I’m taking the upcoming release of Sandpoint, Light of the Lost Coast as a sign that it’s finally time for me to run this iconic adventure. I’m looking for a party of five adventurers ready to rise from small-town adventurers to planet-saving heroes.
Now, the details:
Adventure Details
I will be running the Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition adventure path, as well as prominently featuring much of the content from the upcoming Sandpoint, Light of the Lost Coast campaign setting book. Rise of the Runelords leaves a lot of room for interacting with the people of Sandpoint and really immersing ourselves in the town, and I plan to play up that aspect of the adventure. James Jacobs has also promised adventure hooks for every location in Sandpoint, so players in this game should feel empowered to follow up on as many of those adventure hooks as they’d like!
Character Submission
Due to a couple of factors (the impending release of Sandpoint, Light of the Lost Coast and an upcoming vacation), I won’t be closing recruitment until Sunday, October 21 at 11:59pm EST. By that time, all submissions should include a completed version of each of the following:
- - Stat block built using the Character Creation rules (below)
- - 1-3 paragraphs on your character’s background (including your reason for being in Sandpoint)
- - 1 paragraph on your character’s look and personality
- - If you are aiming for a particular build that isn’t obvious from your 1st-level stat block, please call that out as well
After recruitment, I’ll likely follow up with the selected players on a few other things, but that’s good for now.
Character Creation
Character creation will follow creation rules for a new, 1st level Pathfinder Society character (20-point buy, 150gp starting gold, two traits, etc.) with the following exceptions:
- - Campaign Traits: 1 of your two traits should come from the Rise of the Runelords Player’s Guide.
- - Background Skills: We will be using the Background Skills alternate skills system.
- - Races: Core races only
Alternate Rules Systems
- - Background Skills: as mentioned above in character creation
- - Automatic Bonus Progression: we’ll be using the Automatic Bonus Progression system from Pathfinder Unchained, which removes +2 ability score belts and headbands, cloaks of resistance, rings of protection, amulets of natural armor, and +1-+5 weapons and armor from the game, but gives you the bonuses they usually provide as part of leveling up. This allows players to use their hard-earned gold on more interesting items!
- - Downtime: if the chosen players are interested, I’m open to using the Downtime rules from Ultimate Campaign to flesh out the downtime portions of the adventure. I think they’re kind of interesting, but I’ll only use them if players want to.
I think that’s all for now. If you have any major questions, try to get them in before the end of the day this Friday, since I won’t be regularly checking the thread after that until the deadline (though I’ll try to check in enough to answer other outstanding questions).
If you have a question that I don’t address before the deadline, choose your preferred answer to the question and submit a character - I will address it when I return and you can make any changes you have to make because of my answer after the deadline.
I hope that all makes sense, and I’m looking forward to a fun adventure!

To get my idea out there and prevent copyright infringement (not a thing, I know), I am fiddling with the idea of a witch cartomancer. Focus on touch debuffs from a distance and maybe a dash of healing if you are all nice to me.
Considering picking up the hedge witch archetype as well since they don't overlap. That would give more healing and some limited debuff removal.
Question for the GM. How do you feel about the feat tax fix?
I have played in a few games that use it and I really like it, but I am fine either way. Just figured it didn't hurt to ask.

Lekkric18 |

Definitely interested.
I'm going to put together a cleric with the Elder Mythos Cultist archetype. It would be great if I could re-flavour it to allowing a different god while keeping all other restrictions such as alignment (CN obviously) and domain. This is mostly because most worshippers of the Great Old Ones are frickin insane. If not I can still work with it, and it might be even more interesting to role play.
This guy will have come to town to spread worship of his god, with the intent of starting his own church (ie, cult) in His honour. I hope to use the downtime rules for this, but I haven't looked too closely at them yet so I have yet to figure out how it would work.
A quick look at the archetype will tell you that this guy isn't the greatest healer, but an Infernal Healing wand or two can cover after-combat healing and his plan for in-combat healing is to just kill the other guys quicker. Having charisma instead of wisdom as his primary stat for everything cleric-related means he'll be a pretty good face as well.

