Wrath of the Righteous AP - DM Le Roy Batty (Inactive)

Game Master Le Roy Batty

Get ready to join the crusade against the Demons of the Worldwound!

1 to 50 of 101 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

Greetings fellow adventurers!

Seems like there's a lot of interest around here for the Wrath of the Righteous AP, and as I sit here with the books open beside me (getting ready for my regular IRL group), I started thinking: I've always wanted to try Play-by-Post. Looks like a lot of fun when I read them, and scheduling a consistent RPG night with 5 people is always difficult.

I am not new to RPGs or play-by-email games, but since this is my first foray into this specific forum I throw my hat into the ring with one caveat - it might take me a bit to get aquatinted with how the system works.

About me:
I've been a lurker here up to this moment, so unfortunately you won't have a lot to go by when deciding to join this campaign. However, I will at least introduce myself. I'm 31-year-old game designer and writer from Seattle, WA (PST). I've played 2nd ed. D&D for over 15 years, but I recently switched over to Pathfinder and I am enjoying it. I also like GURPS but no one seems to want to play it in my circle of friends. :( I won't say I'm the most experienced DM in the world, but I've put in some time behind the screen, and I have an excellent knowledge of Pathfinder because even as a player I'm a stickler for the rules.

Character Creation Rules:
- Any Paizo core book, no 3rd party (balance issues)
- 20 point buy, no stat above 18 or below 8 (including racial bonus/penalty)
- Max HP 1st level
- All races are open for use
- All classes are open for use
- Pick 1 campaign trait from the WotR Player’s Handbook (work this into your background)
- Pick 1 other trait from the huge list of traits.
- Buy at least 1 Cold Iron weapon. As Demon hunters you would have these.
- Figure out your religion, it's not just filler in this campaign.

Campaign Rules:
- LIMIT: 4 players
- No combat map (2nd ed. style - use your imagination)
- Group Initiative
- Post at least 5 days / week
- Recruitment closes this weekend (1/5/14)

If you want to join in, please make a 1st level character and write up a 1 or 2 paragraph backstory that ties in with your campaign trait. No huge walls of text please, more like an elevator pitch that we can flesh out together if you end up joining the party.

Thanks!
-Le Roy Batty

Dotting in with a Elven cavalier. Still need to work on him a bit.

Hi, might be interested in this game. What's our starting wealth?

I am interested in joining this. I like the theme of corruption and redemption, so I think I'll build a character around that.

I'd like to build a tiefling ranger - I think the usual cheesiness that is associated with such a character actually works rather well here. If you would allow me, the tiefling (of demonic taint, of course) would have its taint not from heritage but from a vile ritual performed on him. I would have him start on the brink of confused madness, trying to make sense of his life and with a deep smouldering hatred for the demonic kind and their cultists.

The character would be somewhat of a loner trying to fit back into his life and get a sense of connection back. He would be naturally inclined towards being good, but his taint and traumatic past will often hamper him.

I always enjoy PbP for being able to post a characters raging inner troubles while the story carries on. I'll cook something up later today.

Consider me interested in playing a bard/trickster. Stats are mostly worked out. I've the shell of a backstory in mind but nothing written out yet. I'm also trying to get my gear selection just right.

I'm very interested. I have a human slayer that I wrote up just for this, but that's probably straying a bit too close to Kludde's concept. A shame, I liked her.

At any rate, I think I'll submit either a paladin, who might actually be a warpriest instead, or a rogue.

The rogue is interesting. He's a very nearly reformed con-man who wants to be good, yet he keeps giving into various forms of temptation.

He's the guy who keeps trying, even after he knows that he's failed.

The bad boy of the band.

I am going to DOT with Him here, I know he's a little strange. *wink* but who isn't I will have to change a trait I know but I will figure that out shortly. I have to get that book for the traits, I will post again with the changes and background shortly

------EDIT----------
Replacing Subject of Study (Undead) with

Touched by Divinity: As long as you can remember,
you’ve had an unexplainable interest in one deity in
particular. One of your parents may have been a priest
of this deity, or you may have been an orphan raised
by the church, but these alone cannot explain your
deep connection to the faith. You’ve always felt calm
and at ease in places holy to the deity, and often have
dreams about the god or goddess visiting you—most
often in the form of a sacred animal or creature. Your
faith is strong, even if you don’t happen to be a divine
spellcaster—if you are a divine spellcaster, you should
be a worshiper of this deity. You begin play with a silver
holy symbol of your chosen deity for free. In addition,
choose one domain associated with your chosen deity.
You gain the use of that domain’s 1st-level domain spell
as a spell-like ability usable once per day (CL equals
your character level). Associated Mythic Path: Hierophant.
Multiple Characters: If other characters choose this trait,
you should all work together to decide what deity you’re
associated with—it should be the same deity shared by
all of you. You might even share the same dreams.

