What about feedback on Talaos?

Silver Crusade

Cold Iron and Silver are actually fairly cheap as long as you are not getting them on big weapons; Cold Iron doubles the cost of the rapier to 40gp, and Silver only adds 20g to the cost of the dagger.

Now if he were getting a Silver Greatsword, that's another story...

The big problem will be if he wants to get an enchanted Cold Iron rapier, as it adds an additional 2,000gp to the cost, for a total of 4,640gp for a +1 weapon!

Light shone through. A muscular light skinned man, or at least what appeared to be a man, sat up on a metal table.

"Good morning David." a voice said over a grating intercom. "State your prime directive."

David rubbed his throat as his vocal responders calibrated. "Infiltrate and recon. World Wound Crusade. Assimilate, and follow directives of squad overseer."

"Good" the voice said, not actually sounding pleased. "Proceed down the red line to the next room, for outfitting." the intercom clicked off.

David stood. Naked on in a metal room, a single red stripe led to the only door. In the next room, identical to the last save instead of a table there was a rack with a scimitar and armor. Equipping himself, David proceeded down the red line to the next room. Commons, where he was to meet his counterparts.

I like the sound of it, so I'll check it out. Is that something different from the skirmisher or trapper, and would you recommend it more?

I apologize, I had thought that I had mentioned something before. I think that you have a pretty good thing going with the soulknife. I have so many people wanting to run a psionic character, that I might have to break out my copy of the Unleashed sourcebook this weekend and play catch up.

I have Talaos' implanted memories up as well.

Suthuri here. This is Sarasanna as I've got her statted up so far. Kind of in early development; not quite field ready. I don't have her skills done yet, because I am not sure whether I am going to go urban ranger, trapper or standard as of yet. Please let me know if I have the point buy alotment right, or if I am missing any race features.

I looked for the spell-less ranger on the SRD site. Is this the one you mentioned, the skirmisher? Or were you referring to something from the spell-less ranger supplement from kobold quarterly? I don't have the latter, but I would be glad to check it out if you would recommend it.

I believe the skirmisher archetype would be consistent with the urban ranger. The skirmisher trades hunter's tricks for spells, and the urban version primarily changes some class skills and early and much later class features. The two should be consistent, if it would alright to be a spell-less urban ranger.

I'm interested to try out the feats from the Occult Mysteries book - Sacred Geometry and Arithmancy. In essence, they allow certain arithmetical manipulations based on either spell name or random numbers to increase CL or add metamagic effects to the spell. For the purposes of this game, they will represent the android's ability to calculate the environmental variables and calibrate the nanites to match those.

To this end, I've come up with a Sorcerer (sage) concept, possibly branching into Cyphermage at higher levels. I plan to stick to knowing spells which can be explained via technology, such as force/light/heat effects mostly.

backstory:

A robed old man is standing in front of a young tattoed man sitting on a chair in a featureless white room. One of the tattoos is a glowing spiral-like form.
- "What is your name?"
- "Eugene.
- "Where and when were you born?"
- "Kenabres, 23 years ago."
- "What is your favorite place in Kenabres?"
- "The Church of Iomedae."
- "And why is that? Are you religious?"
- "I used to be. But now I know that one's life should not be trusted to god's whims."
- "What do you currently feel?"
- "I feel... empty. Inside. Here" - as the youngster's hand touches the glowing tattoo, a tiny spark cracks between it and the finger. The older man frowns and writes down something on a tablet he is holding, then continues his questioning.
- "Is this because of your parents?"
The youngster silently nods his shaven head, and his lips slightly tremble. A single large tear drops on the floor. The older man smiles and makes another note in his journal.
- "I am sorry to have touched on this subject."
- "It's alright. Excuse me, we can continue now."
- "What do you know about the Riftwardens?"
- "Almost nothing. I know that my parents - the real ones - were among them, and that they fought demons in the Worldwound."
- "How do you feel about them?"
- "I am dying to learn more. I want to know more about my real progenitors, to better understand myself. I want to avenge them." The man looked straight into his interrogator's eyes. "I know that their demonic murderer is still at large. I can feel it here" - he tried to touch the glowing tattoo again, but this time a visible arc of electricity caused his hand to twitch a few inches away.
A door opened and another older man in a white robe entered the room.
"That would be enough for today."
The young man immediately grew listless, as if petrified. Only the glowing tattoo was slightly pulsating.
"I think we made good progress since the last test. We'll have to work on the subdermal isolation some more, calibrate the emotional response feedback circuits and re-seed the vocabulary chains, but looks like he'll be finished on time for the mission. The Black Sovereign will be pleased."

