Trouble in Sembia (Inactive)

Game Master EltonJ

Orcs invade Sembia looking for a home to call their own. This campaign is basically a war story. Will the heroes succeed, or will the orcs win?

I am ready with the Hero I would like to play the most on the ideas. if you think one of those others would work better let me know. because I'm open to all of them. but because I don't know where the campaign is going I thought this one would be the best. still finishing some parts.

The campaign is an epic war story. Slaying orcs all the way as orcs invade Sembia. Anything could happen, and we could go for a while playing the game. The campaign stops when the group breaks the orcs' will to conquer the nation. Since it happens before the Time of Troubles, the Time of Troubles could be a factor, since all the gods were sent down. So you could, later on, encounter Gruumsh One-eye. As a might.

Here is Cedryk's avatar and profile...just need to add some fluff to round him out!! Really looking forward to this...should be fun with all the cool characters we have so far!!

Yes. I'm only going to pick 4-6, and so far it's hard.

So, I'm interested in this, and I'm putting together a Skald.
I'm not sure if that's on the allowed list or not, thought I'd check first.

I'll make an exception if you can come up with a compelling background.

Liberty's Edge

I'll throw my hat into the ring. I wrote up a character for a campaign that just fell apart and I've been itching to play him. I can pm you all the details but he's a samurai-esc paladin character.

Here's a first cut at my human cavalier; still need to build mount (Horse), round out equipment, and pick Tactician feat, but let me know if any issues stand out.

I mention her family's wealth, but I assume they're heavily leveraged with various business ventures around Sembia, so she has access to contacts ("friend in every city" trait), but not cash.

Danyelle Holioke:

Background
Younger daughter of a Yhaunn-based merchant family, Dany is loyal to her family, but has not been groomed for management of the family businesses the way her eldest siblings and cousins have been. Instead, she has been trained for military service, expected to represent the clan as an officer in Yhaunn’s guard or the Sembian army. Suffering some wanderlust, though, she takes every excuse to leave town on some excuse or another, and has visited all the larger cities and many a small town across Sembia in this way.

She’s thus found herself in Surd, taking reports for the insurance from a family-backed fishing ship damaged in a storm, but having completed this task, she would leap at the opportunity to do something less….bureaucratic.

Personality
Dany suffers a certain amount of snobbishness from her upbringing among the moderately rich; while quick to make friends and eager to help others, she can come off as clueless to the actual needs of common folk.

Feats
1: Combat Reflexes: You may make a number of additional attacks of opportunity per round equal to your Dexterity bonus. With this feat, you may also make attacks of opportunity while flat-footed.

Traits
* Friend in Every Town: You gain a +1 trait bonus on all Knowledge (local) checks and Diplomacychecks. Knowledge (Local) is always a class skill for you.
* Armor Expert: When you wear armor of any sort, reduce that suit’s armor check penalty by 1, to a minimum check penalty of 0

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Racial abilities:
* Base Speed: 30 feet.
* Eye for Talent: Humans have great intuition for hidden potential. They gain a +2 racial bonus on Sense Motive checks. In addition, when they acquire an animal companion, bonded mount, cohort, or familiar, that creature gains a +2 bonus to one ability score of the character’s choice. This racial trait replaces the bonus feat trait.
* Skilled: Humans gain an additional skill rank at first level and one additional rank whenever they gain a level.

