Regarding arming the children
"A sword's just a piece of metal. It's as good or bad as the arm swinging it. A stout heart deserves protection and an evil one will find trouble regardless."
At Eel's End
Tessa tries hard to be nondescript, shuffling her feet as negotiations are underway.
Mamma said not to get mixed up with this kind of bunch, she thinks. I best look out sharp!

Perception Checks
Tessa notices two additional guards near the Eel's End ship. Six also patrol the pier and the decks of the five ships, and two stand guard where the pier meets the shore. None of the guards seem to be concealing themselves and she does not notice any others watching the group.
Eel's End
The guard nods at Bosch's suggestion. "Well Devargo always has time for business. I think they're eating dinner now. Go ahead." He opens the door that leads into the ship's aft cabin and steps aside.
This large room, once a captain’s cabin, has been converted into a throne room of sorts. The walls are thick with spiderwebs, in which scuttle dozens of spiders— some as large as a fist but most considerably smaller. The room is furnished with two sturdy oaken tables surrounded by chairs. Both tables seat three scruffy men scraping their dinner plates clean. Aft, a wooden stage supports a large leather chair where Devargo Barvasi is seated. The chair itself covered with cobwebs and scampering spiders. A narrow door stands to port, hanging ajar and revealing a flight of stairs leading below. An iron birdcage hangs from the ceiling like a chandelier, inside of which lingers a tiny, tired-looking purple dragon.
As you enter the room, Devargo stands up to greet you. He is a tall man with close-cropped black hair, a warm smile, and blue eyes. He accents his black leather armor with a steel spider-shaped shoulder baldric and a thick chain criss-crossing his chest, linked together in the shape of a spider’s web. "Welcome to Eel's End, friends! My apologies, we are just finishing our supper. Please, make yourselves comfortable." He gestures to the chairs around the tables.

Bosch Glasthane |

"Ah, thank you for the hospitality. Surprisingly rare in this city, especially during troubled times. You mind if my dog joins us?" Bosch said, a simple hand command kept Roscoe by the door as his master moved to the table and took a seat.
Diplomacy to improve Attitude: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

Corwin Avelard |

Corwin makes his way into the room, and takes a seat at the table.
Why Bosch, my good man, you have a way about you...quite amazing. he smiles inwardly and waits to see how Bosch handles the Spider.

DM medlii |
"Of course the dog may join us. I have my pets, you are welcome to yours." Devargo smiles as a mouse-sized spider clambers over him. "Eel's End is famed for its hospitality. I strive to help my dear clients escape the harshness of reality. And right now, I am evaluating these fine young gentlemen who desire to be part of such a venture." Devargo gestures to the six men sitting at the tables, who have been nodding earnestly at every word he says. "But I don't think you are here for any of the pleasures Eel's End offers or for a job interview today. If that's the case, what can I do for you?"

Bosch Glasthane |

"Roscoe," Bosch murmured and the beast came to sit at his master's side. The dog eyed the spiders warily but was otherwise on his best behavior.
"Very astute Mr. Barvassi. My name is Bosch Glasthane, I am a concerned citizen and businessman. It has recently come to my attentions that you might be doing business that might negatively impact mine. Rather than be uncouth about the whole matter, I figured that I could approach you and we could work something out." Here Bosch paused for effect, rallying his thoughts.
"It has come to my attention, through various channels, that Ambassador Darvayne Amprei has approached you on several occasions."

DM medlii |
Devargo smiles and leans back in his 'throne.' "Why yes, Ambassador Amprei is one of my best clients. If it's information you're interested in, I may know something of a delicate matter that involves the ambassador. As a businessman, I'm sure you are aware that information about such a subject is a commodity... If it's a business deal you're interested in, I'm sure you could find some way to make it worth my time."

Bosch Glasthane |

"You'll have to forgive me, but this is my first time engaging in such affairs. Since you seem so ready to sell such information, what is your asking price?"

