The Tomb of Horrors Part 1 (4e) - Group 1

Game Master Rev Rosey

The monster that is Tomb of Horrors.
Two groups are going through this.
For some reason I set up a second game thread for Group 2, but not for Group 1.

I guess that's the difference between having a Warden and having a Battlemind.

Norrin?

So... Has Lisbarr actually seen the way out?

He has indeed. The plinth at the top contains the answer but it will have to be moved aside. That requires two Strength checks of DC28. Up to three aids, apart from the lead roll.

He interest peequed, Norrin says, "You're right, Anri! Who was it who said, 'If violence doesn't work, maybe it's time to give peece a chance!?'"

Free Action: Fast Hands to retrieve and drink from the keg of Dimber's.

Norrin retrieves and consumes the rest of the Dimber's in one swift motion that would make any seasoned alcoholic proud.

Minor Action: Sudden Bolt
1d20 + 22 ⇒ (18) + 22 = 40 vs Reflex.
2d6 + 11 + 3 + 3 ⇒ (4, 5) + 11 + 3 + 3 = 26 radiant damage.

Shift to Ii10.

Peercing Strike on the Gargoyle
1d20 + 22 ⇒ (1) + 22 = 23 vs Reflex.
1d8 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17 radiant damage.

Just before anointing the stony figure with his potent potty, Norrin—in the interest of good taste—self-consciously realises that, "I can't go with all these people watching."

I'm going to go with the old "just roleplaying my character" defence; in fact you can't spell RP without pee. :)

Rev DM wrote:
3. I'm going to ask you to jump forward in time to the finding of that plinth and go from there.

The quicker we jump forward in time, the quicker we can put that visual behind us, I think.

If Norrin would care to take his next turn, the Gargoyle will take his :)

Male Orcish-Nerathi Chelaxian Hybrid Ranger|Executioner Assassin

Norrin waves his hand in front of the gargoyle's face, before slipping past the living statue.

Move to Ii16. Acrobatics 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (16) + 14 = 30.

Minor Action to unleash the flying hook at F16.

Another Move Action: Climb to F16 via the rope using Athletics 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27.

In fairness to the garygoyle, I've removed the various end of next turn conditions from it for the passing of time.

Norrin unleashes the flying hook and nimbly joins Lisbarr by the plinth concealing the way out.

Behind him, the gargoyle's eyes open and it rises.

Standard to return to living form
Move to rise.

Moving more than 2 squares by any means other than flying requires a DC20 Acro or Athletics check as part of the move action. Failure sends you to random surface where you take 4d10 damage and land prone.
Moving from one surface to an adjacent square on another surface also requires a DC20 Acro/Ath check.
The map is a treated as a folded out box - arrows indicate adjacent surfaces.

To end Enc - at the end of each of Rothel's turns, one ally adjacent to Rahz-Ahk gains 11 temp HP.

As the creature rises once again, Rothel shakes his head, "Doesn't this thing realize the level of futility in its endeavors? Could someone with a stronger predilection toward being listened to, as many think that I ramble, convince this being that we will continue on, and all he is left with is the opportunity to lose his life. The defense of the abomination that is the evil within is not worth losing one's soul over, most appropriately for a being that has only one physical form during their miniscule existence that is." He tries to help, as he can, to get the gargoyle to just walk away as it's not a worthwhile combat.

You can try it if anyone speaks Primordial. You'll need some fairly convincing arguments though. Rothel's aid grants a +2.

Yes, she did.

Anri regains her composure quickly:

"Less Yakking, more Attacking!"

Strike the Avalanche: (Dex vs Fort) 1d20 + 20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 20 + 2 = 38

Primary target is slid a number of squares equal to Wisdom Modifier (5). If the gargoyle isn't standing on the ground, the first square will be sent moving it so that it is touching the ground, and then the rest will be moving it along that mess. (move target to Cc 14/Dd15...it's a large sized creature, you get what I mean it's going to be randomly teleported anyway, so this is mostly just a placeholder). This part doesn't really matter much, along with the bunch of things that would happen if Anri was tossing him into other targets. The important part is that he's moved more than 2 squares in a manner other than flight along the ground...so if this hit, well, the gargoyle randomly teleported somewhere else on the board. And now to bring out the many damage dice.

2d10 + 10 ⇒ (2, 10) + 10 = 22

And then the damage from the forced movement along the ground: 4d10 ⇒ (3, 8, 1, 1) = 13

If in the event the Gargoyle is randomly teleported within 5 squares of Anri, he'll take 7 Damage from Flurry of Blows, and will be the victim of a slide that will take him 1 square further away from Anri. I don't really care which square, just so long as it's further away to speed this along in the event that it's still nearby.

As her move action, Anri will activate Swift Flight, which will move her 13 squares via flying to U13.

As she flies, Anri calls out, "Hurry! We need to get to Norrin and Lisbarr on the Plinth!"

Anri Vitals:
HP: 90/100 + 11 Temp, AC: 34, Fort: 25, Ref: 30, Will 31

Anri slaps the gargoyle to the ground and unceremoniously kicks it away from her, sending it tumbling to another wall where it lands with an ear-splitting thump. Satisfied, she brushes gravel off her hands and heads towards Norrin and Lisbarr.

Nice work, Anri :D
It took an extra 18 damage from the fall in addition to your damage.

Lisbarr wishes he had paid more attention in his Primordial classes but realises that it is too late now for regrets. Instead, he tries to significantly hamper the gargoyle.

Vile plague vs G vs Fort.
1d20 + 18 ⇒ (17) + 18 = 35
On hit: The Gargoyle suffers from Vile Plague (save ends). While suffering it is slowed and dazed and takes 10 ongoing necrotic and poison damage. Additionally, while it is suffering from the plague, all creatures next to the gargoyle at the end of their turn take 5 necrotic damage.
On miss: Gargoyle takes 10 necrotic and poison damage, and it is slowed until the end of its next turn.

