn up front to set up a pool of burn you could use later?I will edit the line.
Basically, yes.
Internal Buffer (Su): At 6th level, a kineticist’s study of her body and the elemental forces that course through it allow her to form an internal buffer to store extra energy. The buffer starts empty and doesn’t replenish each day, but the kineticist can accept 1 point of burn to add 1 point to the buffer as a full-round action, to a maximum of 1 point total. This maximum increases to 2 points at 11th level and to 3 points at 16th level. Once the kineticist adds points to her buffer, they remain indefinitely until she spends them. When she would otherwise accept burn, a kineticist can spend 1 point from her buffer to avoid accepting 1 point of burn. She cannot spend more than 1 point from her buffer in this way for a single wild talent. Points spent from the internal buffer don’t activate elemental overflow or add to its effects. Similarly, this buffer can be used to exceed the limit on the number of points of burn the kineticist can accept in a single turn.

I am unclear how Obsidian has an AC of 14. Nevermind I just figured it out.

So, next question, am I still staggered?

At the con all day today, and since I'm not a guest at the hotel, I don't have access to wifi there. I'll see what I can do, but I may be limited to posts from my phone with all the difficulty inherent in that.

Donna the Viper |

I'm actually very fond of Donna and would prefer not to RP her suicide. Mechanically, I guess she would try to bite herself to death, though another option might be a suicidal charge against the seraptis demon. I'm not sure what other options she might have.
If she's going to bite herself to death, that could take a while. She has 81 hp, and her bite does 1d2-3 damage, so she'll be inflicting one point of non-lethal damage on herself per round. I don't know if she would be vulnerable to her own poison or not. If she is vulnerable to her own poison, I don’t think she can voluntarily fail a saving throw against poison as that rule allowing the voluntary failure of saving throws appears to only apply to magic (p. 217 of the CRB).
Assuming that she is affected by her own poison, she’ll need to fail a DC 16 Fort save with her +9 Fort save modifier. Should we begin this on her next turn?

![]() |

As she acted, I will be doing it on her next turn.
What she will likely do is just coup de grace herself (this is called out on the monster's ability) -- so she bites herself hard. This means she'll autocrit, and have to make a DC 10+dmg fort save. I think that she is likely vulnerable to her own poison, but she will not be able to voluntarily fail the save.
I will roll it out so that you don't have to. It is possible that as folks see her trying that they will do something (they cannot respond to what has not happened yet, though)

![]() |

Folks, Slim is willing to use saving finale to permit someone a re-roll on a failed save, but he's acting and reacting in-character. He hasn't heard or seen any indication yet that it's either needed or requested.

Donna the Viper |

One last Donna-related question - I had specifically said that she was watching the door to the west in the conference room. Is there any chance this would have given her a 50% avoidance chance because she was essentially averting her eyes?
I didn't want to use any rerolls for Donna, either my PFS reroll or Slim's saving finale. Hopefully, we can kill this demon quickly and then subdue Donna before she finishes killing herself (something that I think will take more than a single round). Since Candi has the usual familiar's empathic link with Donna, I'm assuming that Candi would be instantly aware of Donna's suicidal state.
I apologize if I appear to be wasting time on this, but I actually do very often get more concerned about my familiars and animal companions than I do about the PCs involved. I have a lion shaman who would definitely sacrifice himself to save his animal companion, and I'd be much less unhappy if it was Candi trying to kill herself.

![]() |

Candi could just leave the killing of the demon to the others and bludgeon Donna into unconsciousness.
Also, I was just looking back over my last action and I had already factored in being grappled. That is where the -4 was coming from. I dunno if it matters, but thought that I would say it.

Should we (can we?) find some restoration spell casting or scrolls for Obsidean's Cha and Str drain? I'll kick in whatever I can from my share of any loot we've picked up.

![]() |

It is kinda meh. If possible, sure but I'm not overly concerned.

![]() |

As there are hundreds of Pathfinders in Nerosyn (as well as it being a Metropolis of 64K people, you can easily buy a Restoration spell or two.
380 gp/2PP per. It will take two as Obsidean is drained from two different stats.

![]() |

@ Silbeg:
No I meant Eyes of the void... I have no Idea what went wrong with the post (I counted down the correct spells but wrote down the wrong one... (should not write a post after the time I nomaly go to sleep)

![]() |

Would it be possible to have 10 monute/level spells cast before combat?

![]() |

Sure, in that case I'll spend the 760 gp.

![]() |

Winter storm coming here this afternoon and evening, so I may be busy with that and/or having internet access trouble.
A few things before the next encounter gets underway.
1) If we can cast 10/minute level spells beforehand, I'd like Candi to cast see invisibility, certain grip, and keen edge off scrolls and ask Elric about stoneskin.
2) I'm thinking about trying the stinking cloud/goz mask combination versus the Big Bad here, since I'm 99.9% certain he'll have true seeing. Is that OK with everyone else?
3) Finally, I'm coming to accept that Donna may be more of a liability than asset in these intense, high level combats. Instead of having her come forward with Candi, I'll probably have her wait behind a large rock. I'm thinking of having Donna use her Elysium's call ability on Candi during the first round as it lasts for seven rounds. I'm guessing that Donna's share will ability probably works as long as she and Candi are within the one mile range of empathic link. There is no mention of range in the description of share will.

![]() |

ok, this might be a repost, but Paizo goblins are acting up
10 minute per level buffs are fine. Just post in the game play thread what you are casting.

![]() |

As for Donna... she can either be at risk of damage in the combat, or she can be out of the combat altogether. I am assuming you are leaving her completely out.
If she is out, she is under no risk.

If she is out, she is under no risk.
I'd like her to be on the map, starting with Candi but Donna won't move up when Candi does. So, Donna will be at risk of damage insofar as she is on the map, but she won't be all the way up in the very frontline.
Is this OK, or would you prefer that round 1, Donna casts Elysium's Call on Candi and then we remove her from the map for simplicity's sake?