Domain: Luck Domain

DESCRIPTION

You gain temporary, intuitive insight into the immediate future during your next attack. Your next single attack roll (if it is made before the end of the next round) gains a +20 insight bonus. Additionally, you are not affected by the miss chance that applies to attackers trying to strike a concealed target.

Item: Cold Iron rapier
Background:

Being a son of a Calistria priestess and a very rich man, he was brought up in the Church and was thought the ways of his mothers Goddess. While growing up he had a dream of a tall thin man that would kill his mother.
He Prepared from that time of to hunt down this man even though that he had never been there and never shown himself or anything. The guy has always haunted his dreams. One day many years later the man had finally shown himself and took his mother away she was smitten by him. The Person that stole his mother never killed her as far as he knows, but He still beleives that she is dead.

I'll throw my hat in the ring for this, I may need to tweak a little and mess with the backstory some, but the bare bones of the character are here.

Elven Magus (Hexcrafter)

DMK here, here's the short of it. I'll put the long up later.

Standard starting wealth - don't roll, just take the average.

Wow, you guys are quick! I may cut the recruitment phase short if I can find an interesting crew before Friday.

Here's a list of the character's that have been stated out so far:

--------------------
Not everyone is what they seem at first, and in Sana's case, this is even more true than usual. Since birth, she's been particularly attracted to a deity that few people would admit to worshipping: Yog-Sothoth, the Key and the Gate, a great being often mistaken for evil... but, as Sana understands, her deity is more misunderstood than anything else. Incidentally, she worships most of the pantheon of Outer Gods, but Yog-Sothoth is her favorite.

What she DOESN'T like is any evil associated with her patrons. Problems in her past have pushed her away from the sort of militant "good" that some advocate, but she has a particular dislike for demons, devils, and anything that claims to be part of the Dark Tapestry but is actively looking to cause harm in the world. She thinks that evil gives the unknowable a bad name, and mostly just wants people to understand where she's coming from. Accordingly, Sana's been known to go out of her way to try and thwart the plans of evil... and considering her holy heritage, she's actually got a bit of an advantage at doing it.

Sovereign Court

if the other 2 change their traits you'll have a nice party right here. And they're pretty good RPers too.

I would love to do a paladin of Ragathiel, marshall?

DM Le Roy, I'm submitting Aladir Cyruthion, an Elven Scout with the Chance Encounter trait. The information on the profile should still be complete from the campaign I was in that ended early. Please let me know if everything looks ok. Thank you!

Or even a bard trickter?

Caleb D'Mentin, the son of a son of a Crusader. While his family has always been worshippers of Aroden and after his passing of the Inheritor, there is something in the story of the Emperyal Lord Ragathiel that calls him to battle. How many thousands of innocents have died at the hands of the demons? Late one night as he pondered this, falling asleep, he had a dream where Ragathiel called him to serve him to help to make right the wrongness of the Worldwound. His vocation firmly resolved, he has come to take on the legacy of his family and the Lord he serves.

I can do stats when I get home tonight

Trait: Child of the Crusades

Caliban, I can work with that background. :)

Let me write the story from the perspective of the child you saved - I'll need to shift the concept a bit (to being part of a ritual in an earlier phase win life), but it will help to increase the desolate, lost shape Kloss is in. I'll be needing some kind of patron to pull me from the downward spiral, shall I pitch some backstory for that?

Here's the updated list:

Touched by Divinity
Thanguron Silverheart - Elf Cavalier
Alucard - Human Inquisitor

Child of the Crusades
Caleb D'Mentin - Unknown Paladin of Ragathiel

Stolen Fury
Caliban Tre'Arthkar - Elf Magus
Kloss - Tiefling Ranger

Chance Encounter
Aladir Cyruthion - Elf Rogue

Rightwarden Orphan

Exposed to Awfulness

-------

Rendal, Fomiel - Since you guys are already playing these same characters in another WotR game, I'm not adding you to the list. I'd like to keep this open for people that weren't able to participate in earlier campaigns. Please message me if I'm mistaken.

Kloss - If at all possible, I'd like to have everyone with a different campaign trait. Have you thought about Exposed to Awfulness? That could fit really well with your racial background.

