Edwin is on the left shelf. Why Edwin can't stand on the shelf without holding with one hand? Did I miss something?
Previously, he was sandwiched between two sets of shelves rather than on top of any particular set. In order to climb or hang from a wall (or bookcase) you need at least one hand to hold on to the thing you are climbing on. So spake the climbing rules. Also, had you chosen one of the single freestanding bookshelves for Edwin rather than a pair that were back to back, you would need to make balance checks for him so bravo!

![]() |

I'm confused. Maybe the problem is that I'm not a native English speaker. You said I was able to climb on the shelf. So I'm up on the shelf. Once I'm on the shelf I shoot from shortbow. In the first turn I climbed the shelf and in the second turn I shot from the top of the shelf. Or??? :)

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Climbing between the shelves, Lakadee swats at the thing hitting it only once as it is as tough as trying to catch a leaf on the wind.
The smack is followed by an eldritch bolt fired by a hopping Razka The bookshelves are 10' tall after all.
I'm gonna reverse myself, and let Bob have a go though the thing as it arcs in to attack. It gets some cover from the shelves, and....

Nobody else goes before it does, so she can't aid anyone else's attack.

"Ugh...annoying thing! Come down lower so that I can see you better," Razka growls.
He wades back to the stairs, going up a few to get a better angle at it. The thing is flitting and fluttering around and flashing in and out of his vision but he directs another dart of magic energy at the thing. He'd never be able to hit it if some enterprising magic user in the distant past hadn't figured out a way to overcome their natural lack of physical skill.

While Edwin's blade only does some impromptu pruning to the treant's foliage as it seeks the little comet, Razka's magical missile darts through Lakadee's branches finally overtaking the protean worm, hitting it with a popping noise, and leaving only a flurry of soap bubbles in its wake.

Dawn climbs up. "Wow, pretty bubbles. Good job, uh... Vina, what's your friend called? And how do I pet it?"
Once the important business is resolved, Dawn pulls out the casing. "You mentioned I should grab this. So.... what's in the case?"

The World's Most Interesting GM |

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Vina looks the water-tight brass scroll tube over, and then (with some nudging from Bob) realizes there is something inside. Unscrewing the top, she withdraws a long, age-yellowed scroll from which she gets feelings of old age, respectable black socks, bitterness, and immense smug satisfaction. The scroll bears the typically unreadable arcane used preserving magic on paper. The handwriting is crabbed, and a little shaky--like it was written by an engineer with a tremor.
1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18
Vina realizes that she has not seen all of the auras and chakras of the large room because of the intervening bookshelves, and minor spiritual auras. Likewise, Razka had only just began to investigate the room's many complex arcane energy signatures.
Razka cannot identify the spell by the way it is written. It seems to be a "preventative for keeping kids from cutting across the corner of the yard" or some such. The scroll's aura strength is 'faint' (but still much greater than the room's background magic). Compared to the other scroll fragments from the Name of the Fox, its texture (both physical and metaphysical) is completely different, as is the handwriting.
What would everyone like to do?

![]() |

Dawn lights one of the branches and sticks it in her hair. "I can swim pretty well for another minute or so. Should we go South West like Bob said, or do we keep investigating this room?"

![]() |

"Before that, do we think the scroll is part of the poem?" Elianna will help out by casting detect magic and then,

Following more whispered suggestions by Vina, Lakadee climbs down the shelves and wades into the waters of the library, going north and keeping Vina dry.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Vina and Lakadee head due north with their everburning torch.
Bob and Dawn head southwest. How do you two plan on seeing?
Razka finds the book How to Talk to a Demodand (If You Must) Ahn-Kolt-Er Sorcerer Pundit of the Jistka Imperium. It seems to be scribed--poorly, and possibly in crayon--in the ancient runes of that long fallen empire.

![]() |

Dawn casts light upon the branches in her hair. "Wait, we can't split up! Vina, where are you going? If you wanna go north, we'll follow you."

![]() |

Suddenly realizing he's without a source of light, Bob turns back to the group. "Oye! Wes kin go whicheva ways fine. Was jess a thought."
Shaking his head, he adds "If the lass wants ter head north first, ya just need ter speaks up." Quickly reloading his musket, taking care to keep the powder dry, he falls in line behind Dawn.

![]() |

"Is this not the way we were going to go in the first place?" Razka asks as he falls in with the rest. The book is not what he's looking for, so he puts it carefully back on a shelf.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

To the north, Vina finds heaps of floating paper, books, scrolls, and various cases, and bindings, as the water has flooded them out of their shelves.

Vina sifts through the papers, and hang them methodically on Lakadee's branches to dry...

"More books." Dawn shrugs. "Foremother's always torn on books. She likes how it preserves knowledge. But you have to chop down trees to make the parchment."

The World's Most Interesting GM |

The party continues to search the large hall, finding possibly interesting bits of soggy lore in several seemingly undecipherable languages, but nothing that looks like a bit of riddling poetry in written Sylvan. Suddenly there is a huge blast of water form the stairwell. The sudden monsoon stirs the water already in the room.

![]() |

Vina steers Lakadee down a side passage to see what is down that way. She looks back to Edwin, wondering if he will accompany her and Lakadee... she casts guidance on Lakadee and herself, before casting detect magic once more.

![]() |

"Trees grow back. Even when you don't want them to," Razka replies to Dawn's comment. "But once knowledge is lost it is often impossible to get back."
"Thank you, Milady," he says to Elianna when she gives him the scroll. His elegant bow is somewhat truncated by the fact that he doesn't want to get his face wet.
He rolls the scroll a bit tighter and tucks it into his bandolier next to his 3 wands.
As they slosh around, he follows Vina and Lakadee. It always pays for someone as squishy as he is to follow the people who can take a hit.

The World's Most Interesting GM |

The wing that Vina leads the party down has curiously rounded walls, and a lower ceiling that scrapes the tops of the bookshelves. Narrow walkways cut through the swamped archive. Paper float like Lily pads on the surface of a bog.

![]() |

"Trees only grow back if you let 'em." Dawn grumbles as she follows.
Great, someone thinks trees grow... on trees, and I still don't know how to pet this sapling.
"Anything interesting in here?"
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15

Edwin follows Vina. He collects every paper he can reach.
perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7

The World's Most Interesting GM |

In about 5 steps Edwin collects about 200 pounds of soggy paper. Lemme know how you want to handle encumberance. Are collecting anything in particular? Meanwhile, Lakadee looks like a soggy dirty, yellow yeti, or perhaps the only tree in a neighborhood with a lot of kids, and a lot of toilet paper around Halloween.
The water begins to rise as more and more water flushes down the stairwell from above.

![]() |

"Was any of them bits part of that there poem thing?" asks Bob as Edwin becomes frustrated. "Wasn't we s'pose ta collect all of 'em pieces?"
"I dun see no foxy thing either." he announces, peering around the large tree. "Wes best keep check bout the place. Where to next captain?"

The World's Most Interesting GM |

Vina steers Lakadee down a side passage to see what is down that way. She looks back to Edwin, wondering if he will accompany her and Lakadee... she casts guidance on Lakadee and herself, before casting detect magic once more.
After a slow wade-about Vina doesn't detect anything magical in this (the northeast) alcove.
