The dwarves live on or near the surface; many have integrated into human cities, while a few remaining dwarven mountain strongholds and cave mines controlled by dwarves are around.

While there may indeed be a clan of dwarves that shun the sunlit world of the humans, they are more likely to live in one of these mountain caves than anywhere in the "underdark".

I've given what background the adventure gives. Obviously, it is left somewhat vague so that it can be ported into multiple worlds. Once we've settled some more about the patron, I'll embellish things so people can flush out their characters before the due date.

One bit of advice for traveling the "underdark": pack a lunch. You may be days traveling in trackless, lifeless cave systems where even survival skill will do you no good for procuring food (luckily water is not as much of an issue as the caves are moist.)

I haven't got all my gear anyway since I don't know what masterwork weapon I'll be getting until I figure out what deities are allowed so off to the grocers, thanks :)

Hmmmmm guess I'll sell my rations and start making proper meal kits then.

I hope you realize that with a combination of good fort saves against poison, food scarcity, and a supply of exotic meat thigns are going to get very weird right?

How do you think Roper tastes?

you think we could acquire a taste for it? Underdark sushi of sorts. Chop up some tentacles. Bon Appetite.

A little stringy ....

Real eatins in them cave fisher claws. Nice and meaty that is roasted over a small fire and spritzed with cave lemon.

I figured that at minimum 10 days of food would be necessary to begin a trek into the Underdark. Also, question to the GM, will the dwarves be aware of the Dark Elves prior to the AP beginning or are they a threat that becomes evident later on?

Makes a difference in Garnult's story.

Have always wanted to make a Dwarven Oracle of Stone (Deaf curse, stone deaf...hee hee hee)

Not the first oracle, but i'll throw my mining hat in the ring...
Attribute #1: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 5) + 6 = 13
Attribute #2: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 6) + 6 = 14
Attribute #3: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (3, 6) + 6 = 15
Attribute #4: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 6) + 6 = 13

Ability Score Trait:
Trickster and Singer:
Dwarves have a reputation as being a stolid, humorless people. But there are few dwarves, usually fine singers and storytellers, who are given leeway for being charismatic and quick of hand and wit. Of course, these brash tricksters are still often in trouble,
Benefit: +2 Charisma, +2 Dexterity, -2 Wisdom

Stats:
Str:13
Dex:16
Con:15
Int:8
Wis:11
Cha:20

Traits:
Cast Iron Stomach(Campaign)-
There is little you cannot gain sustenance from.
Benefit: +2 trait bonus versus ingested poisons or drugs and “get along in the wild” survival skill rolls that are trying to find food for you receive a +2 bonus.
Trait #2-forthcoming

Patron Vote:
forthcoming

Oracle Curse:
Deaf-You cannot hear and suffer all of the usual penalties for being deafened. You cast all of your spells as if they were modified by the Silent Spell feat. This does not increase their level or casting time.

At 5th level, you receive a +3 competence bonus on Perception checks that do not rely upon hearing, and the initiative penalty for being deaf is reduced to –2.

At 10th level, you gain scent and you do not suffer any penalty on initiative checks due to being deaf.

At 15th level, you gain tremorsense out to a range of 30 feet.

A deafened character cannot hear. He takes a –4 penalty on initiative checks, automatically fails Perception checks based on sound, takes a –4 penalty on opposed Perception checks, and has a 20% chance of spell failure when casting spells with verbal components. Characters who remain deafened for a long time grow accustomed to these drawbacks and can overcome some of them.

Makes a difference in Garnult's story.

Yes, the dwarves could be aware of the Dark Elves in a number of ways. Particularly, anyone investing in Knowledge (Local). Knowledge (Local), for a number of reasons, is going to be treated as knowledge of Azathyr, the area of the underworld you will spend most of the campaign in, and its inhabitants (although specific racial information will default to the appropriate other knowledge skills.)

At this point, I'm going to narrow down the choices of descriptors to any that have received at least 2 votes, to help us get down to 3-5 finalists with votes from remaining applicants.

