Folks, this is all on me. I've hit a worst case scenario at work and I've been neglecting my hobbies as a result - which I'd like to think is the sensible thing to do :)
I am sorry for keeping you in the dark for so long.
Since the problems have not fully gone away, I'll need to improvise.
To get around our current slump, and to get back on track quickly, I'm going to end combat.
Instead, we will replace the battle with descriptive posts of our actions against the filthy traitors of the seventh knot. Feel free to attack as many of them as you like.
You could use your combat abilities in these descriptions - and feel free to roll, even, but I'm considering the battle won; hardly a surprise with two Erniyes on your side.
The Erinyes will clean up after you, and then I fear Caladwhen will ...intervene.
By the way, Cala, my other ninth knot asked me to compliment you after I told them of your absolutely disgusting plan.
IBElise Zadaria |
"They're not dead?! We've been tricked! Quickly - to the caves! We can take them from there!"
Elisa and her traitors fire their spells and arrows at Sindran and Grumblejack, while running towards the cave mouth.
They don't get far, though - because Talon, Oret are awaiting them there, cracking their knuckles in anticipation of a good fight. If anyone was looking at them, the grim look on their face might say : 'So, they wanted to play dirty? Then let's play dirty...'
show em, boys!
Cole Adams |
Cole continues to buff as the seventh moves toward the caves. Finally he uses his new speed to head down the horn and into the clearing looking back in on the seventh as they engage the nineth. He unleashes volley after volley, weakening and striking down members of the seventh. The battle only take a few moments to finish up.
Caladwhen |
Watching the events unfold unseen and invisible as the 7th moves towards the Horn, Caladwhen merely shakes her head Ambitious though they may be, they prove foolish; they should've fled entirely.
Sending a telepathic message to T'larryo, Caladwhen instructs "T'larryo, make sure Nariel knows that Grumblejack and Sindran may need attention."
With a devilish grin, Caladwhen whispers "Now for some fun." From on high, Caladwhen draws a vile from her belt pouch and pours out a viscous substance and speaks a single word in elven "Lenka." Suddenly the substance stops falling and hovers; Cala quickly waves her hands around the substance, but slows the motion down significantly until suddenly the viscous substance contorts and evaporates.
Casting Slow on the 7th, Will DC 22 to resist.
After casting slow, Caladwhen summon forth the Zombie nation from idle rest. I want the 7th completely surrounded by the dead, leaving nowhere to run (and if they fail slow, they can't outrun even the Zombies). Their instruction is not to engage yet, but simply to make escape by land nearly impossible...
Talon Dalkar |
The dark figure perches silently on a tree branch, watching the 7th approach. As the undead cut off any chance of escape and his ranged support shows their presence, Talon stands and lets himself be silhouetted for the 7th to see, having Oret stand beside him.
Talon's long hair whips in the wind as Oret's bald head stays still and his armor stays still as Oret's loose robes flap, creating an image of disjointed movement between the two silent figures of strength. Neither are men to waste words, so Talon grabs Oret with one muscled arm and jumps from the branch, weaving magic as he does and descending with frightening velocity.
Talon whips Oret into the back lines, stopping short himself and attacking the more armored opponents. Oret Between Cala and Talon's meddling time is on their side and Talon carves through them with blinding speed that seems unreal by the 7th's sluggishness. Spells fly out in a pattern of controlled chaos, one moment electricity and ice ripping through flesh and the next mirrored images and cascades of discoloration blurring the battlefield.
increddibelly |
As these events unfold, the sluggish cleric is quickly swarmed by Sindran's goblins and he is disarmed in but an instant, but Elise is covered by the ranger and the barbarian with surprising effectiveness. As a result of this well-rehearsed dance, her spells never stop flying, and she flings vile, bitter curses at her enemies, sapping your strength.
At one time, Talon is lured to step in a too close, and Dostan the massive fighter barks a quick command. As one, the seventh take a single step forward, and the fighters' greatsword and battleaxe carve into the flying black shape from either side, while Elise uses a wand of dark magic, to suck a grand portion of Talon's life force away.
(24 + 8 + 10 damage)
However, this manoeuvre allows Oret easy access to all three traitors, and I've never known him to leave an opportunity unused...
IBElise Zadaria |
"sh*t...!"
Elise's confident smirk slowly fades. Her eyes suddenly betray that she realizes she's not only been tricked, but that she's stepped into a well-prepared trap.
She springs into action, calling a command out to her bodyguards.
"cover me while I prepare to freeze them all!"
she begins to cast a spell - and contrary to the expectations of our casters, she doesn't spin any threads of Evocation - instead, she prepares to teleport away, abandoning her crew!
IBMelinoe or Tisaera |
While at the same time, Tisaera's whip curls around Elise's throat, leaving just enough room for the winter witch to breathe. Sometimes.
Tisaera smiles eerily towards Elise:
"Come now. Stay a little while...longer"
Caladwhen |
After the Furies move into apprehend the doomed Witch, and seeing her comrades well under control at the hands of Talon, Cole, Oret and Grumblejack, Caladwhen lands gracefully nearby. Approaching their prone captive, the elf maiden suddenly reappears right before her "Elise my dear, it would appear that you've been a very naughty girl."
Pulling her right glove off, Caladwhen calmly whispers in her native tongue "Aica umbar." Her bare hand suddenly glows with the same eery energy that lights the Horn itself. Placing her hand gently on Elise' face, Caladwhen quietly relishes the feeling of sapping the life from her enemy.
Caladwhen is going to use Vampiric Touch and Enervation to weaken Elise... and plans to keep her in this state until operation time.
Drawing the life force from Elise, Caladwhen takes a step back and draws forth the edict passed onto the 9th from the Cardinal. "I have to give you credit for your ambitiousness; nevertheless, it was foolish to think you would ever be able to succeed over us." Moving close to her ear, Caladwhen whispers malevolently "No, I was onto you from the very moment we met." Leaning back slowly from her prey, Caladwhen grins lightly and stares a moment at her before looking over towards the men of the 9th "When you have subdued the others, bring them here so they can here the Cardinal's verdict."
Glancing over at Elise once more out of the corner of her eyes, Caladwhen plainly adds "As the Furies indicated, your fate is eternal damnation, and as such, your time on this plane is near an end. While you remain with us though, we of the 9th intend to exact our retribution for this insolence; when I'm done with you and your comrades, you will beg for the sweet release of death."
Oret Stonechild |
Oret, seeing the greatsword-bearing brute, moves quickly, his feet a blur, barely touching the ground as he approaches the 7th knot. Dostan swings his massive blade, but as easily as Oret blocks it with his Crane Wing style, he might as well have been swinging through molasses on a cold winter's day.
Oret opens into a flurry of blows, landing two blows on Dostan, but the cleric, Titus, is there in an instant, healing the damage as quickly as Oret can cause it. Realizing he's going to get nowhere this way, Oret takes a step around the brute and lashes out at the cleric, scoring several good blows.
Tallus, however, fires two arrows at the monk; one embeds itself in his lower back, the other in his right thigh, but Oret continues on. Dostan steps around Oret, flanking him, and swings his greatsword once more. Oret's Crane Wing deflects the blow, but Titus lands a telling blow, setting Oret's head to ringing. Again, two arrows from the ranger embed themselves in Oret's stony flesh, and he stumbles briefly, but fights on.
Oret again brings his flurry of fists to bear against Dostan, hoping to outdamage the healing of the cleric. For a moment, it seems to work; Dostan pauses briefly, apparently taken aback by the ferocity of the attack. For a third time, two arrows fly from the surrounding forest and pierce Oret's body. Again, Titus swings, but Oret deflects it with his Crane Wing, knowing that a single blow at this point could easily mean death.
Dostan, the brute, realizes this as well. Seeing his opportunity, he swings his massive greatsword; again, it seems as if it's moving in slow motion, but for an entirely different reason. This time, his blade strikes true, cutting through flesh and bone, decapitating Oret and sending his head flying into the surrounding forest.
The monk's knees bend, and the body almost seems to kneel at the feet of the 7th knot before it topples lifelessly to the forest floor.
Sorry about this, guys - explanation incoming in the discussion thread...
IBMelinoe or Tisaera |
looking dispassionately at the head bouncing down the battlefield, Melinoe tightens her whip's grip on Zadaria's throat, leaving her gasping for air.
"You will speak when spoken to."
Tisaera steps in, bluntly reaching down Elise's open mouth.
"But no more - you annoy me."
A short, succulent tearing sound later, the front of Elise's perfectly white dress changes into a sea of red, as Tisaera throws the witch's tongue to one of the goblins.
"Pet! roast this. With garlick."
increddibelly |
And we're back! Elise is held and disabled by the Erinyes, but we still need to kill the remaining members of the 7th. Oh - No, wait! We can't kill them; our contract of vengeance dictates they are to be taken mostly alive. With all your skills aimed at killing, how do you propose to disable your remaining opponents?
Cole Adams |
I will take down the healer. If he is still standing send Grumblejack to subdue him.
Cole takes aim with his bow and lets loose a barage of arrows toward Titus.

