DM Variel |
AOO for falcons as Jetro fires while in melee 2d20 ⇒ (10, 7) = 17+4 each for 2d4 ⇒ (2, 2) = 4
will saves for the 5 remaining rangers 5d20 ⇒ (11, 3, 12, 16, 16) = 58+1 each
The bottom 2 rangers make their save. Xanxan you can get a sneak attack in as they are blinded now. This is on a fresh ranger as the last dropped unconscious after firing his bow one last time. Go ahead and roll the extra damage. If not I will do so later at the round recap.
Jetro lands a critically placed arrow into the chest of the worg causing an eruption of blood to spring forth. The worg remains upright and still full of fight though.
Helgash |
Again Duardlara and Beck heal 5 from Life Link. Helgash takes 10, for a total of 20 damage this round.
LoH: 1d6 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 2 = 9
Helgash is now at 12hp.
Seeing Venja's spell taking effect, Helgash changes tactics, charging at the wolf, dropping his shield, and swinging with both hands
Charge to Q:10, flanking wolf with Sheelah.
Clod Iron Longsword Attack, Charge: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (13) + 12 = 25
Damage if it hits: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
DAng, I need a level, and POWER ATTACK! :/
--Status--
AC: 17
HP: 12/38
Spent LoH: 2/5
DM Variel |
Helgash I don't think you could charge with the trees in the way, however you are still able to hit without a problem.
Last of Top of Round 5 recap
Sheelah and Helgash finish what Jetro started this round by following up that perfectly placed arrow with a lethal combination of claw and blade. The 3 hits this round combine to send the giant wolf tumbling to the ground.
Xanxan continues to have great success at firing the crossbow and hits a ranger while he is blinded for 2d6 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4 extra damage as it finds a sweet spot behind the armor.
Beck remains on the ground unconscious while Lara continues to play dead hoping the rangers don't target her.
Bottom of Round 5
With the worg gone and the ranger injured harshly and blind he retreats carefully away from the sounds of combat. The two remaining blind ones retreat as well hoping the blindness wears off soon.
3d20 ⇒ (13, 11, 1) = 25+1 each
The 2 with full sight take aim at Sheelah hoping to bring down the cat.
4d20 ⇒ (4, 4, 14, 4) = 26+3 each for 4d8 ⇒ (4, 1, 8, 1) = 14+2 each
None of the rangers can shed the blindness effect nor hit their target this round.
The birds continue to peck at Jetro 2d20 ⇒ (8, 8) = 16 +5 each for 2d4 ⇒ (2, 1) = 3 and claw 4d20 ⇒ (9, 17, 5, 20) = 51 +6 each for 4d4 ⇒ (2, 4, 1, 1) = 8
threat confirm 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19 for 1d4 ⇒ 4
2 of the talons hit for a total of 9 damage as one of the talons rakes the face almost taking out an eye.
Good guys up with the tide turning in their favor now that the worg is down and the rangers are blind.
Venja |
Venja pulls out her last scroll of cure light wounds, and with the threat of the worg gone, reads the scroll and touches Beck with the healing power,
1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8
Beck Tavis |
Beck awakens and blinks again having passed out for a few moments.
Looking around he grins at the dead worg, and directs his sphere 30ft to S:15
Flaming sphere is dismissible so that would still be up, but Does Beck still have his Produce Flame still going? Cause I gots 3 more minutes left on it. If so I'll throw a ball of fire, but otherwise Beck stands up.
Sheelah sees that Beck's up and he directs her toward the rangers shooting her.
She charges with a vicious BITE! only has trees in one square and she ignores 5' of difficult terrain.
1d20 + 5 + 2 - 1 ⇒ (10) + 5 + 2 - 1 = 16
for 1d6 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 + 2 = 6 If we can go out the bottom of the map and there are no trees there Sheelah could get to [b]T:17[/dice] but if there are any squares of difficult terrain, the she can't and charges.
Helgash |
Variel, any chance we could get the link for the current combat up on top of the page as you used to do? :D
Helgash severs the life link with Duardlara, but maintains a firm connection with Beck.
Free Action: stopping Life link with Duardlara. Beck heals 5, Helgash takes 5, which puts him at 7hp
Undeterred by the wounds that spontaneously appear on his body, the Paladin moves towards the falconers, his body glowing with holy light.