So from the original 20, we are down to ten descriptors to vote one:

Craftsmanship
Divine Right of Rulership
Dwarven Steel
Elemental Earth
Forgotten Lore
Fortune Favors the Bold
Honor
Mercy and Healing
Secrets Beneath the Mountain
Travel and Exploration

Of those, right now, Secrets Beneath the Mountain is the clear front-runner, with Divine Right of Rulership, Dwarven Steel, and Elemental Earth pretty much neck and neck behind it.

Thanks for everyones' sumbmissions and votes so far. Again, we will be closing up Patron votes on this Friday Nov 1st, so I can get the Patron sorted to help people finish their submissions/backgrounds.

Lots of great submissions so far. I'm sure it will be tough making the decision to get to 7 players.

Awesome, so conflict with the Dark Elves has happened prior to the AP. Also, are they called Drow in this AP or just Dark Elves?

Are we allowed alternate racial traits from the APG?

Patron votes would be: Secrets Beneath the Mountain and Elemental Earth
(though I do like Travel and Exploration too, I'm a rolling stone...)

Drow

Anyone remember the old 2nd Ed. Dwarven Battleragers....in the Salvatore novels there was a character named Thibbledorf Pwent..and he drank liquor and went on rampages. He was convinced that Drow elf blood was the best "lubricant" for his spiked armor.

Would be totally an awesome concept.

Favorite dwarfs were always the Bouldershoulder brothers. Pikel and Ivan.

No list today, will update tomorrow.

Question to the GM: do you mind if Donagh's warhammer gains the broken condition? Fits better with his background: it is the hammer he made for his brother that broke. I will subtract full price for it (otherwise it is dodgy with his mending ability).

Caesk Bristlebeard wrote:

great, now Im thinking of changing my fighter to a doodad.

Oo Oi!

Caesk Bristlebeard wrote:

or do you mean the "over-the-shoulder-boulder-holders?"

And another question:
Currently Donagh has three artisan tool sets: for blacksmithing, armorsmithing and weaponsmithing. Do I really need all 3 or is there overlap? I do not care costwise, but the weight is dragging him down...

And a small tweak: I have changed Anvil Hearths associated skill to weaponsmithing as that fits better with the background.

Okay I'm going to bite. The idea of playing a dwarven loremaster is too appealing. (and I hope I know how to use the dice roller!]

str: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 3) + 6 = 11
dex: 2d6 + 8 ⇒ (4, 6) + 8 = 18
con: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (3, 1) + 4 = 8
Int: 20
wis: 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 6) + 6 = 17
Cha: 8

Spoiler:
Male Dwarf (Scholar of the Ancient Ways), Wizard (Earth elemental school: Wood as opposed school)
Feats:
Additional Traits
Scribe Scroll

Traits:
Heir of Dammerhall (Campaign)
Student of Philosophy (Social)
Insular (Racial)
Darklands Delver (Regional)

I shall be looking for the Secrets Beneath the Mountain and Secret Lore so those two for patron would suit!. (Statblock and Back Story in the profile - alias of minoritarian)

Patron roll: 1d20 ⇒ 5

Wow lot's of applicants. I'm thinking I'll try my hand at a Dwarven Samurai. Wouldn't necessarily see him as being eastern just more of a honor bound warrior. In any case here go some rolls:

Focus Dex: 18
STR 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 4) + 6 = 15
CON 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (2, 5) + 6 = 13
Foible: INT 8
WIS 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (5, 1) + 6 = 12
CHA 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 2) + 6 = 9

With clever hands that leaves me at:
Dex 20
STR 15
CON 13
INT 8
WIS 14
CHA 7

Edit: I vote for Dwarven Steel!

as I keep reading and re-reading, I might change out my campaign trait.....I gave Bromen 'Old Money' to buy masterwork gear, but Im thinking that the 'Relic of the Dwarven Smithy' fits better with his background and still gets him the MW dorn.

Might tweak some of his gear selections, but still should have that done by the 11/8 deadline.

