Okay, I've got the map updated and tomorrow morning I'll finally post the start of the next encounter. Let's get this party started! I don't have anything else coming up that will get in the way of our regularly scheduled posting. Thanks again for your patience!

Hey guys, just a heads up: December is shaping up to be a real bear at my office as law firms get in their billing in advance the end of the fiscal year, so I've been pulling overtime and generally working harder than usual. As such I've been pretty burned out when I get home so I may miss a day or two of posting here and there up through New Years. Please bear with me and any slowness to respond to stuff.

Mike the GM |

'tis the season and all that... no worries! I think we've got enough interest to keep things going even if they slow down. If all you can do is crawl... then crawl! :)

Folks - I've been doing some thinking and I'd like to know what you think of me making some heavy adjustments to The Sunless Citadel in order to better fit our PBP game. As a traditional published mod there is a lot of combat, which maybe is less interesting for a PBP game than RP opportunities. I'd love to perhaps shorten the dungeon a bit by removing some of the combat encounters, allowing us to get on with the plot more quickly.
However, my original pitch for the game was that you'd be playing through The Sunless Citadel, so I don't want to take that away from anyone who was dead set on playing through the module.
Just trying to make sure we keep having as much fun as possible!
Thoughts? Opinions?

Valeria Baladin |

Well, a good fight is certainly fun, but PbP is defintely optimized for role-playing. (And a LOT of soliloquies.) And I'm really having a lot of fun RPing with this group!
If you want to reduce combat encounters, one trick I've done with published adventures is to replace a few of the less-interesting combats with CR-equivalent traps. They take a lot less time to resolve.
Or, make the monsters amenable to conversation: essentially converting "definitely combat" encounters to "possibly combat" encounters. That sometimes means switching out the published monster with somthing that can be bargained with.

Leynus Chet |

I don't mind either way, but I'd lean towards you making your changes, Mike. Combat takes a long time to resolve in PbP, and it's not always super interesting. And if you do decide to switch some encounters with an alternative situation, instead of just removing them, that sounds really cool too. Not that I'd know an edited spot, but still!
Also, I should apologize for being so ridiculously infrequent. I'm definitely in the midst of a "crawl" stage right now. Been very busy around here, school and stress and the new semester coming and auuugh.

When I started running Reign of Winter I knew that the encounter frequency could be an issue, however my players definitely enjoy the combat aspects, so what I did (with my party of 8) was condense encounters down. Remove uninteresting encounters designed to deplete resources and keep the interesting and necessary ones.
In their place I added haunts, more traps, and (eventually) a chase or two. These combat alternatives are great for spicing things up.
Additionally, to make up for any XP diminishing, I'd add an extra "boss" encounter. One APL +3 creature can add a lot of tension, just make sure the party had the resources necessary to fell it.

Hey folks-- My posting rate is going to be pretty low for the next two weeks because of Christmas, New Year's and holiday traveling.
I'm going to try to get a post in every other day or so, but I don't know whether I'll be able to actually do that.
Have a great holiday season everyone!

Mike the GM |

My next big post will be up as soon as I get a chance, by the 26th at the latest. Obviously a busy time for everyone. But things will move along somewhat more quickly than anticipated thanks to Bellicus's awesome attack..... :D

Hi All!
Just to give you guys a heads-up, I'm super busy because of the holidays and haven't been on the Internet outside of my phone in a few days. I'll be delayed in updating things till this weekend, most likely, though if I manage to steal a little time here and there I will!
I hope you all had an excellent week! :D

Mike the GM |

And to you!
Drat these holidays and all the free time they suck up.
Y'all should work on leveling your characters to level 2 - it's about that time!

Valeria Baladin |

All leveled up!
@Robert: While I would love to attend Paizocon (it's been over two decades since I've been to an RPG convention), signs are pointing to "no" this year.

Mike the GM |

You can go ahead and level up - the next encounter you can be level 2. Sorry not to have posted yet. We'll start the new year off with some fun stuff!
I won't be at Paizocon this year, sadly, even though I live in Seattle... bad timing!
Anyone entering RPG Superstar this year?

Valeria Baladin |

Anyone entering RPG Superstar this year?
I threw my hat in the ring. I submitted a magic item I designed for my campaign a few years ago, but never published anywhere. Wish me luck!

Valeria Baladin |

Hi, folks.
Paizo Fans Unlimited has put out the call for submissions for Wayfinder #11. The theme for this issue is Cheliax!
In the interest of full disclosure, I wanted to let you know that I am working on a version of Valeria that I plan to submit as an NPC for their "Weal or Woe" series.
Wish me luck!

Mike the GM |

Good luck in your submission! Maybe I'll throw my hat in as well.
Thanks for your patience everyone; the past couple weeks have been inordinately chaotic, despite being a "break" for me. What I'd like before we move on too much is a quick "hello" from everyone. Just check-in on this thread please and let me know your current posting availability. I know a few folks have been going through some busy times lately.
If you haven't already, please work on leveling your character up to level 2. Let me know if you have any questions about the process.