Alright, backstory's finally finished. It's very long, so I've got it spoilered in two sections. I included some relatively different ideas, so if anything needs to be altered, I'm happy to change it. Also, if you don't like the text for Lucifer's "android voice," I can do something different.

Backstory Part 1:
"Again. What is your name?" The other man looked back to his notes even as he asked the question.

"Lucifer Graves." The man shifted in his seat, trying to rest his bulk on its smooth metal surface. His body was all knotted, lean muscle, hardened from long years of hard labor--the same hard labor that had twisted and hunched his back ever so slightly. His hair was long, untame, dark, pulled back with a strip of leather. He had a beard and mustache, and wore a working man's clothing, worn through and patched innumerable times, layered with dirt and dust. Whatever color they were originally, his clothes were now a brownish-gray. He looked like a laborer approaching middle age, a simple man living in hard times.

Looks can deceive.

"Tell me about yourself, Lucifer."

The man folded his gnarled, calloused hands on the table. He began to speak--perhaps a tad too quickly. "I was born in southeastern Mendev, far from the crusades. My father was a scribe in a local monastery, devoted nominally to Irori, but it held shrines to many of the crusaders' deities. My mother died in childbirth, so I was raised by the scribes, monks, and clergy. They taught me about the gods, the religions, and the practices. I learned to read and write, and I learned a little about combat from some of the more martial ascetics. But I wanted to be a priest more than anything else." Here he frowned.

"But you are not a cleric. Why?"

"I felt the call here," he said, pointing to his chest--again, quickly. "But the gods must not have heard it. I prayed to all of them, but none of them answered. I became a plainclothes pastor devoted to Pharasma, authorized to give sermons and perform the rites, but I never had the magic. It seems I never will." He shook his head and a solemn look crossed his face.

"Continue. What happened after your ordination?"

"The monastery had more than enough priests and priestesses already, so I decided to strike out on my own. I was never particularly close to my father, and he thought I should make my own way in the world. I headed west, wanting to see the crusades for myself, and to help minister to the people in my own way. I eventually found a small town near the West Sellen River, between Kenabres and Star Keep. It wasn't a major stop for the warriors, but its people were always touched by the wars, and they played their part in the crusades. I was happy to do what I could, and it was a better place for a priest without magic than I'd hoped to find. I helped the people in town."

"But that's not all you did."

Lucifer frowned again. "No. How did you--"

"Continue your story," the other man commanded. He was still writing, always writing.

"...I also made my way up and down the border, helping to bury the dead. There were many of them, and those who were not to be cremated would be buried. Of course, most true clerics weren't able to dig the graves--not fast enough, anyway. I was strong and able, and I was good at digging. As a priest of Pharasma, I was also able to perform the funerary rites, so I was useful." He shrugged. "It was another calling, in its way."

"But you didn't stay."

He shook his head. "No."

The other man paused, letting the silence draw out for several seconds. He eventually looked up at Lucifer, an expectant look on his face. "...And? Why is that?"

Lucifer stared at him for another moment. "There was an incident. It happened in town. After a small party of crusaders came through, on their way to the front. They must have been tracked back to us."

"What happened?"

The man furrowed his brow, closed his eyes, shook his head. "They came on us in the night, a band of them. Demons, I don't remember what kind. Kinds. They slaughtered the entire town, screaming with cruel glee, laughing and shouting like rowdy children. I woke up to the flames and the screams of the dying. I ran out--"

"With that?" The other man pointed to a shovel leaning against the wall. Its haft was made of strong hardwood from the south, and its head was a bluish metal--cold iron.

Lucifer nodded. "Yes."

"Where did you get it?"

"It was a gift from the town's smith, after I delivered his child. It was more a symbol than a weapon."

The other man scribbled in his notes and nodded. "Continue with the story."

"...I ran out to see what was happening, and when I saw the demons, I shouted and tried to fight. Of course I was no match for them, and one of them slashed my chest with its claws."