Swift Action: LoH
LoH: 1d6 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 2 = 7
Sorry Jetro, those ranged attacks will tear us to bits. Helgash needs to get on their face... Variel, I don't think I can charge - that shadow in Q:11 is a tree, right? If I can, I will charge the one in T:16. If not, Helgash casts Cure Light Wounds on himself and moves to S:14.
Cold Iron Longsword, charge: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12<>+2 if flanking with Sheelah
Damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
CLW if I cannot charge: 1d8 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 + 2 = 11
--Status--
AC: 17 (15 if charging)
HP: 25 (14 if charging)/38
Spent LoH: 3/5
Spent spells: 1xlvl1
DM Variel |
Helgash, in order for you to charge you would have to go through a ball of fire. I am going to assume that you are not going to want to take the 3d6 fire and heal yourself instead.
Jetro steps away from the birds and kills one completely for their affront to him by hitting his face last time.
Venja heals Beck who sends the ball of flame towards the archers while throwing the flame that rests in his hands. 1d20 + 5 - 4 ⇒ (12) + 5 - 4 = 13 for 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9 fire damage. Sheelah rushes over and gets her teeth on one of the rangers doing solid damage with a bite that combined with the flame hit is just not enough to put him down. The ranger looks panic though and flees from the scene.
Lara gets up after playing dead and moves into a flanking position with Sheelah should the ranger keep his position.
Xanxan takes aim at the blind guy again and fire his crossbow 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 for 1d8 + 2d6 ⇒ (5) + (4, 3) = 12
will save for blindness 3d20 ⇒ (17, 9, 13) = 39+1
The rangers drop to the ground and plead for mercy stating that they were under orders from one of the winter witches and that the winter wolf was leading them this direction. Norgrimm threatened to tell the winter witches if we did not follow his orders. If they found out and it was true we would all be killed or worse. Please let us go and we swear we will never say we saw you at all.
Nice job guys, that was a hard fight and you pulled though thanks to a crit and some well timed healing.
Helgash |
That was a hard fight - there was a time there when Duardlara and Beck went down, then Sheelah [it turned out to be the GM wanting to cheat us :D], and it got me thinking we were going to bite it.
"We should just execute you were you stand, and let the Gods decide your fate" - Helgash roars, badly wounded like most of his companions - "I am sure the Inheritor would send you reeling to the deepest recesses of the Abyss itself" - the tiefling's eyes flare up menacingly.
"You stand a chance at repentance however - answer truthfully and it may be within your reach - why have you been sent to assassinate us? How did you know where to find us? And how would you recognize our group?"
Diplomacy?: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21
Venja |
Venja touches Helgash with her healing hex while he speaks with the rangers who attacked the party.
healing hex: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Helgash |
Thanks Venja :D
The tiefling puts a hand on Venja's shoulder in thanks for the healing - "You turned the tide of this confrontation - thank you" - he smiles.
10 points healed due to Fey Foundling.
DM Variel |
The rangers tremble while giving you the best answers they know.
We were sent this direction from Whitethrone as there has not been a report from the Pale Tower. We were told to head directly southeast and keep an eye for any group of travelers armed for combat. Our falcons were to harass those with ranged abilities while we provided covering fire for Norgrimm. It was he that was to decide who to attack and kill. Now that he is dead we are willing to surrender if you spare our lives.
Helgash and anyone else you believe that they are telling the truth as they stopped fighting after the worg went down. Their tactics are believable as ll as they never attacked a downed individual and only attacked those that Norgrimm was engaged with outside of Xanxan the first round as he surprised them.
Venja |
When Jetro rejoins the rest of the party, Venja touches him on the arm and passes on her healing hex to him as well...
healing hex on Jetro: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Venja |
After Jetro is healed, she turns her attention to Sheelah, who was also wounded and touches the cat with her hair, not wanting to invade her personal space too closely.]
healing hex on Sheelah: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Venja blushes slightly when Helgash thanks her for her actions in combat and nods to acknowledge his thanks, but doesn't want to interrupt the rangers so says nothing...
Venja |
She finally leans close to Helgash and whispers to him, "If they come from Whitethrone, perhaps a condition of their free release would be some information about what we might face there and how to enter the town safely."