"Er... I wouldn't hang around to close to it if I were you..."

Akemi immediately puts that notion to the test.

Ethereal wings sprout from her as she leaps onto the wall, pressing the assault
Minor:Wings of Vengeance
Move: to Y7
Standard:
Bond of Pursuit
1d20 + 23 ⇒ (8) + 23 = 31
1d20 + 23 ⇒ (8) + 23 = 31

Heroic Effort to make that a 35, if needed...
1d12 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14

5 Necrotic damage taken.

Edit: Oh wait, that do be a crit!

20 dmg + 2d12 + 3d8 ⇒ (5, 1) + (7, 6, 3) = 22

Avenging Resolution ups that 1 to a 3 so...44 damage total.

Akemi shows her contempt of the monster's cowardly tactics.

As strange syllables leave Lisbarr's lips, the gargoyle erupts with putrescent boils. Staggering, its eyes cross and its movements slow. Akemi leaps in to take advantage, ignoring the invoker's warning, and suffers slightly in the process as one of the buboes explodes over her.

Not seeing a crit on your rolls Akemi. You needed the Heroic Effort to hit.

Wow - didn't know that :). What an excellent time to do it as well.

I suddenly cannot back this up for some odd reason. I remember reading it, maybe it got errata'd out! I'll keep looking

Its a prestige path ability on Ardent Champion, one of the previous PbPs I read had someone with that, so no crit sadly. :(

Let it ride. It's something that's going to happen so very rarely that I'm perfectly happy to accept it.

Before it's my turn, may I ask what my options are for interacting with the plinth?

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

Map-reading: I can teleport 4 sq to be adjacent to another creature. Can that get me to someone on side 6? I'm failing my topology check. I can use another move to get to another square adjacent to R-A first, if that would help.

from Lyan's position, side 6 is simply the wall to his right. You can get to F13, on the near side of Lisbarr

@Norrin - you can try to move the plinth, which requires a Strength check (up to four can work on it together, DC28) or I'm prepared to allow two each of Thievery or Dungeoneering to weaken the structure.

@Lyan - you can teleport next to Lisbarr if you wish.

Lyan is still up.

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

Lyan steps sideways and appears next to Lisbarr, waiting for the next stage.

That would be Lodestone Lure. All my decent damage dealing went by the wayside two encounters back.

I meant what action of the gargoyle's?

Male Orcish-Nerathi Chelaxian Hybrid Ranger|Executioner Assassin

Well the weekend has started early for me, thanks to my new schedule, so that means it's D&D Next playtest tomorrow! :D

Looking around the room, the rogue concludes that it's a buyer's market for this particular style of plinth, and decides to engineer some scarcity.

Dungeoneering 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (19) + 18 = 37

I'm taking it that the trigger will be the gargoyle getting in range.

M Hobgoblin Battlemind/Quicksilver Demon 17 (Foe Killer)

Norrin

Male Orcish-Nerathi Chelaxian Hybrid Ranger|Executioner Assassin

Wait, can I make an attack in addition to the Dungeoneering check to weaken the plinth?

No, you can't. Your post didn't propagate properly so I missed it. Then computer fried slightly and wouldn't let me online. Back now. Hope D&D Playtest went well - what did you think of it?

Norrin gets to work on the plinth, forcing the mechanism backwards in an attempt to get away while the gargoyle is still daxed. The creature sneezes pathetically as the plague takes hold and scrambles to its feet, but can do no more.

Calling on whatever inner resources a lump of rock has, it manages to shake off the effects of the pustules. The buboes turn to stone, leaving the gargoyle with an unpleasant lumpy appearance, but otherwise unharmed.

Anri moves 4 squares (Five Storms movement technique + 2 normal squares from Mystery of the East Wind) all of which is via flight thanks to Mysteries Revealed from Four Winds Master. so no rolls required... taking her to her current square, which leaves her in range to attack The Gargoyle. She activates her at-will power:

Steel Wind (Close Blast 2 - Enemies Only) (Dex vs. Ref): 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (12) + 20 = 32
Damage: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (2) + 10 = 12

If that hits, add +7 damage from Centered Flurry of Blows. Let me know if it hit, and I'll shift the Gargoyle 2 squares to where Anri wants it.

Anri Vitals:
HP: 90/100 +10 Temp, AC: 34 (37 vs. Gargoyle if attack hit, and Anri was able to thus slide him where she wants via Flurry of Blows), Fort: 25, Ref: 30 (31 vs. Gargoyle if attack hit, thanks to Fluid Ki Focus), Will: 31

It hits

The gargoyle reels under Anri's attack.

Female Human Monk/Master of the Four Winds 17

Anri grins as she lets loose with a hurricane barrage of kicks into the Gargoyle. She leaps back to her position next to Akemi and shouts:

"Get over here!"

And then she throws her dagger, which somehow seems to hook around like a boomerang, striking the Gargoyle at just the right angle to bring it closer to her and Akemi.

"You irk me with your weak moves and unsophisticated turtle style of defense!"

So, he was out of range for her cleats to take effect, but Starblade Flurry is still good, so he gets moved 1 square closer to Akemi and Anri.

With the practice she's getting, Anri can find work demolishing buildings any time she likes.

According to my 3D visualisation of the cosmic all, I think that everywhere is within 5 squares of Lisbarr except surfaces 2 and 4, the rightmost column of surfaces 1,5 and 6, the two rightmost columns of surface 3 and the top two rows of surface 1. Which is my way of saying that Lisbarr can shoot the gargoyle with his Astral Seal once more.