I can also swap my campaign trait and change up the backstory for Riftwarden Orphan, but I really like the story I came up with.

Also I wasn't sure if you were using the Ultimate Races book, but I think I'd like to swap out one of my spells for one of the Elf racial spells in that book - Blend (Magus 1)

I updated the cold iron weapon, but kept the rest of the gold low to represent Caliban's destitution and only owning what he could carry easily.

I would gladly switch, I even like the boon better. I went for Stolen Fury, as that fit the story better. I was kind of ninja'd writing a backstory - I would say the interaction with Caliban's story is nice, as it gives the same story from two perspectives (aide to the Demon [Caliban] and victim [Kloss]). The fact that Caliban dropped the boy of at a farmhouse, leaving him to his own devices brings up nice opportunities for role-play: kind of like an adopted child meeting his true father. He'll be grateful for being saved, wonder if he wouldn't have been better off dead, and spiteful for being left to fend for himself.

It's been a while since I built a character this dark :)

Le look-up...
I just had a look at the 'exposed' trait. I think the same backstory can effortlessly be used as well, so I'm fine with taking that one.

DESCRIPTION
--------------------
Solsyr is a young man in his early twenties, born and raised in Absalom. Tall with a lithe build, long blond hair, and amber eyes, he traces his lineage to a commingled union of Ulfen and Chelaxian bloodlines. A sunburst-shaped birthmark adorns the center of his right palm which radiates warmth even on the coldest of nights. The priests of Sarenrae who have seen it claim that it is a sign of favor from their goddess.
--------------------
PERSONALITY
--------------------
For the most part, Solsyr typically comes across as quiet, even-tempered, and level-headed. But those who know him best know that his passionate devotion to Sarenrae can express itself in fiery ways. Such as in the face of irredeemable evil, he will unhesitatingly transform into a witting instrument of the goddess' divine wrath.
--------------------
BACKGROUND
--------------------
Solsyr has spent the majority of his childhood and adolescence raised in the Church of the Dawnflower in Absalom. After being trained from Acolyte to full Cleric, he has been preparing for the day that he will finally leave for the Crusade in Mendev. His particular connection to Sarenrae has always been influenced more by her wrathful aspect than by her gentler side, and he has always felt that the ultimate purpose of his calling was to become one of her earthly weapons, a living embodiment of the purifying flame that will one day cleanse Avistan of its demonic infestation.

Currently, Solsyr finds himself drawn to the north. Plagued by nightmare visions of Abyssal legions overrunning a faraway land, he realizes that his strength will be needed very soon by the Crusaders at the Worldwound. He travels to this cursed destination knowing full well that he may have to sacrifice everything in order to ensure that these demons are permanently purged from Golarion.

I'll dot for interest.

How about a human fighter that was told that he was destined to overcome a great evil by a barmy wizard claiming to be from the future?

Submitting Cyrioul Fasar with the Riftwarden Orphan trait.

Fomiel's game stopped a while ago. He didn't make it past the opening scene.

I think the DM lost his internet access?

Anyway, he will eventually know what mythic means.

But keep as backup!