"Show me."

The man paused, and then undid the ties on his shirt and vest. He removed them, showing a powerful chest and stomach, across which ran a set of four parallel scars, pallid and ugly.

"Is that where you got those marks?" The other man gestured to the strange lines and symbols that ran across Lucifer's body.

"I guess so. We all guessed it was some sort of side effect of the demon attack."

The other man nodded. "What happened then?"

Lucifer shrugged as he covered his wounds. "I passed out, and they left me for dead. Pharasma wouldn't have me yet, though. I woke up the next day, when a caravan of crusaders came into town. There were less than a half dozen left alive, and the soldiers took them back to Kenabres."

"And you?"

The man's face turned grim. "I stayed behind to give the dead their dues and bury them. I wouldn't leave them to rot."

The other man looked at him with a puzzled expression. "And after that?"

"I returned home to the monastery to tell them what happened, and tell them my plans. They seemed disappointed, whether with me or the way things had happened I'm not sure, but they gave me a mule and some equipment. Now I'm headed to Kenabres."

"Why are you going to Kenabres, Lucifer?"

"To take up arms in the fight. I have a breastplate that a passing crusader left in town to show gratitude for my burying his comrades."

"And weapons? Surely you won't use a shovel."

"And why not?" Lucifer asked defiantly. "I'm a gravedigger by trade, and I know how to use one. They're more effective than you might think."

The other man frowned again and continued writing. "Now, tell me..."

The door opened and another man came in, older than the others, dressed in the same robes as the writer. "Tell us why you're going to Kenabres, WE-LG-02."

Lucifer's eyes went blank and he turned his head sharply but precisely to face the new arrival.

"I ̢a͞m p͡a͝rt o͝f͘ ͡t̸h̕e̵ exp̕e̶di͘t̨íon̷ ͟to̸ ͞i̸n̡ves͠t̛ig̷atè tḩé ͟Wo͝ŗldwo̶ưnd an͡d͠ e̶x͠a̶m͢i͞n̛e͠ pos̕şib͡ìlit̨įes of s͠h̴arin̨g̕ the t͡e̷c҉hno̸l͢o͢g̢ica͘l͏ ͞wealt̀h ͘of Ǹum̸eri͜a̶ w̧it̨h͠ the w͜o͡rld̡ ͢a̢t ͢l̀a̧r̢ǵe.͏ I w҉i҉l̷l ̨acc͟o̡mpa̛ny҉ ͘a͝ ̛ģroup of s͝imi͢lar in͜d͘iv͡id͝u̸a̡ls̷ i͢n th̴is̶ o͠b̡j̕ec͠ti͡ve, ͠an̷dro͟ids lik̷e ͘m̕y̛s͜e҉l͘f.̷ ͏A̢s̶ a̡ ̸si̴d̀e n̶ote̡, ҉I ̡a͠m ̨án̶ ̸expe͘rįm̷e̕n͢t̴ in ̛d͠eep̵ ̨cover ͘p͞ers̨ona͏l̀íti̡e̡s fo̸r a̵n̕dr̡o̴i̡ds,͜ with͘ a͏ mo҉r̶e ͏ex̛te̢nśįve set̵ ̨of ͝ím͏plan͘t͝e̛d ͜memorie͏s ̧th̨a̶n i̴s̛ ̷the ̕n͘o̶rm ͡f͡or m͠y ͞k̨i̢ņd.̶"

"Good. Now go rest. When you awaken, run executive Lucifer Graves."

Without a word, Lucifer stood, grabbed his shovel, and exited the room.

Background Part 2:
The older researcher sat down where the android had been and rubbed his jaw. "Now that's what I call a head job."

The younger researcher nodded and slid his notes across the table. "You're not wrong, sir. I don't know whose idea this was, but the prospects are certainly interesting. He's got a whole personality, memories... a life, in his own way."

"It, lad. It's an android, not a man." The old man looked over the notes. "It is intriguing, though. Who in the Nine Hells wrote his life?"

"One of the younger researchers, a new one. Fancies himself a bit of a writer. Thought it should be 'tragic and desperate,' if memory serves."

The old man smiled. "I guess he accomplished that. Well, the adaption seems full, although its extent is a little troubling. The fact it barely knows it's an android at all could be dangerous, especially considering what happened to its predecessor."

