Zeitgeist: The Gears of Revolution

Game Master Celeador

Times are turning. The skyseers – Risur’s folk prophets since their homeland’s birth – witness omens in the starry wheels of heaven, and they warn that a new age is nigh. But what they cannot foresee, hidden beyond the steam and soot of the night sky, is the face of this coming era, the spirit of the age. The zeitgeist."

Human (Risuri) Gunslinger AC 16/14/12 / HP 11 / F +3 R +5 W +2 / Init. +3 / Perc. +6 / Sense Motive +2

I guess I should have checked the forum this weekend. I will be posting my action tonight.

Thanks Ian! Filby, what do you think of the Investigator? Awesome class!

Deva (Elven) Oracle (Ancient Lorekeeper) 1 - AC 16/14T/12FF; hp 9/9; F+1/R+4/W+4; Init. +0; Perc. +2; Sense Motive +8

It looks downright fantastic. One of the better ones they included.

I have to give some thought to the Shaman, but I currently lean towards staying as an Oracle.

Wow. Proficient with the sword cane even! Man that must be rigged ;)

Truly, that's almost the Coup de Grace to straight-class rogues right there.

Shaman is a thing of beauty.

Hate to bring it up, but you might need an Acrobatics roll there Ian. I think the area where Sorkana was standing is still covered in grease. Was planning to have Talyssa dismiss it once she knew that it was going to be a problem.

Deva (Elven) Oracle (Ancient Lorekeeper) 1 - AC 16/14T/12FF; hp 9/9; F+1/R+4/W+4; Init. +0; Perc. +2; Sense Motive +8

I am now leaning towards changing to Shaman. I will keep you posted.

So I don't see anything from Steven tonight, I'll DMPC him and move us to the next round.

I messaged Steve today on Facebook, either way I'll do a round recap tonight after my wife goes to bed. I don't want us to lose too much steam.

I'm rolling a 5th level Shaman for a playtest. Looks like a pretty interesting class. Definitely a lot of potential for great flavor. Can't wait to see what you do with it.

Arcanist doesn't really fit what I'm going for with Talyssa, so she'll be staying pat.

A clever pun Clockwork Shadow?

Glad you caught it!

Working on the next round.

Hey Devinn, I'm sure we all got the pun. You don't have to tweet about it. ;P

I'm considering a idea where I roll all of the groups Init and take the average vs opponents Init and take the average to determine actions, thought?

Stats:

I've had GMs run PbPs that way and it works well. Gets GMs and Players into separate blocks. Are you going to have players act in order of post within the block?

I was considering that, yes

Deva (Elven) Oracle (Ancient Lorekeeper) 1 - AC 16/14T/12FF; hp 9/9; F+1/R+4/W+4; Init. +0; Perc. +2; Sense Motive +8

That is not too different from the way that I do things. It works pretty well.

Human (Risuri) Gunslinger AC 16/14/12 / HP 11 / F +3 R +5 W +2 / Init. +3 / Perc. +6 / Sense Motive +2

It would make combat easier to follow I guess. Would the initiative order within each party be determined by DEX modifiers or the rolls themselves?

Human (Risuri) Gunslinger AC 16/14/12 / HP 11 / F +3 R +5 W +2 / Init. +3 / Perc. +6 / Sense Motive +2

I was thinking about this a little further and had a thought. While having all the players in one initiative block might make the fights less confusing, wouldn't a great deal of the outcome of the fight be won or lost on that single initiative roll for the party?

The concern is with the 1st round of combat. Since everyone is considered flat footed until their action, if the PC's loose initiative and ALL of the enemies complete their actions while the party is flat footed, I think that could be a very bad thing. I hate to think that we get a TPK because of a botched initiative roll.

One of the things that I thought was so cool about Pathfinder is how initiative, movement, and actions are handled. I think if everyone was a little quicker with posts during combat, any possible confusion or slowness of progression may just solve itself. (that is how I'm reading the initial purpose question btw)

I will also add that I'm not trying to suggest anyone is derelict in posting as I know we all get busy with real life. But it also doesn't take but a moment to drop a note in OOC saying you can't post.

Maybe we just agree that if we're in combat and you don't post within a specified time period, then Clockwork can just post actions without notice.

Just my thoughts and please don't anyone take offense as it is often hard to detect ones tone or mood when reading a post and not conversing in person.

Male Human (Risuri) Bard (Sandman) 1st AC 14/12/12 / HP 9 / F +1 R +4 W +3 / Init. +2 / Perc. +7 / Sense Motive +3

For the purposes of getting through this combat encounter I'm fine with it.

I'm not sure I'd love an averaging of our initiative rolls for all combats though, or at least for critical BBEG combats. Instead, it would be helpful to have a running Initiative section (ooc but not spoilered out) on your recap post and any NPC mid-round posts that simply shows the list of names and their initiatives in order (no need to see the d20 rolls), with the players that can take actions in bold. I would think that's eye-catching enough for players to know its their turn to post. That would be my suggestion.

Initiatives:
20 - Elan
17 - Haley

15 - Goblins
13 - Roy
10 - Varsuuvius
8 - Xykon

Elan and Haley are up!

Good Suggestion Devinn, I will try that next post and see if it helps.