Class abilities:
* Weapon and Armor Proficiencies: Cavaliers are proficient with all simple and martial weapons, with all types of armor (heavy, light, and medium) and with shields (except tower shields).
* Challenge: Once per day, a cavalier can challenge a foe to combat. As a swift action, the cavalier chooses one target within sight to challenge. The cavalier’s melee attacks deal extra damage whenever the attacks are made against the target of his challenge. This extra damage is equal to the cavalier’s level. The cavalier can use this ability once per day at 1st level, plus one additional time per day for every three levels beyond 1st, to a maximum of seven times per day at 19th level. Challenging a foe requires much of the cavalier’s concentration. The cavalier takes a –2 penalty to his Armor Class, except against attacks made by the target of his challenge. The challenge remains in effect until the target is dead or unconscious or until the combat ends. Each cavalier’s challenge also includes another effect which is listed in the section describing the cavalier’s order.
* Mount: A cavalier gains the service of a loyal and trusty steed to carry him into battle. This mount functions as a druid’s animal companion, using the cavalier’s level as his effective druid level. The creature must be one that he is capable of riding and is suitable as a mount. A cavalier does not take an armor check penalty on Ride checks while riding his mount. The mount is always considered combat trained and begins play with Light Armor Proficiency as a bonus feat. A cavalier’s mount does not gain the share spells special ability.
* Order: Order of the Dragon
** Edicts: The cavalier must remain loyal to his allies and must always work to further the aims of the group. He must protect his allies from harm and defend their honor when called into doubt.
** Challenge: Whenever an order of the dragon cavalier issues a challenge, his allies receive a +1 circumstance bonus on melee attack rolls against the target of his challenge whenever he is threatening the target. This bonus increases by +1 for every four levels the cavalier possesses.
** Skills: An order of the dragon cavalier adds Perception (Wis) and Survival (Wis) to his list of class skills. In addition, whenever an order of the dragon cavalier uses Survival to provide food and water for his allies or to protect his allies from harsh weather, he receives a bonus on the check equal to 1/2 his cavalier level (minimum +1).
* At 1st level, a cavalier receives a teamwork feat as a bonus feat. He must meet the prerequisites for this feat. As a standard action, the cavalier can grant this feat to all allies within 30 feet who can see and hear him. Allies retain the use of this bonus feat for 3 rounds plus 1 round for every two levels the cavalier possesses. Allies do not need to meet the prerequisites of these bonus feats. The cavalier can use this ability once per day at 1st level, plus one additional time per day at 5th level and for every 5 levels thereafter.
* Favored Class Bonus (Human Cavalier): Add +¼ to the cavalier’s banner bonus (1st level applied)

Okay, so far ---
Characters made:

  • Mosely Terrahap -- halfling ranger; Jesse Hienig
  • Zdravko -- human brain splattering fighter; mishima
  • Cedryk -- Ffolk druid with a leshy companion; Daniel Stewart.
  • Danyelle Holioke -- Human cavalier of the Order of the Dragon; Murph.
  • Raynor Black's unnamed human Samurai-esc. Paladin.

Characters still in concept stage:

  • LCF's halfling bard with a chip on his shoulder for orcs, doing a worldwalk without a halfling community to return to. Probably not from Lurien.
  • Teiidae's druid, being a melee combatant and crushing and cleaving through orc skulls.
  • Critzible's fire(?) elementalist.
  • Boggbear's Skald.
  • Elaith Craulnober -- DarkWingD's iconic character from a Forgotten Realms novel.

Lurien is where strongheart are from lol. He's from a nomad community in the north.

Well, then here is the finished Skald, with background and all.

Scroll Blade:A scrollmaster can wield any paper, parchment, or cloth scroll as if it were a melee weapon. In the hands of the Wizard, the scroll acts as a short sword with an enhancement bonus equal to 1/2 the level of the highest-level Wizard spell on the scroll; a scroll with only a cantrip or 1st-level spell on it counts as a masterwork short sword. The scrollmaster is proficient in this weapon, and feats and abilities that affect short swords (such as Weapon Focus) apply to this weapon. A scrollmaster cannot wield two scrollblades at the same time.
Activating this ability is a free action. A scroll blade only retains its abilities in the hands of the scrollmaster. The scroll blade has hardness 0 and hit points equal to the highest-level Wizard spell on the scroll. Each successful hit by the scroll blade reduces its hit points by 1; this damage cannot be repaired, but does not affect casting from the scroll. When its hit points reach 0, the scroll is destroyed. If a scroll contains a spell with a metamagic feat, this ability uses the original spell level of the spell (a scroll of empowered fireball counts as a 3rd-level spell).
At 3rd level, when using a 4th-level or higher Wizard scroll as a scroll blade, the scrollmaster can choose to reduce its enhancement bonus by 1 (minimum +1 enhancement bonus) to treat it as a reach weapon. For example, he could use a scroll of charm monster (a 4th-level Wizard spell) as either a +2 short sword or a +1 short sword with reach.
At 5th level, when using a 4th-level or higher Wizard scroll as a scroll blade, the scrollmaster can choose to reduce its enhancement bonus (to a minimum of a +1 enhancement bonus) to give any of the following weapon properties: defending, frost, icy burst, keen, ki focus, shock, shocking burst, speed. Adding any of these properties consumes an amount of enhancement bonus equal to the property’s cost. The scrollmaster must know the prerequisite spell or spells to craft the weapon property in question (for example, he must know haste to be able to give his scroll blade the speed property).
This ability replaces the Wizard’s arcane bond