The younger researcher cleared his throat. "If you don't mind my asking, sir, what did happen to WE-LG-01?"

The old man stood after signing the bottom of the notes, which now had APPROVED in large letters written on the top. He opened the door and looked back.

"It believed its memories completely, and took to them stronger than expected. Now it truly thinks it is Lucifer Graves, and decided to ignore the crusades. We found it digging holes in the middle of the night--six feet deep, the size of a body."

The young man shivered. "It was dismantled?"

The old man barked a sharp laugh. "No, we set it to work. It's been digging graves at another facility for a few weeks now, after we removed its vocal chords." He stepped out and paused for another moment before shutting the door.

"Let's hope we don't lose this one."

EDIT: Any feedback on crunch and backstory would be great!

I believe the skirmisher archetype would be consistent with the urban ranger. The skirmisher trades hunter's tricks for spells, and the urban version primarily changes some class skills and early and much later class features. The two should be consistent, if it would alright to be a spell-less urban ranger.

I was in fact thinking of the spell-less ranger. That being said, the skirmisher is pretty close to what I was thinking, and I think that you should be fine on that score.

I certainly like the idea that you came up with, and it does have a certain...logic to it. That being said, I would suggest that you might want to spend a few gold on some basic gear: While I don't worry about encumbrance and such, I do take a look at what each character's loadout will be; androids need to eat too, and some of that basic equipment will come in handy throughout the AP.

All I can say is...nice stats!! *wink* I have to admit that, I have never seen a character show up to play with just a shovel before. Do you plan to take a few improvised weapon feats along the way, or do you plan to play the 'merc with the shovel' type?

Sorry if the stat block was bit confusing. It is better organized when I make a Alias. I had not put together an Aegis yet either, but this seemed like a cool fit and you were allowing 3rd party and Psionics so I gave it a shot. So thanks for the consideration. Any idea when a decision may be made or recruitment will be closed? Thanks.

@Ashe: I'll be be closing this off on Friday at the latest, as I am allowing a little extra time to make up for the lack of activity (on my part) during the weekend. If I get enough people responding before then, however, I'll give about a day's notice of the closing.

Cool, thanks. If you don't like the Aegis I can come up with something else but if your cool with trying it out then I will sit on my submission.

At this point, I am fine with the Aegis as a class. It looks like I'll be having at least 1 psionic in the group at this point, judging from the entries so far, so it looks like I'll have to brush up a little on the subject, and perhaps think of vile, evil ways to adjust the AP for all the mind farts coming my way. :p

If selected and he survives to the point that the medic role outlives it's usefulness, I can see an organic transition into an Archaeologist Bard happening(or maybe a third party class and or archetype).

I'll work on getting together the fluff now

Well as an Aegis I don't have any psionic powers even though I get power points. I think they are used if you multi class or to activated some of the psionic feats. If chosen I will provide headaches the old fashion way of just beating the snot out of things :)

Mythic path would be guardian with this guy, maybe dual path, but maybe not.

Slightly pressed for time, but here's a simple take on his back-story.

Comments and criticisms welcome, there is certainly room for expansion.

Background:

Spoiler:
Bethune was created with the imprinted memory of being saved from the Worldwound by a mysterious worshiper of the Goddess Desna. This act of kindness in his memories has shaped the whole of his personality. Perhaps more so than many of his android peers, Bethune has shown some grasp of emotion and at times seems very empathetic.

He 'remembers' growing up in Kenabres. His father was a elder surgeon(his mother had passed at birth) and a healer was always in high demand. Such high demand that young Bethune found himself elbow deep in blood and bandages by his tenth year, assisting his father in treating the dead and dying. He saw his own father succumb to old age before he had lived two decades.

He believes this has left him cold, and he left to wander for awhile when his father passed. His desire to do good soon would bring him back to Kenabres, where he knew his type would be needed. He is torn between his drive to aid others, and the cold disconnect that he has with them. He is sure however that answers lie near the Worldwound.

Thanks!

Thanks!

This looks like a good start, although you'll need to integrate a memory of you somehow ending up in Numeria (perhaps working under a tutor for a time, for example), so that you can state that you ended up on a wagon with four other passengers, heading back to Kenabres. Basically, the campaign will start as the driver drops you off near the festival going on inside the city.