Typhon B'Ru |

Hmm posted in between Bosch and DM, but it...went away, apparently...??? oh well here we go
Ty will walk in and sit down with his back to the wall, spinning the chair around first to sit in it backwards.
"Evenin' 'gents." He'll say with a nod to Devargo and the others.
He will then sit quietly and watch the conversation, between Devargo and Bosch. Keeping a watchful eye on the room.

DM medlii |
"Yes, you could say I am always looking for new business opportunities. For one thousand gold pieces, I could give you information as well as some evidence about the Ambassador's... affairs, shall we say." A spider scuttles over Devargo as he speaks, but the man doesn't seem to notice it.

DM medlii |
"You want to buy Majenko?" Devargo sounds shocked. "Why my friend Markus just gave me the pseudodragon as a gift. I would miss Majenko's company. But for you, I will sell him for the bargain price of 5,000 gold pieces." The pseudodragon growls at Devargo, who only laughs.

Tessa Alee |

"5000 gold?" Do you take me for a simpleton? I know full well the street price for one of them's just a couple hundred. Unless he poops gold nuggets he ain't worth a fifth of what you ask. I can go 600 gold. Triple street price, 'cause he's a cutie. Pretty good markup, I'd say."

DM medlii |
Just gonna break these into two sections since Tessa trying to get the pseudodragon does not affect gathering information about Ambassador Amprei.
Negotations
-
Pseudodragon
Devargo laughs at Tessa's assessment. "Like I said, I would miss Majenko's company. But I think 600 gold will do if you provide me with a bit of entertainment first. Have you ever heard of the game Knivesies, my lady?" Devargo asks Tessa.
He explains the rules of the simple but dangerous games. Two contestants (Tessa and one of Devargo's goons) stand at opposite ends of a table with their right hands strapped together. Each has one free hand and an empty pouch. A dagger is stuck into the tabletop between the two and anyone can place bets by tossing coins onto the table. The winner either wins by collecting the most gold pieces or by forcing the other player off of the table. Those are the only rules.
Tessa, if you agree to the game of knivesies, roll for initiative.
There are two ways to win Knivesies. You can either force the other contestant to fall off the table, or you can grab for the gold and drop it into your pouch. Snatching a fistful of 1d10 coins off the table is a standard action that provokes an attack of opportunity. Since each opponent has only one free hand, the first round is typically a mad lunge for the dagger, forcing the slower opponent to make grabs for gold. There aren’t any more rules beyond this; most Knivesies games devolve into tabletop brawls, with the first person to drop or touch the ground losing.
The game ends once a contestant is unconscious, dead, or knocked off the table; as soon as no coins remain on the table; or as soon as any coin is knocked off the table. When the game ends, an unconscious, dead, or de-tabled contestant is automatically the loser. Otherwise, the winner is determined by which person has the most coins in his pouch. At the end of the game, all money is emptied from the pouches back onto the
table. Half the total is paid to the winner, while the remainder is split evenly among all of those who stood at the winner’s end of the table.

Tessa Alee |

Shouldn't there be a betting period before the fight begins?
Whelp, you're in it neck deep now!
"Sure. And when I beat the tar out of your goon there I'll pay you my winnings for the little dragon! You don't care if I play rough, right?"
Tessa smirks and hops onto the table, awaiting her challenger.

DM medlii |
Whoops, yep, everyone has until tomorrow to bet on the fight before it starts. Thanks Tessa.
Pseudodragon
Parns' eyes go wide and he stutters "M-me? Uh okay, boss!" Eying Tessa warily, he tosses several daggers to the floor and nimbly leaps onto the table. With a leather belt, Devargo lashes Tessa and Parns' right arms together.
"Place your bets, ladies and gentlemen!" Devargo announces, wedging a knife into the center of the table. He tosses ten gold pieces onto the table and stands at the end nearest Parns. The other five thugs gather around Devargo. Each tosses a gold piece onto the table, clamoring for the game to start.
The pseudodragon perks up and cranes his long neck to watch.
There are now 15 gold pieces on the table.
[ooc]When we start, Tessa and Parns will roll for initiative. Whoever wins goes first. Typical actions are to grab the knife; grab 1d10 gold pieces, which provokes an attack of opportunity; or try and knock the opponent off of the table with a combat maneuver.