Valeria Baladin |

Things return to the normal state of chaos for me. I should be able to post daily for the foreseeable future. My next scheduled vacation won't be until April. (We're going to the UK!)

I'll give you some time to decide who gets what. Please discuss treasure in the OOC thread unless you have particular reason to mention something in-character. In the meantime please continue to use the in-character thread to develop characters, talk about next steps, and so on.
See updated treasure spreadsheet; use the link in your inbox. Everything from row 14 down is new. Again, the gold you get (whether actual gp found or gold from selling items) will be divided when you go back to town. Put your character's name in the "claim" column if you want something or the "recipient" column if it is decided that it is yours. The spreadsheet will then figure out how much gold everyone gets at the end in order to even things out. The "tracking" sheet shows how much "budget" you have left to "spend." Right now you are "behind" according to the wealth by level tables, but you'll catch up... if you survive!
Also see the updated dungeon map. I've added the goblin territory to the west, as you can see goblins fleeing through those rooms and get a gist of the general layout - as well as the room to the northeast that you know to be the location of the dragon based on the information from the goblin you interrogated. You won't know what's actually in the goblin rooms until you choose to explore them.
Don't forget to level up!

Mike the GM |

Yes, a quiver with 18 arrows.
I could post the link in the campaign info, but then anyone could access it. What do you all think?

Mike the GM |

Still plenty of treasure to be had if you want it!
Stuff you got from the goblins:
scroll of knock
antitoxin
antitoxin
onyx gems (2)
small dragon statues (2)
Silver rings with moonstones (3)
Chain shirt (medium, mwk)
Scale mail (medium, mwk)
Longsword (medium, mwk)
Shortbow (medium, mwk)
Everburning torch
Smokestick
Alchemist's fire
Alchemist's fire
Heavy mace (medium, mwk)
potion of cure moderate wounds
potion of lesser restoration

Mike the GM |

Please post in the gameplay thread and we can move on to the next exciting encounter! This one's got some nice rewards... and risks... ;)

Valeria Baladin |

Val is quite interested in the masterwork chain shirt and the masterwork mace. She wouldn't mind holding on to the potions.
Val's player is pretty sure that, since this module was written for D&D 3.0, the chances of recovering a masterwork starknife are slim.
Have we already talked about a loot assignment model? If so, I don't recall.
I've seen several models that get rather mechanical or complex. With players I trust, I prefer to take a more holistic approach. Of course, I'm not generally a player that gets caught up on who has the most toys, as long as everyone is is the same general ballpark.
I would pose that we simply split the monetary treasure evenly (once we get back to town), and assign recovered goodies to the specific PCs who could best use them. If any PC starts to fall behind in relation to others, we decide as a group to give that PC a monetary reward to compensate for slim item picking.
I would also pose that general healing items count as party treasure, as Val won't hesitate to use any healing item she possesses on her friends.
I've seen some groups split the treasure by "PCs in the party plus one," where the extra share is for the entire party's benefit. (e.g. accommodations at the inn, general party equipment (like a [i]wand of cure light wounds] or flasks of alchemist's fire), healing at the temple, etc.)
Thoughts?

Mike the GM |

The spreadsheet will automatically subtract the value of any items claimed by "Party" from what remains, reducing each PC's treasure allotment by the same amount. Basically everyone "splits" the cost of party items automatically.
The spreadsheet will also automatically determine how much GP everyone should get at the end of the adventure based on other treasure they claim.
Basically, take what you want, assign "shared" items to "Party" in the claims column, and when you get back to town I'll let you know how much GP everyone gets.
The second sheet will let us keep track of how much treasure everyone has so we can make sure nobody is falling behind.
:)

Valeria Baladin |

Okay... I just looked at the treasure list, and there are a fair number of goodies that don't seem to be claimed yet. We should decide on who's holding what before we start the next encounter.
Here's the non-monetary treasure that's listed as unclaimed:
potions of cure light wounds[/i0 (2). I would consider these party items, and people other than Val should carry them.
[i]potion of remove fear
potion of mage armor
oil of bless weapon (I think Bellicus should have that one)
potion of cat's grace
scroll of knock Teral is the obvious choice, but he stayed behind. Val has Use Magic Device at +8. The DC to use a CL 3rd scroll is 23, meaning she'd need to roll a 15 to successfully use it.
everburning torch
smokestick
two doses of antitoxin (I'd consider this party treasure, but Val is willing to hang onto them.)
two flasks of alchemist's fire. (Elion has a claim in for one)
two +1 arrows
Also, Valeria expressed interest in the MW heavy mace and MW chain shirt; and Bellicus has expressed interest in the MW longsword and MW scale mail. Unless anyone objects, I'd say these items go to those PCs.
Thoughts?