Haha, thanks. It is a little different, although it's similar to concepts I've tried out before--the Rough and Ready trait is a very fun and flavorful one in my opinion. Catch Off-Guard and Improvised Weapon Mastery are definitely on my list of feats to take--I was actually considering using the Surprise Weapon trait combined with Catch Off-Guard at 1st level to get that extra boost to hit, but I also feel like Lucifer would only really know how to use a shovel... Actually, it would be easy to have him learn an unorthodox, self-defense type combat style in the monastery that revolves around using whatever's at hand. If you don't mind, I'm probably going to alter his feat and trait that way.

The main thing is going to be trying to find a magic shovel, or a spellcaster willing to enchant one. I don't imagine it's a common request.

I'm fine with you making the changes. As for the shovel...well, perhaps something could be done, down the road. I'll have to take a look at my inventory and see what I can dig up.

There's always the Mattock of the Titans...

With Enlarge Person, it could be used as an oversized weapon. ;)

I got the Spell-Less ranger supplement off Paizo, and after taking a look at that, it is very nice. I find attractive the idea of combining stealth (sneak!) attack with favored enemy. The improved list of ranger talents is also impressive. So I decided to go for Spell-Less ranger. Thanks for suggesting it!

So with that choice made, I have added Sarasanna's skills, weapons and armor. I am thinking of going for the two-handed weapon combat style. So her first feat shall be power attack. I really like the idea of swapping between the long spear and heavy flail. Though any further suggestions would be appreciated. EDIT: Also please let me know if we have access to any special materials or weapons in virtue of being in Numeria.

Also added her

implanted memory:
Exposed to Awfulness. This is perfect for this character! The real Sarasanna was actually killed by a demon. The memory of this death has been implanted into this android Sarasanna clone, in the hopes that there may be information in that memory that shall enable the android to survive should she have a close call with a demon again. This enables Sarasanna to reroll a vital save vs. demonic violence.

And two other

perfect traits for her:
Scholar of the Great Beyond (scan for data on demonic target). And Demon Slayer (scan for weaknesses in target. Weakness determined). Sarasanna is the android clone of a Technic League member's dead sister turned into a demon killing machine. She is like a Terminator programmed for demon hunting!

Yea, I think it makes a lot of sense, given your 'droid's background. I would like to ask if your going to keep your character as a skirmisher, or are you going to try out the spell-less ranger?

Yes, I do believe that was well played on my part, sir. :p

@Loup Blanc: Have you considered Humble Beginnings from Varisia?

I would like to go with the Spell-Less ranger if that is alright. I really like what I've seen in the supplement!

I'm fine with that. Just let me know when you have been upgraded...

Upgraded! At level 1 there is not a huge difference between the Spell-less ranger and the standard except for trading acrobatics for spell-craft as a class skill. Got that done. Changed her class to spell-less ranger from ranger (skirmisher) too.

Where Sarasanna will really start to shine as a spell-less ranger is when she gets stealth attack at level 2! And then it just keeps going from there.

OK, Sarasanna, the stats look good.

Awesome! Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions.

Hm. Not really a fan. 1d4 bludgeoning is very weak, and I'd be just as happy to spend a feat to get Catch Off-Guard for real and use the trait to get an extra +2 to hit. I'm planning to go with a two-handed weapon combat approach, which isn't very feat intensive anyway, so I'll be fine. Plus I like the idea of training to defend yourself with anything and everything at hand.

Just saw this post. Are you looking to already have a pool of candidates, or are you still looking for interested players?

Loup Blanc posting in with an alias I turned into my submission, Lucifer Graves. I've updated the crunch--which included a little tweaking of ability scores along with the updated feats and traits section--and added a brief mention of Lucifer's fighting style in his backstory. He's now geared up to be a rough and tumble survivor who can face the worst of the world and make it back to the Technic League.

I'm leaving recruitment open until Friday at the earliest, Ynaeve. I have a couple of people in mind already, to be honest, but I'm not up to 4 yet, so you still have time to submit.

In looking at your toon's stats, I would say that a Wiz15/My5 is a bit high to play in this campaign. However, if you are partial to the avarial race, you could 'evolve' into one using the 'advanced' android template that the PCs will pick up as the AP progresses.

this toon was for another game. I'll put something together to offer for here.