Grimtongue |

Posting for interest. On the one hand, I recently made a halfling Gloom chemist with a really fun backstory that I think would be interesting to play. On the other hand, inspired by Lekkric18, I had an idea for a party of non-evil elder god/Groetus cultists, just trying to convince people and get their God on equal footing with those more common deities worshipped at the Sandpoint Cathedral. I'll look through some options in that vein, and if anything jumps out at me, that may be what I post instead. I'd be curious to see if anyone else is on board with this party concept.
I like the idea of including downtime rules if I'm picked.
Shalm, when you say you want us to follow the guidelines for a PFS character, do you also mean only PFS approved archetypes? Or were you referring specifically to the starting wealth/point buy of the character?

Shalm |

Are you allowing firearms, and if so what availability?
Yes, firearms are allowed, and we'll be using the standard for Golarion, which is emerging guns.
How do you feel about the feat tax fix?
I've read it, and I think it's interesting, but I'm not going to allow it for this game. Appreciate you asking though.
What kind of posting rate are you looking for?
Generally speaking, daily on weekdays and hopefully once over the weekend. Things usually work more smoothly when we post more often when we're in combat, but I also totally understand that it's not always possible to check more than once a day.
It would be great if I could re-flavour it to allowing a different god while keeping all other restrictions such as alignment (CN obviously) and domain.
Do you have a god in mind? Groetus seems perfect (and has all the listed domains). In short, we can reflavor but let's decide together which god makes the most sense.
What do you feel regarding prior Knowledge?
With RotRL, there's bound to be some prior knowledge. Do your best to treat it as though your character doesn't have any of it, and I'm fine with it.
Shalm, when you say you want us to follow the guidelines for a PFS character, do you also mean only PFS approved archetypes? Or were you referring specifically to the starting wealth/point buy of the character?
I'd like to at least review any non-PFS-approved options, but I won't rule them out entirely.

Kapenia |

I'd like to at least review any non-PFS-approved options, but I won't rule them out entirely.
Here's one I'd like you to consider if possible. Kapenia is the Seducer witch archetype. I believe it was left out of PFS due to the potential issues of incorporating sexual elements with frequently changing groups, as the class doesn't seem overpowered and doesn't require evil acts.
I really just like it as a possibility of a CHA based witch, and plan on concentrating more on her worship of Calistria, moving her into the Evangelist prestige class as soon as possible.
I am more than happy to reskin the 8th level ability, or skip it altogether replacing it with a hex if you foresaw issues incorporating that.
Let me know, if you're ok with the concept I'll tweak her for this campaign. She was built to start in Sandpoint anyways for a Jade Regent run, so it won't take much to get her ready for this.
(please only look at the basic character concept. I'm well aware I'd need to change race, background, traits, etc. just would like to know if the archetype would be allowed before completely reskinning her)

Shalm |

Can drawbacks be taken for an additional trait?
No drawbacks for this campaign, sorry!
Here's one I'd like you to consider if possible. Kapenia is the Seducer witch archetype. I believe it was left out of PFS due to the potential issues of incorporating sexual elements with frequently changing groups, as the class doesn't seem overpowered and doesn't require evil acts.
I'm not wild about it, honestly. It doesn't make me uncomfortable, persay, but I also don't want to be the person who decides for a full group of five (or four others) that sex (or sexual elements at least) is going to be a significant part of our game. That's something that should come up organically, and with the blessing of the whole group. Choosing a character with this archetype would be making that choice for everyone. So unfortunately, I'm going to have to say no to the Seducer.

Ouachitonian |

Given ABP, how do you deal with classes/archetypes that include a scaling magic weapon as a feature? The first example that comes to mind is the Jistkan Artificer Magus, which includes the following:
Empowered Arm (Ex): At 3rd level, a Jistkan artificer’s golem arm is treated as a magic weapon and gains a +1 enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls. This bonus increases by 1 at 7th level and every 4 levels thereafter, to a total bonus of +5 at 19th level. This replaces the magus arcana gained at 3rd level.
In this particular case, it might be simple enough to just give the character back it’s 3rd level Magus Arcana and let the arm use ABP scaling, but other cases might be harder to handle.