Caladwhen |
Quietly observing the battle unfold, Caladwhen frowns as Oret's head is suddenly and unexpectedly parted from his shoulders. An unfortunate and unexpected setback; perhaps we have underestimated the 7th to a degree.
Slowly turning her head to face Elise upon hearing her insufferable gloating, Caladwhen smirks ever so slightly as Tisaera rips out her tongue "Finally, I don't have to listen to your incessant bravado Elise." Glancing over at the tongue, Caladwhen points it out to a nearby zombie "Collect that, we may yet need it." Looking over at Elise again, Caladwhen only grins and says nothing, leaving the imagination of her captive to wonder just why she would keep her dismembered tongue.
As far as incapacitating our foes, clearly we have Elise on the ropes since Caladwhen cast Vampiric Touch on her, which I still need to roll here. I also cast Slow on the group, so you'll need to see if they saved. My next action will be to summon some Skeletal Wolves to hamper their ability to run even further, and trip them. We'll need to do non-lethal damage to keep them alive.
Vampiric Touch on Elise earlier, Will DC 21: 4d6 ⇒ (2, 5, 1, 3) = 11
Náriel Lauric |
Moving quickly behind Cole and Talon, the scythe wielding priestess decides to take make her move at the remaining members of the 7th. Keeping back well enough from entering the melee fray, Elise grins devilishly as her eyes and open palms suddenly begin to burn with streams negative energy that suddenly leap out at members of the 7th.