Scroll Shield:A scrollmaster can wield any paper, parchment, or cloth scroll as if it were a light wooden shield. In the hands of the Wizard, the scroll grants a +1 shield bonus with an enhancement bonus equal to 1/2 the level of the highest-level Wizard spell on the scroll; a scroll with only a cantrip or 1st-level spell counts as a masterwork light shield sword. The scroll shield has no armor check penalty, arcane spell failure chance, or maximum Dexterity bonus. The scrollmaster is considered proficient in this shield. A scrollmaster can use a scrollblade in one hand and a scroll shield in the other hand.
Activating this ability is a free action. A scroll shield only retains its abilities in the hands of the scrollmaster. The scroll shield has hardness 0 and hit points equal to the highest-level Wizard spell on the scroll. Each successful attack roll against the Wizard reduces the scroll shield’s hit points by 1; this damage cannot be repaired, but does not affect casting from the scroll. When its hit points reach 0, the scroll is destroyed.
At 5th level, when using a 3rd-level or higher Wizard scroll as a scroll shield, the scrollmaster can choose to reduce its enhancement bonus (to a minimum of a +1 enhancement bonus) to give it any of the following shield properties: ghost touch, light fortification, moderate fortification. Adding any of these properties consumes an amount of bonus equal to the property’s cost (see Table 15–5: Shield Special Abilities in the Core Rulebook). The scrollmaster must know the prerequisite spell or spells to craft the shield property in question (for example, he must know limited wish to be able to give his scroll shield the fortification property).
If a scroll contains a spell with a metamagic feat, this ability uses the original spell level of the spell (a scroll of empowered fireball counts as a 3rd-level spell).

Background:

He was student of this famous warlord in Wa, but the warlord was betrayed by one of his generals and everyone loyal to the warlord was killed. Heishiro managed to escape with his masters sword and stow away on a boat despite being hit by an arrow while escaping. He was found by the ships crew after he passed out from blood loss but not knowing that he was important in any way they decided to nurse him back to health and drop him off at an orphanage in Selgaunt. His masters sword was sold to a wealthy collector to pay for some of his bills. When Heishiro turned 16 he went to the collector and asked that his masters sword be returned, but of course a sword crafted for a master isn't cheap, so Heishiro ended up as a guard for caravans of goods to "work off his debts". Of course the collector never intended to return the sword, but after being the soul survivor of an attack on a shipment of gold the collector decided his debt had been paid, as Heishiro could have just as easily pointed the collectors caravan the other direction and stolen all his gold. After working for the collector for two years Heishiro was glad to be free of him and set off to make a name for himself and find a home of some sort in this foreign land. Heishiro is slow to trust but loyal to his friends, honorable, charitable, sarcastic, and pretty introverted.

I like the idea that Heishiro is still attempting to follow the Path of Enlightenment but since he has not been in a land that follows it for so long it's sort of been eroded and changed a bit as he's been exposed to various things throughout the years. (I combined bits of the code of Shizuru and the Path of Enlightenment. I looked into the worship of Shar but it doesn't really mesh)

Path of Enlightenment:

My blade will be as steady as the sun and my training will be as consistent; I shall respect what I have mastered and seek to impart this training to others.

I will honor that which has gone before me. For the past is eternal.

My personal honor reflects on my ancestors and my liege; I will conscientiously maintain my reputation for the sake of theirs, even on the battlefield.

Engage in no base thing, nor commit murder, for to strike another in the name of anger is not li.

As I respect the Emperor of Heaven, so will I respect my sworn liege.

Do honor to those you must rule, for under the eye of Heaven, they are your equals. Be fair to those you rule

Any chance we can use feat tax rules in this game?

Edit: Working on my backstory and my character ended up evolving into a sort of melee tank/support. Feat taxes would let him attack with dexterity. Otherwise, he's not hitting much.

Sorry about the delay. I'm actually trying to speed the process up compared to usual by using a Mythweavers sheet and linking it instead of my usual make-my-own-sheet-with-tons-of-[stuffinbrackets]-that-takes-forever.

I'm trying to find them in the PRD, but with no success. So, maybe. As soon as I can read on that little detail, I can rule yes or no.

These are the rules I use for my games, but there are a few other systems that get used.

I would be all for using the feat tax rules.

Oh, those. The complaint about feat taxes and the ways to fix them. I read them before. I don't agree with all of the changes.

"I'm not too late, am I? No. No. Fashionably late, of course, but never actually. I'm always right on time."

The handsome half-elf winks, and flashes a winning smile. "Well of course, you're going to want me to come along. Why? Well, for one, I mean, someone is going to have to do the talking, when the swords aren't out yet, and we're up to our knees in wyvern crap. Trust me, I have a silver tongue. Or, so I've been told." His lecherous double entendre is obvious, but the arrogance of the young man seems somehow like a quaint charm in your eyes, even though you know, you know he's put himself on quite a pedestal.