Grimtongue |

I'd like to at least review any non-PFS-approved options, but I won't rule them out entirely.
Of course! And thank you for the quick response. I'm as far from a powergamer as you can get - pretty much anyone who's played with me could attest - so I'm not looking for an edge. I just want to make sure I know which character options are at least on the table. :)

Shalm |

Given ABP, how do you deal with classes/archetypes that include a scaling magic weapon as a feature?
I think I would allow the character to choose a weapon enhancement valued at +1 (flaming, frost, shock, etc.). Then, when they would normally gain a +2 weapon, they could either choose a second +1 enhancement or replace the +1 enhancement with a +2 enhancement. But in the particular case you called out, I would also give the option to just gain a Magus Arcana at 3rd level as well.
Magus is obviously an interesting case when using ABP, so I'd be willing to work with anyone who wants to create a magus to figure out the best way to handle it.

Nairb the Grey |

Question - I have been perusing the PFSRD looking at traits and I just came across Well Provisioned Adventurer
Is this trait allowed? I know generally wealth increasing traits are frowned upon...and this seems to give a lot starting off for a trait so I thought I would ask before I got to excited about it.

Shalm |

Regarding ABP and Magus, unless I'm missing something its only the bladebound archetype that seems problematical. Regular Magus should work normally right?
Yes, I suppose it works normally (since ABP is supposed to simulate around when someone would normally get a magical weapon anyone).
Is this trait allowed?
Looks like a little too much, I think, so I'm going to say no. I like the concept, but this seems a little too good.

Lekkric18 |

Do you have a god in mind? Groetus seems perfect (and has all the listed domains). In short, we can reflavor but let's decide together which god makes the most sense.
Groetus would be great. Grimtongue's idea of a party of Groetus followers who are trying to get Groetus to be recognized as equal to the more popular gods would be an interesting twist on things, but I would understand if not everyone were up for that since it kind of narrows your own characters' backstories. Maybe a few of us were in that group and we join the others in Sandpoint out of convenience and not because they're particularly interested in meddling in the gods' business.
Mechanically I'll be an offensive cleric with my Heavy Flail (yay Groetus!) and tons of buffs/debuffs. The Madness domain looks pretty damn good for an offensive cleric so I'll go with that. An Elder Mythos Cultist of Groetus into the Evangelist prestige class.
It'll be fun to RP a seemingly normal but slightly-insane-under-the-surface cleric building a cult to worship his mad god. :)

Long-time lurker, dotting for interest! I played in a lot of PbP games a few years back, and I'd love to get in on a RotRL game.
I have an idea for a wizard-y type that I've been itching to play - I'll get the skeleton of a character description and stat block up tomorrow, if you're still accepting potential players.

TClegg1024 |

I have to ask, would you allow this as a custom trait?
Chakram Fighter
(Combat)
You have put in additional training with the Chakram in order to understand how to wield it efficiently in melee.
You are always considered to be wearing Heavy Armor for the purposes of the Reflex save to avoid damage when wielding the Chakram in melee.

All right then :) I have a swashbuckling magus concept that I think would be fun for RoTRL I'll work up a backstory.