SPECIAL ABILITIES
--------------------
Aura (Ex) The Cleric has an aura corresponding to his deity's alignment.
Carefully Hidden Modern Taldor is not kind to Keleshites. Suryani's life as a member of an unpopular ethnic group has given her an uncanny knack for avoiding detection. She gains a +1 trait bonus to Will saves and a +2 trait bonus to saving throws versus divination effects.
Cleric Channel Positive Energy 1d6 (5/day) (DC 14) (Su) Regardless of alignment, any cleric can release a wave of energy by channeling the power of her faith through her holy (or unholy) symbol (see Channel Energy). This energy can be used to cause or heal damage, depending on the type of energy channeled and the creatures targeted. A good cleric (or a neutral cleric who worships a good deity) channels positive energy and can choose to deal damage to undead creatures or to heal living creatures. An evil cleric (or a neutral cleric who worships an evil deity) channels negative energy and can choose to deal damage to living creatures or to heal undead creatures. A neutral cleric of a neutral deity (or one who is not devoted to a particular deity) must choose whether she channels positive or negative energy. Once this choice is made, it cannot be reversed. This decision also determines whether the cleric can cast spontaneous cure or inflict spells (see spontaneous casting).
Channeling energy causes a burst that affects all creatures of one type (either undead or living) in a 30-foot radius centered on the cleric. The amount of damage dealt or healed is equal to 1d6 points of damage plus 1d6 points of damage for every two cleric levels beyond 1st (2d6 at 3rd, 3d6 at 5th, and so on). Creatures that take damage from channeled energy receive a Will save to halve the damage. The DC of this save is equal to 10 + 1/2 the cleric's level + the cleric's Charisma modifier. Creatures healed by channel energy cannot exceed their maximum hit point total—all excess healing is lost. A cleric may channel energy a number of times per day equal to 3 + her Charisma modifier. This is a standard action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity. A cleric can choose whether or not to include herself in this effect. A cleric must be able to present her holy symbol to use this ability.
Selective Channeling When Suryani channels energy, she can choose a number of targets in the area up to her Charisma modifier. These targets are not affected by her channeled energy.
Spontaneous Casting The Cleric can convert stored spells into Cure or Inflict spells.
Touched by Divinity (shield of faith)(1/day) As long as you can remember, you've had an unexplainable interest in one deity in particular. One of your parents may have been a priest of this deity, or you may have been an orphan raised by the church, but these alone cannot explain your deep connection to the faith. You've always felt calm and at ease in places holy to the deity, and often have dreams about the god or goddess visiting you—most often in the form of a sacred animal or creature. Your faith is strong, even if you don't happen to be a divine spellcaster—if you are a divine spellcaster, you should be a worshiper of this deity. You begin play with a silver holy symbol of your chosen deity for free. In addition, choose one domain associated with your chosen deity. You gain the use of that domain's 1st-level domain spell as a spell-like ability usable once per day (CL equals your character level). Associated Mythic Path: Hierophant. Multiple Characters: If other characters choose this trait, you should all work together to decide what deity you're associated with—it should be the same deity shared by all of you. You might even share the same dreams.
Touch of Glory (6/day) (Sp) You can cause your hand to shimmer with divine radiance, allowing you to touch a creature as a standard action and give it a bonus equal to your cleric level on a single Charisma-based skill check or Charisma ability check. This ability lasts for 1 hour or until the creature touched elects to apply the bonus to a roll. You can use this ability to grant the bonus a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Wisdom modifier.
Touch of Good (6/day) (Sp) You can touch a creature as a standard action, granting a sacred bonus on attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws equal to half your cleric level (minimum 1) for 1 round. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Wisdom modifier.

Background:
Growing up in Taldor has never been an easy prospect for Suryani. Where her older brother Timeon inherited their father's Taldan looks, Suryani clearly takes more after their mother, with her thick black hair and olive skin.

Suryani's mother, once the daughter of a Kelish horselord, fled her homeland and moved to Taldor soon after falling in love with a Taldan soldier. After getting married, they've led a relatively simple life, with Timeon enrolling in military academy on insistence of his father, whereas Suryani stayed home and took up more mundane pursuits.

Suryani however, has felt an irresistible attraction to the goddess Sarenrae all her life, unlike her mother, who only pays lip-service to the traditional goddess of her people. She's even gone so far as to join an underground cult of Sarenites that goes by the name of the Dawnflower Blossoms, since the worship of Sarenrae is actually outlawed in Taldor. This connection she has to Sarenrae is a bit of a mystery to Suryani, but she draws strength from it during hardship. She is curious to learn more about it however, and especially about the recurring dream she's been having all her life.

So it was that when her brother expressed his intention to travel to the Worldwound to pledge his service to the crusaders stationed there, Suryani found himself accompanying him for the journey. But unlike what Timeon believes—that she's just escorting him there—Suryani was actually asked by her parents to accompany him in the hopes of convincing him to abandon this latest foolish notion of his. Because while Timeon has always been an adequate warrior, the truth of the matter is that he overestimates his prowess, while Suryani, in turn, has yet to discover the true strength of her faith.

Physical description:
Suryani is a young woman of 20 years old, of average height. Of Kelish descent, she has olive skin and short, unkempt black hair. Her brown eyes sometimes seem to contain a few specks of gold within them. Her attire consists of leather breeches, a simple cloth tunic over which she wears an old chain shirt, and a red cloak, it's hem embroidered with golden thread. A scimitar hangs from her waist, and she carries a battered buckler. From a silver chain around her neck hangs a silver symbol, depicting a winged female figure, her arms outstretched and her raised head surrounded by a fiery halo. The holy symbol of Sarenrae, also known as the Dawnflower, which she displays openly when not within the borders of Taldor.

People that do not know her might call her shy or timid, but Suryani is used to fading into the background and not drawing notice to herself, usually deferring to her brother. When she does speak, she is is soft-spoken and courteous. As of yet, she's unsure what to do with her life, but she certainly does not feel like any sort of hero.

