Are the ruins still hot? Is there any way to tell how long ago the fire happened?
"Bastards!"
Jamir ties Nag of Holding to a nearby tree or post (or part of the ruins if not still hot), draws his rapier, and approaches the ruined house. He puts a hand out to check whether what remains still holds any warmth, and sniffs to learn whether any part of the fire is still burning. If it seems safe to approach, he puts a finger onto the message on the wall to see if the paint is still wet.
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Are. You. Kidding. Me. What is the DC to check whether you are literally on fire? Or to feel whether paint is wet?

lucklesshero |

Although you can't tell exactly how long ago the fire happened, it's apparent it's been at least a few days, if not more. The dried paint has uneasy familiar tint to it.
It looks like the ruins have been picked clean.

![]() |

That check is auto for me
"You might want to wash your hand before eating, Jamir. Unless you're taking vampiracy."

![]() |

Absentmindedly kicking at a piece of charred wood, the alchemist surveys the ruins thoughtfully. "Jawhar, who gave you these instructions again? Seems odd to know the man's name and address but fail to mention that his house burned down a few days past."
Rereading the message, he shrugs. "Maybe they're trying to tell us something? I think we should stash the chest on the Fortune Seeker and then do some asking around, if our missing sage has gone to ground maybe word will get to him that more Pathfinders are in town, and we need to know who dislikes our employers enough to do something like this."

![]() |

"The directions came from an herbalist. He only occasionally made deliveries here. So the house was probably still standing the last time a delivery was made.
From Jamir's retelling of his encounter back at the tavern, it doesn't appear that Pathfinders are much loved in this city, although burning down a house seems a bit extreme.
I agree. We should secure the cargo and come back to ask some questions."

![]() |

Any sign of a body in the debris?
A look of disgust on his face, Jamir starts to wipe his hands on his trousers, stops looks around helplessly for a moment, then surreptitiously rubs at his hand with Nag of Holding's blanket.
Jamir nods in agreement. "But before we go, would it not be appropriate to say a prayer for our colleague? We may not have known him, but he was a Pathfinder, and it seems likely that being a Pathfinder has sealed his fate. Jawhar, would you like to lead us?"
If Jawhar agrees, Jamir moves the party into the middle of the road in front of the remains of Skagni's house, so that the group will be clearly visible to anyone watching from the neighboring homes. He urges anyone speaking to be as loud as possible without actually shouting, so that there can be no doubt that they are mourning Skagni.

Craggark picks about the ruins, trying to determine anything about the root cause of the fire, and to see if anything of value or notice remains.
Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
He additionally sniffs at the substance the message is made out of.
Heal: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18
Is it human blood?
Lastly, he checks the ground around the building to see if any sign of passage might still be marked in the snow.
Survival: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (16) + 0 = 16
He's specifically looking for blood.
Am I still sickened? If so, then -2 to everything.

"Without evidence of his death, I choose to believe that he is still alive.
However, a prayer for his safety would be appropriate."
Jawhar says a few respectful words about the Pathfinder that none of us know, then leads the group through a prayer to Sarenrae to quick healing to anyone harmed by the fire as well as protection of the souls of any unfortunate enough to have been consumed.

lucklesshero |

Jawhar, Jamir, and Torvald bow their heads for a moment of respect near the front of the building. They position themselves so that, the entire neighborhood can view the proceedings. Craggark, seemingly oblivious of what they're doing continues to sift through the wreckage. After a moment he looks up to see his companions gathered in silent vigil and takes a half step to join them before notice 3 men heading towards his friends in a determined manor drawing throwing axes.

Torvald kept his head bowed respectfully as the prayer was intoned, but his thoughts here elsewhere--and his idly wandering eyes catch sight of the the approaching Ulfen. Turning on his heel to face them, the alchemist calmly retrieves a bomb flask, tossing it lightly as he takes a step back and to the left from Jawhar.
If possible, a Readied Action to throw my bomb if any of them attempt hostile actions like throwing axes or charging.

lucklesshero |

The three dirty men approach quickly. Before any of you can react the have descended upon the broken remains of the house and have arms cocked back ready to throw sharp looking axes. You hear one of them say Remember, boss wants the little one alive! With a rush, the axes fly: two toward's Torvald and one at Jawhar.
Thug 1 Int: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16

Thug 2 dmg: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Thug 3 dmg: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
The thugs only get the one action because it's a surprise round. Craggark can take one action then we fall into regular initiative. The regular initiative is "round 1".So after Craggark acts intiative is as follows: Jawhar, Jamir, Thug 1, Thug 2, Torvald, Thug 3, Craggark. (remember Craggark gets one action before start of initiative then it's Jawhar)
Hjort stealth: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Hjort int: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5
these rolls don't come in affect till round 2
Doh! it looks like Torvald got dropped on the surprise round! so unless he's healed, he'll need to make a stabilize check when it comes to his turn.PS..there's a map in the Google drive folder