Submitting Veryan Threnott, half-elven ranger
Veryan was raised on the outskirts of Sandpoint by Selas Threnott, who was one of his mother's best friends and comrades-in-arms. Selas is a ranger, and taught Veryan the ways of nature in a roundabout way. While he did teach the boy to protect himself, he focused more on the other things rangers can do to aid people... tracking, guiding, gathering medicinal herbs and plants, and providing aid to sick or injured people and animals.
In combat training, he focused mostly on the staff, the dagger, and the bow, since staves can be easily found or made in a pinch, and all of these weapons can serve more than one purpose. Once Veryan reached his tenth summer, he helped the boy advertise his services as a guide to people in and around Sandpoint, earning his coin and providing a small bit of it to Selas for food and supplies, thus learning to work hard and respect the value of coin.
Over time, the boy grew curious about his parents, and Selas told him the truth. His mother, Maira Algwyn, was a ranger in service to the Lord-Mayor of Magnimar. She, Selas, and a handful of other scouts, patrolled the Sanos Forest, the Ashwood, and the Churlwood, and often guided people from Magnimar to Kaer Maga through the forests. On one such trip, they encountered a band of goblins in the Ashwood, who attacked. They were outnumbered, and while they used their bows to great advantage, it looked like they would be overrun.
Seemingly out of nowhere, a patrol of elves materialized out of the trees and hit the goblins in their left flank. The humans pressed them from the front, and the goblins routed. While Selas and others cared for the wounded and dead, Maira went to thank the leader of the elven group, Aethelinan, for their aid. He was standoffish, and commented that the humans perhaps did not belong in the forest if they were going to be caught unawares by the likes of goblins. While he was on his tirade, Maira saw movement out of the corner of her eye, and shoved Aethelinan aside just before a not-quite-dead goblin stuck a dagger in his back. She killed the goblin, and turned to Aethelinan, one eyebrow raised. He thanked her, apologized for his earlier comment, and they went their separate ways.
But it seems they did not forget each other. During another patrol, they ran into the elven band again, as it turned out that they were looking for a place to establish another village, outside of the Mierani Forest to the northwest. The elves and humans decided to share camp for the night, and Maira and Aethelinan spent the entire evening talking, seemingly enraptured by each other. Later, the two went for a walk in the woods, and... Veryan was conceived.
They did not see the elves again for some time, but it was not long before Maira realized she was pregnant. She confided in Selas, and when the time came that she was too far along to risk patrolling, she took leave, asking that Selas get word to Aethelinan if he saw him, or any of the other elves. A few months went by, and Maira grew closer to delivery. After a fortnight's patrol, wherein Selas took a serious leg wound in a skirmish with bandits headed for Riddleport, he returned to Magnimar. He had just reported in, and was on his way to a healer, since he could no longer walk without aid, when one of the other scouts, Jarth, ran up to him, telling him that he was needed in Maira's home, right away. Two of his mates helped him make his way to the small house she shared with a dressmaker named Alahna, and was greeted at the door by Alahna, and an acolyte of Sarenrae whose name he did not know. They were both bloody, and he heard the sound of a squealing baby from inside. From the looks on their faces, something was wrong. Alahna explained that there had been a complication with the birth, and that the healer and the acolyte, working together, had not been able to save Maira.
Her last request was for Selas to either find Aethelinan and give the baby boy, who she'd named Veryan, over to him, or to raise the boy himself. He agreed to look after the baby, with help from a nursemaid arranged by the Church of Sarenrae, to which Maira had belonged, while he recovered from his injury. From there, they would either find the boy's father, or figure out what else to do.
Selas soon found out that his injury was going to leave him with a permanent, if slight, limp, and so retired from duty with a pension, buying a small cottage on the outskirts of Sandpoint. He supplemented his pension by working as a guide, a tracker, and a hunter, selling meat, skins, and bones, and looking after locals while they went gathering herbs. While Veryan was a baby, Selas would leave him with friends he knew from the Church of Sarenrae, or his own preference, the local grange of Erastil. As soon as the boy was old enough to tag along safely, Selas would bring him along on his trips, already beginning to teach him to live in the wider world.
It was during Veryan's thirteenth summer when they encountered a patrol of elves while hunting in the Sanos Forest. Selas introduced himself and explained the story. The elves took a look at the boy, whose heritage was obvious from his willowy limbs and the slight points on his ears, and told Selas to bring him back to that spot in three days time. When they arrived, three days later, Aethelinan was there, with two other elves. He stepped forward and greeted Selas, looking not a day older than he had thirteen years before, and looked at his son. The boy, urged on by Selas, stepped forward and introduced himself as Veryan Threnott, son of Selas Threnott, and extended his hand. Aethelinan shook, and the three sat to talk, while the other elves stood watch nearby.
It was decided that Veryan would go with Aethelinan, back to the Mierani Forest, and spend a year with his elven family. While he was not fond of the idea of leaving Selas, they agreed to meet in the same spot in the woods once a month. And so it went, with Veryan learning about the elven side of his heritage, and improving upon his archery and swordplay skills, learning the elven tongue, and getting to know this world that was foreign to him. He was taught much about ogres, and how to hunt them, as they were a near-constant thorn in the side of the elves. Each month when he met Selas, he would fill him in on all of the things he'd been doing, and at the end of the year, Veryan returned to live with the man he considered to be his true father. When he parted from Aethelinan, he told him he would visit again in the future, and Aethelinan told him he would always be welcome.
As Selas got older, Veryan took on more and more of the work, acting as a guide, tracker, and trapper, but never signing on to the militia as his mother and Selas had. It is here that we find him now... trained as a novice ranger, but with no real battle experience, ready to play his part in the events coming to Sandpoint.

