Tawner shrugs, "I don't know, Lucy. Superstition usually has some basis in reality. Be careful in your rush to take a life..." He stops talking, turns, and walks out the way he came.
"I'll be out here whatever you folks decide," he calls over his shoulder.

"That's the umbrella closet, Tawner."

![]() |

"I know!" Tawner says haughtily. He closes the closet, mutters something about being dark in here like a cave, and heads out the entrance.

Blanch |

She makes a strange gesture with her hands perhaps to drive off evil.
"Is wherrre old Famished Shaman worrrked his blasphemies. I’m not wanting to put my soul in perrril, by speaking of it."
Lucy glares at the woman and speaks curtly.
I don't care for your nonsense superstition. We plan on retrieving an Item there. And if some shaman is there to stop us, we'll kill him. Win win no?
"Forrr you I make exception, but pay in advance." She spits on the dirt floor again.
She gives the group directions to the grove, about a mile away.
"You no kill shaman. He's alrrready dead. Errrastill turrrn him into bearrr and hunterrr herrro boy kill him long ago. My husband use to say bearrr head overrr doorrr was his but stopped because it scarrre away customerrrs. Now have grrruel."

Blanch |

"Head is outside." Blanch says a bit disappointed in Hallimir missing the place's sign. "Is like trrrademark. I was thinking about keeping a tally of a the people who come on a sign next to it: 'Dozens of People Served'. Is catchy, no?"
When you see it again, the bear's head is not particularly big (it was probably immature or from one of the "smaller" species of bears. It looks old and haggard. Knowledge (nature) would help identify it.

And I don't think she can see in the dark either.

Fomalhaut: 1d20 ⇒ 9
Tawner: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 4 = 22
The skies are dark and overcast as the companions approach the place Blanch directed them to. Tawner is first to spot the clearing. A patch of ground overtaken by crimson thistles and punctuated by a ring of mossy standing stones known to Blanch and (presumably) to other locals as Cannibal’s Grove. In the center, somehow visible through the mist, a neglected stone slab bears ancient stains and gouges. An unhealthy-looking mist blankets the area obscuring the ground at your feet, and muffling the sounds around you. Worse, the only noises are a constant unnatural-sounding burbling that echos through the megaliths.
Forest Terrain A line of light forest undergrowth grows along the edge of the stream. A stand of trees next to the stone circle counts as both trees and light undergrowth. Most of the stream is considered difficult terrain.
Mists Thick tendrils of mist rise from the ground and grant concealment to all creatures beyond 5 feet. Concealment gives the subject of a successful attack a 20% chance that the attacker missed because of the concealment.

Sarenrae...
"Stay close. What happens next may not be to our liking."
I'm sure we want to examine it in standard marching order.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

The black maiden walks forward, her eyes gazing about, trying to keep an eye out for her enemies.
Tawner?

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Dominic: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Lydia: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11
Fomalhaut: 1d20 ⇒ 15
Tawner: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Lydia steps into the circle going against the cleric's assumptions about the marching order. The ground is moist and spongy. There is scent of raw sweet meats in the air. Disturbingly, it makes the party members hungry... famished even.
The sequence of events leaves them feeling sickened as well.

Lydia looks to the spirits Beyond to help her resist the terrible urge she is now feeling...
Fortitude save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9
Fortitude save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
...to no avail whatsoever. She suddenly turns around and looks at Tawner with a bestial look in her eyes that he's never seen in them before! She opens her mouth wide, showing even more of those frightful teeth than he saw last time...before she suddenly shoves her own arm into her mouth!
I HUNGER!: 1d4 ⇒ 1
She pulls back pretty quickly, but not before opening a light flesh-wound up upon herself. She looks sick.

![]() |

Do I even count for this?
Fomalhaut sublimes in order to escape the nearly-forgotten undertow of mortal desperation (turning incorporeal).
If I can't do it that way:
Fortitude save: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
I HUNGER TOO!: 1d4 ⇒ 3
Fomalhaut emits an unearthly howl as he appears to literally devour part of his own (for want of a better word) head!
"I has a flavor...."