Typhon B'Ru |

Pseudodragon
With a wink to Tessa he whispers"Give 'em hell little one."
Then he will cross his arms and stand off to one side.
Hope she has a plan, that guy is twitchy, and probably more dangerous than he looks. this could get ugly.
He stands, a little tense as if ready for action.
Negotiations
Before betting on Tessa Ty will get up and walk over to Bosch and whisper something in his ear.
"Don' really have anything to say Boss, just tryin' to make it look good. Tho I'm not sure how much I would negotiate with this guy. He seems slightly unstable if ya know what I mean."

Bosch Glasthane |

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
"What assurance do I have that this information is worthwhile?" Bosch said with an easy smile. He was a small time businessman, bartering was his bread and butter.
"I'd say four hundred gold. Generous for a man I've never done business with." He had no doubt that Devargo was as skilled a barterer as he was, it was not uncommon to severely undercut the offered price in order to get a sense of how low the other person was willing to go. Bosch was willing to go higher but wanted to feel out Devargo's limits.
Pseudodragon
Before the fight starts, Bosch claps a hand on Tessa's shoulder and asks, "Are you sure about this Tessa?" He asks, even as he tosses fifteen gold onto the table as well, confidently matching Devargo's bet.
"Say the word and I will happily take your place."
Should be 40 gp on the table right now.

Bandru walks in and puts 20 gold on the table and me to stand behind the gnome.

"800 gold and we have a deal. I have two documents that will cause considerable trouble for the Ambassador in the right hands. He's been corresponding with someone he shouldn't be, and if just about anybody found out, the Chelish Ambassador would lose his job, his political connections, and possibly his head. These two letters have the Ambassador's signature alongside very detailed accounts of his affairs."
"Ambassador Amprei has been delighted to purchase other evidence I've come across from me, and I do like seeing him come crawling in to Eel's End."
Bosch gets the sense that Devargo is being truthful, and he is enjoying teasing Bosch with tidbits of information without sharing the whole story. He also gets the feeling that Devargo does not like Amprei for whatever reason.
Pseudodragon
Parns' initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
After everyone has tossed their bets onto the table, Devargo counts down from ten to start the game. Tessa is much quicker than Parns. Before he can react, she blasts him in the face with fire instead of grabbing for the dagger or coins. Parns flops to the table, smoking and severely burned. Fortunately, Tessa also managed to burn away the leather strap binding the two together and is not dragged down with him.
Devargo is laughing heartily at all this. "Oh, I never... I never expected that. That little tiny gnome, tied up, shooting fire everywhere," he manages to gasp as he laughs. "Now THAT sort of entertainment is priceless!"
Two of the thugs inspect their fallen comrade. Parns seems to be unconscious, not dead. Two others wrangle the pseudodragon cage down from the ceiling.
Still chuckling, Devargo gives the pseudodragon and the sixty gold from the bets to Tessa.

Tessa Alee |

Tessa winks at Devargo as she collects her winnings and hands over the agreed payment of 600 gold.
"you should know, sometimes a tiny spider packs the deadliest bite."
She returns to her seat to let the negotiations continue, and whispers to the pseudodragon:

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
"Think of the Ambassador's face when he finds out someone has them, he'll sweat like a pig on the way to the butcher's," Bosch said with a grin. "That alone has got to be worth at least a hundred gold. I say 600." Even now, Bosch was not expecting Devargo to take the 600, he was aiming for 700 gold and had to wonder just how perceptive his foes was.

"Seven hundred and they're yours," Devargo says to Bosch. "The Ambassador would pay me three hundred for each letter, plus I would get to hear him beg. So 700 from you sounds fair." Devargo clearly seems to be enjoying haggling.
Pseudodragon
The man that Tessa burned is unconscious but not dead. The lackeys that are conscious are a bit wary of Tessa - they are watching her and staying back from her, as if she might suddenly burst into flames. Noticing this, Devargo smirks. "Any of you still interested? Working for me isn't all fun and games." Two of the men stammer excuses and leave.
The pseudodragon chirps excitedly as the cage is handed to Tessa.
It replies to Tessa, seeming somewhat surprised to be spoken to in draconic. "You saved me! Thank you friend! I am Majenko and I will serve you for one year for freeing me from this bad place."