GM:
You'll notice her background refers to her brother Timeon. I see him as an NPC, which you can use as you see fit, probably either dying or dissapearing in the opening sequence (which is the only part of the campaign I'm familiar with). Suryani herself is not (yet) a hero, but something dreadful happening to her brother could certainly put her on that path. In this light, I have not supplied her with a cold iron weapon, but I have kept the funds for it available should you wish me to pick one up—the simple fact is she hasn't come to Kenabres to hunt demons.

History:

Like any member of her kind, Nik, as she's decided to call herself, is from the northern plains of Numeria. Like any of her kind, she doesn't remember who she was or where she came from. She simply remembers waking up one day fully formed. She wandered about for a while, and eventually figured out this magic thing. She's been practicing for about a year, and it was only a year before that that she woke up.
Recently she has been having dreams from someone she can only assume is Brigh, telling her to head to the worldwound. Curious, she decided to check it out. After all, she's not afraid of the illnesses there. Then again, due to a difficulty with these things called emotions, she's not really ever scared.

Appearance:
Nik has glowing markings up and down her arms and on her face. Her skin is pale and some misguided people take that, to mean she's a dhampir. She also has electric blue hair that reaches her waist. Her eyes are solid white and glow a bit when something interests her.

GM:
I'm sure people will have... issues with a non-living creature like her. Also, Feel free to have fun with just what happened before she "woke up"

Still waiting on some responses/updates from AlgaeNymph, The Dragon, Shalafi2412, and TheCarrionCrawler. After those come in, I'm going to close this recruitment drive and pick a party. (if you've been lurking please drop in and tell me you're working on something) Lots of good stuff, so I may go with 5 or possibly 6 players.

Does anyone have any experience playing PbP with that many players? I can adjust the AP to fit more people, but with a standard IRL game 5 or 6 players tends to drag. Is that also true with PbP?

Sovereign Court

As long as everybody keeps up with the post, you should have no problem.

I recommend that you inform players that you'll NPC them if you you need to move the story along.
Also those who are able to post mulitple times a day, helps in moving a PbF game pretty much faster.

What nightdeath said is pretty much right. If a player takes too long to post in the Pro I am running I just npc them.usually give players between one and two days to respond before boting them. Block initiative, as you said will be used, is also a great way to keep combat speed up.

I'm still here!

Anyway, I decided to play a rogue/trickster instead since that'll work better with the character concept I planned.

Short version: rescuer inspired lustful thoughts, PC seeks to cope through religion, finds Arshea, also becomes aspiring succubus* hunter.

Spoiler:
I suspect the latter would make for some interesting role-playing given this adventure path's open secret.

*Actually fiends that abuse sex in general and not just succubi, but "succubus hunter" rolls off the tongue better.

Question: do cavaliers start out with a mount, and if so, do they have a saddle, bit and bridle?

Sovereign Court

It is generally assumed they do. Of course it's not stated in RAW though as one of my GMs pointed out.

Have made a page for Nik

Backstory

Raised in the church of Iomadae, Thanguron has dedicated his life to spreading the word and raising his sword in his goddesses name, fighting evil wherever it tries to spread its influence. His mother was a high priestess and his father a paladin of Iomadae. They both perished in an epic battle toward the end of the third crusade.
Thanguron has just returned to Kenabres from a six month training camp in the great city of Nerosyan. This training was intense not only with sword and other weapons, but with the teachings of combat tactics to battle the evil creatures that have been known to infest the Worldwound. Upon completion of his training, Thanguron received a cold iron longsword to aid in his cleansing of demonic armies of the abyss.

Submitting Kordica Carraway for your consideration.

Hm... how well could a Lawful Evil kobold monk fit into this?

Yes, I do have one. He's blue, he's a social Darwinist, and he's likely to develop into a more heroic figure should I actually use him.

And I've also been desperate for a chance to play Mythic.

I hope everyone had a great New Year celebration!

The Exchange

And here's a profile to look at.

Liberty's Edge

I'd like to join. Can I use the play test swashbuckler? I have one that is a half elf, chaotic good, and dips urban barb around level seven. I can post his character sheet and backstory tomorrow morning. I'm on my phone right now, and not near my computer.

When are you looking to begin?

I made a couple of small changes to Aladir's character sheet. Namely I swapped out the Dodge feat for Point Blank Shot and I modified the gear based on standard gold for the Rogue class and your requirement of having a cold iron weapon by purchasing 50 cold iron arrows.

Is there anything else that needs to be done or does Aladir look alright to you?

Can we get GM feedback on the character concepts?