[shameless plug]If Donagh is one of the chosen you do not need to worry about MW gear, he is a smith ;) [/shameless plug]

Well im now looking forward to seeing the patron ;) Not only the choosen few ;)

Very curious about the patron and how I will fit him in in the background. Considering the top 2 descriptors he might be Donagh's diety, who knows?

Scarab Sages

Magabeus, thanks for the heads up only one Patron, Secrets Beneath the Mountain is my first choice anyway. I'm looking forward to finding out more about the patron. A patron who sponsors secrets isn't one normally associated with Good so should be interesting.

Oh, Reckless, sorry I made Elmador an Earth elemental school wizard without asking if Elemental schools were allowed first. If they're not then I'll change him to be a Conjurer.

Seeing as things are slowing down a bit is it possible to bump up the closing time? Feels silly to wait this long with so many viable candidates.

Also bumping to remind people thsi exists and to finish their characters arleady. :P

Sooooooooooo many. BTW, I'm applying Rasengard to the game, but he will probably suffer some minor changes once the patron is set.

secrets beneath the mountain, could also entail a patron who is adamant about hidden knowledge. Instead of actually keeping secrets, the patron could direct the believers to forgotten artifacts.

Scarab Sages

Elmador is obsessed with discovering who was responsible for the fall of Dammerhall so hopefully Secrets Beneath the Mountain is about unearthing (*groan*) secrets rather than/as well as keeping them.

Indeed, the secrets should be sacred to dwarves. The way I see it the dwarves "forgot" their own secrets with the fall of Dammerhall and the party should go and try to retrieve them. For Donagh that means rediscovering the sacred ways to work metal.

Here is a rough beginning draft of information on the Patron. Later today, after work, I will polish it up and add to, creating a Paizoesque Deity article, and post that both here and in the campaign info area.

Bryggya, The Steel Sister

Spoiler:

In the time before the world was fully formed, Drychos, The Molder, Dwarven God of Craft and Toil, felt a longing for companionship in his daily work. Having six brothers, none of whom particularly got along, Drychos decided he needed a sister. Travelling to the elemental plane of earth to find the purest iron in existence, he began forging a sister for himself.

From this iron, he created the finest dwarven steel ever crafted, and shaped it into Bryggya, the Steel Sister. Bryggya was the purest thing ever crafted by Drychos, and he breathed within her the fires of life, imparting her with some of his divine power. Drychos wished for an obedient sister, unlike his continually bickering brothers, and he forged her without a mouth, reasoning if she couldn’t talk she’d never disagree with him.

Once she was thus brought into being, Drychos grew fearful. What if his brothers saw this perfect being and demanded sisters of their own? That would never do; Bryggya was Drychos’ and Drychos’ alone. He brought her to one of his hidden forges, in the heart of a volcanic mountain chain. Sharing his sister with no one, he taught her all the secrets of his crafts, often depending on her when the Father’s demands were great.

For Bryggya, these times were filled with learning and wonder. She was created to accompany her brother’s works, and it was in this companionship she found satisfaction. Yet, as time wore on, Drychos spent less and less time in the mountain forge. Bryggya began to yearn for the company of others, to feel the mountain passages beneath her feet, and to learn. She began to explore the range, learning its secrets, shaping new pathways, and becoming known to the Dwarves living there.

Drychos’ absences became longer and more frequent, causing Bryggya to wander farther on these expeditions to find new things. During one of her explorations, she delved deeper than she ever had before, entering the underworld and happened upon the lair of Arrydagia, the Drow Goddess of Fleshcrafting. Bryggya was captured, chained with adamantine, and subjected to horrific experiments by the Drow Goddess. Yet, try as she might, Arrydagia could neither bend nor break Bryggya to her desires, for dwarven steel is stronger than any flesh, and Bryggya’s will was also steel. Indeed after time, Bryggya escaped her captivity, taking with her all the knowledge of Arrydagia’s ways.