Venja |
Venja flashes Jetro a smile and nods, whispers "Glad to help, sorry it can't be more." Despite the fact that she whispered very softly, he heard her clearly (via message spell, so as not to interrupt the conversation with the rangers.)
Duardlara Frostborn |
Duardlara sits up in the snow once she realizes the worg has fallen, but she doesn't stand. Looking the worse for wear, she stays on the ground, cleaning her weapons, putting them away, then pulling her knees up to her chest. Wrapping her arms around them, she lays her head on her knees and watches and listens.
Quite a week, glad to be back...
Venja |
wb
Venja looks to the rangers for their response to Beck... if they have papers of their own, and aren't willing to trade or sell them, maybe they can loan them long enough for someone with linguistics skill to make some decent facsimiles for us all.
DM Variel |
Eqch individual needs his or her own set of papers to be allowed into the city proper. They detail the reason for your visit and your standing while you are there. Our papers would do you no good as we are soldiers and would be escorted immediately to our commander for report. He would then recognize you as infiltrators and have you summarily executed on the spot. I do not know how you would come about getting inside the city.
Y do remember though that Nadya said to find her uncle and that he might be able to help you out in getting inside the city.
Venja |
did she say exactly where and how to find her uncle? Is he outside the city?
Venja |
I don't recall, but I don't think so.. give me a minute to scroll back and see
Venja |
okay, re-read the whole combat and no I didn't... so here goes...
Seeing D'Lara still in need of healing, Venja touches her gently and heals her with a hex.
healing hex: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Duardlara Frostborn |
I didn't see it, either, but it's your choice, not mine, anyway. Thanks!
The elven girl gives the witch a grateful smile, but says nothing, listening to the conversation.
DM Variel |
On the falconers you so sets of...
potions of cure light wounds (x2) studded leather, composite longbow (+2 Str) with 14 arrows, longsword, cold-weather gear, falconry gauntlet, snowshoes, 6 gp
Detecting magic reveals none of the items as magical except the potions however the worg glows mysteriously.
Some advanced winter wolves have a coat that if skinned properly (survival check dc 25) bestow upon its wearer magical properties.
This snow-white fur pelt of a winter wolf can be worn over the shoulders as a cloak. The pelt functions as furs, granting its wearer a +2 bonus on Fortitude saves to resist cold weather. The wearer can, as a standard action, transform into a Large winter wolf as if using beast shape IV. In certain
special locations where winter wolves have the ability to take human form, such as the Howlings district of Whitethrone or the town of Redtooth, the wearer of a rimepelt in wolf form can take human form as winter wolves do, appearing as a white haired, blue-eyed human. In either wolf or human form, the wearer of a rimepelt smells like a winterwolf to other winter wolves and creatures with the scent ability. When the wearer returns to his normal form, or after 2 hours have elapsed, the rimepelt becomes a mundane winter wolf pelt.
Very rarely, a properly skinned winter wolf pelt manifests the properties of a rimepelt without requiring additional enchantment. A winter wolf whose pelt has such potential usually manifests some telltale physical attribute, such as heterochromatic eyes. Creating a rimepelt from such a rare creature requires a successful DC 25 Profession (hunter) or Survival check. Taking 20 is not allowed in this situation, and a failed check results in the pelt being utterly ruined for any use.

Duardlara Frostborn |
Still very quiet, Duardlara stands up, obviously a bit sore, and looks at the men's gear.
Knowledge (arcana: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (1) + 11 = 12
She notes the glow on the worg when she detects magic, but her mind is elsewhere and she assumes it is simply because of the creature's nature and that it will fade with time.
Venja |
know arcane: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28
Venja informs the others as to the uses of the Winterwolf pelt. read the spoiler everyone
"Beck, maybe you can render it useful while skinning the beast?"
Beck Tavis |
Beck listens as Venja describes the powers of the RimePelt, and Beck nods. "It'll be a tougher skinnin that what i been done before, but I'm prtty sure i can cut this wolf up. And there's plenty o' meat on it too!
Survival: 1d20 + 14 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 14 + 2 = 29 the latter +2 is if the winter archetype works for this
Beck slices open the wolf, and cuts away the skin, expertly carving as not to damage the pelt or weaken it's magical properties. Is the ability to turn into a wolf a Once ever power, or just the ability to turn into a human?
