Tawner got an extra roll to try and confirm.

Not being able to do much with everybody smashed up in the bottleneck, and more than happy to let everybody else throw themselves at the heavily armed men, the black maiden holds out her hand again.
Slick Aiming for the greatsword this time. DC 12 or drops it.
She steps back a bit, trying to open up some room for the other fighters to get in.

I'm pretty sure you don't take a cover penalty for reach melee weapons.

Actually:Dominic Radzi wrote:I'm pretty sure you don't take a cover penalty for reach melee weapons.Dominic lashes his whip at the barbarian, trying to avoid Lydia and Fomalhaut.
When making a melee attack against a target that isn’t adjacent to you (such as with a reach weapon), use the rules for determining cover from ranged attacks.
Swinging a long spear or polearm at someone is difficult if someone else is standing in the way.

Thud the barbarian |

"Here's a joke for you..."
"...Um...how do you win a battle of wits with an unarmed adversary?"
The big man seems puzzled by Lydia's remark. "Is the answer: man? So like in the morning he's short, or something, and...."
Then Lydia's weapon traces another line across the man's well sculpted chest.
reflex: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
A moment later, like a bar of damp soap the huge sword slips up out of his hands and embeds itself in the earth inches from Tawner's head.
Reacting quickly he pulls a very heavy flail from his belt and twirls it about like nunchaku. It makes a funny noise as moves through the air. He sends it crashing through the head of the phantom shadow creature that moved to bar its path.
heavy flail v Fomalhaut (rage, power attack): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23 damage: 1d10 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18

The barbarian seems too caught up in Lydia's riddle to notice any additional confusion.
"Wait, what? No, it's...*gasp* FOMALHAUT!"
"Wait, no, I didn't mean he's the answer...."
"'Fomalhaut'!? 'The answer'!?[i] What's a 'Fomalhaut'!?" The Kellid yells, his face twisting from surprise, to confusion, to fury.
"[i]THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE!!" he roars not hearing woman's emphasis and instead hearing a pause separating the words "I didn't mean-' from "he's the answer".

Oh, we're way ahead of Tawner on the whole squishy terrain bit. A shadow has literally fallen across him, but I still need him to make some Constitution checks to see if that is actually 'foreboding' or not. On the plus side, the tanglefoot bag that hit him dries to ineffectual brittleness.
The second brigand moves up, avoiding Lydia's distracted swing.

Settling on it, Tawner parleys a slight stomach complant, a bad hangnail, and annoying bone spurs into a medical discharge from adventuring. He wheezes slightly as he rises to his feet.

Okay, now we're really ending combat, right?