"And I'm a mage of no small talent, if that matters. Hm? Where did I study at? That's hilarious. You poor thing, you needed to learn magic? No, sweetheart, I just have a gift. Or two. Or ten, really. But that's...that's cute. How you look it all up in your book every morning. But don't worry, it's all part of your charm. Now about my pay..."

I'll just build my character without then. He'll be plenty useful as a healer/buffer, even if he doesn't hit very often.

I have a last minute submission. A cleric of Helm. I chose domains based on the Wikipedia entry for Helm. I could change them pretty easily if you so desire, EltonJ.

Updated Danyelle (tactician feat + minor equipment), and mount, Belladonna, below.

"Why, thank you! Yes, she is a lovely horse, isn't she? Found her in Impiltur, and just had to bring her home. Not to knock Sembian stock -- my family owns a breeding ranch in Kulta, after all! -- but Bella and I had a bond from the moment we saw each other. She's smart as a whip, too: I swear she can understand what we're saying -- don't let it go to your head, sweetie!"

In case it is not painfully obvious, Vallegrath is my sorcerer submission. :-D

Okay, so far we have some Characters made:

  • Mosely Terrahap -- halfling ranger; Jesse Hienig
  • Zdravko -- human brain splattering fighter; mishima
  • Cedryk -- Ffolk druid with a leshy companion; Daniel Stewart.
  • Danyelle Holioke -- Human cavalier of the Order of the Dragon; Murph.
  • Anastacia Stormwing -- Cleric of Helm; Waterhammer.
  • Elaith Craulnober -- Elvish rogue from Evermeet; DarkWingD.
  • Bregor Rowain -- Skald of Sembia; Boggbear.
  • Elvandra Orliun -- air elementalist and Scrollmaster; Critzible.
  • Heishiro Kano -- Paladin from Wa; Raynor Black.
  • Vallegrath -- sorcerer; The Vagrant Erudite.

That's ten submissions so far, waiting on the next two below.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

"Elaith Craulnober? Think I heard about you, didn't someone intend to write about about you? Some Elaine Cunningham?
Hope you got your moneys worth out of that one, she's as cunning as her name indicates."

Elvandra Orliuns' Background:
Born to the Orliun family in Selgaunt, Elvandra was the youngest of the siblings and the only daughter. Her birth was in a Carriage during a tumultuous storm. Her mother preserved but Elvandra was forever changed. Her body didn't feel much from electrical shocks as she learned later in her life. She, however, was sickly as a child, her skin tone was milky white and her eyes incredibly blue and seemed to crackle with power. Her hair was an unnatural white.

As a child, she was smart and had an aptitude for magic as she learned a few cantrips on her own. Her parents seeing her talents and needing to have a more practical presence in the Dales sent Elvandra and her second oldest brother Lucian to Tasseldale. In Tasseldale Elvandra began learning magic under the tutelage of the sage-for-hire THeremondivyr. From him, she learned a variety of magic, including the ability to make scrolls into weapons and shields. SOmething she read from an old worn War Wizard manual. As for her focus, she found the Elemental power of Air more to her liking. So Theremondivyr encouraged her to grow in this aspect where she began to prosper.

Strange enough the woman learned magic fast becoming a powerful caster in her own right. In doing so she has learned that her true power is magic, unlike the rest of her family, she excelled here, manipulating the arcane forces of her own will. Eventually, she was sent back to her parents, and they shipped her off to a more remote part of Sembia to watch over one of her family's' many financial endeavors. it is here she began to hear tell of orcs on the move. Sensing a change in the winds Elvandra begins to look into all the rumors and with more kernels of truth coming through she begins a slow campaign to get others on board for the oncoming orc horde.

Background, personality, and appearance have all been added to this avatar.

Looks like everyone is getting ready. Five more hours. :D If this doesn't work out, I can do an all drow campaign. I have hundreds of many more ideas to try out as well. But I think this campaign will work out.

I ended up having more on my plate than I expected in terms of games, so it would be irresponsible for me to submit to another game at this point. It looks like you have plenty of submissions to build a reasonable group from so I will withdraw.

Thanks for your time and have a good game, guys!

You too.

40 minutes before this thing ends, and I have an idea for an all dark elf campaign. I'll just tuck those thoughts to the back of my mind, allthough the Dwarves Deep campaign is having a lot of success.

Hmm. Lets see where this goes first.

EDIT: And now submissions are now closed. I'll be deciding on who gets the cut by the 20th. Fun times all.

Dark elf campaign? I would be down for that as well, especially if also from the time of the Grey Box. And/or using 5e rules.

Probably. I haven't run a 5e game in a long time.

All of these submissions are really good. Too bad I know who is going to be playing already. :) Stay tuned for more updates.

Cool :-D

Sense motive! :)