holy epic rolls batman!
As the magic unfurls, seemingly from two directions at once, Tallus and Dostan steel themselves against the incoming barrage, shrugging off half the pain with clenched teeth.
Titus however is only paying attention to Elise's injuries, and he is rightly punished for his emotional distractions. As if glued to his spot, he turns slowly towards Náriel, and takes her streaming magic right between the eyes, the dark magic leaving an unnaturally nasty burn.
Spitting blood, the cleric flicks out a spell in response.
He's not doing too well. Titus casts Confusion on Talon, Will DC18
Sindran Eithe |
Casting Chain of Perdition from within the mist and behind Grumblejack. I have a range of 45 ft. and I can move the chain 30 ft. as a move action. The chain itself has a 10 ft. reach. I assume that's enough for my range.
Sindran moves to the edge of the mist, allowing him sight into the battle while hiding his position. He casts a spell, summoning a chain of force that attempts to wrap itself around Tallus.
Chain of Perdition (CL 8th, 8 rounds). I'll pick on Tallus because he's ranged.
Entangle {d20 + caster level + cha mod}: 1d20 + 8 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 8 + 7 = 31
Grumblejack himself charges into the battle on Sindran's orders, prepared to smack one of the 7th with his greatsword. Though he can't use all his strength, Grumblejack can still deliver a devastating blow and his target seems to be the distracted Titus. However, he doesn't seem to be used to holding his strength back and it shows.

Ouch Talon! That roll cost you 7 more rounds of confusion. Try not to kill anyone important, we need them ;) Without a map -sorry- we'll have to let the dice determine who is closest. The higher my roll, the worse the outcome will be for you.
nearest person: 1d20 ⇒ 7
I end up with a poor roll, so I'll help you. Dostan gets hurt; he's made of hitpoints and this will help subdue him.
From the other side of the carnage, Cole quickly turns the cleric into a pincushion. After just a few arrows, the cleric collapses into a heap.
int DC20: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Through tears of hurt, Elise throws Caladwhen a fearful, puzzled look. Gone is her arrogance, replaced by the instincts of a hunted animal. She has other things to worry about than figuring out what Caladwhen could possibly need her tongue for. (Deep inside, she thinks she needs it more!)
Sindran, nice to see you back as well :) great timing, too. However, if you'd had known Titus' status before you posted, wouldn't you prefer to say DOSTAN where you said TITUS? I'm assuming you would, correct me if you want to kill the cleric.