Bandru Varz |

Bandru laughs as Tessa dispatches of the man quickly.

Tessa Alee |

Tessa grumbles slightly at being asked to heal the ruffian. "Were it me on the ground, I expect he'd finish me with a knife, not call for a healer."
She moves to the injured man and lets soothing heat flow from her hands to his charred face.

Well, if he gets back on the straight and narrow maybe he's worth the healing.

"You're forcing my hand,"Bosch said in a bald-faced lie, "But seven hundred it is." Saving three hundred was nothing to scoff at so Bosch counted out the coins for Devargo and approached his throne with them in hand.

"But you're not the one on the ground," Bosch said, not bothering to elaborate on the statement anymore.

" Better you than I Bosch. I am terrible at haggling."

As Bosch hands him the money, Devargo claps his hands in delight. "Thank you for your generosity and entertainment. Please wait just a moment while I gather the evidence." Devargo whistles and two guards, dressed like the one who had been watching the door, enter the room. Devargo exits down the stairway to the deck below.
.
Devargo returns a few minutes later holding an envelope. He confides "I learned of a scandalous affair Ambassador Amprei's having with the wife of an important noble in Cheliax. Apparently, the ambassador and this woman have been corresponding while Amprei has been stationed here in Korvosa. I acquired these letters when I visited the ambassador a few weeks ago and have been selling them back to him ever since. Frankly, I'm surprised he hasn't gone to the guard to snitch on me yet. That says plenty about how dangerous the contents would be to his career."
Devargo hands the envelope, which contains two letters, to Bosch. "Pleasure doing business with you," he says, grinning wickedly.
Pseudodragon
After Tessa pokes him a few times, Parns wakes up. Seeing the gnome standing over him and waving her hands, he freezes. As she scolds him, he stutters "Y-yes, my lady. Please don't kill me!" and flees from the room.

Bosch Glasthane |

Bringing the two together
"Indeed," Bosch said, "...and if you so choose, I'll let you have the pleasure of letting him know I have them. The look on his face should be well worth it. Feed him whatever story you wish, or tell him the truth," Bosch said with his own smile as he skimmed over the letters and tucked them into his breastplate.
"Also, on a personal note, if you have any information on one Shadak Strifeminer's operations in town I'd be happy to reimburse you for it at a later date. Right now, my companions and I have other matters to attend to."

Tessa Alee |

As the party leaves Eel's End, Tessa opens Majenko's cage and lets him out. She carelessly discards the cage on the ground and speaks to him in Draconic.
Tessa returns the 10 gold to Typhon, 20 to Bandru, and 15 to Bosch.
"Thanks for the vote of confidence back there, guys. If we split the winnings the usual way you'd get 10 gold back each, I figure it's better to just give you your bets back. I got what I wanted - freedom for this little guy."
Tessa scratches Majenko on the head. "You must be hungry, we should get you something to eat!"

Typhon B'Ru |

Ty makes sure he is the last one out of the Eel's End. Gives a nod to the guards and walks away.

I'm assuming you guys go to see Cressida with your findings the next day, speak up if you’d rather do otherwise
Field Marshall Kroft is at her desk, looking quite exhausted. This time, a young man wearing the white and gold robes of a follower of Abadar is standing over her, speaking arcane words. As he finishes his spell, Cressida looks more awake and alert. ”Thank you Ishani, you may go now.” He leaves, murmuring a greeting to you as he goes.
She looks happy to see you. ”Did you find anything of interest regarding the Ambassador?”
Abadar is the lawful neutral god of civilization and law. Many Korvosans worship him. His grand cathedral in Korvosa doubles as the city’s bank. The clerics of Abadar also collect Korvosa’s taxes and serve as judges and similar roles in the government. Abadar’ symbol is a golden key.