Xan, when we gots the time yea ken use the pelt ta make a right fine and fancy cloak, eh?" beck says as he moves to butcher the animal, checking his pack for salts to make sure he can keep the meat from spoiling. Or are we not supposed to eat intelligent creatures... I'm not sure alignment-wise since it's an animal and it's not cool to kill an animal and not eat it, but then again it's a magical beast... im not sure on proper druidic protocol out of character. and if it's not ok for us, can Sheelah at least eat it?
Venja |
it's also a carnivore and they don't make good eating in general
"It may be an animal, Beck, but it was an intelligent one, and I for one won't eat any of it." Venja looks a bit green at the idea of doing so.
DM Variel |
As it is a magical beast you are not held to stripping it for meat Beck. Also Venja is correct it would taste horrible and tough. You do manage to skin it easily producing a fully functional rimepelt. It is usable only once to turn into a winter wolf before it reverts to a normal winter cloak.
Anything else before you move on? If nothing by tonight I will update myself moving on.
DM Variel |
The rangers are released with only their daggers on them to make it back to their homes as they can. The falcons fly around the area under orders from their handlers to leave them alone to seek food. One of the rangers, a single man with no family goes off in a different direction to seek his living elsewhere. Hopefully you will never have to see them again and they will all be glad that if they never see you either. They say that while out searching Norgrimm advanced on his own. When they caught up to him he was found dead and skinned. No signs of the group were visible and so they returned home with one of their men having stolen everything in the middle of the night to run away.
Really easy encounter so skipping it.
The next day the group stumbles upon an old church of Desna by a ruined village. Stepping in to explore the church visions assault you of children being burnt alive to be fed to Baba Yaga's troll and giant army 1400 years ago while corrupted priests laughed and prayed to Baba Yaga. The haunt fills everyone with despair while 2 huecuvas attack. The party easily repels them and searches the church. Hidden behind a stone in one of the alcoves you find a scroll of hold person, scroll of resist energy cold CL 5ft, a scroll of consecrate (which was used to clear the haunt and put the children's souls to rest), an engraved scroll case that is water tight worth 150gp, a magic belt, a magic ring and 4 fire opals worth 250gp each.
This is a bladed belt
Ring of feather falling
DM Variel |
Moving on...
The tiny village of Ellspin lies on the route to Whitethrone. Choosing to make a pass through town rather than try and skirt the edge of it and raise suspicion you come to a solitary wooden house ont ehoutskirts of town.A thin column of smoke rises from the chimney but there is no other sign of life from within and the window shutters are pulled closed. Fifteen feet in front of the homestead a humanoid shape like facedown in the snow-the snow dyed red with blood.
There are 2 sets of tracks in the snow that lead towards the house, 1 to the humanoid and the other abruptly ends near the body and disappears.
Duardlara Frostborn |
Duardlara remains very quiet as the party continues. Can she claim some of the CLW potions to heal up now and have some for future calamaties?
She studies the magic belt and ring carefully in the church.
Spellcraft to identify belt DC 16: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26
Spellcraft to identify ring DC 16: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27
She confers with Venja to confirm her analysis and then shares her conclusions with the others. First successful rolls all night, I think. Figures I would beat the DC by 10 when I only need a 3. I know, some elves are never happy.
Duardlara Frostborn |
Without looking directly at Helgash or Beck, she quietly adds, "If it helps, I'm quite sure there is no taint on either of these."
Venja |
spellcraft belt: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14
spellcraft ring: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
Venja isn't sure about the belt, but agrees with D'Lara on the ring. (gah, what awful rolls)
-----
"Beck, what do you make of the footprints in the snow?"
Xanxan Gimblewabe |
Earlier
Xan, when we gots the time yea ken use the pelt ta make a right fine and fancy cloak, eh?" beck says as he moves to butcher the animal
Xanxan nods vigorously, "Sure thing."
..........
The next few days, he finds himself working on it in what spare time they have
Craft clothing: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (19) + 9 = 28
DM Variel |
Anyone doing anything in particular or is it safe to assume that you approach the body?
Xanxan you are able to make the cloak look quite fashionable. As you work it a mysterious thing happens. It changes size in your hands to fit a small person and while Beck holds it for more curing it grows larger to fit a medium sized person.
Plus happy 2000 post. everyone gets a +1 to 1 die roll, yes including me for this book which ends with you getting to level 7 btw.