Grabbing three more arrows from his quiver, he nocks the first two for another barrage - ducking just in time to avoid a massive blinking chain, trying to grab him!
"...That wasn't here before...?"
increddibelly |
Seems like everyone has acted - We'll go to round 2.
Talon and GrumbleJack are surrounding Dostan for a +2 flanking bonus, even though Talon has slightly lost his bearings. Near the Goblin cave mouth, Cala and the Erinyes are playing around with Elise, although for the moment, our necromancer may be a little preoccupied with those stings in her back.
On the opposite side of the battle, Cole is aiming his bow. Sindran is outside the horn, somewhat to the side, hidden in obscuring mist. and from all sides, the Bane-Wog Goblins are closing in, their nasty grins discouraging everyone from retreating.
Talon Dalkar |
Behavior: 1d100 ⇒ 6
Talon wheels around to Titus. "You're going to pay for that one." He casts burst of speed on himself, then charges the caster while applying electricity to his blade.

Damage: 1d6 + 4 + 8d6 ⇒ (2) + 4 + (5, 5, 3, 6, 6, 6, 3, 5) = 45
I sure hope he survives that haha.
Caladwhen |
Ouch! Well, the good news is that I had 11 addition temporary hit points drained from Elise to suck up the damage... but that still leaves Caladwhen 15 hit points down, which puts her at 21/36.
Realizing only in the nick of time that her gloating has left her prone, Caladwhen moves awkwardly to avoid the arrows. While mostly successful, one of the arrows slices across midsection while the last lands firmly in her right shoulder. Crying out, Caladwhen ducks well privately cursing herself for her own arrogance.
Falling to her knees a moment, Caladwhen fires fierce but cooly calculated look as she regain her composure "He'll suffer unimaginably for that." Standing up, Caladwhen winces through the pain and whispers a dark incantation ""Belbau dosst dro fashka ulu ussa!" which summons forth dark energies in her right hand, which suddenly jets forward a bolt of negative energy towards Tallus.

Náriel Lauric |
Realizing suddenly that Caladwhen is in danger, Náriel retreats to provided aid. Running up beside her injured master with genuine concern and remorse, Náriel shakes her head "Mistress, I apologize profusely for my negligence; I should never have left your side."
Wasting little time, holds her left hand over Caladwhen's wound while gripping her a silver pendant crafted into the semblance of a fly with her right; speaking with a quiet urgency in elven, Náriel's left hand suddenly appears to glow with a shadowy radiance "Entulesse sina sarko."
Moving back towards Caladwhen, and casting Cure Moderate Wounds.

Cole lets loose a barrage at Titus
*Tallus!
Seriously, I don't know what Titus has done wrong to you guys, but he really can't get any more dead than he currently is at -50 hp :D
As a result of Caladwhen's and Cole's efforts, Tallus shrinks into a helpless pile.
For the record, Tallus has contracted the dying condition. This leaves only Dostan the barbarian upright.
increddibelly |
Dostan, in his rage, spins around with blinding speed, sending his greatsword ploughing through all the goblins surrounding him.
Within seconds, the area turns into a fountain of screaming goblins, bits of screaming goblin, goblin gut and Bane-Wog blood.
None of the goblins dares to approach him anymore.
His whirlwind attack does insta-kill damage to the goblins.
Sindran Eithe |
Uhh, yes. No more dead guys. Sindran hates making things more difficult.
Sindran patches himself up before heading into the battle.
Cure Serious Wounds: 3d8 + 8 ⇒ (6, 3, 4) + 8 = 21
That should put me back at full health.
Sindran quickly rallies the goblins to his side before any more of them are lost needlessly. "Goblins, to me!" He hurries to Tallus' side, already cursing about how much more effort they'd need to expend simply because the others couldn't remember simple instructions about not killing the 7th.
30' move towards Tallus. He's probably too far to make it, so next round I'll finish my move towards him and cast a cure. Stabilize is for sissies. Goblins will hopefully be around me ready to hold Tallus down. And make a meatshield between me and Dostan if it comes to it.
Meanwhile, the chain of force Sindran summoned continues in its attempt to neutralize Dostan.