Field Marshall Kroft
She listens closely as Corwin and Typhon recount the story. Taking the letters from the envelope, she reads them and blushes. ”My... that is certainly some... evidence,” she says, stuffing them back into the envelope.
”I was planning to give these to one of our diplomats, who might use the letters to subtly pressure Ambassador Amprei. If you'd like to speak with the ambassador yourself, I could try to arrange a meeting - he would probably rebuff attempts you make to meet with him," she says, placing the letters back onto her desk near Bosch, giving him the option of taking or leaving them.
”Keep whatever is left of the funds I gave you for this mission, as well as this, for your services to the city.” Cressida gives Corwin a pouch containing 500 gold. I believe you also had 300g left after the bribes.
”Thanks to you bringing back two of my sergeants. With Grau and Verik on duty, I was able to have two more men patrolling the streets. The situation has definitely calmed down today. At the moment, I don’t have any additional missions for you, but I will be in touch if something comes up. What is the best way for me to reach one of you?”
You guys will have about a week of ingame time before something pops up in game. In the meantime, a few other events will play out - King Eodred's funeral, Queen Ileosa's coronation, and some investigation into what Hookshanks is guilty of(the gnome you arrested at Lamm's place). And if you'd like to play anything else out, we will do that too (visiting Ambassador Amprei, hanging out at Orisini's fighting academy, whatever else you come up with) So we will play these out over the next few days of real-life time before moving on with the main plot.

Bosch Glasthane |

"Well, I'm sure they'd have better luck than a simple smith," Bosch said, happily parting with the letters, "I was under the incorrect assumption that this was being played closer to the breast." He reached down to pet Roscoe but since the dog's head came up to his chest, he did not have to reach very far.
"We'll likely all be at the Fishery. If this relationship is to continue, we may as well be easy to reach," He gave the Marshal a smile, "Thank you, Cressida," Bosch said as he turned to go.
Outside...
"My friends," he said to the others, "I have much to thank you for."

"Really, I am not sure what your thankin' us for, you did a big chunk of the work. I've seen more gold in these last few weeks than ever before in my life. so maybe I should be thanking you."
Ty says as he nods earnestly in Bosch's direction.

Field Marshall Kroft
King Eodred’s Funeral
Today is the day of King Eodred Arabasti II’s funeral. His body has has laid in state for a day beforehand at the Grand Cathedral of Abadar for any mourners to visit and pay their respects. Various magics have been used to preserve his body where it lays in a coffin, draped with Korvosa’s red, black and silver flag. Korvosan heraldry - a hippogryph and trout above the slogan “TROSKER EP STYRK” (fidelity and strength) is featured throughout the display; and red and white flowers fill every available surface.
On the morning of the funeral, the cathedral bells begin to ring, marking the start of the funeral procession. Six guards, their traditional red plumes replaced with black, carry the coffin to a waiting carriage. It proceeds through Korvosa’s streets with a long train of important mourners accompanying it. Queen Ileosa and her bodyguard, Sabina, ride in the carriage directly behind it. Six other carriages of Korvosa’s noble houses follow. Sabina spends the carriage ride through the city watching the crowd carefully for threats.
The regalia decorating the other carriages include that of the Arkonas, the Jeggare family (an important and historied Chelish family for whom the Jeggare River is named); House Leroung, House Ornelas, and House Zenderholm.
The procession halts in High Market Square, where a podium is erected. Syl Gar, Magistrate of Expenditures, ascends the stage for a speech. ”My fellow Korvosans, I am saddened by King Eodred’ death. I would like to dedicate this site as Eodred’s Square, so we may rememer the prosperity he brought to Korvosa during his life.” There is a smattering of applause from the citizens lining the funeral procession’s route.
.
After winding through the majority of Korvosa, the procession stops in the Gray District. Various city leaders and other Korvosans of import give speeches about the wonders that King Eodred did for Korvosa during his lifetime. In actuality, Eodred was a stingy man when it came to welfare and public works projects, but he did greatly improve Korvosa’s trade and mercantile opportunities across Avistan, indirectly improving life for many Korvosans by providing jobs and bringing lower cost items to Korvosa’s markets. He also constructed the Pantheon of Many, where all gods can be worshiped as well as four orphanages.
Queen Ileosa concludes the ceremony with an unusual proclamation. ”King Eodred, my dear beloved husband, may be gone, but he is not forgotten. His death will not go unpunished. Even now, we are ferreting out clues, clues of who committed such a treasonous crime against all of Korvosa! When they are found, they will be brought to justice. Only then will King Eodred Arabasti II be able to rest in peace!” The crowd roars with approval as several priests of Pharasma, dressed in hooded black robes trimmed with silver approach the coffin. They are led by Bishop D'bear, a woman in black robes with much more silver adornment. Together, they carry Eodred’s coffin into the catacombs below.
Hookshanks' Trial
I'll post the coronation ceremony tomorrow as well as the things you guys have requested to do.
Arbiter Zenobia Zenderholm will be visiting Citadel Volshynek tomorrow morning to interview Hookshanks Grueller, the gnome you captured at Gaedren Lamm's residence. Should you or your children like to provide additional testimony, please arrive promptly three hours after sunrise.
Sincerely,
Field Marshall Cressida Kroft
Korvosan citizens might know the basics of Korvosa's legal system. An arbiter sanctioned by the Church of Abadar questions witnesses and questions those to be judged, along with any witnesses. Then, depending on the gravity of the case, a number of arbiters judge it and decide the appropriate punishment. It is typical for only one arbiter to judge most cases. However, in more unusual circumstances, three, five, or even seven arbiters may be present.

