World's Most Interesting Overflow Archives (001) [PFS Standard 6-15] (Inactive)

Game Master Great Green God

Game Day VII session 1 begins Monday, August 13th.:
Beneath the Grand Lodge of Absalom lie the vaults, a series of storerooms and libraries that contain much of the Society’s findings from the past centuries. Cataloguing the sundry relics and texts takes time, and finds requiring closer study find their way to an extensive vault called the Overflow Archives. Soon after a pair of initiates sneaks into the archive and steals a few items on a dare, the complex inexplicably springs a leak. It is up to the PCs to investigate this strange phenomenon and put a stop to it before thousands of priceless documents are ruined forever.

Content in “The Overflow Archives” also contributes directly to the ongoing storyline of the Dark Archive faction.

"Don't blame the monkey, blame it's owners. They're the ones who taught it to be so rude." says the albatross magnanimously.

"Quite right. Quite right." says the owl still in pique. "Still spare the rod and all that. I should still take a switch to it until its rear turns red. That's what the old man did with me when I was shaver. And now look at me. Builds character it does."

"Right you lot, trousers down!" shouts the albatross smacking his spear's haft into his hand.

"It's for your own good really. Builds character. Look at me." says the owl sagely.

Razka stifles a groan. In his opinion, puns are the lowest form of comedy and comedy is the lowest form of entertainment.

Instead of commenting on that, he says "Our apologies. I don't know much about fishing, but I've heard that being still and quiet are important. Unfortunately, we have business here that can't wait so if you can just provide us some assistance we'll get out of your hai...feathers as quickly as possible."

"Do you happen to know where all this water is coming from and anything about what is causing it?"

"The cheek! Asking to see our scrolls! This is our fishing spot! Go catch your own in fish in the reference section! And may the thesaurus eat you!"

The albatross taps his ruffled friend on the shoulder and points meaningfully to a sign above that reads "Quiet in the Library".

"Now why don't you all make like your tree and leave us be?" whispers the albatross.

The two little fishermen seem completely uninterested in conversing with a party of such ruffians and clearly would like them to go away.

In other words the party is going to have to resort to dice rolls of some sort (sense motive, social interaction, combat, what have you) to get what you want out of them.

Bob:
Dawn and (especially) Elianna's efforts have turned the initially unfriendly fey friendly.

Dawn Verda wrote:

"Oh yes, the water. Well, there I was-" starts the owl.

"'We'." interjects the albatross.

"Toldja I was you man when it came to 'we'." he adds in an aside to the party.

"Yes, quite, 'we'. Well, there we were in the gut of the big sleeper, the fishiest fish there ever was. And being trapped in its guts we could tell." the owl begins again.

"So the three of us were just fishing as usual when we hears this sound like someone reciting a rhyme." says the albatross jumping in again.

"And whoosh, here we are!" finishes the owl in a loud rush to get his words in.

There's a sudden increase in the amount, and the force of the water falling from the mezzanine for a moment. Then after a moment it returns to the a more regular flow again.

"Shhh! Don't wake her!" hisses the albatross. "We don't want to be eaten again."

Both little beings look nervously up toward the mezzanine.

"Perhaps it would be wise to move away." says the owl quietly.

"But I just caught that scroll. And then there are those folios, and that big atlas, I got. This is a good spot. It's right between reference and fiction." says the albatross looking at their haul all hooked to a line, and floating raggedly in a half filled janitor's pail.

"As I remember it, I was the one that caught them." says the owl.

The two begin to argue over who caught what.

Score card for returning PCs - The characters have made the two bird-headed fey creatures friendlier than they were moments ago, and Vina and Lakadee have just encountered the apparent source of all the water pouring off the mezzanine.

A large, fat, tentacled, fish the size of a very large, fat, tentacled human sits on the damp floor with a look of deep concentration in its four visible eyes. It strains for a moment as if pushing out a stubborn bowel moment, and then out from beneath the ridges along its back and sides comes a huge gout of water. It's like squeezing a tremendous sponge. The big fish shakes off and begins to strain again.

PCs may make on Knowledge (Nature) check to identify the fish and open all the following spoilers that apply.

knowledge (nature) 15+:
The fish thing is a grodair, a magical, aquatic, extraplanar, beast native to the First World, and magical fishing holes in number of fairy tales.

knowledge (nature) 20+:
Grodairs intelligent aquatic creatures that carry their own water around within them. Their bodies contain extradimensional spaces that can hold near limitless amounts of water like an everfull mug or bag of holding. Like sponges they can absorb water from one place and expel it in another.

knowledge (nature) 25+:
Grodairs can drown whole valleys or expel concentrated blasts of pressurized water as a sort of defense mechanism. Often when they absorb water they will accidentally absorb other small objects as well.

Map updated, I moved Vina, and Lakadee to the mezzanine map where they are currently climbing the railing.

That can happen, otherwise curiosity at the intermittent waterfall would work too. Go ahead and move.

"At least up here, I can be drier, as long as I don't get in the stream," he mutters, taking care to step away from the flow of water.

I confess I clicked on the perception spoiler almost by accident before I even rolled, sorry. Between the site going down so much and 42 posts from the birds to sort through I totally lost track that we wanted something from them :(

1 person marked this as a favorite.
The Visual

The grodair burbles excitedly in its deep baritone way for a moment while waving a thick tentacle in the direction of the two elf magi. It continues on like that for a while splashing water from itself like a decorative fountain in a plaza before drawing one of its tentacles up to its mouth in thoughtful pose as if it is trying to remember something.

Sylvan:
"Yes! There's a sort of scallywag that I was to see to that looked a lot like you two," the fish monster says waving a tentacle in the direction of the two elf magi. "Except he had a pointy mouth too, with alternating upturned corners. Little smarty pants he was. He could wiggle his head fins better than most leg-people--completely uncivilized form of locomotion that, scissoring along in the air, it's undignified. He was quite the scissorer, that one. Scissored all over the place, he did with that pointy face with the upturned pointy bit up front. There should be a law. But I digress, He had on that stuff you get when you have legs. You know. Like anemones. Its on the tip of my tongue...."

Elianna:
No worries. I expect them to all be read by someone after all. In fact I kinda expect everyone to read them and just trust folks to be able to discern the difference between player, and character knowledge. The perception check is there for exactly your point though even if the party misses it now they have the chance to return to it later.

Razka has to admit, the water would be lovely, even relaxing, were it not for the fact that it was ruining invaluable books.