Caladwhen |
Watching passively as Tallus' slumps to the ground, Caladwhen sighs "We need to keep them alive. Náriel, when we're done with Dostan, you'll need to tend to the wounded."
Glaring at the raging barbarian, Caladwhen shakes her head while pointing a finger in his direction "Nevae."
Casting Blindness Will DC 20 to resist on Dostan
Náriel Lauric |
With a quick nod to acknowledge Caladwhen's command, Náriel wheels around and observes the barbarian making quick work of so many goblins. Somewhat dejectedly, Náriel sighs and adds "That one is a menace m'lady."
Frowning, Náriel begins to whisper in a dark and ancient tongue, one others have heard Caladwhen utter numerous times before. After several refrains, a chill begins to creep on Dostan...
Náriel will cast Bestow Curse Will DC 17 on Dostan.
Cole Adams |
Well done Grublejack. After my assault you may be able to subdue him.
Cole lest loose another barage of arrows this time at the barbarian.

Dostan casually kicks Sindran's flying chain aside as he moves to escape the carnage.

will DC 17: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22
When Cala's magic takes hold of him, he screams and starts clawing at his eyes, fumbling around. In his blind (heh) rage, he doesn't even seem to notice the arrows or the black magic Náriel are firing at him.
Finally, Grumblejack's sword swings like a baseball bat, knocking the back of Dostan's skull, and he faceplants into the dirt. The Goblins bravely swarm the unconscious barbarian, stealing his boots and his dagger.
And he's down. One dead, three captured... Now for the disturbing bits...? Cala should probably tell us what she needs.
Caladwhen |
I’m away for a day trip, but I’ll post in full tonight; for now, here is Caladwhen’s end of encounter post.
Surveying the field of battle a moment, Caladwhen finally gives a curt nod before turning to face Elise. "So ends the 7th Knot. Noble effort Elise, short on execution though. " Glancing over at the fallen cabal, Caladwhen waves at some nearby Zombies "Take them to lab. Nariel, see to the deceased one.”
Just as the 7th is being escorted away, Caladwhen holds up her hand "Strip them of their belongings and valuables, they belong to us now. " With a slight smirk, Caladwhen looks over at Elise on last time "Restrain her, I don’t want any attempts at escape." With that, Caladwhen turns on her heel and returns to the Horn "Now the fun begins…"
Caladwhen |
Looking at the corpse of Titus in the laboratory, Caladwhen ponders to herself quietly a moment do we even need to bother? Heading over to her bookcase, she moves her finger across the index until arriving a tomb of Infernal Law.
Opening the book, she stares a moment at the index before looking to Nariel "I'd like to save us the time and expense of raising Titus. I suspect that given the language of our agreement, we can argue fifty-one percent of the entire 7th as opposed to each individual. While I'm researching here, prepare the operation table for the others."

IBElise Zadaria |
dragged dishonorably into the lab, Elise looks around. Only now she is coming to grips with just who she's up against.
Morpheus' old equipment is still here, and it proves your group's dedication to the cause. Her eyes rest for a moment on Arthepius the Alchemy Golem - he is also there, all finished up, standing there casually, waiting to be booted up, not minding being left alone.
I bet you totally forgot about the golem! You should probably use him. Did I tell you he shoots bombs? He does. It's awesome.
Zadaria shudders as she realises how naive she was - alas, it is now too late for such regrets. The penalty is due.
IBMelinoe or Tisaera |
Immensely pleased with some internal joke, Melinoe and Tisaera throw Elise towards a slab of stone in the lab.
Unfortunately, their aim is just a little off, and Elise's face slams onto the hard stone edge. Sighing with mock frustration, Melinoe and Tisaera roughly lift her up and fix her to the table.
"*sigh* can't you do anything right?"
Cole Adams |
Cole stands and watches amused by the situation.
Caladwhen, if I may I would like to stand and watch you work. I would be happy to offer any assitance as well that may help in the process. I must say I'm curious as to how she will turn out. Ah Elise if only you would have given up your selfish ambiitons and given yourself to our Dark lord. Where is your endless winter now? I bet Asmodeus has a nice warm spot waiting for your soul. He reflects for a moment before bursting into a form of maniacal laughter.