I have a question about the Guided Hand feat.
Since my archetype uses charisma instead of wisdom for everything (including non cleric-specific things like Will saves), can I use charisma instead of wisdom for this feat as well?

TClegg1024 |

I present Talil Kosh, pilgrim from Vudra..
Step 1: Write 5 background and concept elements that you feel are important to your image of the character.
1) Son of a Vudrani mother and a Varisian father, Talil was educated in a Vudran monastery where his mother taught about diplomacy and philisophy.
2) At an early age, due to his mothers stories about Varisia, Talil began studying the region. It's history, it's geography, etc. He became fascinated with the ancient Thassilonian empire.
3) He took a vow at an early age to honor Irori and become the best he could with the Chakram, a weapon that depends on much style and subtle expertise to master it.
4) TBD
5) TBD
Step 2: List at least two goals for the character.
1) Meet his father.
2) Become master of the Chakram and establish a school devoted to the use of the weapon.
Step 3: List at least two secrets about your character. One is a secret the character knows, one is a secret that involves him but that he is not actually aware of yet.
1) His mother has declined to tell Talil the name of his father, however from his reading of the correspondence he has reasoned that Ethram Valdemar is that individual.
2) He is unaware that his half-brother Kaleb knows of his father's affair and harbours resentment for it. Kaleb suspects that his father convinced Talil's mother to leave and return to Vudra. How that resentment plays out will be seen once Talil meets Ethram and reveals his identity.
Step 4: Describe at least three people that are tied to the character. Two of them are friendly to the character, one is hostile.
1)
2)
3)
Step 5: Describe three memories, mannerisms, or quirks that your character has. They don't have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor.
1) His mother's singing inspired him to learn. He has a tendency to sing in Vudrani to himself or softly under his breath when nervous in an attempt to remain calm.
2)
3)

Hello, I like what I see so far. I really enjoy Rise of the Runelords and seeing you add more in will be really interesting.
I'm considering playing a ranger.
I had two questions - How would ABP would for an animal companion? Would they get it? If not would it be impossible to get them belts and such right?
I saw you talk about feat fixes was that Tax free feats? Just wondering as I only just discovered these and wanted to know if there was another system people were using too.

Shalm |

It'll be fun to RP a seemingly normal but slightly-insane-under-the-surface cleric building a cult to worship his mad god. :)
I should be more clear about what I said above about not being sold on the cult of Groetus. I love the idea that you're playing with here, I think it's super interesting. I was referring to having a party full of Groetus worshipers when I said I wasn't sold.
I have an idea for a wizard-y type that I've been itching to play - I'll get the skeleton of a character description and stat block up tomorrow, if you're still accepting potential players.
Welcome! Yes, I'm accepting submissions until Sunday, October 21 at 11:59pm. Take a look at my first post for all the details.
How do you feel about an unchained rogue?
I like it much better than the original rogue - I think all the unchained classes are improvements, for various reasons.
I have to ask, would you allow this as a custom trait?
Sure, that seems reasonable. You still take the -1 penalty to attack rolls, though (which is reflected in your stat block).
Since my archetype uses charisma instead of wisdom for everything (including non cleric-specific things like Will saves), can I use charisma instead of wisdom for this feat as well?
Yes.
How would ABP would for an animal companion?
Yes, animal companions would get it as well (based on class level).

Shalm |

How do you feel about a vigilante character? And would it be alright to use a campaign trait from Shadows Under Sandpoint such as Favored Son/Daughter? They are mentioned in the players guide but still wanted to run check in first.
Very interested in what you'd do with a vigilante - so yes, definitely go for it. And the Shadows Under Sandpoint traits are fine as well.

TheDopplerEffect |

Sweet! Thanks!
The concept started as a joke, about an Etiquette Instructor that moonlights as an adventurer/champion of the people, but I've fallen in love with the idea and it may not seem that silly in a place like Sandpoint...if I do it properly.