I'm posting Jamir's round 1 actions in a spoiler - if the GM retcons how the surprise round went in a way that would make this implausible, we can just disregard it. But if we're going forward as is (or if the retcon doesn't change anything relevant to Jamir's first round), then I don't want to lose my dice rolls - I previewed them before I saw Jawhar's post on the Discussion thread.
"Remember, boss wants the little one alive!"
At the thug's warning to his fellows, Jamir gives them a smile full of teeth. "Is that so? Sorry to say that I don't feel the same way about you!"
His grin hardens when Torvald drops. "Not that sorry, actually."
Jamir lowers his head and charges towards the nearest of the thugs, drawing his rapier as he runs. He doesn't slow down as he approaches, but continues at full speed, jabbing the little blade at his target as hard as he can.
Jamir should end his turn at K3
Sharpened rapier, charge: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 6 + 2 = 271d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Confirming crit: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 6 + 2 = 191d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Tossing the vial was a mistake-- is all Torvald has time to think as the approaching Ulfen immediately go on the attack. One of them hurls an axe at him just as he's tossing the vial, and so with a curse the alchemist lunges forward to snatch it out of the air instead of dodging and the weapon bites deeply into his left arm.
Swearing again, Torvald dips his right arm for an underhanded pitch at the densest cluster of Ulfen. "Hot potato!" he shouts, then looks a little sheepishly at the others. "It's all I could think of in the moment..." he mumbles.
Attacking Thug 2, the bomb's Ref save only applies to splash damage
Bomb!: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 Fire!: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 plus 5 splash damage, Ref13 for half

Just to clarify, Jamir's attack is on Thug 1. Since Torvald tossed his bomb in the surprise round, if the splash damage is enough to take Thug 1 down, then I will need to retcon.

I'm not going to alter my declared action for the surprise round. I pull my scimitar and shout to the Thugs. (No Total Defense as I don't have a Standard Action in the surprise round).
For the next round, (assuming the Thugs don't stand down) I will rush to cut off Thug 3 and let the rest of the team deal with Thugs 1 & 2.

The thugs appear out of nowhere and descend upon the party quickly. Jawhar steps forward and try's to parley while remaining on the defense.
What transpires here? Are you the men who set fire to this sage's home? What quarrel do you have with a scholar?
However, it's to no avail as the Thugs heft their axes and throw them at himself and Torvald.
Two of the axes miss but one strikes torvald squarely in the shoulder. Torvald grunts in pain but produces enough inner reserve to throw something of his own [quoute=Torvald] Hot potato!
he shouts, as his bomb lands on the shin of the thug that hit him with the axe. The thug standing next to the thug Torvald tosses the bomb at, sees the arc of the bomb and manages to dance nimbly out of most of the blast radius.
Knowing the a fight impossible to avoid at this point; Jawhar draws his scimitar and advances on the thug closes to him, giving him (Thug 3) a nasty gash with his scimitar across the his left arm and torso.
Jamir caught up in the dedication to the sage now springs into action
At the thug's warning to his fellows, Jamir gives them a smile full of teeth. "Is that so? Sorry to say that I don't feel the same way about you!"
Jamir's blow lands true as the thug that danced out of the way didn't notice Jamir's approach.
The thug that was hit by the Torvald's bomb (thug 1) tries to grapple Jamir.Jamir get's an AoO
Thug 2 steps forward to I-4 and tries to finish of Torvald with an axe throw axe attack from thug 2: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21 dmg: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Ok if Torvald is still up it will be his turn (if not roll to stabalize), otherwise Thug 3 tries to hit Jawhar with an hand axe. Craggark still hasn't gone and can change where he moved. new positions on map updated. should be Craggarks turn unless Torvald is somehow still up.

I think the thug that hit Torvald was Thug 2, and he was the main target of Torvald's bomb. Thug 1 got the splash and danced out of the way. I'm not sure which of them is trying to grapple Jamir, but whichever it is, here is his attack of opportunity:
Jamir spots the thug reaching out to grab him, and lashes out with his rapier to catch the man while he off-balance. "Hey there, watch your hands, please! Don't you know that we small folk are very ticklish?"
Rapier: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 91d4 ⇒ 3

Jamir's wild stab at the thug misses the mark, but throws his opponent off enough that the "little fellow" is able to slip under his would-be captor's grasping hands. Jamir steadies his blade and lunges forward again, taunting the goon again as he does.
"You could still run away, you know. So much less embarrassing than having to admit to the devils in Hell that you were sent there by a halfling. If it is any consolation, I am not just any halfling - I am Jamir Montajay, of the Casimir Montajays!"