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Do I even count for this?
Puts on striped black and white shirt. Looks about through the rules. Looks again. Looks up. "I'll allow it." Steps back and allows the action to continue.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

If Fomalhaut is out and about from where ever it is the Lydia normally stores him he can be affected.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Not really, he is himself an incorporeal source of damage (i.e. he pobably takes his mouth with him when ge goes, and we all know he's got a mouth on him) and bites generally include the three basic food groups of physical damage: slashing, piercing and vegatables.

![]() |

In that case...
Fomalhaut bridles at the unwelcome sensation of nearly-forgotten mortal needs, and Lydia suddenly has a shadow again.
...meaning she's also got longer Darkvision, improved Stealth, and Skill Focus (Stealth, Intimidate) for the time being!

Fort save: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Dominic looks at Tawner and, for a moment, sees the tasty morsel that he is. It passes quickly, though not without a bit of regret. He chuckles at the Black Maidens assessment.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

I'll give Tawner until a little later today.

Fort save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
The hairs on the back of Tawner's neck stand up.
"Night of Day! What is wrong with you?" Tawner asks Lydia.
He turns to look at the others, and holds up his hands.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Sees all the total Fort saves of 20 (a 1 in about 8,000 chance). Begins wondering about the dice bot.
"We're looking for a stream. I don't see one yet though." Dominic examines the circle of stones, looking for any symbols.
Dominic: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

Bueller? Bueller?

![]() |

Dominic points out the oddly large picture of an antlered humanoid over a mountain range. "Something about this picture must be important. A stagman?"
He nods at Black Maiden and starts off to the south.

![]() |

Tawner nods to Lydia. "You want help with that?" He points to her arm.
Lydia flinches and hisses in response.
"It's not a big deal," She says a moment later. That said, if you could somehow cure/relieve my sickened condition rather than the damage, that would be different.
As the party goes over the area, Lydia periodically searches for psychospiritual imprints.
She'll also try looking for this stream they've been told about....
Survival, sickened: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

"I think we've known each other long enough to move past the hissing and grunting. You don't look so well." Tawner follows her as she continues her search.

Lydia: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Tawner: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
The party finds the source of the eerie burbling--a stream to the east. And in the stream, in a pile of rocks Tawner sees an wavering light shine from the cracks between the stones.
Map updated.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Yep, it is a light coming from beneath the rocks.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

After a bit of a warm up Dominic concludes it is a magical light.

"Help me move these rocks, Dominic." Tawner stows his shield and wades into the stream.
I put Tawner where I think you're describing. If that's the wrong area let me know.

Tawner is able to shift the stones covering the ghostly light source--a ghastly skull and crossbones lantern on a rusty chain.

"WOW, look at that!" Exclaims Lydia as she moves up beside Tawner to appreciate his find.
Note how I was trying to detect psychic significance as we went along; did this thing react?
detect magic/Spellcraft: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

The World's Most Interesting GM |

"WOW, look at that!" Exclaims Lydia as she moves up beside Tawner to appreciate his find.
The sickened condition passes.
The item (a grim lantern) itself seems magically drained (read: nerfed so that the player's can't sell it for full price anywhere) somehow by being in proximity to the site for so long. Whatever personal significance the skull might have had has been similarly diminished.
As the party unearths the skull lantern, which shines a hellish light from the open face parts of the skull, Dominic notices another cluster of lights emanating from the direction of the standing stones.
Speaking of light? Who's got some (besides possibly the Black Maiden just now)? Map updated.

![]() |

Light? You mean that stuff that keeps Fomalhaut from being able to move wherever?
Lydia suddenly looks noticeably better than she had since her sudden earlier 'snack attack'.
"Now I understand," She says as she looks around. "These screams everywhere...they're all the victims of the old druid who used to live here. Before he'd chop you up and eat you, you'd be stuck watching him chop others up and eat them before he got around to you. That's why Ulisha hid this here. It devours souls, too. It catches them as they escape mortal shells, then it burns them up like coal, slowly or, if the bearer wishes it, like a tiny gout of fiery breath. Looks like it's gotten sick after feasting for too long on the rich local fare, though."

![]() |

Black maiden looks... a little to enthused by that idea.
Very nice... Very nice... to bad to hear it's gotten sick... maybe it just needs nursed back to health to feast again.... bah, what am I saying, mission to be done, magic to be acquired, and then a chance to get back to glorious civilization again!