Bryggya use this knowledge and what she had learned from her brother to craft wondrous dwarven steel limbs, enabling her to do more work and travel farther and faster than she ever had before. She used Arrydagia’s knowledge of spidersilk to fashion vast webs of iron beneath the mountains of the world, and taught the Dwarves the means to harvest the iron web and craft it into fine steel. It is said that Bryggya still roams under the mountains of the world, learning their secrets and passing this knowledge down to her followers.

Aphorisms

Spoiler:

“Share knowledge, keep secrets.” Just as Bryggya’s brother taught her his craft and she passed it down to the Dwarves, so should you teach those in your trust. However, she never shared their secrets with her jealous siblings nor any of the other races of the world, even when under the duress and torture.

“Show your steel.” When a dwarf’s heart and will are steel, she cannot be bent or broken.

“Don’t tell, do.” Doing something is better than talking about doing something.

“Bryggya shows.” Without a mouth, Bryggya’s communications are limited to actions, signs, visions, and portents. She doesn’t tell you what to do or how to do it, she shows you the way.

“ESLA(Explore, Seek, Learn, Adapt.)” Bryggya doesn’t just keep the secrets she knows, she looks for new ones and learns from them, then adapts them to what she already knows.

You call that rough? :-)

Nice work, Donagh definitely is a cleric of Bryggya. Will tweak the background a bit to show how she came into his life.

Hmmm, would Brygga have Paladins? Seems like she might be a LN diety similar to Abadar.....

Yup, Bryggya seems a fascinating patron/deity and that'll do just find for my Ulkra too. Any official domains for Bryggya? Sounds like artifice, earth, and knowledge might be among them.

Hey Ridge, nice to see you outside of the Falcons Hollow game.

I see Earth (Caves) subdomain and perhaps Law (Loyalty) since she stayed loyal and did not spill her secrets, perhaps even Strength (Resolve) since she stayed true to her secrets through torture.

Hi! I've been wanted an online campaign for ages, so when I stumbled on something where my recurring Dwarf character would fit in I knew right away I needed to put up a post and hope for an in. :)

Korvek Maidich, a dwarf big enough stand taller and broader than most of his kin. Left eye ruined and covered by an eye patch, face often covered with a grin, he's a dwarf guided by his firm morals who doesn't much care for going 'by the book'.

Racial Adjustments: Warrior of Legend: +2 Str, +2 Cha, -2 Wis

20 - Strength (18+2 Racial)
16 - Dexterity (16)
18 - Constitution (18)
8 - Intelligence (8)
8 - Wisdom (10-2 Racial)
16 - Charisma (14+2 Racial)

Focus: Strength
Foible: Intelligence

Patron Descriptors: Honor, Dwarven Steel

Korvek is a fighter. Though he enjoys a bar brawl as much as the next dwarf, he takes no pleasure in ending lives. With that said he knows better than to hesitate, a lesson hard-learned by the loss of his ruined eye.

Edit: I'd be tempted to call my rolls lucky, if Int and Wis weren't both in the toilet. XD

The part of 4.0 D&D that sold me was the battlerager. I had finally found the perfect class for my iconic recurring dwarf. :3 It's a shame that everything else in 4.0 kinda went to hell. :/

An interesting goddess. One definitely sees Travel and Knowledge as domains that work well with the idea of secrets.

Brygga seems to fit well with my character. Enna seems more of a doer than a talker.

I was planning to add this ref sheet I whipped up to my original post, but I can't seem to edit it anymore. :(

@Rombolt: you might want to check the campaign info page regarding rolling your ability scores for this campaign. (Synopsis: choose Focus and Foible, then roll 2d6+6 in order, no moving ability scores around. Apply modifiers after that). I do not know if the GM requires you to roll your ability scores in this thread, you might want to do that to be on the safe side.
You can easily roll ability scores in a post by using the following tags, [dice=xxxx}2d6+6[/dice} (replace the closing } with ] and put anything you want for the xxxx.

Question marks are in if no character sheet was available at the time of posting. Meaning that class can / could change.

I will most probably renew this list in a few days time, if there were changes. If I missed anything that has been posted, please feel free to PM me.