Oh, and he power attacks Thug 1.

With a nod to Craggark, Jamir steps up to Thug 1 so that he and Craggark are flanking him.
With a smirk and a twirl of his blade, Jamir starts to sing.
(To the tune of "Little People" from Les Miserables)
"We little fellows know
When little fellows fight
We may look easy pickings
But we've got some bite!
So never kick a fox
Because he's just a kit
Because we fight like rabid badgers
And you'll be in deep..."
Rapier, flanking: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 6 + 2 = 221d4 ⇒ 4
The final word of Jamir's song is cut off by the Thug 1's shout of pain as the little swashbuckler's rapier stabs again into his side.
(If Craggark's attack was enough to drop Thug 1, Jamir steps over to Thug 2 for this attack instead, without the +2 flanking bonus.)

Torvald is in a vast tunnel, carved with runes and lined with statues of great heroes of the dwarves. He's never seen it before, but somehow he knows that he's in a good place. Craggarck moves behind the thug 1 and thug one having no weapon in hand can just watch in horror as he suddenly turns around to feel the mighty crash of Craggark's blow. A moment later Craggark watches the Thug's eyes go wide and he's suddenly slumping to the ground as a bemused and singing Jamir appears from behind the thug with a bloody rapier.
before Jamir had a chance to flank (or Jawhar healed Torvald) it was boss Thug's turn
The boss thug snarls and looks at Jamir, thinking twice he steps forward and throws an axe at Craggark. boss hit: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 - 4 = 11dmg: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 The boss misses Craggark by a bunch.
Jawhar moves next to Torvald and cast Rebuke Death; Torvald begins to stir. Thug 1 is down. Thug 2 draws his last axe and charges Jawyhar. T 2 hit: 1d20 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 2 + 3 = 21 dmg: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3 Jawhar takes a glancing blow from Thug 2.
It's now Torvald's turn he is prone and disabled on the ground and a thug wielding an axe is right next to him. Torvald may take a single action; however most standard actions will cause him to loose an HP and drop unconscious again. Best bet would be for him to draw his con Mutagen. (but this would provoke AoO since you don't have a bandoleer). BTW map is updated with new positions. After Torvald acts it's Thug 3's turn. I'll take his turn assuming there's very little Torvald can do to stop him
Assuming Torvald could change nothing about thug 3's action; it's Craggark's turn.

Torvald, sorry to bring this up but you still can't act before Thug 2 in initiative even if Jawhar has healed you to the disabled condition. Jamir smirks at the thug he just stabbed, but he is wincing on the inside at how little damage it seemed to do. ”Of course, your boss may not care what happens to you. Do you two gentlemen - and I use that term loosely - care what happens to him, I wonder? Because my good friend approaching him - the big fellow in the chain shirt, bluish skin? - is going to rip off your boss man’s arms and beat him to death with them. Really loyal henchmen might want to try to assist their leader, instead of chopping up an unconscious priest and dwarf. And a halfling, even one as interesting as I might be.”
”But perhaps you are not loyal henchmen at all, but only men doing a job? Who among us has not had a day at work like this? The boss tells you it will be an easy job, just grab the halfling, and the only opposition will be a priest, a dwarf, and a half-orc wearing almost no armor and without any obvious weapons. How hard could it be?”
”I would suggest you ask him —“ Jamir points at the rapidly cooling body of Thug 1 ”— but I do not think he would have much to say.”
”But what difference does it make if your boss is bludgeoned into paste by his own expropriated limbs? None at all, I am certain, because you two look smart enough to have demanded payment in advance. And because you have already been paid in full, why, who cares if Craggark there puts a bloody end to your employment?”
”At this moment, I would like to try negotiating with you. You know how it goes,” Jamir drops his already deep voice an octave lower, ”’Walk away now, and Craggark will let your boss live,’ that kind of thing. The problem is, once he gets going like this, he is very hard to call off. Your only chance is to get back to your boss before Craggark finishes him. If you make a move against the priest or the dwarf, first, I will cut you, and second, you will be too late to save your payday. If you start running now, you might be able to fend him off, but you need to start running RIGHT NOW!”
Jamir shouts the last words at the two thugs as loud as he can.

I will spend my GM star reroll on my Power Attack on the "boss".
Epic Power Attack reroll: 1d20 + 4 - 1 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 - 1 + 4 = 271d6 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 3 + 2 = 10
Crit Confirm: 1d20 + 4 - 1 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 - 1 + 4 = 121d6 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 3 + 2 = 9
Ah yes; we were owed that by the Dice Gods.
Craggark's fist connects with the soft area of the Ulfen's neck, a sickening crack indicating a broken clavicle. His steely glower indicates more fists are a-coming as the unarmed Ulfen splutters and gasps.
Jamir's words echo across the ruins.