I don't like averaging initiative rolls at all. like each player rolling inittiative (or the GM rolling for each palyer). That initiative stays for the combat, unless there are held actions or other interruptions. For PBPs, I like Isaac's approach: you can go in any order you want if a block of PCs goes in a row. But if you're action might impact someone else's combat, you have to wait for the other PCs ahead of you. No fair hasting at 16 so the fighter at 17 gets an extra attack.

So..I found the map, boss. Now I am trying to understand it so I know what Filby's options are. Can I climb or otherwise move down to the powder rooms to help against the fire sprite? If not, can I see through the smoke enough to help Ifris?

Just an FYI as I was chatting about this with Ian earlier - the firesprite I think is not really there, as it took a header out the porthole window. So besides the Ilyian butler threat, I think all the action is down at the very bottom now.

Male Human (Risuri) Bard (Sandman) 1st AC 14/12/12 / HP 9 / F +1 R +4 W +3 / Init. +2 / Perc. +7 / Sense Motive +3

So...Talyssa, Alastair and Filby all need Round 35 actions to finish out, correct?

Invisible but powdered Illyan is commanded to come back to Rhegalion on the Second Deck on his Round 34 action, but is full health otherwise. Anya is alive and stable but only barely so. No fire sprites left at this moment on any decks, and Skimmer is on the Gunnery (third) Deck. Ifris and Ian are both down on the Engineering (bottom) Deck.

@Filby: I think that Devinn gave a good recap, and we are waiting on Talyssa, Alastair and Filby. As far as movement goes, You could climb down the the engineering deck, or the gunnery deck if you like.

There are ladders located at AE12 and AE15 that go all of the way down and due to the deck height of 10 feet, moving down a level takes 10 feet of movement. At this point, vision is not a problem, the lower deck of the ship has grating that allows viewing from below your feet and above you. However things may change later that would cause sight issues, for now its clear though.

I hope everyone had a good thanksgiving! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Talyssa and Alastair are up!

Ok, should be caught up. I reasoned that Skimmer would attack in this situation even though Talyssa isn't there to give him the attack command. Since he missed anyway its irrelevant, but if a similar situation ever comes up in the future, just let me know how you'd prefer to handle it. I'll return him to hovering next round if you would prefer.

So Thanksgiving has come and gone, but I wanted to tell you all that I am thankful to be apart of such a great pbp. I only found this style of gaming last year, and my first few games were so so at best. But the collaboration between players is so wonderful here. I very much enjoy it and want you all to know that.

Thanks Clockwork! I'm really enjoying both the shared storytelling and the shared problem-solving in game.

Hey guys, just a heads up: December is shaping up to be a real bear at my office as law firms get in their billing in advance the end of the fiscal year, so I've been pulling overtime and generally working harder than usual. As such I've been pretty burned out when I get home so I may miss a day or two of posting here and there up through New Years. Please bear with me and any slowness to respond to stuff.

Talyssa, your up!

Ditto! C'mon Jet, knock that murderous-but-grappled butler out with a meaty smack or somethin' (well unless you're heading down the ladder that is)!

In other news, I saw this week in Isaac's Skull & Shackles game (which Celeador also plays in) that one of the players tried to rock this avatar, but couldn't pull it off and decided (wisely) to change it after a couple of days. Some said it was bit too smarmy, too mustache-y for his nice-guy character. All I have to say to that is --- thaaaaaat's right! Mitts off my smarmy avatar! The guy doesn't even have a proper rapier to present with! After all, there's not too many that can pull off the sheer awesomeness of the Devinn look ;)

So true Devinn!

Ian, due to the steam, there is a obscuring mist in effect, so there's a 50% miss chance at range. I can roll for you if you like

Yeah. I've been rolling so crappy I don't think it can get much worse.

Sure, I will do it in the discussion thread. If it did hit then we can leave your text as such. If it diden't then I will include it in the round recap.

50% miss due to obscuring mist concealment (1-50 miss) 1d100 ⇒ 38 MISS!

Sorry mate =/ always next round.

You know "Gunslinger" as soon as you have to draw your axe and go melee you're going to crit with the axe for max damage right? :P

I'll update here tomorrow!

Hi All!

Just to give you guys a heads-up, I'm super busy because of the holidays and haven't been on the Internet outside of my phone in a few days. I'll be delayed in updating things till this weekend, most likely, though if I manage to steal a little time here and there I will!

I hope you all had an excellent week! :D

Back from a trip to visit family. If you have not yet posted, I will DMPC to get this game rolling again and move us to the next round. Expect a post on the morrow.

Your right it does!

Well my friends... I am going away on business. Unfortunately same as before I won't be able to access the fourms, and this will put the breaks on this game. Several kind GM's have offered to relay things via e-mail so I can continue on as a player, but I don't have that ability as a GM. It's not fair to you guys and when I started this game, I never intended for it to be this way. I am not giving up on this game or any other. I love the pbp's. That said, if Devinn wants to keep steam going during my absence he is welcome to take up the reins until I get back, its your call mate. You guys should have posts more often, and I will provide that, but not for a while, not till things settle down more. Thanks for understanding and hang tough in my absence. I will check in when I can.

Wish we could hang out when you're in Houston, man. But best wishes and we'll be here when you get more time.

Morning Guys, I had some things come up. Long story short.. I am back home and have access to the forums. Not sure how long it will last for, but while I am here no need to get e-mail updates. I'll let you guys know if things change.

Hey guys, I have been holding off moving this along, because I wanted to be sure that I would be home and not have to drop off the face of the earth again. I will work on an update and move us forward to the next round tomorrow.