Corwin Avelard |

If Typhon is going to the coronation and funeral, Corwin and Wren will accompany him. It isn't like these events happen all that often, so it will be good for Wren to see them...and Corwin likes a bit of pomp and circumstance every once in a while too. lol
"As Bosch says, I will be at the Fishery. We are attempting to transform it into something a bit more reputable than its former utilization. I am glad that we are able to be of some small service. As an aside, I am starting my school once more. If you or your comrades know of likely children who need instruction, please contact me, and we can discuss their schooling. Good day Field Marshall." Corwin says as he follows Bosch and the others out of the room.
So Corwin is going to go to the events. He is also going to contact old acquaintances and let them know that he is back in the education business. Nothing as tawdry as slapping up advertisements, but just putting the word on the street.

Bosch will attend all three, bringing Bee to the coronation and funeral as well. I'll get some posts up once I've handled my crafting checks.

Typhon
Bosch pauses as he catches the tail end of Typhon's question for the Marshal.
"Looking for some new clothes?" Bosch said with a knowing look, "Bee and I need some too, I'll go with you and make sure those tailors don't turn you into a peacock."

Sundry Days
On the second day of this there was a torrent of cussing from the workshop and the sound of something flying out over the water and splashing into it with a hellish hissing sound. Both Bee and the other apprentice were away from the forge when this happened.
He resumed his work the next day, returning to that same intensity and soon he stepped from the heat of the forge to plunge his masterpiece into a trough of specially prepared oil. When the blade struck the surface of the oil, the entire surface of the trough lit with fire, boiling and spitting. Bosch pulled the flaming sword from the oil and wrapped it in a hefty blanket, smothering the flames. When he pulled the finished blade from the blanket, Bee and the apprentice let out screams of joy. He smothered out the flames on the trough as well and spent the rest of the day quietly sharpening and cleaning his new sword in the smithy.
On the morrow, he went back out and returned with another completed project. This one was much smaller than his previous one. Both weapons were kept stowed out of sight until they were needed.

Tessa Alee |

Tessa spends the week fixing up the fishery and getting to know Majenko. She rigs up a fishing pole on the dock next to a pile of baitfish, and shows him how to bait the hook. She trails the line in the water near the surface, so every time there's a hit Majenko can pounce on the fish and then reset the line.
As Tessa hangs out with her new friend, she gets to work adding a new tattoo to her collection. Next to the traditional whorls and patterns of the Varisians, she begins inking the outline of a pseudodragon...