Are you open to modifications to the android 'race' via ARG?

Specifically a small android? (0 point modifier)

Tell me what you have in mind. I'm fine with it, I'm just curious.

Birth of an Android:

The magi darted around the corner, grumbling under his breath as he entered his laboratory. "damn bureaucrats! It's obvious that 'a thread of silver' has hidden notes that discuss an alternative entrance to the eastern quadrant!" Throwing the latest batch of supplies he was able to scrounge up Enrev Seluj tinkered with the construct laying in pieces on the table that stood center in the room.

A vat of syrupy liquid hung from the ceiling. The pale bluish glow of the liquid pulsed as it flowed through several tubes plugged into a port on the torso, another into a dis-embodied knee. Several wires ran from a device full of fine clockwork gears sitting on a side table. The wires were connected to a hand laying in a tray, the fingers slowly flexing.

Giggling, Enrev looked at the head of his most recent creation, one eye blinking slowly while the other waited to be socketed into the skull. "I had to call in all the favors I had, but you will be going to the Worldwound. An effective test of your abilities!" Enrev picked up an arm and set the elbow into a clamp. Pulling a wand from his sleeve, he traced runes on the forearm, groups of runes for each of the known schools of arcana soon ran the length of the forearm, each grouping held several runes within it.

Pulling the arm from the brace he placed it near the body. Picking up the hand from the tray he laid it down and activated the arcane forging routine of the table. Energy coursed through the body and the various body parts joined and sealed themselves.

"It lives!" Giggling with maddened glee Enrev grabbed a lever and rotated the table, allowing the childlike android to slide to the floor. "Initiate subroutine Alpha 4-D."

Initializing, initializing, initialized. The android rose to its feet and raised its hands, staring intently as each finger was flexed in turn, and then in patterns. Satisfied, the android stood and looked up at its master, Your orders?

Clapping, Enerv hopped a little at the success as he stepped over to a bench along the wall. Swiftly sliding several sets of schematics labeled Mark 47, he pulled a small journal book from under the stack.

Turning and holding the journal out to the android Enrev instructed "read through this. Memorize programs 4, 7, and 14. Load subroutines 1, 2, 6, and 9."

Enrev turned and headed for the corridor, "I have final preparations to make, your first mission is in the morning."

So there is a bit of background for your perusal.

Mechanically I'm looking at a small wizard.

Thematically, I'd like to flavor 'his' spells as programs. He memorizes his programs for the day from a programming book. His somatic component is keying an activation on the runes of his arm.

That looks like a very interesting backstory so far. I'm looking forward to seeing the crunch on this one.

I would just like to say, for the record that, while I am certainly pleased with some of the creativity and resourcefulness that I've seen with the character submissions so far, I'm kinda surprised that no one has yet to submit a divine caster of some kind, or a paladin. I do have a straight-up fighter, as well as a soulknife in the mix, but given the religious tones of this AP, I have to wonder if paly's and cleric/oracle types are just not popular right now.

Just my 2cp. I'll hang up and listen to the comments.

For my part, while I actually am quite fond of Paladins, other Divine casters actually leave me a bit cold. I had an idea for a Sarkorian Druid for this AP, but given the others parameters, it really wouldn't fit. At least not initially. I might manage a Paladin, but my personal 'go-to' deities for LG characters in Avistan are either Shelyn or Erastil & I'm already playing Paladins of both in other Campaigns & Iomedae, Saranrae and Torag leave me rather cold. Not even going to try & find an Empharael Lord I would like. Although now that I think of it, I have had ideas for 'priest's' of either Korada or Kurgess that might be fun... Especially Kurgess if some of the rumors I've heard about the Heirophant associated Campaign Trait are anywhere near true...

Which means I only need to re-write Iacobus as an Android... Yep, that's do-able. Should have him ready for your perusal shortly.

I actually had been thinking about creating a cleric or some other divine spell caster for this. It would be interesting to do an android created by a follower of Desna who was trying to see if he can program "freedom" or something along those lines. I think he or she should definitely be more of a buffer or de-buffer instead of healer, especially with Besnic the medic. I have been looking at the saint class, but I really do not know third party publisher materials that well so if anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate them...
